Update: Cathedral Station in Boston's South End Is Not Closing After All, As the Proposed Dispensary May Open Next Door

Earlier today, it was reported that a neighborhood sports bar that is popular with the local LGBT community might be shutting down but now it appears that this is not the case after all.

A post by Michael Ratty within the South End Community Board Facebook group page indicated that he found out Cathedral Station on Washington Street may be replaced by a dispensary, with Leslie Seaton (who is the President of the East Berkeley Neighborhood Association) saying in the thread that the dining and drinking spot was indeed planning to close, and she posted a Zoom link to a January 3 EBNA meeting on the dispensary proposal. (Ratty also tweeted about the closure as well.) There has since been conflicting information on social media about this, including the possibility that there was confusion as to the address and that the dispensary may be going in next door instead. As soon as we get more clarification on this, we will post another update.

Cathedral Station first opened in 2014, taking over the space that had been home to the Red Fez, a Middle Eastern restaurant that had been open since 1940 (it reopened in 2002 after being closed for a number of years).

The Kartal Opens in Boston's South End

A bit more than a year ago, it was reported that a new dining and drinking spot was planning to open where one of the oldest gay bars in Boston had been, and now we have learned that it has debuted.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a post from BosGuy) that The Kartal is now open in the city's South End, moving into the former Boston Eagle space on Tremont Street. The article indicates that this is a soft opening, and that the new spot will be a cocktail bar, though few other details are known at this point in time.

The Boston Eagle had been in business for more than 40 years until shutting down in the early part of 2021.

The Boston Eagle Space in the South End Will Become Home to The Kartal

[Ed note: This article was updated in January and March of 2022 to reflect a name given to the new place.]

Earlier this year, it appeared that one of the oldest gay bars in Boston had closed. Now we have learned that the space might not be empty for too much longer.

According to a post from BosGuy, a new restaurant and bar is being planned for the South End space that had been home to The Boston Eagle, and though details are few, it looks like a couple will be behind the spot and that it will open in 2022. In early March BosGuy mentioned that the Tremont Street bar (which was also known as ("The Dirty Bird") was shuttered and for rent, saying at the time that "The lease for the 1,400 sq. foot bar also comes with the use of a license for food, entertainment and liquor until 2:00 AM."

The Boston Eagle had been in business for more than 40 years.

[January 21, 2022 update: A licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website indicates that the name of the place planning to move into the former Boston Eagle space will apparently be Kartel, and the manager listed is Shahrokh Reza, who is presumably the same person who is behind Pasha, a local restaurant, bar, and nightclub group.]

[March 31, 2022 update: BosGuy reports that the upcoming dining and drinking spot will be called The Kartal (not Kartel, as previously mentioned) and that it hopes to open in late April or early May if all goes well.]

The Boston Eagle in the South End Is for Rent

One of the oldest gay bars in Boston appears to have closed for good.

According to a post from BosGuy, The Boston Eagle on Tremont Street is shuttered and now on the market, with BosGuy saying that "I started getting texts about four weeks ago that the Boston Eagle (a.k.a. "The Dirty Bird") had closed and was for rent. After doing a little digging I was able to confirm it is for rent. The lease for the 1,400 sq. foot bar also comes with the use of a license for food, entertainment and liquor until 2:00 AM." The drinking spot, which first opened more 40 years ago, was mostly a neighborhood bar, though BosGuy says that it catered "to all who could weather the withering stare from Jack the bartender."

Update: Delux Cafe in Boston's South End Reopens After Closing for Much of the Winter

A beloved neighborhood bar in the South End of Boston appears to have closed for the winter.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Delux Cafe on Chandler Street has shuttered for the time being, with the Instagram page for the place saying "A huge THANK YOU to all of our wonderful friends and neighbors who have supported us through such a difficult time. Delux will be temporarily closed until further notice but we wish you all safe and happy holidays and hope to see you all again very soon!" It is not known when the bar might reopen, though other local spots that have temporarily closed are looking to reopen in the spring or when the pandemic lessens its grip on the restaurant industry, so it is possible that this would be the case with Delux Cafe, but as soon as we confirm, we will post an update here.

Delux Cafe is a longtime watering hole that is a favorite among locals, with the place being known for its unpretentious atmosphere along with its cocktails and reasonably-priced comfort food.

Le Canular Wine Bar Opens in Former Sister Sorel Space in Boston's South End

The team behind an American brasserie with Japanese influences has opened a wine bar in an adjacent space.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Le Canular is now open in Boston's South End, taking over the space next to Whaling in Oklahoma that had previously been used occasionally for overflow seating for the restaurant--and which used to be home to Sister Sorel. Tim Maslow took over both the Tremont 647 space and the Sister Sorel space last year, opening Whaling in Oklahoma in the Tremont 647 space; both Tremont 647 and Sister Sorel were run by Andy Husbands, who is now behind The Smoke Shop BBQ in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville.

Boston Magazine says that Le Canular offers such options as cheese plates, oysters, marinated vegetables, house-made pâtés, and more, with its menu eventually growing to possibly include burgers and other items, while drinks will focus on wines, all of which will be priced at $13. The bar is currently open from 6:00 PM to midnight Wednesday through Saturday.

Bar Mezzana Team Opening Shore Leave (a New Tiki Bar) in Boston's Ink Block Area

The group behind an Italian restaurant within a new development in Boston's South End will be opening a brand new spot across the street.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Colin Lynch, Heather Lynch, Jefferson Macklin, and Ryan Lotz of Bar Mezzana on Harrison Avenue in the Ink Block are planning to open Shore Leave, which will be a tiki bar and restaurant that is currently in design mode and could be opening later this year if all goes as planned. Very little information has been given on the upcoming spot, so stay tuned as more details start to come in.

Bar Mezzana first opened in the Ink Block in June of 2016, with the dining and drinking spot featuring coastal Italian fare.

[April 27 update: A licensing board hearing page indicates that Shore Leave is hoping to get its liquor license from The Gate (which is now closed) in Jamaica Plain, and the notice says that the place plans to have two bars within its space. The hearing is scheduled to take place on May 2.]

[November 16 update: Boston Magazine states that Shore Leave plans to open by early next week.]

[November 18 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that Shore Leave has softly opened, with its official opening taking place tomorrow (Monday, November 19) at 5:00 PM.]

New Hotel Lounge Coming to AC Hotel Boston Downtown in the Ink Block Area

It looks like a brand new hotel lounge is close to opening in a red-hot section of Boston just south of the downtown area.

According to various social media posts from bar manager Dennis Saint Aubin, a new dining and drinking spot is getting ready to open within the soon-to-open AC Hotel Boston Downtown in the city's Ink Block development. A message from Saint Aubin indicates that the space will be a "sleek, modern hotel lounge" that offers both food and drink, with some of the food options including clam chowder, New England crab cakes, artisanal burgers, Atlantic salmon, a bistro steak, herb-roasted chicken, and limoncello flutes, while craft beer, wine, and cocktails will be available, with a few drinks listed on the opening menu including gin and tonic, a smoked Manhattan, and a "Twisted Paloma" (Patron Blanco tequila, mezcal, agave nectar, lime juice, grapefruit soda). If all goes as planned, the new lounge could debut around March 1 when the hotel is scheduled to open.

Dennis Saint Aubin and Matthew Moore, who is the general manager of the new lounge, both worked at XV Beacon while Saint Aubin has been at such places as the now-closed Federalist and Abe and Louie's and Moore has worked at the Four Seasons.

The AC Hotel Boston Downtown (and the lounge) will be located at 225 Albany Street, which is between Traveler Street and Herald Street in the Ink Block area. Its web page is at http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/boscd-ac-hotel-boston-downtown/

Estragon to Open Bar Gogo in Former Las Ventas Space in Boston's South End

Last fall, we reported that a food shop and deli in Boston's South End had closed down, and that the space would be used by the restaurant next door. Now we have learned a bit more about how the space--which will be up and running next month--will be used.

According to an email sent yesterday, Estragon on Harrison Avenue is opening a Sunday night-only spot called Bar Gogo in the former Las Ventas space next door, while the space will be used for private functions and events the rest of the time. The email says that Bar Gogo will feature a supper menu and a rotating list of cocktails to patrons, with food coming from chef Julio de Haro and drinks coming from bartender Sahil Mehta. The bar will debut on June 12, according to the note.

Las Ventas--which is owned by the same family that runs Estragon--closed last November after being in business for approximately eight years.

Esquire's 2015 Best Bars in America List Includes State Park in Cambridge, J.J. Foley's in Boston's South End

A popular men's magazine has come out with its top 25 picks for bars in America once again, and this year, it has included a couple of local spots--and one of the picks may mollify at least some bar lovers.

According to the new article posted on its site, Esquire Magazine has included State Park in Cambridge's Kendall square among its picks, and it has also included J.J. Foley's in Boston's South End. Last year, the magazine picked the downtown Boston location of Foley's, leading to some confusion among locals, since the East Berkeley Street location in the South End is seen by many as an iconic bar, while the Kingston Street bar, while popular, doesn't have the same recognition and was seen by some as being the "wrong" J.J. Foley's to pick for the list .

In addition to Foley's in downtown Boston, last year's Esquire list also included The Hawthorne in Kenmore Square.
