Pie Me Over Is Opening in Wilmington

A new pie shop is coming to the northern suburbs of Boston, and this place will focus more on savory pies.

According to a post from Eater Boston, Pie Me Over is planning to open in Wilmington on November 7, with the Main Street shop's website indicating that it will be offering such options as chicken pot pie, top sirloin pie, chicken curry pie, and veggie pie, and more. Owners Marje Hammond and Feliciano Savilengo opened a pie shop in Las Vegas in 2014, with this essentially being a relocation of that shop from Nevada to Massachusetts. The website for Pie Me Over claims that this is the "first retail pie shop of its kind in Massachusetts and across the country selling unbaked fresh & frozen pies with a variety of crusts."

The address for this new pie shop in Wilmington is: Pie Me Over, 217 Main Street, Wilmington, MA, 01887. Its website can be found at https://www.piemeover.com

Po' Boys and Pies Is Opening Brick-and-Mortar Location in Salem

A pop-up spot on the North Shore that is known for its inventive twists on Southern food has found a permanent home.

A Facebook post from the place confirms what a source told us a couple of weeks ago, that Po' Boys and Pies will be opening a brick-and-mortar dining spot in Salem, though the exact address is being kept secret for the time being. Once it opens, expect the new eatery to serve po' boys, a sandwich that is especially popular in New Orleans, and offbeat takes on Southern-style pies.

Po' Boys and Pies first started out as a pop-up in 2016; its website can be found at https://www.poboysandpies.com/

[September 4 update: The Things to Do in Salem website mentions that the brick-and-mortar location of Po' Boys and Pies is now open.]

Darwin's to Open on Putnam Avenue in Cambridge, Taking Over Petsi Pies Space

by Marc Hurwitz

Several years ago, we reported that a location of a pie shop/cafe in Cambridge could be closing to make way for a new location of a group of sandwich shops, but the plans ultimately appeared to fall through. Now it looks like this will be happening after all.

According to a license commission hearing agenda page within the city's website, Darwin's Ltd. is looking to open a new outlet at 31 Putnam Street, with the address indicating that it will be moving into the space where Petsi Pies cafe resides. Back in 2013, an article about Petsi opening in East Cambridge mentioned that it appeared these plans had been in the works with the Putnam Avenue location of Petsi closing at some point and Darwin's taking over the space, but Petsi never did end up closing.

Other locations of Darwin's can be found in Harvard Square, Central Square, and between Inman and Harvard Squares while another location of Petsi Pies can be found on Beacon Street in Somerville.

[January 28 update: A message sent to us confirms that Darwin's will definitely be taking over the Petsi space on Putnam Avenue, with Petsi apparently closing this week. (We have also been told that the Beacon Street location of Petsi will remain in operation.)]

[January 30 update: A new message sent to us says that Petsi Pies will close its Putnam Avenue shop tomorrow (Thursday, January 31) and Darwin's plans to open in its space on Saturday, February 2.]

Petsi Pies in East Cambridge Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A trio of bakeries known in part for their pies is now down to just two, as one of their Cambridge locations is now closed.

According to a source, Petsi Pies in East Cambridge is no longer in operation, with a check on the Facebook page for the business confirming that the Cambridge Street shop shut down over the weekend. It appears that locations of the bakery on Putnam Street in Cambridge (which is a bakery-cafe) and Beacon Street in Somerville (which is a bakery and coffee bar) remain in operation.

The East Cambridge location of Petsi Pies had originally been a few blocks away from its most recent location, with both locations being on Cambridge Street.

The address for the now-closed location of Petsi Pies in East Cambridge was 594 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, 02141. The website for the remaining two locations can be found at https://petsipies.com/

Boston Cream Pie Company in Holbrook Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A suburban retail shop that focused on a popular regional item has shut down.

According to a source, Boston Cream Pie Company in Holbrook is no longer in business, with the windows of the South Franklin Street shop being papered over. Our source tells us that a pub may be taking over the space, though no other information has been given on the proposed spot as of yet, so stay tuned.

Boston Cream Pie Company first opened in Holbrook last summer, with the business originally selling the Boston Cream Pies (along with other pies) from tricycles stationed in Boston. Although the tricycles were still being used when the shop first opened, it is not known if they are still running, and it appears that the website for the company has been taken down.

The address for the now-closed Boston Cream Pie Company shop was 783 S Franklin Street, Holbrook, MA, 02343.

BakerBaker in West Roxbury Is Closing

A bakery in a Boston neighborhood is getting ready to close after four years in business.

Universal Hub is reporting via a Facebook post that BakerBaker in West Roxbury is shutting down at the end of the week, with a note within the Facebook thread indicating that Thursday may be the last full day for the Spring Street shop--though owner Fran Kolenik will apparently be at the store on Friday morning as well. Another note in the thread mentions that Kolenik is looking into a way to sell pies--possibly via delivery--though nothing has been decided upon as of yet.

BakerBaker has been known in part for its pies, cakes, and cupcakes, along with cookies, soups, salads, sandwiches, and more.

The address for BakerBaker is 168 Spring Street, West Roxbury, MA, 02132. Its website can be found at http://www.bakerbaker.co/

Boston Cream Pie Company Opens at the Longwood Galleria in Boston

A collection of shops and eateries in Boston's Longwood medical area is now home to a new spot, and this one focuses on a local favorite.

Eater Boston is reporting that Boston Cream Pie Company has opened a kiosk at the food court within the Longwood Galleria on Brookline Avenue, with the place offering traditional Boston cream pies (sponge cake filled with cream and covered with chocolate) along with other takes on the treat, including pies topped with white chocolate, heath bars, sprinkles, Oreo cookies, and more. An earlier Facebook post mentions that the business--which was established in 2014--had holiday locations at the Hanover Mall and at the Arsenal Project in Watertown, but those shut down late last month. (It also has a vending tricycle on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in downtown Boston during the warmer months.)

The Longwood Galleria's food court is home to such dining spots as Beantown Burrito, Bourbon Street Cafe, Dragon Bowl, and Sakura Japan.

Petsi Pies Moving to New Location in East Cambridge

[Ed note: This article was updated on November 14 to reflect confirmation that this is indeed a move.]

The person behind three bakeries in Cambridge and Somerville is opening a new location in East Cambridge.

Eater Boston is reporting (via the City of Cambridge) that Renee McLeod of Petsi Pies is planning to open a new location at 594 Cambridge Street in East Cambridge, which is only about three blocks east of another Petsi Pies at 441 Cambridge Street. It appears that this is a move, though this has not been confirmed as of yet; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.\

Other locations of Petsi Pies can currently be found on Beacon Street in Somerville and Putnam Street in Cambridge, though as mentioned in an earlier article, the Putnam Street location could be closing at some point to make way for a new location of Darwin's Ltd.

[November 14 update: Cambridge Day mentions that this is indeed a move, with Petsi Pies going from 441 Cambridge Street to 594 Cambridge Street; in addition, the article says that McLeod has also renewed a lease for its Putnam Street location, so the rumors about Darwin's taking over the space appear to be untrue.]

[January 22, 2015 update: Eater Boston states that Petsi Pies is now open in its new location on Cambridge Street.]

Petsi Pies Is Opening in East Cambridge

It looks like the person behind a bakery in Somerville and a cafe in Cambridge is opening a second location in Cambridge, and it will be moving into the space where a coffee bar used to be.

A License Commission General Hearing page on the City of Cambridge website states that Renee McLeod of Petsi Pies has applied for a common victualer license to open a shop on Cambridge Street, with the address showing that it would go into the former RJ Gourmet spot (RJ Gourmet closed in September). The note says that the new Petsi Pies could have seating for 15 and would tentatively be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily.

Locations of Petsi Pies include a bakery on Beacon Street in Somerville and a cafe on Putnam Street in Cambridge. Renee McLeod is also one of the owners of Tupelo, a Southern-style comfort food restaurant in Cambridge's Inman Square.

[November 1 update: A bit more info on this story--Eater Boston says that the location of Petsi Pies on Putnam Street in Cambridge will be closing because its lease is expiring in 2015. An earlier Harvard Crimson article mentioned that Darwin's Ltd., which bought the building, plans to open a new sandwich spot/bakery in that space once Petsi is gone, so the upcoming Petsi shop on Cambridge Street will apparently be a substitute for the one on Putnam Street. It is not yet known whether the Putnam Street shop will close before its lease is up; stay tuned for additional updates.]

[February 18, 2014 update: A new article from Eater Boston indicates that Petsi Pies is now open in the former RJ Gourmet space on Cambridge Street.]

The address for this new shop in Cambridge is 441 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, 02141. The website for Petsi Pies can be found at http://petsipies.com/

Owner of Bread and Chocolate Bakery Cafe in Newton to Compete on Throwdown! with Bobby Flay

The co-owner of two bakeries and cafes in Newton will soon be seen on The Food Network, competing against a celebrity chef to see who makes the best Boston cream pie.

According to The Boston Globe, Eunice Feller of Bread & Chocolate Bakery Cafe will be featured on "Throwdown! With Bobby Flay" at 8:30 PM (EST) on March 9, facing off against Flay, who will challenge her to see who can make the best pie. This is not the first time that Bobby Flay has come to the Boston area, as some may recall that he was here for another challenge a few years ago, losing to Joanne Chang of Flour Bakery in a sticky bun throwdown.

Eunice and her husband Steve both run the two bakeries/cafes in Newton, which can be found on Madison Avenue in Newtonville and Hartford Street in Newton Highlands.

For more information on the upcoming Boston cream pie throwdown, please go to the Boston Globe link below.
