The Langham Hotel in Downtown Boston Reopens This Summer; Will Include New Restaurant, Bar

An historic hotel in the heart of Boston that shut down for renovations a couple of years ago is finally getting close to opening back up, and it will feature a new restaurant and a new bar.

Eater Boston is reporting (via The Boston Globe) that The Langham Boston at One Post Office Square plans to reopen in June and that it will be home to an Italian restaurant called Grana that will initially be open for breakfast, lunch, and a weekend brunch. In addition, a bar called the Fed will also open within the hotel, while in-room private dining will be an option for guests.

The Langham, which closed for renovations in the spring of 2019, had previously been home to BOND, The Reserve, and Cafe Fleuri while also having chocolate bar brunches as well.

The website for The Langham Boston can be found at https://www.langhamhotels.com/en/the-langham/boston/

[March 12 update: According to an article in The Boston Globe, the chocolate bar will not be returning to The Langham Boston, as the space will become a ballroom, but a spokesperson for the hotel indicates that "vestiges of the chocolate will appear on restaurant menus."]

[July 1 update: According to a press release, The Langham Boston is now open, with The Fed slated to open on July 12.]

[July 13 update: Eater Boston confirms that The Fed is now open, with the space having the feel of a British pub and the food and drink offerings having regional influences including a seafood tower, stuffies, lobster BLTs, and local beer and cider options while cocktails include spiked frappes.]

[September 9 update: According to the web page for the restaurant, Grana is now open.]

Bella Luna/Milky Way Liquor License May Be Headed for Boston's Seaport District

A few months ago, it was reported that a beloved dining, drinking, and entertainment spot in Jamaica Plain had shut down. Now we have learned that its liquor license may be going to an upcoming dual-branded hotel in Boston's waterfront area.

According to a licensing board hearing page, Bella Luna and The Milky Way are petitioning to transfer their license to Hampton Inn/Homewood Suites in the Seaport District, with the notice saying that the development--which will be located by the Raymond F. Flynn Marine Park between Terminal Street and Summer Street--will have nearly 6,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space and could be opening in the spring of 2021, based on the web pages for both hotels which say they are taking reservations for April 1 and beyond.

Bella Luna and The Milky Way announced their permanent closure in June, three months after closing temporarily due to the coronavirus outbreak. The two places had resided in the old Haffenreffer Brewery complex on Amory Street, and before that, in the Hyde Square area of JP.

Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro in Boston Has Closed For Renovations

A hotel and restaurant that resides in an historic building in Boston has shut down for at least the time being, and it is not known exactly what will be happening with the space at this point in time.

According to a source, the Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro on Charles Street is closed, with a post on its Facebook page saying "It is bittersweet that we announce that we have closed for renovations. We truly appreciate all of your loyalty & friendship, and are so excited to be creating a new space to share with all of you in the coming months. Stay tuned here and on our website for more information!" Our source isn't sure what may be happening to the space, and no other information has been given by the business other than a note on its website saying that it is closed for renovations, so keep checking back for updates.

The Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro first opened approximately 20 years ago in a space that dates back to the 1800s.

The address for the Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro is 25 Charles Street, Boston, MA, 02114. Its website (which now appears to be mostly taken down) is at https://beaconhillhotel.com/

[January 16 update: A check on the place indicates that a sign out front says the Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro will have a "new look but the same smiling faces" and that it plans to reopen this summer. It is not known what changes might be coming, including whether it will keep its name, what the concept of the restaurant may be, and whether it will be under new ownership, so keep checking back for more updates.]

Ames Boston Hotel Is Closing; Property to Be Sold to Suffolk University

A downtown Boston hotel that had been home to a restaurant owned by one of the region's best-known chefs is shutting down this week.

The Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog is reporting that the Ames Boston Hotel on Court Street is closing tomorrow (Tuesday, September 24) as the property is being sold to Suffolk University. As mentioned in an earlier Boston Globe article, the plan is to convert the property into dorms, though Adam Castiglioni's blog post mentions that those plans apparently still need to be approved by the city.

The Ames Hotel is where Cultivar had been until closing early this year; the upscale restaurant opened in the spring of 2017, with Mary Dumont (formerly of Harvest in Cambridge) and her wife Emily being behind it.

Mandarin Oriental Boston Hotel (Home of Bar Boulud) to Be Sold for $140 Million

Last spring, we reported that a high-end Back Bay hotel and condo building that is home to an upscale French restaurant was heading to the auction block. Now we have learned that it will be sold for what will end up being the highest per-room price ever in the city of Boston.

According to an article in the Boston Business Journal, the Hong Kong-based Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group International Ltd. is planning to purchase the Mandarin Oriental Boston for $140 million, or $945,945 per room, with the sale likely becoming official in the first quarter of this year. The post says that the hotel group has a management contract that allows it to purchase the hotel from CWB Hotel LP for a sum equivalent to the highest bid offered during the auction. The deal will presumably include Bar Boulud, a restaurant that Chef Daniel Boulud opened within the hotel in September of 2014. (The original Bar Boulud opened in New York in 2008.)

The Mandarin Oriental Boston and Bar Boulud can be found at 776 Boylston Street by the Prudential Center.

Plans for a Kosher Hotel and Restaurant to Open in West Roxbury Have Apparently Fallen Through

Earlier this year, we reported that a unique type of hotel and restaurant could be coming to Boston; now we have learned that this apparently will not be happening after all.

Universal Hub mentions that the property on the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury where a kosher hotel and a glatt-kosher restaurant was being considered has been sold to the owner of a gas station and car wash in Brockton. The proposed spot--which was tentatively going to be called the King David Hotel--had been the idea of developer Nissim Shimon Trabelsi, with the plan being to work with a hotel management company to possibly start a chain of kosher hotels and restaurants. (It is not known if these plans have fallen through as well.)

In addition to lodging and dining, the hotel was also going to include "his and hers mikvah baths," a swimming pool, and a ballroom.

Mandarin Oriental Boston Hotel (Home of Bar Boulud) May Be Heading to Auction Block

A high-end Back Bay hotel that is home to a relatively new French restaurant appears to be headed toward the auction block.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Irish Bank Resolution Corp. is looking to sell the Mandarin Oriental Boston hotel on Boylston Street and is seeking approval of an auction from a bankruptcy judge. The article says that IRBC, which came to be after Anglo Irish Bank Corp. was dissolved and nationalized by the Irish government, is hoping to sell the property while the real estate market in Boston is still hot, and that some of the hotel's apartments have already been put up for sale as condos.

The hotel, which is run by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, is home to Bar Boulud, a high-end restaurant that Chef Daniel Boulud opened last September. (The original Bar Boulud opened in New York in 2008.)

The Mandarin Oriental Boston and Bar Boulud are located at 776 Boylston Street by the Prudential Center.
