The Halal Guys Opens in Newton

Last summer, it was reported that a growing chain of halal spots with roots in New York City would be opening a new location in the western suburbs of Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to a press release, The Halal Guys is now open in Newton, moving into a space on Needham Street just south of where it meets Dedham Street and Winchester Street and a short distance south of Route 9. The new location offers some new menu items including a lamb and beef gyro, waffle fries, and a berry mint refresher, and it joins others locally in downtown Boston, the Theater District, the Fenway, South Bay, Cambridge's Porter Square, Dedham, and further out, in Shrewsbury.

The Halal Guys first started out in 1990 as a food cart in Manhattan.

Nakhon Has Replaced Rice Away Thai Express in Brighton

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a Thai restaurant that was known for its buffet had closed, and now we have learned that the people behind it have converted the place into another type of Thai spot.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Nakhon  is now open in Brighton, replacing Rice Away Thai Express on Washington Street. The new restaurant features Southern Thai halal cuisine, as was first mentioned by Boston Magazine (which states that it debuted last month). Some of the items on the menu include curry pancakes, steamed shrimp and chicken dumplings, curry rice and spicy and sour sauce, ground chicken and shrimp in chili paste, fried whole striped bass fish, a spicy and sour beef stew, crab meat in coconut curry, and turmeric chicken soup, crispy, duck, drunken noodle, and squid ink fried rice.

Last spring, it was reported that another new location of a chain of halal spots with roots in New York City would be coming to the heart of Boston, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to a press release, The Halal Guys has its grand opening today and tomorrow in the city's downtown area, opening in a space on Washington Street on the northern edge of Downtown Crossing just south of State Street and Court Street. The new location joins another in the Theater District along with others in the Fenway, South Bay, Cambridge's Porter Square, Dedham, and further out, in Shrewsbury. 

The Halal Guys, which began in 1990 as a food cart in Manhattan, offers such items as chicken and rice, falafel, gyros, hummus, and baklava.

Last summer it was reported that a chain of NYC-based halal restaurants would be expanding to a third location in the Boston area, and now we have learned that it is on the verge of opening.

According to a press release, The Halal Guys is planning to have its grand opening on Friday, September 22, with the new spot offering such items as gyros, chicken and rice, hummus, baklava, and more. Once it opens, the new outlet will join others locally in Boston's Theater District and Cambridge's Porter Square, with another Massachusetts location being found in Shrewsbury as well.

Jejes Coffeehouse Is Opening in Wellesley

A new spot for coffee, baked goods, and more is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston, and it will be a kosher place.

Universal Hub is reporting (via kvhkosher.org) that Jejes Coffeehouse is planning to open in Wellesley March 8, with The Swellesley Report saying that its Kosher certification means that its offerings will be accessible to kosher/halal diners. In addition to coffee made using freshly-roasted organic fair trade beans, Jejes will also offer cookies, madeleines, muffins, and scones, along with organic tea.

Shah's Halal Food Plans to Open in Boston's Beacon Hill Neighborhood

A growing group of Middle Eastern restaurants whose roots are in New York City is planning to expand to not one, but two more spaces in the Greater Boston area, with one being right in the heart of the city.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Shah's Halal Food is planning to open a takeout-only location on Cambridge Street, moving into a space near Bowdoin Street on the edge of Beacon Hill. If given the green light to open (its plans were approved by The Zoning Board of Appeal this week but still needs an ok from the Boston Licensing Board), the new location would join one in Boston's Fenway/Back Bay and another in the works in Walpole, along with others on Long Island, north of New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey, and elsewhere. (A handful of Shah's food trucks and carts can be found in Queens and elsewhere.)

Shah's Halal Food Is Opening in the Former GG Pizza Company Space in Walpole

A group of Middle Eastern restaurants whose roots are in New York City has expanded to a second location in the Greater Boston area.

According to a tweet from @JeremyKrantz, Shah's Halal Food is getting ready to open in Walpole, taking over the space in the Walpole Mall where GG Pizza Company had been, and before that, a location of Papa Gino's. Based on the other shops, expect to find such options as gyros, a variety of items over rice (including chicken, lamb, and falafel), salads, sandwiches, pita with hummus, baklava, and more, using 100% certified halal products.

The new eatery joins another location in Boston's Fenway/Back Bay along with a number of others on Long Island, north of New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey, and elsewhere. (A handful of Shah's food trucks and carts can be found in Queens and elsewhere.)

 A growing chain of NYC-based halal restaurants will be expanding to a third Boston-area location.

According to a source, The Halal Guys plans to open at South Bay in Dorchester, with a page on edens.propertycapsule.com confirming this, showing that the dining spot will open on District Avenue within the mixed-use development. Once it opens, the new location will join others in Boston's Theater District and Cambridge's Porter Square, along with approximately 100 other locations in the United States and elsewhere--and more than 400 new outlets in the works, according to its website.

Based on the menu at the other locations, expect to see such items as chicken and rice, gyros, falafel sandwiches, hummus, and more at The Halal Guys at South Bay.

Cafe Vanak Opens in Belmont

A brand new Persian restaurant has opened in the western suburbs, and it has a connection to a market next door.

Eater Boston is reporting (via The Boston Globe) that Cafe Vanak is now open in Belmont, taking over a space on Belmont Street that is next to Super Vanak. The articles say that the new eatery offers Halal Middle Eastern and Iranian fare, including tabouli salad, grilled eggplant, stuffed grape leaves, lamb shank, saffron chicken, Persian stew, chicken kababs, and more.

Update: Halal Eatz Opens in Burlington

[Ed note: This article was updated on August 11 to reflect a new name given to the place.]

A new burger spot that features a 100% Halal menu--and which could be the start of a chain--has come to the northern suburbs of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Halal Shack is now open in Burlington, moving into the space on Cambridge Street that had been home to the Burlington Cold Cut Center. The new eatery, which is apparently run by the people behind Al Maidah across the street, offers burgers along with chicken, beef, seafood, falafel, and lamb platters, while gyros, subs, and wraps are also available as well.

The new eatery will join another on Stuart Street in Boston along with nearly 100 other locations in the United States and elsewhere, and based on the offerings at the Boston location, expect to see such items as chicken and rice, gyros, falafel sandwiches, hummus, baklava, and more.

Hot Chix Halal Is Opening in Medford Square

A new dining spot that features halal food is on its way to Medford.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Hot Chix Halal is opening in Medford Square, moving into a space on High Street on the same block as Salvatore's restaurant (between Governors Avenue and Bradlee Road). Based on a menu posted on the ieatery.com site, it appears that the restaurant offers Indian dishes that are considered halal, or prepared according to Islamic dietary guidelines. It looks like there are also some other types of cuisine served as well, with rotisserie chicken, baby back ribs, burgers, and chicken nuggets, along with a "Bay of Bengal" section of the menu that includes fish masala, shrimp saag, and fish curry.

Shah's Halal Is Opening in Boston's Fenway/Back Bay Area

It looks like a growing group of Middle Eastern restaurants with locations in and around New York City is on its way to Boston.

According to a source (Geoff Wong), Shah's Halal is planning to open on Boylston Street near where the Fenway and the Back Bay meet, with the address indicating that it may be moving into the space where Crazy Dough's Pizza had been. Based on the menus at the other locations of Shah's Halal, the new outlet in Boston could offer such options as gyros, various items over rice (including chicken, lamb, falafel, fish, and kofta kebabs), salads, sandwiches, pita with hummus, baklava, and more, using 100% certified halal products.

Shah's first started out as a food cart in Queens in 2005 and now has a handful of brick-and-mortar locations in Queens, Long Island, and north of New York City.

Chile Mango & Lime in Weymouth Has Closed

A Thai and Bangladeshi restaurant that started out as a food truck has apparently closed its doors.

According to a source, Chile Mango & Lime in Weymouth is no longer on business, with a sign initially saying that the Washington Street eatery was temporarily closed but now indicating that this is a permanent closure. Chile Mango & Lime featured halal food, with a few items offered including samosas, chicken satay, spring rolls, wings, pad Thai, chicken curry, chili mango fried rice, and more. The restaurant morphed from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the latter part of 2016, though the food truck continued to be used for events.

The Halal Guys Opening in Boston's Theater District; More Locations on the Way

A year and a half ago, we reported that a legendary group of restaurants and carts based in New York City was looking to expand to the Boston area. Now we have learned that it will open a location in the heart of the city--and more outlets will be coming to the region as well.

According to a press release sent this morning, The Halal Guys is opening in City Place Building at 137 Stuart Street in Boston's Theater District sometime in July, and this will be followed by shops in Downtown Crossing, the Financial District, the North Station/TD Garden area, the Back Bay, and Cambridge's Porter Square. Expect to see such options as chicken and rice, hummus, falafel sandwiches, and baklava at the new shop in the Theater District and the other upcoming locations.

A legendary group of restaurants and carts based in New York City is planning a major expansion, and the Boston area is included in its plans.

Eater Boston is reporting that The Halal Guys announced a deal that will bring six locations to Boston along with a total of more than 200 others in the United States and beyond. The article says that the franchise consulting firm Fransmart--which also works with the expansions of Five Guys and Qdoba--will be bringing shops to Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Atlanta as well.

Chicken and Rice Guys Opening Restaurants in Downtown Boston and Medford

A couple of years ago, we reported that a Boston-area food truck was planning to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant just north of Boston. Now we have learned that both that location and another one in the heart of downtown Boston will be opening this spring.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, the people behind the Chicken & Rice Guys food truck are hoping to open a restaurant on Salem Street in Medford later this spring, with another one that they recently announced opening on Bedford Street in Boston's Financial District possibly by early April. The article mentions that this latter location is taking over the space where the Korean/Mexican eatery InBoston had been before closing last month. (Other locations of InBoston can be found near Symphony Hall and in Waltham.)

Chicken and Rice Guys to Open Brick-and-Mortar Restaurant in Medford

It looks like yet another Boston-area food truck will be opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant.

Eater Boston is reporting that the folks behind the Chicken & Rice Guys truck are looking to open a permanent dining spot and are asking their fans via a Facebook post where they should be looking. (They indicated that Allston may be at the top of the list right now.) No other information has been given at this point, and it's not known when this may happen, so keep checking back for updates.

The Chicken & Rice Guys food truck debuted in April of 2012, offering halal chicken and rice with white sauce or spicy red sauce options.
