Hilliards Chocolates to Expand, Opening a New Shop in West Newton

A local group of candy shops that dates back more than 100 years and currently has three stores south of Boston is planning to open a new location west of the city.

Once the new outlet opens, it will join others in North Easton, Norwell, and Mansfield, and based on those stores, expect to see a variety of chocolate items along with other types of candies.

Hilliards got its start back in 1924 in the southern suburbs of Boston, with Perley and Jessie Hilliard establishing the business.

The address for the upcoming location of Hilliards Chocolates is 1 Chestnut Street, West Newton, MA, 02465. The website for the company is at https://www.hilliardscandy.com/

Madeleine's Candy Shop Is Opening in Boston's South End

A brand new candy shop is getting ready to open in Boston.

According to its website, Madeleine's Candy Shop is slated to open in the South End on Saturday, February 1, moving into a space on Clarendon Street near the Appleton Street intersection. A note on its site says the following about how the idea for the store came to be:

Simply put, Madeleine's Candy Shop was concocted out of sugar cravings. After working her day job in clinical research, Founder & Candy Enthusiast—Madeleine Brason—often struggled to satisfy her late night sweet tooth, (sometimes settling for a sad handful of chocolate chips…). And so, powered by caffeine and "girl math," she threw caution to the wind and ditched her Health Science degrees for a life of candies & chocolates. A quarter-life-crisis never tasted so sweet.

Madeleine's will be offering domestic and global treats in bulk and pre-packaged, and it will also sell gluten-friendly and low-glycemic options.

The address for Madeleine's Candy Shop is 47 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA, 02116. Its website can be found at https://www.madeleinescandyshop.com/

Evelyn and Angel's Candy Shop in Cambridge Is Moving to Arlington

It looks like a candy shop and soda fountain that opened in Cambridge a couple of years ago is moving out of the city.

According to a couple of sources (including a Twitter post sent yesterday), Evelyn & Angel's Candy Shop on Mass. Ave. is moving to an undisclosed location in Arlington, with the other source (Rich O's Ravings) saying that the shop had been shortening its hours of late and became either mostly or completely closed over the past couple of weeks. It appears that the shop will reopen in Arlington sometime in 2016.

Evelyn & Angel's Candy Shop first opened its doors between Porter Square and Harvard Square around the beginning of 2013, featuring freshly-made chocolates as well as roasted nuts and candy.

The current address for Evelyn & Angel's Candy Shop is 1702 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02138; as soon as we find out exactly where it will be moving to in Arlington, we will post an update here.

Spindler Confections to Open in North Cambridge

A new candy shop is on its way to a part of Cambridge that seems to be becoming a "small confectioners' district."

Cambridge Day is reporting that Spindler Confections is planning to open on Mass. Ave. in North Cambridge next to Nussli 118° (a snack shop focusing on healthy treats) and a short distance away from Pemberton Farms (an upscale market that offers locally-made chocolates, candies, cakes, and desserts). The article mentions that the new store will feature small-batch sweets such as brittles, caramels, and chocolates--and it may eventually may sell cookies and other baked goods during the holiday season as well--with founder Jeremy Spindler saying that "Everything is done by hand, very small batches. No large machinery whatsoever." If all goes as planned, Spindler Confections may possibly open in early November.

[December 4 update: According to a Chowhound poster, Spindler Confections is planning to open sometime in the middle of this month.]

[December 14 update: The Tables section of The Boston Globe states that Spindler Confections is now open.]

As Cambridge Day notes, the city used to be a major player in candy manufacturing, with such big names as Necco, Squirrel Brand, and Tootsie Roll Industries being located there (the latter continues to make Junior Mints from its home on Main Street).

The address for this upcoming candy shop in North Cambridge is: Spindler Confections, 2257 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02140. Its website can be found at http://spindlerconfections.com/

Candy Castle in Lexington Is Closing

A candy shop in the northwest suburbs of Boston is calling it a day after more than three decades in business.

According to an article in the Lexington Minuteman, Candy Castle on Mass. Ave. in the center of town is closing today, citing a proposed rent increase of 40 percent from the new owners of the building that makes the business "unsustainable." The article says that owner Paul Clancy and his wife will sell everything today at a discount until it is all gone. Candy Castle first opened its doors 34 years ago, offering everything from jelly beans to fudge to old-fashioned candies and much more.

The address for Candy Castle is 1853 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA, 02420.

A Cape Cod candy shop that got its start nearly 90 years ago has quietly opened in one of the busiest parts of Cambridge.

A message sent from the place indicates that Cabot's Candy in Provincetown is now open on Mass. Ave. in Harvard Square, with the shop initially opening its doors sometime last week. Based on its original store on Commercial Street in the heart of Ptown, expect to see a variety of salt water taffy at the new shop, along with fudge, peanut brittle, popcorn, and more.

According to its Facebook page, the original Cabot's candy shop in Provincetown has been around since 1927, making it one of the oldest stores in town. It is located across from Town Hall and about a block south of the Pilgrim Monument.

The address for the new location of Cabot's Candy in Harvard Square is 1300 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02138. The Facebook page for the new shop is at https://www.facebook.com/cabotscandycambridge while the website for the original store is at http://www.cabotscandy.com/

[August 14 update: A message from Cabot's indicates that their candy is actually being sold out of a jewelry shop and a clothing store in Cambridge; the post says that the owners of Zinnia Jewelry and Tula Boutique (both of which are in the same building and share an entrance) have decided to sell Cabot's candy instead so the clothes and jewelry have apparently been put aside and the candy is now in place. Cabot's also says that their grand opening party will take place tomorrow (Saturday, August 15).]
