Hemlock Grill Is Opening in the Former VineRipe Grill Space in Brookline

A new restaurant is on its way to a golf course in Brookline, and a couple of familiar names are behind the spot.

According to an article in Wicked Local, Hemlock Grill is planning to open in the former VineRipe Grill space at the Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course off the West Roxbury Parkway, with Hemlock Grill owner Chris Yorty and business partner Alex Saenz currently being behind Bisq Meats & Sandwiches at Time Out Market Boston in the Fenway (Saenz is also co-owner of Taqueria El Barrio at Time Out Market). The post mentions that Hemlock Grill will be a casual restaurant that focuses on American fare, including such items as breakfast sandwiches, a summer beet and berry salad, a Caesar wrap, a cold fried chicken sandwich, and a smokehouse BLT, along with beer and wine.

The upcoming opening of Hemlock Grill, which has a one-year contract at the golf course, comes on the heels of a controversial decision by town officials to say goodbye to VineRipe Grill after 13 years, which led to public outrage over the closing of the beloved restaurant. Yorty indicates that Hemlock Grill hopes to continue the community connection that VineRipe had, saying the following:

I was in all those meetings, listening to the outpouring of support for [owner Lisa Wisel], and then I spent a week with her when she was moving out and I was offering her the ability to use our space while we're there to keep her commitments through the summer and everything....Just serving good food doesn't strictly, you know, dictate success....You need to be involved in the community, so once we get our feet under us, we would love to make the same connections that Lisa had, whether it's donations of food, time, the space – all of that stuff is on the table.

The website for Hemlock Grill can be found at https://www.hemlockgrill.com/

[June 17 update: A message sent to us indicates that Hemlock Grill is now open.]

Golf Courses in Massachusetts Allowed to Reopen, But Their Restaurants Must Remain Closed for Now

Governor Charlie Baker has brought a bit of good news to golfers in Massachusetts, though the good news does not extend to those who want a bite to eat before or after a round.

According to an article from NBC Boston, golf courses in the commonwealth are allowed to reopen as of yesterday, though this comes with many restrictions, one of which is the fact that restaurants and clubhouses must remain closed based on information given on a page within the Mass Golf website. The restrictions extend to golf facilities in general, which means that bar areas will also not be allowed to open, while golf shops and locker rooms will have to be shuttered as well.

Currently, restrictions on restaurants in Massachusetts remain in place through May 18, though it is possible that this date could change. As mentioned earlier, the order only allows dining and drinking spots to offer takeout/delivery, though it isn't yet known if golf course restaurants might be able to offer these options now that the courses are open; as soon as we find out additional information on this, we will post an update here.

Update: G'Vanni's to Oversee Emerald Grill at Franklin Park Golf Course

[Ed Note: This article has been updated as of July 26. G'Vanni's is overseeing the restaurant at the Franklin Park Golf Course, not opening an actual G'Vanni's restaurant there.]

An Italian restaurant with two locations in the Boston area and one other in Florida is going to be overseeing a dining spot near the Roxbury/Dorchester line, and this one looks to be much like the Florida restaurant.

According to EveryBlock Boston, G'Vanni's on the Green has received a business license for a restaurant at 1 Circuit Drive, which happens to be the address of the Franklin Park Golf Course (also known as the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park). The location in Deerfield Beach, FL also resides on a golf course, and has the name G'Vanni's on the Green, while the original G'Vanni's can be found on Prince Street in Boston's North End (another G'Vanni's opened on Boston Road in Billerica in 2008).

[July 26 update: According to CBS Boston, G'Vanni's is overseeing a place called the Emerald Grill at the Franklin Park golf course. It is also overseeing the Shamrock Grill at the George Wright course in Hyde Park.]

The William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park is one of the oldest public golf courses in the country, first opening in 1896. The web link for this 18-hole course can be found at http://cityofbostongolf.com/golf/proto/cityofboston/course_williamdevine/course_williamdevine.htm
