Cisco Brewers Has Closed Its Pub in Portsmouth, NH; Facility Will Continue to Produce Beer

A local brewery has shut down one of its pubs, though its beermaking operation within that space won't be affected.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Cisco Brewers has closed the bar at its facility in Portsmouth, NH, with the post saying the following:

We have loved being a part of this wonderful community and want to thank our many patrons over the years, and especially our amazing team, for being so welcoming and for the incredible experience in Portsmouth.

The post goes on to say that Cisco will continue to brew its beers at the Corporate Drive space, and no changes are expected at its locations in Nantucket, Boston's Seaport District, and New Bedford. (The Portsmouth location first opened in 2018, replacing Redhook Brewery.)

The address for the Portsmouth location of Cisco Brewers is 35 Corporate Drive, Portsmouth, NH, 03801. Its website can be found at https://www.ciscobrewers.com/

Remnant Brewing Is Opening in the Former Atwood's Tavern Space in Cambridge's Inman Square

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a beloved Cambridge restaurant, bar, and live music venue was shutting down, and now we have learned that a nearby brewery will be taking over its space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Remnant Brewing at Bow Market in Somerville's Union Square is expanding to the former Atwood's Tavern space on Cambridge Street in Inman Square, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

Okay, remember when we told y'all we were expanding?? We're delighted to share that our upcoming second location will be nestled at 877 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA! This remarkable space is formerly home to Atwood's Tavern! We are stoked to be given the opportunity to continue the legacy of Atwood's by creating a warm, community-centric, and welcoming place for everyone. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this exciting new chapter!

It is not yet known whether the new location of Remnant will feature live music, nor is it known what kind of food it might offer, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

Atwood's closed at the end of March after being in business for 16 years; Remnant first opened at Bow Market in 2018.

The address for the new location of Remnant Brewing in Inman Square is 877 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, 02141. The website for the business can be found at https://www.remnantsomerville.com/

[May 19 update: An article from Cambridge Day indicates that Remnant Brewing's new spot in the former Atwood's Tavern space will indeed feature live music, with co-founder David Kushner saying that "Atwood's was always a Remnant favorite because of the beautiful space, amazing staff and the live music. In addition to expanding the types of entertainment, we plan on booking a lot of the same bands that guests came to love and expect at Atwood's."]

[August 25 update: A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page mentions that Remnant is now in the process of soft opening in the old Atwood's space, with a Facebook post from Remnant stating that its official opening is slated to take place on September 1.]

Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. to Expand to New Location in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood

A brewery in the western suburbs is going to be expanding into Boston.

Eater Boston is reporting (via the Boston Business Journal) that Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. in Waltham is planning to open a 13,000-square-foot facility at Bower, a residential development on Beacon Street between Kenmore Square and Audubon Circle that will be part of the new Fenway Center complex. The new space will be used for the production of new beers in smaller batches while also having a kitchen that will be run by an outside food partner.

Bower is planning to debut in October, and the new Mighty Squirrel plans to open later this year as well.

The website for Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. is at https://www.mightysquirrel.com/

Burke's Alewerks Opens in West Newton

Last year, it was reported that a South Shore brewery and taproom was planning to expand to a space west of Boston, and now we have learned that it has opened, though it is actually a move rather than an expansion.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Burke's Alewerks is now open in West Newton, with a Facebook post from the business indicating that it debuted last weekend--and posters have told us that the Hanover location has closed so this is indeed a move contrary to what we had heard in the late winter of 2022. The new spot takes over a location of The Local, which continues to operate locations in Waltham, Wayland, and Wellesley.

Expect to find a mix of European and American-style ales at the new Burke's Alewerks in West Newton along with several wine options, while food offerings for now include pretzels and pizza.

The address for the new location of Burke's Alewerks in West Newton is 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. The website for the business is at https://burkesalewerks.com/

Lamplighter CX Is Opening at Cambridge Crossing in East Cambridge

Back in 2019, it was reported that the people behind a Cambridge brewery were looking to open a brewery, taproom, and distillery in another part of the city. Now we have learned that while they are still looking to open a second location, the plans have changed just a bit.

According to an article from Eater Boston and a post from Cambridge Day, Lamplighter Brewing on Broadway is going to be joined by Lamplighter CX (rather than Luminati Spirits, which was going to be its original name), which will reside in Cambridge Crossing in East Cambridge and will include a taproom and production space. Both articles say that plans for the distillery have been scrapped--at least for now--while the original location (which is roughly between Central Square, Inman Square, and Kendall Square) will remain in operation and currently includes outdoor dining/drinking and a cafe and retail area.

The website for Lamplighter, which debuted on Broadway in the latter part of 2016, can be found at https://lamplighterbrewing.com/

[February 18, 2022 update: According to a press release, Lamplighter CX will have its grand opening weekend from Friday, February 25 through Sunday, February 27, with its official opening taking place on Monday, February 28.]
