Short Path Distillery in Everett Is Looking to Open a Cafe

A distillery just north of Boston is making plans to add a new addition to its space.

According to a page within the numarket.co website, Short Path Distillery in Everett is raising funds to help open a cafe within its Kelvin Street facility, with the page saying the following:

Have you ever spent an afternoon in the Fermentation District of Everett and thought "I wish there were a cafe around here". Us too! There's a serious lack of coffee and communal workspaces in our neighborhood and we want to fix that. The Cafe at Short Path Distillery will be a new addition to our current cocktail bar. By making investments in our space with your help, The Cafe will offer not only quality coffee and espresso drinks, but also a cozy workspace for those seeking somewhere to escape. Our menu will include espresso drinks, drip coffee, cold brew, specialty offerings, and baked goods. The best part -- we're partnering with a local roaster and want your help in choosing which one.

Short Path Distillery first opened in 2015, offering such options as rum, whiskey, gin, ouzo, brandy, and more.

The address for Short Path Distillery is 71 Kelvin Street, Everett MA, 02149. Its website can be found at http://shortpathdistillery.com/

Dorchester Brewing Company and Aeronaut Brewing to Merge

A couple of local breweries are going to be joining forces.

According to posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page along with an Instagram post, Dorchester Brewing Company and Aeronaut Brewing in Somerville and Everett are merging, with the Instagram post saying the following:

As two likeminded local brands with similar missions to create the highest-quality craft beer while positively impacting our communities, this partnership will usher in a new era of innovation in the local craft beer scene. Never fear, the beer you know and love will continue to be brewed and enjoyed by all. Both beer brands are staying as is and functioning independently - just now under one parent company allowing us to make things even better! For you, our customers, nothing really changes on your end. You get to continue enjoying all your favorite beers from both DBC and Aeronaut at each of our local taprooms and throughout the local beer scene. We are moving Aeronaut's larger-scale production to our Dorchester location, while the Aeronaut team will continue to brew small batch beers for their own taprooms at their Somerville location, with the Everett Cannery taproom continuing to operate into 2024. We are beyond excited about this partnership and look forward to what the future brings!

Dorchester Brewing Company debuted on Massachusetts Avenue in 2016, while Aeronaut Brewing first opened on Tyler Street in Somerville in 2014 (its Everett cannery was launched on Ashland Street in 2020). The website for the former is at https://www.dorchesterbrewing.com/ while the website for the latter is at https://www.aeronautbrewing.com/

Bone Up Brewing Co. in Everett Is Closing

Earlier this fall, it was reported that the future of a brewery just north of Boston was in question, and now we have learned that it is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Bone Up Brewing Co. in Everett is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the Norman Street spot saying the following:

In news that won't come as a surprise to many of you, but which is nonetheless very difficult for us to deliver, we are officially announcing that Bone Up will be closing at the end of this year; our anticipated last day of taproom service will be Sunday, December 31....At the heart of this is, of course, the ongoing dispute we've been having with our landlords since early this year. There's more to it, of course, but there's only so much detail we can/should go into here and now....

The post mentions that the people behind the brewery have no plans at the present time to reopen in a new location, though "We're not ruling that out as a possibility....the future of Bone Up - if there can be a future - would look less like 'moving to a new location' and more like 'starting something new in a different spot' (though, again, this is purely hypothetical at the moment)."

Bone Up Brewing Co. first opened its taproom in the summer of 2016.

The address for Bone Up Brewing Co. is 38 Norman St, Everett, MA 02149. Its website is at https://www.boneup.beer/

[January 1, 2024 update: Its social media confirms that Bone Up Brewing Co. is now closed.]

The Future of Bone Up Brewing Co. in Everett Is in Question

A brewery just north of Boston that has been trying to expand for a couple of years is now facing an uncertain future.

According to a message sent from Nichole Davis of WBZ 1030, Bone Up Brewing Co. in Everett is struggling to remain open, with a blog post from the place saying the following:

Since August 2021...we have been working with our landlords to expand our footprint within the building....Progress crawled in 2022....As of now this expansion that we have been talking about for two years still isn't complete. On top of all that, for reasons we’re still not entirely clear on, our landlords have informed us that they no longer wished to keep us as tenants and may have started taking actions to remove us from the building....things aren't looking particularly rosy at the moment....To be frank, we've been preparing for the worst, because things have been going steadily downhill for months....[We're not closing] yet, anyway, but it's a lot more likely than it seemed at the beginning of the year.

Bone Up Brewing Co. first opened its taproom in the summer of 2016 in an area of Everett known as the Fermentation District, which includes Night Shift Brewing and Short Path Distillery.

The address for Bone Up Brewing Co. is 38 Norman St, Everett, MA 02149. Its website can be found at https://www.boneup.beer/

Night Shift Brewing to Cease Most of Its Production at Its Everett Facility; Will Focus on Contract Brewing for Foreseeable Future

One of the biggest breweries in Massachusetts has made an ominous announcement that could ripple through the local beer world.

According to an Instagram post from the business, Night Shift Brewing has made the decision to scale back production at its Everett facility and rely on contract brewing at Jack's Abby in Framingham and Isle Brewers Guild in Pawtucket. The note, which was posted earlier today, says the following:

Last week, we learned that our CO2 supply has been cut for the foreseeable future, possibly more than a year until we get more. Breweries depend on CO2 to make beer, so this was pretty awful news to get. Seems like this will be an issue that impacts a lot of local breweries, so we're probably one of many breweries facing this new threat to our business....Yesterday, we met with our production team of twelve people and shared the news and the implications. What we shared is that, come October 1, we won't likely have jobs for many of this team. Everett brewing will continue, but more as an R&D facility with a smaller crew.

The post does say that none of Night Shift's taprooms or beer gardens will be closing and that those who lose their jobs will get a severance package--and in the long-term, if the brewery has CO2, they will continue to brew beer in Everett, but at a smaller scale.

In addition to its Everett facility, Night Shift also has outlets at Boston's Lovejoy Wharf, Encore Boston Harbor, and Level99 in Natick, and six of their Owl's Nest beer gardens are scattered throughout the local area. The website for Night Shift can be found at https://nightshiftbrewing.com/

Aeronaut Brewing Co. in Somerville to Expand to Down the Road Beer Co. Space in Everett

A Somerville brewery is expanding to Everett, taking over the space where another brewery had been.

According to an article from boston.com, Aeronaut Brewing Co. in Somerville is taking over the former Down the Road Beer Co. space in Everett, having already bought the brewing equipment from Down the Road while finalizing a lease for the Ashland Street facility earlier this year. The post mentions that the goal is to increase beermaking capacity so that Aeronaut can get more into the wholesale end of things while also experimenting with new beers as well. The new space--which will be called Aeronaut Cannery--hopes to debut an outdoor patio at some point this fall, though it is not known when (or if) an indoor taproom might get up and running.

Down the Road shut down last summer following the death of founder Donovan Bailey; there had been chatter about the brewery possibly returning but boston.com says there are currently no plans to do so right now.

Aeronaut can be found at 14 Tyler Street near Somerville's Union Square, while the upcoming Aeronaut Cannery will be at 199 Ashland Street between Encore Boston Harbor and the Mystic Valley Parkway.

Mei Mei Restaurant in Boston's Fenway Area Helping Provide Groceries for Immigrant Families

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a number of people in the local restaurant industry to help those in need, and the person behind a Chinese-American restaurant in Boston's Fenway neighborhood is no exception.

According to an email, Mei Mei on Park Drive has partnered with La Comunidad to supply 200 frontline immigrant workers in Everett and their families with more than 7,000 pounds of essential groceries last week, with chef and owner Irene Li packing up donor-funded boxes of food each day for weekend deliveries. The boxes include produce, dried beans, rice, and masa, with the estimated cost of each box being between $35 and $40, and Mei Mei's partnership with La Comunidad, Inc. to fundraise at least $10,500 a week is helping not just families in need, but also helping provide paid work for the staff at Mei Mei while also providing revenue for the restaurant's vendors. (Li is also hoping to replicate this model with other restaurants and community organizations as well.)

This Saturday (May 16), volunteers will again be picking up the boxes from Mei Mei and delivering them to families, with the plan being for this to continue over the coming weeks as well. For more information, including how to donate, please go to this link from Mei Mei's blog (or contact the restaurant at hello@meimeiboston.com):

Night Shift Brewing Pulls Plug on Philadelphia Expansion

One of the biggest breweries in the region has canceled its plans to expand to another city, citing the precarious position the expansion would cause right now as the coronavirus crisis continues.

According to WBZ 1030, Night Shift Brewing has pulled the plug on its planned expansion to Philadelphia, with a letter from the business saying that "The COVID-19 pandemic shook our business to the core....We're lucky that we're still in operation and able to see ourselves coming out of this crisis intact. But pushing forward on our Philly project has become too dangerous, threatening a potential collapse of NSB if we don't pull the plug now." Co-founders Rob Burns, Mike O'Mara, and Michael Oxton do leave the door open to revisiting a possible expansion to Philadelphia at some point; the shelved expansion plans had been in the works for more than four years, according to the letter.

Night Shift Brewing has locations in Everett and Boston's Lovejoy Wharf Area, though the latter is temporarily closed.

Kin Tap Room Plans to Open in Everett

It looks like Everett's Fermentation District could soon become home to a family-friendly "indoor backyard and tap room" if all goes as planned.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Kin Tap Room is looking to open on Norman Street in a facility that is currently home to Revolution Axe Throwing and Sky Zone Trampoline Park (behind Night Shift Brewing). The website for the business and the Eater article indicate that it would be a space for both adults and children, with offerings including lawn games, a bar area with beer, wine, and cider as well as coffee, space for children's activities, and possibly space for events and classes. It does not appear that food would be served at Kin Tap Room, but patrons would be able to bring their own, and it would be an indoor facility that would be open year round. If all goes well, the new spot could be open within the first half of 2020, according to Eater.

The Fermentation District includes alcohol-related businesses such as Night Shift, Bone Up Brewing Co., Down the Road Beer Co., and Short Path Distillery, while a dining and drinking spot called Village Bar & Grill also resides in the heart of the area.

The people behind a local brewery have expanded into the food truck business.

According to a tweet, Night Shift Brewing has debuted a truck called Night Shift Eats, which has a soft launch today outside its taproom in Everett. A web page for the food truck shows that it will also be coming to the Owl’s Nest beer garden at the Esplanade in Boston, and a note hints that the truck will be popping up elsewhere, saying that "This is just the beginning, who knows where we might pop-up next!"

The menu for Night Shift Eats includes such items as poutine, chorizo, shrimp tacos, burgers, tostones, wings, and more.

In addition to its brewery and taproom in Everett and its beer garden at the Esplanade, Night Shift also has a facility at Lovejoy Wharf in Boston and another Owl's Nest beer garden along the Charles River in Allston. The website for the business can be found at https://nightshiftfamily.com/

BearMoose Brewing Company, Deep Cuts Deli Have Parted Ways

It looks like a deli that was located inside a brand new brewery has said farewell just a few days after the official opening of the facility.

According to a tweet from @TBootsBrewing, Deep Cuts Deli has left the BearMoose Brewing Company space in Everett, with a Facebook post from the brewery from over the weekend confirming this, saying that "Unfortunately, Deep Cuts Deli will no longer be located inside BearMoose Brewing Company. We are working on providing you with other food options to enjoy with [your] BearMoose brew. In the meantime, feel free to bring your own food, or order in!" In addition, a Facebook post from Deep Cuts Deli this past weekend said, "We're cookin' up our next new adventure and we can't wait to tell you what it is. Thanks to BearMoose Brewing Company for letting us be part of your launch." It is not yet known what may have resulted in the two businesses parting ways; we have reached out to both and will post any updates that come in.

BearMoose Brewing Company officially opened on July 4, with the initial plan being for Deep Cuts Deli to offer snacks, sandwiches, and coffee to customers coming in to try beers in the taproom.

BearMoose Brewing Company can be found at 1934 Revere Beach Parkway in Everett.

Night Shift Brewing to Open Brewery and Taproom at Lovejoy Wharf in Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a local brewer is expanding to a second location, with this one apparently coming to the heart of Boston.

According to a source within the restaurant industry, Night Shift Brewing in Everett is looking to open a new facility somewhere downtown, with a Twitter post from @BrewboundFurn seeming to confirm this, showing this information in what appears to be part of a timeline displayed at last night's Nite Lite launch party at The Sinclair in Cambridge. The info says that the brewer has indeed signed a lease for a second brewery and taproom in downtown Boston, though no address or opening date has been given as of yet. (Stay tuned for more details as they come in.)

Night Shift debuted on Charlton Street in Everett in 2012, moving to its present location on Santilli Highway two years later. The brewer is known for such beers as Whirlpool, Santilli, and The 87 along with One Hop This Time, Morph, and the brand new Nite Lite, which makes its first appearance this week.

The website for Night Shift can be found at https://www.nightshiftbrewing.com/

[April 20 update: Boston Magazine states that the new brewery and taproom from Night Shift will actually be a bit north of downtown Boston, at Lovejoy Wharf near North Station and the North End.]

[May 3 update: Eater Boston mentions that the Boston location of Night Shift will have 12,000 square feet of space, seating for more than 300, an outdoor patio during the warmer months, and a taproom, cafe  (with its own coffee program), and retail space in addition to the brewery itself.]

[October 16 update: A tweet from the place indicates that Night Shift has now broken ground on its new space at Lovejoy Wharf and that the taproom, kitchen, cafe, and brewery all plan to open sometime in 2019.]

[March 8, 2019 update: Eater Boston says that Night Shift's new Lovejoy Wharf location opens on March 20 and that it will also the Night Shift Roasting coffee bar.]

[March 18, 2019 update: An update from Boston Magazine says that Night Shift has soft-opened today for coffee and retail sales, only; the place will also soft-open tomorrow, with its official opening still taking place on Wednesday, March 20.]

Revolution Axe Throwing Plans to Open in Everett

by Marc Hurwitz

Yesterday we reported that an axe-throwing facility complete with alcohol was being planned for Somerville. Now we have learned that this might not be the only place of its kind in the Boston area.

Eater Boston is reporting that Revolution Axe Throwing is looking to open in Everett, moving into an old warehouse on Norman Street in the city's "Fermentation District." The post says that the team behind the upcoming business will not be offering food initially, but they are seeking a beer and wine license--and there is also the possibility of collaborations with two nearby breweries (Bone Up, Night Shift) and a distillery (Short Path). If all goes well, Revolution Axe Throwing could be opening sometime in April, according to Eater.

As reported earlier, a Philadelphia-based group of axe-throwing facilities called Urban Axes will be coming to Somerville's Union Square as early as this summer, and that spot could include a full bar.

The address for the proposed Revolution Axe Throwing is 69 Norman Street, Everett, MA, 02149. Its website will be at http://www.revolutionaxe.com/

[June 13, 2019 update: Eater Boston states that Revolution Axe Throwing plans to open in Everett on June 26.]

Richie's Slush in Everett Closed for Renovations; Exact Status Unknown

A couple of years ago, we reported that a legendary slush shop that has been in business for a long time had closed its doors only to reopen based on support from its customers. Now we have learned that it has closed again, and it is not known what the exact status of the place is at this point in time.

According to a Twitter post, Richie's Slush in Everett is "boarded up" and apparently work permits on the door, with a phone call placed to the Revere Beach Parkway shop going to voicemail that says it is closed for renovations and will be reopening. A check on the "find us" page within the Richie's website features the corporate office on nearby Garvey Street but does not feature the shop, though the shop is still included on the general map of where the slush can be found in the area.

In May of 2015, Richie's Slush shut down on Revere Beach Parkway with the place saying that "[Due] to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, Richie's Store on the Parkway will not be opening this season. We apologize for this and hope you will purchase Richie's Italian Ice Products from one of our many other fine locations and retailers." The store quickly reopened, however, with the place saying that "Because of hard work and an overwhelming support from our customers," the shop would reopen.

As soon as we find out more about the status of the shop, we will post an update here.

Richie's Slush first started out in 1956.

The address for this slush shop in Everett is: Richie's Slush, 2084 Revere Beach Parkway, Everett, MA, 02149. Its website is at http://www.richiesslush.com/

Down the Road Beer Co. to Open Taproom in Everett

A contract brewery is taking over a facility just north of Boston, and the space will include a tasting room.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Down the Road Beer Co. is moving into a space in Everett, with the 12,000-square foot facility including room for brewing and canning, along with a dedicated taproom and retail area. Last year, the company brewed out of the Ipswich Ale Brewery facility and then moved to BrewMaster's Tavern in Williamsburg (a short distance west of Northampton in the foothills of the Berkshires), and while Down the Road will indeed be brewing out of its upcoming Everett space, it will continue to do contract brewing as well, moving only a part of its production to the new building.

If all goes as planned, Down the Road could be opening its tasting room in the spring of 2017, according to Boston Magazine.

The website for Down the Road Beer Co. can be found at http://downtheroadbrewery.com/

[March 10, 2017 update: Eater Boston mentions (via the Everettt Independent) that Down the Road hopes to open its taproom sometime in April and that it will have seating for 200.]

[October 20 update: A new article from Boston Magazine states that the Down the Road taproom debuts on Friday, November 3, and it will include a "full-blown pinball arcade" along with a couple of snack options, while the plans is for food trucks to be set up outside in their parking lot.]

Bone Up Brewing Company in Everett Now Brewing Beer; Taproom Coming Soon

Back in 2014, we reported that a brewery was on its way to one of Boston's northern neighbors, and now we have learned that they are currently in the process of being up and running.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Bone Up Brewing Company has started brewing beer and is planning to have its brews available in restaurants and bars over the next week or two if the initial batches meet their "Quality Standards," according to a blog post from the brewery. The post says that the taproom is not yet ready and that a public opening depends on how work progresses on the facility and when the building department might give its approval. The blog says that the first beers available will be Honey & Hops, which is an IPA, and Bone Smasher, which is a session IPA.

Bone Up Brewing Company is one of several breweries to open just north of Boston, with others including Night Shift Brewing and Down the Road Brewery in Everett, Mystic Brewery in Chelsea, and Idle Hands, which is in the process of moving from Everett to Malden.

The address for Bone Up Brewing Company is 38 Norman Street, Everett, MA, 02149. Its website can be found at http://www.boneup.beer/

[June 24 update: Boston Magazine reports that Bone Up Brewing Company has debuted its beers, with Honey & Hops IPA being available at Foundry on Elm and The Independent in Somerville and Maverick Marketplace Cafe in East Boston; Bone Smasher session IPA being at Foundry on Elm along with Woods Hill Table in Concord and Mystic Station in Malden; and Black Witow dark wheat ale being offered at Maverick Marketplace Cafe.]

A First Look at Short Path Distillery in Everett [Photos]

A brand new distillery has just opened in Everett, and we had the chance to look at the place over the weekend.

As reported earlier, Short Path Distillery opened its doors in Everett on Saturday, June 27, with the Kelvin Street spot featuring gin and rum that are made by "combining old-world distilling techniques with a new-world, chemistry-based approach to spirit development." The distillery is located in an old rubber factory just west of Main Street and just north of the Revere Beach Parkway, with one room including a bar area for tasting along with a few tables, and the other room being the manufacturing area where the spirits are made. We took a tour over the weekend and participated in some tastings, and also got to see the equipment used and how the gin and rum are made. A few pictures of the place can be seen below. (For those interesting in visiting Short Path, it is located at 71 Kelvin Street, with its website being at http://shortpathdistillery.com/).
