Yakitori Totto, Shake Shack Are Coming to Somerville's Assembly Row

It looks like two big names are on their way to a growing mixed-use development in Somerville.

According to a source, Yakitori Totto and Shake Shack are planning to open at Assembly Row, with a page within federalrealty.com listing both restaurants within the tenant roster section. Yakitori Totto is a highly-rated Japanese restaurant in New York that features grilled chicken on skewers, and was once shown on America's Best Bites, while celebrity chef, author, and television personality Anthony Bourdain (who passed away in 2018) once took CNN's Anderson Cooper to dinner there and said that "I totally recommend the Skin, it's crunchy and delicious!" according to the website for the place. Shake Shack, which has seven locations in the Greater Boston area, also has its roots in New York City, having started out there approximately 20 years ago.

It isn't yet known when Yakitori Totto or Shake Shack might open at Assembly Row, so stay tuned for updates.

Shake Shack Plans to Open a New Outlet at the Burlington Mall

A New York-based group of burger and shake spots appears to be expanding further into the Greater Boston area, with a new outlet being planned for a suburban mall that also became home to a location of a legendary pizza spot a few weeks ago.

According to a source (Craig Foster), Shake Shack is looking to open at the Burlington Mall, with an application within the burlington.org site indicating that it would be somewhere within the old Sears space, which is being redeveloped. If approved, the new location of Shake Shack in Burlington would join others in Boston's Seaport District and Back Bay along with outlets in Cambridge's Harvard Square, The Street Chestnut Hill, and Legacy Place in Dedham--and another new location is on its way to the Arsenal Yards complex in Watertown as well. [Ed note: The Watertown location is now open, along with other new ones in Boston's Downtown Crossing, Somerville, and Woburn.]

[October 30 update: A press release has confirmed that Shake Shack will indeed be opening at the Burlington Mall, with the restaurant slated to debut in the spring of 2020.]

[July 30, 2021 update: According to a press release, the Burlington location of Shake Shack--whose planned opening last year was affected by the pandemic--will have its grand opening on Monday, August 2, and $1 will be donated to Project Bread for every burger sold that day.]

by Marc Hurwitz

A New York-based group of burger and shake spots is expanding further into the Boston area, with one now being planned for a new development just west of the city.

Eater Boston is reporting that Shake Shack is going to be opening a new outlet in Watertown, moving into the upcoming Arsenal Yards complex along Arsenal Street near the Charles River. Once it opens, the new location will join others in Boston's Seaport District and Back Bay along with outlets in Cambridge's Harvard Square, The Street Chestnut Hill, and Legacy Place in Dedham. [Ed note: Another new outlet is now open in Boston's Downtown Crossing as well.]

Arsenal Yards will be a mixed-use development located at the site of the old Arsenal Mall, with the complex including retail, office, and residential space; it looks like much or all of the project will be finished by 2020, which is when Shake Shack could open.

The website for Shake Shack can be found at http://www.shakeshack.com/

[December 13, 2019 update: According to a press release, the new Shake Shack at Arsenal Yards has its grand opening on December 21.]

[December 16 update: A Twitter thread from @HarmyG indicates that Shake Shack has actually already opened at Arsenal Yards, with a page within the Arsenal Yards website confirming this.]
