Bok Bok Thai Chicken & Rice Is Opening in the Former Master Pies Artisan Pizza Space in Arlington Heights

A new dining spot is opening in the northwest suburbs of Boston, taking over the space where a pizza spot had been.

According to a poster within The Arlington List Facebook group page, Bok Bok Thai Chicken & Rice is opening in Arlington Heights, moving into the former Master Pies Artisan Pizza space on Mass. Ave. Master Pies was under the same ownership as the adjacent Ginger Exchange Express, and it appears that Bok Bok Thai Chicken & Rice is under the same ownership as well which would indicate that this may simply be a concept change, though we are still trying to confirm this.

Ginger Exchange Express and Master Pies Artisan Pizza first opened in the summer of 2021 in the space where Great Wok had once been; other locations of Ginger Exchange can be found in Boston's Mission Hill and in Watertown.

The address for Bok Bok Thai Chicken & Rice (and Ginger Exchange Express) is 1181 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

The Heights Pub Opens in Arlington Heights

A neighborhood restaurant and bar in the northwest suburbs of Boston debuts today, and the owner of a nearby dining and drinking spot is behind it.

According to a Twitter thread from @briankenney7, The Heights Pub opens at 4:00 PM in the old Balich 5 & 10 space in Arlington Heights, with a Facebook post from the Mass. Ave. place confirming this, saying "No reservations, first come first served. Come down and put in your name and phone number and we will call you once your table is ready. We are expecting a big crowd tonight, so please be patient. We look forward to seeing everyone." Plans have been in the works for The Heights Pub since the spring of 2019, with Jim O'Rourke of the First House Pub in Winchester running the place, and like the First House Pub, expect to see comfort food, pub grub, and classic American fare at the new spot along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Prep Neighborhood Kitchen to Open in Former Boston Pizza and Curry Space in Arlington Heights

A new dining spot is coming to the northwest suburbs, taking over the space where a short-lived Indian/Nepalese restaurant and pizzeria had been, and before that, a Greek pizza spot.

According to an article from the Arlington Advocate and Wicked Local, Prep Neighborhood Kitchen is planning to open in Arlington Heights, moving into the former Boston Pizza and Curry space on Mass. Ave. The post mentions that the upcoming eatery will offer such items as sandwiches, pasta dishes, pizza, house-made desserts, and family meals such as a Featherbrook Farms Whole Chicken that comes with truffle smashed potatoes, whole wheat sourdough bread, and whipped butter. The dining spot will have some seating but it appears to be geared more toward takeout and catering, according to the article.

Boston Pizza and Curry replaced the Villa House of Pizza early last year; the Villa had once been located a few blocks west by the Arlington/Lexington line.

The address for the upcoming Prep Neighborhood Kitchen is 1367 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[November 2 update: A post within the Arlington, MA Pizza Discussions Facebook group indicates that Prep Neighborhood Kitchen plans to have a soft opening on Friday, November 5.]

Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli Is Opening in Arlington Heights

Earlier this year, a Japanese grocery store with locations in Connecticut and New York opened its first Boston-area outlet in Brookline, and now we have learned that another location will be on its way to the local area.

A source tells us (via the Support Arlington Heights Facebook group page) that Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli is planning to open in the former Prime space in Arlington Heights, with a Facebook post from the business confirming this, saying that the new shop could be opening at the end of the year or in January. Based on the offerings at the store in Coolidge Corner along with other shops in West Hartford, CT, and Scarsdale, NY, the new outlet may such items as ramen, sushi, bento boxes, sashimi grade fish, bubble tea, and Japanese meats, breads, coffee, and tea. (The post hints that this may be more of a supermarket than the others, as there will apparently be no seating for dining.)

Maruichi opened in the former Gen Sou En Tea House space on Harvard Street in Brookline in February of this year.

[January 11, 2021 update: According to a Facebook post, Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli had been hoping to open its Arlington store over the weekend but there was a "last minute hold-up" from the town. It does look like the place is on the verge of opening, however, with a new opening date planning to be announced this week.]

Abbott's Frozen Custard Is Opening in Arlington Heights

A small chain of frozen custard shops that recently closed one of its Boston-area locations will be opening a new shop in the northwest suburbs--and it will be located about midway between two of its other three stores in the region.

A post within The Arlington List Facebook group page mentions (via a post from the chain) that Abbott's Frozen Custard is planning to open in Arlington Heights, with the post from the business saying "Hey there Arlington Heights...we are coming to you with our 2nd Arlington location! Stay tuned right here for all of the opening details." Once it opens, the new shop will join its other Arlington outlet (which is in Arlington Center) along with a store a few miles up the road in Lexington Center, and another in Needham.

A Brighton outlet of Abbott's--which is based in Rochester, NY--shut down last month.

The website for Abbott's Frozen Custard can be found at https://www.abbottscustard.com/

Villa House of Pizza in Arlington Heights Is Now Boston Pizza and Curry

A suburban sub shop and pizzeria that has been serving Greek pizza for a long time now has changed over to a new place that features pizza along with Indian and Nepalese food.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Villa House of Pizza in Arlington Heights has become Boston Pizza and Curry, with the website for the new eatery showing such items as momos, chicken tikka masala, chicken biryani, paneer korma, pizza, calzones, and a variety of sandwiches--and one of its pizza options is a chicken tikka masala pizza.

Villa House of Pizza was once located on Mass. Ave. by the Arlington/Lexington line, but it eventually moved a short distance east into the heart of Arlington Heights, and another poster on the Facebook group page says that they had actually been serving curry dishes while still being the Villa House of Pizza.

The address for Boston Pizza and Curry (and the former Villa House of Pizza) is 1367 Massachusetts Ave, Arlington, MA, 02476. The website for the place can be found at https://www.bostonpizzaandcurry.com/

Boutique Hotel, Restaurant Proposed for Arlington

A new hotel could be on its way to the northwest suburbs of Boston, and it may include a restaurant and/or bar.

An article in YourArlington confirms what we were told by a source last week, that a boutique hotel is being proposed for the former Disabled American Veterans site and the still-running Precision Tire and Alignment on Mass. Ave. on the eastern edge of Arlington Heights, with the post saying that the four-story hotel would have 50 rooms and an upscale dining spot. Our source tells us that the ground-floor restaurant could actually be some sort of brewpub or tavern, though no specific details have been given as of yet; a hearing on the proposal is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 22, so more information on the dining/drinking spot (and the hotel) should be known by next week.

The address for the DAV was 1207 Mass. Ave., while the address for Precision Tire and Alignment is 1211 Mass. Ave.; the two properties are about a block east of the Mass. Ave./Lowell Street fork.

[July 23 update: A meeting at Town Hall last night gave some additional information on the proposal, including the fact that the plan is indeed to open an upscale restaurant on the main floor of the hotel, though the plans are in their initial stages for both the hotel and the restaurant, so things could change as more meetings take place.]

The Heights Pub Plans to Open in Arlington Heights; Jim O'Rourke of First House Pub Behind It

The person behind a neighborhood dining and drinking spot in the northern suburbs is going to be opening a second spot nearby.

According to a Facebook post, Jim O'Rourke of the First House Pub in Winchester has signed a lease to open The Heights Pub in Arlington Heights, taking over the space on Mass. Ave. where Balich 5 & 10 had been until it closed last June. A note within the Facebook thread indicates that much like the First House Pub, the new place will be a family-friendly neighborhood spot that will likely offer comfort food, pub grub, and classic American fare. The Heights Pub still needs to receive approval from the Zoning Board, Select Board and ABCC before it can open, so stay tuned for updates on the place.

First House Pub first opened in Winchester Center in the fall of 2015 in the former Stone Hearth Pizza space, with O'Rourke coming from Conley's Pub in Watertown which had an initial connection to the place.

The address for this upcoming dining and drinking spot in Arlington Heights is: The Heights Pub, 1314 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[September 3 update: The Heights Pub could be one step closer to opening by next week, as Your Arlington states that a Redevelopment Board hearing is slated to take place on Monday, September 9 that will look into a special permit centering around relief from parking requirements.]

[March 2, 2020 update: The issue surrounding parking had put the status of The Heights Pub in question, but plans for the restaurant took a big step forward last week as The Arlington Advocate states that a variance concerning parking has been approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals. The next steps for the dining spot now include the clearing of a 20-day appeal period followed by approval of both a liquor license and expansion of the space. If all goes well, The Heights Pub could be opening sometime this summer.]

[March 4, 2021 update: An article from the Arlington Advocate indicates that The Heights Pub hopes to finally open its doors later this year, with construction planning to start in a few months, which a check on the space shows that a sign is now up for the place.]

Update: Yassou Is Opening in Former Capri Space in Arlington Heights

by Marc Hurwitz

[Ed note: This article was updated on September 17 to reflect new information on the upcoming dining spot.]

It looks like a new eatery is on its way to Arlington Heights, taking over the space where a pizzeria had been for a quarter century.

According to several sources, work is being done on the old Capri Pizza & Subs space in Arlington Heights, with a check on the Mass. Ave. storefront showing a sign out front that says "Closed Due to the New Opening." We hear from a few sources that the upcoming dining spot may be featuring gyros and that it will not be called Capri, though nothing has been completely confirmed as of yet.

Capri shut down twice over the past few years, including in early March of 2016 (briefly) and then again in March of 2017; it had previously been home to Charlie's Pizza.

The address for the former Capri Pizza & Subs (and the upcoming eatery) 1323 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[September 17 update: According to a poster on The Arlington List Facebook group page, the new restaurant going into the former Capri space will be called Yassou, with a check on the space indicating that the place will apparently be a Greek eatery, offering such items as gyros, souvlaki, spinach pie, and feta pie, while it also looks like it will serve pizza as well.]

[January 18, 2019 update: A new post on The Arlington List Facebook group page indicates  that Yassou plans to open on January 25.]

Home Taste in Watertown to Open New Location in Former La Posada Space in Arlington Heights

by Marc Hurwitz

A Chinese restaurant in Watertown is expanding to Arlington, moving into the space where a Mexican dining spot had been until late last year.

According to a note from @kcbaskin of The Boston Globe and a post from Your Arlington, Home Taste is planning to open on Mass Ave. in Arlington Heights, taking over the former La Posada space. Based on the menu at the location on Mt. Auburn Street in Watertown Square (which opened back in September of 2015), expect to see hand-pulled noodles, handmade dumplings, Chinese "burgers," mala pots, spicy Szechuan dishes, and more at the upcoming restaurant. No opening date has been given as of yet for the new location of Home Taste, so keep checking back for updates.

La Posada closed its doors last December after being in business for a bit less than eight years.

The address for the upcoming Home Taste in Arlington Heights is 1312 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476. The website for the Watertown location can be found at https://www.hometastema.com/

[June 27 update: Wicked Local states that Home Taste plans to open in Arlington Heights in mid-July.]

[July 29 update: A post on The Arlington List Facebook group page indicates that Home Taste opens its new Arlington Heights location on August 1.]

[August 1 update: A check on the place last night indicates that the opening of Home Taste in Arlington Heights has been delayed and that it is now looking at an August 8 opening.]

Update: La Posada Restaurante in Arlington Heights Is Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

A longtime favorite for Mexican food is locked up and dark, and it is not known for sure what is going on with the place.

According to a poster on The Arlington List Facebook group page, La Posada Restaurante in Arlington Heights is closed at least for the time being, with another poster showing a photo of a note inside the door of the Mass. Ave. spot. The note starts with "Dear Santa" and indicates that they want to be open again, thanking customers for their support and mentioning something about money apparently owed to "Fresh Pond Shopping Center," which could be a reference to a vendor there, though no explanation has been given. We are currently trying to get more details on the closing of the place, so keep checking back for updates.

La Posada is a spot that has been featured on our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) as an under-the-radar restaurant to go to for Mexican fare. The review can be found at the following link:

http://www.hiddenboston.com/LaPosada.html

The address for La Posada Restaurante is 1312 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[January 9, 2018 update: The Arlington Advocate mentions that La Posada Restaurante remains closed and it is not known when it might open again, as its landlord (Fresh Pond Trust) is owed approximately $20,000 in back rent and they won't be able to reopen until that money is paid. (Thanks to a source for bringing this to our attention.)]

[January 22, 2018 update: The future of La Posada appears to be more in doubt now, as a LoopNet post indicates that the space is now for lease. (Thanks to a poster in The Arlington List Facebook group for bringing this to our attention.)]

[January 28, 2018 update: A check on La Posada confirms the update above, as "For Lease" signs are now in the windows of the place.]

Lakota Bakery in Arlington Heights Is Now Cookie Time Bakery

A beloved suburban bakery that has been in business for more than 25 years now has a new name--though that is apparently the only change to the place.

According to an article in Your Arlington, Lakota Bakery on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Heights is now called Cookie Time Bakery, as owner Barbara Weniger says that "When I started in 1991, I picked the name Lakota, because it reflected that I was from South Dakota and my husband at the time was part Micmac, and the word Lakota translates as 'allies.' But it has been 42 years since I lived in South Dakota, and the name really has no connection to the cookies nor to my longtime staff." Weniger goes on to say that her products will remain unchanged and her staff will continue working at the shop, as this is only a name change.

Lakota Bakery has been known in part for its wide variety of cookies along with its cakes.

The address for Lakota Bakery/Cookie Time Bakery is 1375 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

Granolabowl Cafe to Open in Arlington Heights

A new cafe and coffee shop is its way to Arlington, and it will be located inside another business.

According to an article in the Arlington Advocate, Granolabowl Cafe is looking to open within the Art Lounge in Arlington Heights, with the people behind a granola company called The Roasted Granola being behind it. The post says that the Art Lounge already has existing kitchen space and that owners Emily Patel and Sarah Short plan to be open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and weekends from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM when the Art Lounge isn't running.

The Arlington Board of Selectmen approved of Granolabowl Cafe's plans last week.

The address for the upcoming Granolabowl Cafe (and the Art Lounge) is 1346 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[September 12 update: A new blurb within the print edition of the Arlington Advocate indicates that Granolabowl Cafe plans to open around the middle of October, and that it will offer granola, oatmeal, baked goods, chia pudding, coffee, tea, smoothies, and more.]

[July 7, 2018 update: According to a post within the Arlington List Facebook group page, Granolabowl Cafe plans to have a grand opening later this month, though it is unsure whether the grand opening will be July 17 or July 21 (the former date could be a soft opening, but we'll try to confirm this).]

[July 10, 2018 update: A comment within the Arlington List group page clarifies the above update, saying that Granolabowl Cafe opens on July 17 and that a joint celebration with the ArtLounge will take place on July 21.]

Capri Pizza & Subs in Arlington Heights Could Reopen Once Again

A longtime suburban pizzeria that has quietly closed twice over the past year or so may reopen yet again, though no specific plans are currently in place for it to open back up.

The Arlington Advocate confirms what we had reported last month, that Capri Pizza & Subs in Arlington Heights is indeed closed, with owner Miltos Athanasopoulos indicating that the closure is due to one of the cooks leaving and his not being able to get someone else to take over the position. Athanasopoulos does say that he may look to reopn the Mass. Ave. shop later this year, though no exact date has been given at this point in time. A bit over a month ago, we mentioned that Capri was locked up and dark, and at the time, no reason had been given for its closure; the pizzeria had also shut down in early March of 2016, but reopened a month later under new ownership.

Capri first opened in the early 1990s, taking over the old Charlie's Pizza space.

The address for Capri Pizza is 1323 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

Capri Pizza & Subs in Arlington Heights Is Closed Again

A suburban pizzeria that has been in business for a quarter century has closed once again, and it is not yet known if/when it may reopen.

A check on the place over the past several days indicates that Capri Pizza & Subs in Arlington Heights is locked up and dark, with posters within the Facebook page of The Arlington List confirming that it has been shuttered for awhile now--possibly for the past several weeks. No reason has been given for the closure of the Mass. Ave. spot, though there has been some chatter about why it may have closed; as soon as we get confirmation on what exactly has happened with Capri, we will post an update here.

Capri also quietly shut its doors in early March of 2016, but reopened a month later--apparently under new ownership--with the previous owner of the pizzeria appearing to offer to help in the reopening of the shop. The eatery first opened in the early 1990s, taking over what had been Charlie's Pizza.

The address for Capri Pizza is 1323 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[April 27 update: The Arlington Advocate mentions that the owner of Capri--Miltos Athanasopoulos--would need to complete a plan review process if he wishes to open it back up, noting that "it may have difficulty" doing so; the article says that the dining spot changed ownership last year without going through a proper plan review process at the time, and the town had asked Athanasopoulos to make some changes to the place after the ownership change, but at least some of these changes have still not been made.]

Digumm's in Arlington Heights Seized Again for Failure to Pay Taxes

An ice cream shop that replaced the last location of an iconic chain of ice cream parlors has been shut down for money owed once again.

According to an article in The Arlington Advocate, Digumm's in Arlington Heights is closed with a seized sign out front, with the Your Arlington site saying that the Department of Revenue shut it down because the owners owe $38,417 in taxes, and the business is now in the possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, based on a sign shown in the Advocate article. This is the third time that the Mass. Ave. ice cream shop has closed since it replaced Brigham's, including the store being seized last year for money owed in rent, real estate taxes, and water charges.

It is not known if/when Digumm's will open again; as of this afternoon, it remains locked up, according to posters in The Arlington List Facebook group page.

The address for Digumm's is 1328 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.

[December 12 update: A check on the place last night indicates that the "Seized" sign is still posted out front at Digumm's.]

[January 11, 2017 update: Based on a photo posted on The Arlington List Facebook group page, it looks like the "Seized" sign at Digumm's has been replaced by a "For Lease" sign.]

Jimmy's Pizzeria in Arlington Heights Is Being Replaced by Nina Trattoria and Pizza

A pizza spot and sub shop in a northwest suburb of Boston that is full of pizza spots and sub shops is going to change into a brand new eatery with a new name.

The Arlington Advocate is reporting that Angelo Carbini--who is currently a waiter at the Florentine Cafe in the North End of Boston--is taking over Jimmy's Pizzeria in Arlington Heights and will replace it with a new spot called Nina Trattoria and Pizza. The article says that the 19-seat restaurant on Mass. Ave. will be open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, serving house-made Italian items including antipasti (Prince Edward Island mussels and beef carpaccio will be two options), lobster ravioli in a vodka cream sauce, and veal saltimbocca, with freshly-made pastas being offered. Carbini has not yet applied for a liquor license, but he may do so in the future, according to the Advocate.

Jimmy's Pizzeria first opened its doors more than a decade ago.

The address for Jimmy's Pizzeria (and the new Nina Trattoria and Pizza) is 1510 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476.
