The Pour House to Have Its Assets Sold in an Auction

What was once one of the best-known bars in Boston is going up for auction.

According to a post within the Paul Saperstein auctioneers website and a page within the Bidspotter site, The Pour House is having its assets sold in an online-only auction on July 19 at 11:00 AM. Included in the auction will be the bar's outdoor signs, neon lights, booths and tables, wood statue, and sports memorabilia, and the items will be available for inspection by appointment at the Stoughton office of the auctioneer.

The Pour House, which had been in operation for nearly 35 years in the Back Bay, temporarily closed in March of 2020 and announced a few months later that it would not be returning. A new spot called Dani's Queer Bar will be moving into the Boylston Street space that had been home to the bar.

Dani's Queer Bar Plans to Open in the Former Pour House Space in Boston's Back Bay

A year and a half ago, it was reported that one of the best-known bars in Boston would not be reopening, and now we have learned that a new bar that caters to the LGBTQ community may be moving into the space.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a Simmons Voice article) that Dani's Queer Bar is planning to open on Boylston Street in the Back Bay, with UH saying that the space it is looking to move into is that of the now-closed Pour House (this seems to be confirmed by a Google search). The Simmons Voice article mentions that LGBTQ Nightlife Events is behind the upcoming place that could be opening sometime this month, and a statement from the organization says that "Our mission is to open Boston's first Queer Bar for women and non-binary LGBTQ+ community members who feel like we have no place."

The Pour House temporarily closed in March of 2020 as the pandemic took hold, announcing in September of that year that after 34 years it would not be returning; it appeared for a brief time that there was a chance The Pour House could return, though those plans apparently fell through.

The address for the upcoming Dani's Queer Bar is 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115. Its website will be at https://danisqueerbar.com/

[August 17 update: Universal Hub indicates that Dani's Queer Bar is one step closer to opening, as the Boston Licensing Board has approved of the sale of The Pour House's liquor license to them.]

Hecate Opens in Boston's Back Bay April 7

A Greek restaurant and wine bar in Boston's Back Bay that opened in early 2020 will soon be joined by a European-style cocktail bar.

Eater Boston reports that Hecate is slated to debut below Krasi on Gloucester Street on April 7, with the upcoming spot--which can be accessed by a door in the back alley (Public Alley 443)--being what EB says is "cozy, but not claustrophobic" and limits parties to six while not allowing standing. In addition to cocktails, Hecate will also offer beer and wine along with alcohol-free drinks, while food items will include bar snacks such as popcorn and deep-fat fried shrimp toast.

Plans for Hecate (and Krasi) date back to 2019, when it was first announced that Krasi would take over the former Cafe Jaffa space.

The website for Hecate can be found at http://www.hecatebar.com/

Initial Plans to Reopen The Pour House in Boston's Back Bay Fall Through; Search for Prospective Operator of Space Continues

[Ed note: This article was updated on January 27 to reflect new information on the Pour House space.]

A couple of months ago, it was reported that rumors about one of Boston's best-known bars were coming true and that it would indeed be returning. Now we have learned that plans to reopen it have hit what appears to be a temporary stumbling block.

According to two sources, it is no longer a given that The Pour House will reopen in its former space in the Back Bay after all, though another source has subsequently told us that it--or another dining/drinking spot could still come to the space. In addition, a boston.com article mentions that building owner Charles Talanian says while negotiations with one potential operator fell through, there are other prospective operators in the pipeline, with Talanian indicating that it is possible a bar similar to The Pour House or an upscale restaurant could move in.

Back in September of 2020, The Pour House announced that it would not be reopening, though a couple of days later word came out that it could actually be reborn, and in November of 2021, we learned that it was reportedly planning to open back up under new management.

The Pour House, which first opened approximately 35 years ago, is one of several dining and drinking spots along Boylston Street that have closed down over the past couple of years.

The address for The Pour House was 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115.

[February 10 update: According to a source (and confirmed by a licensing board hearing notice), a new hearing on the proposed reopening of The Pour House is on the agenda this month, with the new manager listed (Steven Brooks) being the COO of C. Talanian Realty Co.]

The Pour House in Boston's Back Bay Plans to Return

A bit more than a year ago, it was reported that one of Boston's best-known bars had closed down, though it soon appeared that it could end up coming back. Now we have learned that it looks like it will indeed be opening back up.

According to a message sent to us this afternoon, The Pour House in the Back Bay is planning to return, with a licensing board hearing page within the city's website mentioning that the Boylston Street spot is seeking to acquire the liquor license which had been purchased by the landlord of the building. The notice states that Charles Hitchcock--who had been general manager of the now-closed McGreevy's on Boylston Street--is the manager, and the people behind The Pour House are also petitioning for an approval of a management agreement between 907 Boylston Street LLC and C and R Hospitality Managers, LLC. The hearing is slated to take place on Wednesday, December 1, so more details should be out in a few days.

The Pour House, which first opened approximately 35 years ago, temporarily closed in March of 2020 at the start of the pandemic, with the announcement of what looked to be either a permanent closure or a potential ownership change taking place in September of 2020.

The address for The Pour House is 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115.

[December 3 update: Universal Hub states that the new incarnation of The Pour House will be "exactly the same" as the old Pour House, with attorney Jon Aieta saying that "We're not reinventing the wheel here."]

The Pour House in Boston's Back Bay May Be Reopening

A couple of days ago, it was reported that one of Boston's best-known bars had closed for good, but now we have learned that the place could be returning.

According to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting, The Pour House in the Back Bay may be coming back, with a Boston Business Journal article saying that Charles M. Talanian, who is the principal owner of the real-estate firm that owns the Boylston Street dining and drinking spot, is working on negotiations where he would buy out his business partners and reopen it possibly within the next 30 days if all goes well. The article mentions that the lease for The Pour House was up in 2024, with Talanian apparently planning to connect the buildings housing The Pour House and the now-closed Lir and develop the space above them around that time, but the COVID-19 pandemic moved those plans up, with Talanian saying that "These bars can't function at 50% occupancy....You've got fixed costs. I can adjust the rent only so far, and then I've got to make the taxes, I've got to make the mortgage. … It's probably the hardest thing I've ever gone through in 50 years." (The BBJ says that the owners of Lir bought themselves out of the lease for a fraction of the remaining $1.7 million lease.)

The Pour House, which first opened nearly 35 years ago, temporarily closed back in March as the pandemic took hold and restaurants and bars were forced to shut down except for takeout/delivery.

The address for The Pour House is 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115.

Lir in Boston's Back Bay Is Closing for Good

Yet another dining/drinking spot on a stretch of Boylston Street in Boston's Back Bay is shutting down, with this one being a popular Irish pub that had been temporarily closed for several months.

According to a source, Lir is now closed, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this, saying the following:

We are sad to announce that after seventeen years of business we will be closing our doors for good. Since the day we opened we felt a strong connection to the Boston community, and we would like to say thank you to our loyal patrons who stood by us along the way....Our mission has always been to make Lir your home away from home, whether you're Irish, American, or a little bit of both. It pains us to leave you, but we can assure you that these memories will live on.

Lir is just one of a few Boylston Street places to close for good of late, with The Pour House, Whiskey's, and McGreevy's all shutting down permanently over the past several weeks.

The address for the now-closed Lir was 903 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115.

The Pour House in Boston's Back Bay Has Closed

It looks like yet another big name within the Boston restaurant/bar scene has shut down.

According to an Instagram post from the place, The Pour House in the city's Back Bay neighborhood has closed its doors, with the note from the Boylston Street spot saying the following:

It is with great regret to tell you that after 34 glorious years, it is time for us to say goodbye and thank you. Due to COVID the ownership of The Pour House will be changing hands....And so it is so very sad to say..........Sorry, we're closed. Thank you for your loyalty, dedication and patronage over the years. We will miss you all. And a special thanks to the many staff members over the years for all their hard work and effort. This all wouldn’t have been possible without all of you."

It is not known who might be taking over the Pour House space, nor is it known what might be opening there; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

The Pour House temporarily closed back in March as the pandemic took hold, resulting in Massachusetts restaurants and bars only being able to do takeout/delivery for a number of weeks. There had been a lot of chatter about the bar closing for good this spring and summer, but messages sent to them went unanswered and no one was able to completely confirm that it had closed until now.

The address for the now-closed Pour House was 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115.

Thanks to Universal Hub for bringing this to our attention via a message this evening.

McGreevy's in Boston's Back Bay Has Closed

A Back Bay sports bar that was headed up by the leader of a popular local band has shut down.

According to a source, McGreevy's on Boylston Street is no longer in operation, with an article from bostonmanmagazine.com having a quote from Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphys where he says the following:

McGreevy's was my start in the restaurant business, but I have sad news: McGreevy's will not open after the pandemic....It's heartbreaking to me. Who knows, maybe someday we'll open in another location. But the landlord wanted April rent, and full May rent … and June — what are you going to do?"

McGreevy's first opened in 2008, with the name coming from "Nuf Ced" McGreevy, who opened a bar called the 3rd Base Saloon in Boston in the late 1800s. (His name was also mentioned in the 2004 Dropkick Murphys hit "Tessie.")

Ken Casey is also behind The Yellow Door Taqueria in the South End and Dorchester and the Lower Mills Tavern in Dorchester, all of which remain open for business.

The address for McGreevy's was 911 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02115.

Whiskey's in Boston's Back Bay Has Closed Down; Exact Status of Space Up in the Air

A longtime watering hole in the Back Bay of Boston has shuttered, and it isn't known what might become of the space.

According to a source within the restaurant industry, Whiskey's on Boylston Street is closed, saying that it is "100% done," which comes on the heels of several other sources and posters on social media indicating that the place may have shut down permanently. (Phone calls over the past couple of days went unanswered and its website appears to be down.) The bar had temporarily shuttered back in March when the statewide restaurant shutdown was put in place by the Baker administration, and it never did reopen even as Phase 2 began last month. While we do hear some chatter about the space, its exact future is unknown at this point in time, so keep checking back for updates.

Whiskey's was mostly known as a casual place to go to for a drink and some pub grub along with BBQ options.

The address for Whiskey's is 885 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Rattlesnake Bar & Grill in Boston's Back Bay Going to Auction January 25

An iconic Back Bay spot is on its way to the auction block after closing its doors in the fall.

According to a source, the Rattlesnake Bar & Grill on Boylston Street is having a bankruptcy sale on Wednesday, January 25, with a page from bostonrestaurantequipment.com showing that an array of kitchen items and fixtures will be auctioned off that day, including tables, chairs, draft beer systems, doors, pots, pans, file cabinets, and more. The dining and drinking spot shut down in November of 2016 and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation around the time of its closure, with a creditor's meeting apparently taking place late last month.

The Rattlesnake Bar & Grill had been in business for more than a quarter century.

The address for the now-closed Rattlesnake Bar & Grill was 384 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Daisy Buchanan's Could Be Returning to Boston's Back Bay

Early last year, we mentioned that an iconic bar in Boston's Back Bay that had shut down in late 2014 could be returning, though there was no confirmation of this happening at the time. Now we have learned that this may indeed be happening after all.

Universal Hub is reporting that plans are being worked on to bring Daisy Buchanan's back to the neighborhood (apparently to its original home at the corner of Newbury and Fairfield streets), with owner Joe Cimino looking to reopen it as a smaller bistro-style spot with a limited menu. The post says that Cimino is hoping that the city will allow him to keep Daisy's liquor license as we works out the exact plans for the place, which attorney Stephen Miller says could be "some months away." The licensing board is expected to make a decision on Thursday, according to UH.

Daisy Buchanan's, which first opened in 1970, closed down in November of 2014 as its building was being slated for renovations that would apparently allow for high-end retail development. The building remains shuttered as renovations continue to be done.
