Dani's Queer Bar Opens in Boston's Back Bay

Early last year, it was reported that a new bar that caters to the LGBTQ community would be coming to Boston, and now we have learned that it is open.

According to its website and Instagram page, Dani's Queer Bar opens later today in the Back Bay, taking over the space on Boylston Street where The Pour House used to be. As stated in an earlier article here, LGBTQ Nightlife Events is behind the new spot, saying at the time that "Our mission is to open Boston's first Queer Bar for women and non-binary LGBTQ+ community members who feel like we have no place."

The Pour House temporarily closed in March of 2020 after 34 years in business.

The address for Dani's Queer Bar is 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115. Its website is at https://danisqueerbar.com/ while its Instagram page is at https://www.instagram.com/danisqueerbarboston

Dani's Queer Bar Plans to Open in the Former Pour House Space in Boston's Back Bay

A year and a half ago, it was reported that one of the best-known bars in Boston would not be reopening, and now we have learned that a new bar that caters to the LGBTQ community may be moving into the space.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a Simmons Voice article) that Dani's Queer Bar is planning to open on Boylston Street in the Back Bay, with UH saying that the space it is looking to move into is that of the now-closed Pour House (this seems to be confirmed by a Google search). The Simmons Voice article mentions that LGBTQ Nightlife Events is behind the upcoming place that could be opening sometime this month, and a statement from the organization says that "Our mission is to open Boston's first Queer Bar for women and non-binary LGBTQ+ community members who feel like we have no place."

The Pour House temporarily closed in March of 2020 as the pandemic took hold, announcing in September of that year that after 34 years it would not be returning; it appeared for a brief time that there was a chance The Pour House could return, though those plans apparently fell through.

The address for the upcoming Dani's Queer Bar is 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115. Its website will be at https://danisqueerbar.com/

[August 17 update: Universal Hub indicates that Dani's Queer Bar is one step closer to opening, as the Boston Licensing Board has approved of the sale of The Pour House's liquor license to them.]

The Boston Eagle in the South End Is for Rent

One of the oldest gay bars in Boston appears to have closed for good.

According to a post from BosGuy, The Boston Eagle on Tremont Street is shuttered and now on the market, with BosGuy saying that "I started getting texts about four weeks ago that the Boston Eagle (a.k.a. "The Dirty Bird") had closed and was for rent. After doing a little digging I was able to confirm it is for rent. The lease for the 1,400 sq. foot bar also comes with the use of a license for food, entertainment and liquor until 2:00 AM." The drinking spot, which first opened more 40 years ago, was mostly a neighborhood bar, though BosGuy says that it catered "to all who could weather the withering stare from Jack the bartender."

The address for The Boston Eagle was 520 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Thanks to Universal Hub for initially bringing this to our attention.

The Alley Bar in Downtown Boston Has Morphed into a Restaurant of Sorts

A longtime gay bar in the heart of Boston is now serving food, which allows it to be open as the pandemic continues.

According to a source, the Alley Bar now has a kitchen within its space on PI Alley (just off Washington Street), with appetizers, burgers, and pizza being some of the options available to patrons. We have been told that a kitchen had apparently been in the works for awhile there--apparently before the coronavirus outbreak hit--and that with the food menu now offered at the bar, it can open now rather than having to wait for Phase 4 of the reopening of the Massachusetts economy, which might not happen for awhile because it is dependent on the discovery of a vaccine and/or therapeutic.

A Facebook post from the Alley Bar indicates that it reopens today (with its new food menu) at 4:00 PM.

The Alley Bar, which first opened in 2003, is a nightclub that has catered to the LGBTQ community over the years, though it never had food offerings until now.

The address for the Alley Bar is 14 PI Alley, Boston, MA, 02108. Its website can be found at http://www.thealleybar.com/

Fran's Place in Lynn Is Closing

The oldest gay bar in Massachusetts is getting ready to close its doors forever.

Eater Boston is reporting (via NECN) that Fran's Place in Lynn plans to have a goodbye party on Saturday, September 24, as the business is in the process of being sold. The bar dates all the way back to the 1920s, though it moved to its current location in the 1940s and was called Lighthouse Cafe until changing to its current name in the 1970s.

While the party takes place on Saturday, Fran's Place officially closes on Monday, September 26, according to NECN.

The address for Fran's Place is 776 Washington Street, Lynn, MA, 01901.
