El Triunfo Opens in Boston's North End

A Mexican and Salvadoran restaurant in the South End of Boston has just opened a second location, this one being in a section of the city known for its Italian eateries.

According to several sources, including posters on Chowhound and Yelp, El Triunfo is now open on Prince Street in the space where the vegan dining spot Grezzo used to be, and before that, the Italian restaurant Sage. El Triunfo, whose original location is on East Berkeley Street, features such items as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, papusas, tamales, and enchiladas--expect similar items at the new Prince Street location, which appears to have opened over the past weekend.

An article within the NorthEndWaterfront.com site indicates that the new El Triunfo in the North End is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with hours being 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

The Fat Cactus Is Opening in Randolph

A Mexican restaurant in Lynnfield may be getting ready to open a second location, this one being south of Boston.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, The Fat Cactus is planning to open in Randolph sometime this month. The job post mentions that the new restaurant will be located on North Main Street (Route 28), within the Comfort Inn hotel, which is just south of the Route 128/93/1 intersection. The original Fat Cactus opened in February of 2010 on Route 1 in Lynnfield, taking the place of Lucille's Fine Chicken and before that, The Naked Fish.

Expect The Fat Cactus in Randolph to feature such items as chili, tacos, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, chimichangas, and quesadillas.

Firefly's in Quincy to Be Replaced By a Bank

It looks like a barbecue joint that opened in Quincy about four years ago is closing to make way for a bank, though if it happens, the restaurant appears interesting in finding another home somewhere in the city.

According to the Patriot Ledger, the Adams Street building in which Firefly's resides may be torn down, with a branch of TD Bank being built in the space. The article mentions that the owner of Firefly's, which has two other locations in Framingham and Marlboro, has 16 years remaining on the building's lease, but the bank would look to purchase the lease if given approval by the city to build on the site. If the building is torn down, Firefly's would be interested in looking for another spot in Quincy, according to the article.

[April 7 update: According to the restaurant's Facebook page, Firefly's in Quincy has indeed closed, with today being the closing day.]

Several other restaurants have called the Adams Street space their home in the years before Firefly's, including Red Sauce, Naked Fish, and The Hollow.

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer Coming May 2 to May 8, 2011

A fundraising event that raises money via dessert items sold by eateries is returning to Boston next month.

An email sent to us about the event indicates that the 12th annual Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer is coming to the city starting on Monday, May 2 and going until Sunday, May 8. As always, the event will feature desserts from Boston-area and New England restaurants, cafes, and bakeries, with each spot selecting one specific dessert from its menu that will be the special Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer dessert. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the specific desserts (which start at $3) will go to breast cancer research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Some of the places participating include AKA Bistro in Lincoln, Cafe Barada in Cambridge, Dessert Works in Westwood, Haru in Boston, Joseph's Bakery in South Boston, Mission Oak Grill in Newburyport, Norabella in West Dennis, Rino's in East Boston, Stellina in Watertown, Sugar Plum Bakery in Kingston, Trio Cafe in Whitman, Willy's Steakhouse in Shrewsbury, and many, many more.

Aikia Steak House Japanese Restaurant and Bar Opens in Swampscott

A new Japanese restaurant has just opened up on the North Shore, several months after asking the town permission for a name change for the eatery.

According to The Swampscott Reporter and Wicked Local, Aikia Steak House Japanese Restaurant & Bar is now open on Paradise Road in the Vinnin Square section of town, Originally, the dining spot was going to be called 8 Asia Restaurant, but the people behind the restaurant decided to ask for the name to be changed to reflect the fact that it is a Japanese steakhouse, according to an earlier Swampscott Reporter article.

The most recent article mentions that Aikia Steak House Japanese Restaurant & Bar is open for lunch and dinner daily, and features group hibachi-style meals, as well as private dining booths and a function area. In addition to steaks and other Japanese entrees, sushi is also offered.
