American Flatbread in Salem Has Closed

A location of a group of restaurants that focus on flatbread pizza has shut down.

According to multiple sources (including a few within the restaurant industry), American Flatbread in Salem is no longer in business, with a call placed to the Derby Street spot indicating that the voicemail box was full. It is not known if this is the only location to close (the website for the company continues to show the Salem outlet); as soon as we find out more--including why the restaurant shut down--we will post an update here.

In the fall of 2021, American Flatbread replaced Flatbread Company in Salem, with the same changeover taking place with other Flatbread Company locations in Brighton, Somerville, and Georgetown. A local outlet of Flatbread Company remains open in Amesbury.

The address for the now-closed American Flatbread in Salem was 311 Derby Street, Salem, MA, 01970. The website for all locations is at https://americanflatbread.com/

Flatbread Company in Bedford Has Closed

The sole remaining Boston-area location of a group of flatbread pizza spots has shut down.

According to an article in the Bedford Citizen, Flatbread Company in Bedford has closed its doors after being in business for 18 years, with founder Jay Gould saying that "We are saddened that due to the financial impact of the pandemic combined with a slow recovery has brought us to make this difficult decision," while President/COO Jason M. Lyon states that "Our Monday through Friday lunch business which accounted for more than 50% of our weekly sales is no longer there. We've waited for two and half years for it to bounce back; unfortunately, we can't hold out any longer to see what the future holds."

With the closing of the Bedford location and the switching of outlets in Brighton, Somerville, and Salem to American Flatbread, there are no more Flatbread Company restaurants in the Greater Boston area, with the closest one now being in Amesbury.

The address for the now-closed Flatbread Company in Bedford was 213 Burlington Road, Bedford, MA, 01730. The website for the Amesbury location (as well as outlets in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Hawaii) can be found at https://flatbreadcompany.com/

Locations of Flatbread Company in Brighton, Somerville, Salem, and Georgetown Are Now American Flatbread Outlets

A change has come to several Eastern Massachusetts restaurant locations, and two companies that focus on flatbread pizza--and who have had a connection to each other over the years--are in the middle of the change.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Flatbread Company outlets in Brighton, Somerville, Salem, and Georgetown are now part of American Flatbread, with a page within the American Flatbread website (which seemed to be having a privacy issue over the weekend) saying that "American Flatbread is on its own again! Waitsfield, Middlebury, and Burlington VT are joined by new American Flatbreads in Brighton, Somerville, Salem, and Georgetown MA...." It does appear, however, that locations of Flatbread Company in Amesbury and Bedford will remain as is.

American Flatbread started out in Waitsfield in 1985, with Flatbread Company being established in Amesbury in 1998; the two companies originally had a direct connection to each other, but eventually went their own ways, though a Patch article from 2013 mentioned that Flatbread Company purchased the American Flatbread brand and franchise operations that year. The post also indicated back then that plans to expand the American Flatbread brand were being discussed at the time, so this changeover may have been in the works for awhile.

Pizzamore Flatbread Company in Woburn Has Apparently Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

It appears that a suburban spot featuring flatbread pizza has shut its doors, and it is not known what might become of the space.

According to a message from The Daily Lunch, Pizzamore Flatbread Company in Woburn is closed, and has been for awhile now (apparently since before Christmas), and that there is no indication as to why it has shuttered or what may be happening with the space. Its closure confirms what we had heard from other sources, though several checks on the website for the Main Street eatery over the past few weeks show that it is still up while phone calls go unanswered.

Pizzamore, which first opened in the fall of 2015, offered flatbreads along with soups, salads, calzones, and sandwiches.

The address for Pizzamore Flatbread Company was 901 Main Street, Woburn, MA, 01801.

Cosi in Boston's Back Bay Has Closed

A local chain of dining spots known in part for its flatbreads and sandwiches has closed one of its shops in Boston.

According to a Twitter post from @BostonHurricane, Cosi on Boylston Street in the Back Bay is no longer in operation, with a sign out front saying "Our restaurant is closed. We truly appreciate your patronage and we apologize for any inconovenience." It appears that the chain's other locations on Federal Street, High Street, Milk Street, and State Street in downtown Boston--along with South Station, the Seaport District, Logan Airport (2), and Cambridge's Kendall Square--remain open, though we are still trying to confirm.

Last December, we reported that the Cosi chain received a warning from the Nasdaq Stock Market that it faced a delisting because its common stock closed below $1.00 for 30 consecutive business days, though Globenewswire mentioned this past May that it now has until November to reach the $1.00 threshold for a minimum of ten consecutive business days during this grace period. (Cosi's stock closed at $0.17 today.)

Cosi, which started out in the mid-1990s and is currently headquartered in Boston's Downtown Crossing, has approximately 100 locations across the country.

The address for this now-closed eatery in the Back Bay was: Cosi, 399 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for the chain is at https://getcosi.com/

Pizzamore Flatbread Company to Open in Woburn

It looks like a new restaurant that features flatbread pizza is coming to a northern suburb of Boston that is suddenly red-hot for dining.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Pizzamore Flatbread Company is planning to open on Main Street in Woburn, with the posting saying that the eatery will be a "fast casual concept" that includes "healthy flatbreads, artisan sandwiches and a variety of salads all to be cooked and served in a completely renovated restaurant with state of the art equipment and the freshest ingredients."

The address given for Pizzamore is the same as that of both Lanna Thai Diner and the now-closed Between Us Pizza; it is assumed that the new dining spot will be moving into the latter, though this has not been confirmed as of yet. (As soon as we get more information, we will post an update here.)

The address given for Pizzamore is 901 Main Street, Woburn, MA, 01801.

[November 16 update: According to a Facebook post from the place, Pizzamore Flatbread Company is now open.]

Rail Trail Flatbread Co. Is Opening in Hudson

It looks like a restaurant that features flatbread pizza is coming to the MetroWest area.

According to The MetroWest Daily News Rail Trail Flatbread Co. has received a license to operate on Main Street in Hudson, moving into a space in the heart of the downtown area that has been vacant. The article mentions that the new spot will cook flatbread pizzas in a wood-fired oven, and that all-natural, organic ingredients will be used for the pies.

The name of the restaurant comes from The Assabet River Rail Trail, a biking, jogging, and walking trail that cuts through Hudson and, when done, will go through the communities of Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, Maynard, and Acton.

Currently, there is no specific opening date for Rail Trail Flatbread Co., according to The MetroWest Daily News.

[December 14, 2012 update: According to a poster on the hiddenboston Twitter page, Rail Trail Flatbread Co. is now open.]

The address for this new pizza restaurant in Hudson is: Rail Trail Flatbread Co., 33 Main Street, Hudson, MA, 01749.
