Fire + Ice in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Closing

A pick-your-own ingredients restaurant in Cambridge's Harvard Square that has been around for two decades is getting ready to say farewell.

According to a source, Fire + Ice on Church Street is closing its doors for good on Monday, September 12, with an email from the dining spot referring customers to its location on Berkeley Street in the Back Bay of Boston starting that day (it appears that the Cambridge location will shut down at the end of business hours on Sunday, September 11). An update from Fire + Ice indicates that its other restaurants in Providence, RI, Lake Tahoe, CA, and Anaheim, CA remain in operation as does its Back Bay restaurant.

Fire + Ice first opened in Harvard Square approximately 20 years ago, offering what is basically a buffet with a variety of meats, seafood, veggies, pasta, and sauces from which to choose, along with appetizers, desserts, and cocktails.

The address for Fire + Ice in Harvard Square is 50 Church Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138.

Kirin Teppanyaki & Wok Taking Over Former Redneck's Roast Beef Space in Allston

A new Asian restaurant is opening in Allston, and it is taking over the space where a late-night eatery that was popular with college students and clubgoers had been.

According to a licensing board page within the city of Boston website, Kirin Teppanyaki & Wok is replacing Redneck's Roast Beef, which had been in the Brighton Street space for a bit more than a decade before closing either late last year or early this year (and it had apparently changed to Cafe Mitti before shutting down, though the Redneck's sign remained). A website for Kirin is currently up and running and it indicates that it may already be open, though we are trying to confirm this; the site shows a mix of Chinese and Japanese dishes including such items as boneless spare ribs, crab rangoon, sushi, teppanyaki steak, pork belly udon soup, and beef with mixed vegetables.

Redneck's was known in part as an after-hours spot for such items as pizza, calzones, roast beef, pulled pork, and steak tips.

The address for Kirin Teppanyaki & Wok (and the former Redneck's Roast Beef) is 140 Brighton Ave, Boston, MA 02134. The website for Kirin can be found at http://kirinteppanyakiandwok.com/

[September 22 update: Eater Boston states that Kirin Teppanyaki & Wok is now open.]

Opa Greek Yeeros in Somerville's Davis Square Has Closed; Future of the Place Unknown

A Greek dining spot in Somerville has closed after only a few months in business, and it is not known for sure if/when it might reopen again.

According to a Facebook thread within the Davis Square group, Opa Greek Yeeros is currently closed, with calls placed to the eatery ringing with no voicemail and no one answering, while the Highland Avenue spot has been designated as "permanently closed" in a Google search for the restaurant. One of the posters within the thread who is apparently involved in the Somerville government also says that Opa has shut down for good, though we are still trying to get complete confirmation on this. (Another poster said that there is a "closed for vacation" sign out front.)

Opa Greek Yeeros first opened in April in the space where Kickass Cupcakes had once been, offering traditional Greek gyros as well as items such as spanakopita, kebabs, and baklava.

The address for Opa is 378 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA, 02144.

Thanks to one of our sources for initially bringing this to our attention.

[September 6 update: One of our sources tells us that Opa's chef (who was also a partner in the business) has left the place and is getting ready to open a new spot in Nashua, NH, called What a Bagel.]
