Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch Restaurant in Belmont Are Closing

Over the summer, it was reported that the flagship location of a group of specialty beer shops and its sibling beer hall were both going up for sale, with the hope being that they could remain in operation under new ownership. Now we have learned that this won't be happening after all, and both businesses will apparently be going away.

A Facebook post confirms what a source told us, that Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch Restaurant in Belmont are shutting down, with the post saying the following:

We are announcing today, that our time in Belmont Center, as your go-to bottle shop (and of late, Beer Hall For All), will be coming to an end. We anticipate our last day of operation to be Sunday, December 31, 2023....There are factors...some of which include the long lasting negative impacts of the global pandemic, which has had a ripple effect in the beer industry, retail, and restaurants, alike, on-going staffing challenges (and gosh, have they been many), and irreconcilable differences with our landlord, which has ultimately dissolved any parties interest in purchasing our businesses, as we had hoped. Time has run its course and now it's time for us to live our last chapter. 

Back in August, it looked like the initial plan was for Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch to be sold separately, and the beer shop would appear to remain part of the franchise operation while Trinktisch might possibly remain in operation under that brand. (The Belmont location of Craft Beer Cellar moved from its original location up the street to its current space in 2020, while Trinktisch opened the following year.)

Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch Restaurant in Belmont Are Up for Sale

The flagship location of a group of specialty beer shops and its sibling beer hall are both being put on the market.

According to a source (Mark Gurwell), Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch Restaurant on Leonard Street in Belmont Center are for sale, with a note on the website of Craft Beer Cellar saying the following:

We have had the time of our lives being your local beer & wine store, and now your beer hall & gathering place. But, we feel that the time has come for us to get back to ourselves, each other, and to look towards building on our experiences to further explore excellence in hospitality, in the retail and restaurant segment (Craft Beer Cellar Co), and beer industry education, in a new light....After 13 years of selling and supporting amazing beer, making treasured friends, and proudly watching some of our employees go on to become change-makers in this industry, it feels like the right time.

The note mentions that Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch will likely be sold separately, and it sounds like the beer shop would apparently remain part of the franchise operation; it also appears that the plan may be for Trinktisch to remain in operation under that brand, as the beer hall's website says that "We look forward to assisting the new owner(s) in obtaining all the information they need to run Trinktisch, not just successfully, but better, in it’s new chapter."

The Belmont location of Craft Beer Cellar moved from its original location just up the street to its current space in 2020, while Trinktisch debuted the following year.

Craft Beer Cellar in Newtonville Is Closing

A group of specialty beer stores will be shutting down one of its locations.

According to a tweet from @BostonHanSolo, Craft Beer Cellar in Newtonville is closing its doors, with a note out front at the Austin Street shop indicating that it will shutter on December 31. This location of the beer store had originally been on Centre Street in Newton Centre before moving to its current Newtonville space.

Other locations of Craft Beer Cellar in Eastern Massachusetts can be found in Belmont, Plymouth, and Westford, with 10 others being scattered around the country.

Craft Beer Cellar Team Is Opening Trinktisch Restaurant and Bar in Belmont; Retail Shop Moving Into Space As Well

Earlier this year, it was reported that the original location of a group of specialty beer shops is moving to a larger space up the street. Now we have learned that the people behind the business will also be opening a restaurant and bar within the new space as well.

According to an article from Wicked Local, Trinktisch is opening in the former Foodies's market space on Leonard Street in Belmont Center, while Craft Beer Cellar--whose team is behind the new dining and drinking spot--is opening there as well. The post mentions that Trinktisch will take up 12,240 feet of space while Craft Beer Cellar will have 4,000 square feet of space (which is well more than double the size of its current shop on Leonard Street) and that the restaurant and bar will have a full liquor license. Detailed information on Trinktisch--which means "drinking table"--has not yet been given, so stay tuned for updates, including what might be on its menu and when it may open. [Ed note--the beer shop is now open in the space.]

Craft Beer Cellar in Braintree Is Now Kay's Cans & Bottles

A location of a group of specialty beer stores has changed its name, though its ownership has remained the same.

According to its Facebook page, Craft Beer Cellar in the Weymouth Landing part of East Braintree has become Kay's Cans & Bottles, with Kay Young still behind the Commercial Street shop. Based on its Facebook posts as well as Young's posts, the store sells beer, wine, and spirits, and there appears to be a focus on craft beers from local and regional breweries while the place also sells brews from elsewhere in the country and beyond.

A number of Craft Beer Cellars have either shut down or morphed into stores with new names over the past year or so; the company started out in Belmont in 2010.

Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont Center Is Moving to Bigger Location

The very first location of a group of specialty beer shops is moving to a larger space nearby.

According to an article in the Belmont Citizen-Herald/Wicked Local, Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont Center is moving from its current home at 51 Leonard Street to a new space at 75 Leonard Street this spring, taking over a third of the old Foodie's market space. Founder Suzanne Schalow says that the new location will include expanded space for both beer and wine, while food items such as cured meats, cheese, and other snacks will be offered as well.

Craft Beer Cellar debuted in Belmont in the fall of 2010 and has since expanded both regionally and nationwide via franchised stores.

Craft Beer Cellar in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood Is Becoming Fenway Beer Shop

It looks like a local group of specialty beer shops is shrinking once again, with its sole remaining Boston location possibly getting a name change.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Craft Beer Cellar in the Fenway is petitioning to change its name to Fenway Beer Shop, with the hearing on the matter being scheduled for Wednesday, August 14. If approved, this would mean that there would be no more Craft Beer Cellar shops within the Boston city limits, as its Fort Point and Roslindale outlets shut down a few months ago. Other locations of Craft Beer Cellar have closed and/or changed over to new places over recent times as well, including locations in Framingham, Sudbury, Swampscott and Winchester.

The first Craft Beer Cellar shop opened in Belmont back in 2010.

Craft Beer Cellar in Swampscott and Winchester to Close April 30

A local group of specialty beer shops continues to shrink, with two more locations in the Greater Boston area getting ready to shut down.

According to a Facebook post and a tweet, the locations of Craft Beer Cellar in Swampscott and Winchester are closing tomorrow (Tuesday, April 30), with this news coming on the heels of the Roslindale store closing earlier this month and the Fort Point outlet saying farewell this week.
A blog post from the business also mentions that at least eight other locations have recently closed--including one in Framingham--and three others (including Sudbury) are no longer Craft Beer Cellars.

The first Craft Beer Cellar shop opened in Belmont back in 2010.

It looks like another location of a local group of specialty beer stores is closing

According to a Twitter post from the place, Craft Beer Cellar in the Fort Point section of Boston is shutting down at the end of the month, with the tweet saying that "It's been fun and you've been great! PJ and I will miss you all! But for now, stop by, say goodbye and take advantage of our 25% off sale....Cheers!!" The pending closure of the Farnsworth Street shop comes on the heels of the closing of the CBC store within the historic substation in Roslindale, with that shop shutting down for good once its remaining supplies run out. [Ed note: Now closed.]

Craft Beer Cellar first started out in Belmont in 2010 and now has a number of stores in the local area and elsewhere in the country.

Craft Beer Cellar in Roslindale Is Closing

A growing group of specialty beer stores will soon see one of its shops close--and this one is located in an historic space that once looked like it could include a restaurant as well.

Universal Hub is reporting that Craft Beer Cellar in Roslindale is shutting down, with the store--which is located in the basement of a former substation--selling its products at 25% off starting tomorrow. No closing date has been given as of yet, but it sounds like it will likely shutter relatively soon. Craft Beer Cellar first opened in Roslindale in early 2017, and at the time, it looked like local restaurateur Chris Douglass (Ashmont Grill, Tavolo) might open a dining spot called Third Rail in the century-old structure as well, but those plans never came to be and the space has only been home to some temporary spots other than the beer shop, including winter beer halls over the past couple of years.

Craft Beer Cellar first started out in Belmont in 2010 and now has a number of stores in the local area and beyond.

Craft Beer Cellar Opens in Renovated Substation in Roslindale January 14

Last year, we reported that a growing group of specialty beer stores was planning on opening in an historic location in Boston. Now we have learned that the shop is just about ready to open.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Craft Beer Cellar is opening in the renovated substation in Roslindale Village on January 14, with a ribbon cutting and tastings taking place that day, along with live entertainment from Keytar Bear. The new shop joins a number of others in the Greater Boston area, including the original store in Belmont Center.

The Roslindale substation, which is more than a century old, will also be home to Third Rail, a new dining spot from local restaurateur Chris Douglass (Ashmont Grill, Tavolo).

UPDATE: Craft Beer Cellar in Weymouth Landing Reopens After SUV Crashes Into Shop

[Ed note: This article was updated on December 8 to reflect the fact that the shop is open once again.]

A location of a group of specialty beer stores has reopened after a scary accident forced it to close.

According to a Facebook post from the shop, an SUV reportedly went out of control on Friday, December 2 and smashed into Craft Beer Cellar in Weymouth Landing, causing extensive damage to the front windows and window frames and destroying some of its beer. A new post states that the store reopened on Thursday, December 9 after necessary repairs were made to the storefront.

No one was injured in the accident, which WCVB indicates may have been the result of a stuck accelerator, causing the Ford Explorer to go through at least three intersections before hitting the store. (WCVB says the crash is under investigation.)

Craft Beer Cellar is Opening in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood

A local group of specialty beer stores continues to make expansion plans, this time opening in a space in one of the hottest sections of Boston.

According to a Twitter post from Boston Herald writer @DGoodison, Craft Beer Cellar is planning to open a new shop in the Fort Point section of the city (near where it meets the Seaport District on Farnsworth Street). This announcement comes on the heels of another store possibly coming to Sudbury, along with new shops planned for Boston's Fenway neighborhood and Roslindale.

Other locations of Craft Beer Cellar can currently be found in Amesbury, Belmont, Braintree, Newton, Plymouth, Westford, and Winchester, with other shops open--or in the works--in 12 other states plus Washington, DC.

Craft Beer Cellar Plans to Open in Sudbury

A local group of specialty beer stores is getting ready to expand once again, with a new one possibly coming to a western suburb of Boston.

According to an article in the Sudbury Patch, Craft Beer Cellar is looking to open at the Mill Village Shopping Plaza on Route 20. Assuming that the town of Sudbury approved of the plans this week, the new shop will be joining others in Amesbury, Belmont, Braintree, Newton, Plymouth, Westford, and Winchester, with other locations being planned for Boston's Fenway neighborhood and Roslindale. (Other stores are also open--or in the works--in 12 other states plus Washington, DC.)

Craft Beer Cellar Is Opening in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood

A local group of specialty beer stores is expanding once again, and this time it will be opening a shop in one of Boston's busiest areas.

According to their social media pages, Craft Beer Cellar is planning to open in the city's Fenway neighborhood, with the store being located on Van Ness Street near where it meets Kilmarnock Street (just east of Brookline Street and across from the outdoor seating area for the Yard House). Based on a blueprint posted onto Facebook, it looks like the shop will have approximately 1,600 square feet of space, with construction being "well underway" as of a few weeks ago. If all goes as planned, the new Craft Beer Cellar is hoping to be open around Labor Day.

[March 29, 2016 update: According to a Facebook event page, the new Craft Beer Cellar in the Fenway is having its grand opening on Saturday. April 2. (Thanks to @alexeweaver for bringing this to our attention.]

[April 1, 2016 update: A Facebook post from the shop indicates that the new Craft Beer Cellar in the Fenway has actually soft-opened ahead of tomorrow's grand opening.]

Craft Beer Cellar Plans to Open in Former Substation in Roslindale

An expanding local group of specialty beer stores is looking to open a new location, and this one would be in an historic structure within a Boston neighborhood.

Universal Hub is reporting (via Roslindale Village Main Street) that Bryan Reeves and Marty Alvares-Reeves are hoping to open a franchise of Craft Beer Cellar in a former substation in Roslindale Village that is being redeveloped into a mixed-used complex. If the proposal is approved and plans go as scheduled, the new location of the beer shop could be opening next winter (a beer and wine license needs to be approved by the city before the green light is given, according to UH).

Boston-area locations of Craft Beer Cellar can currently be found in Belmont, Braintree, Newton, and Winchester; a number of other outlets are also in operation elsewhere in New England, along with shops in New York, Florida, and Missouri. (The CBC website is at http://www.craftbeercellar.com/)
