First Watch Is Opening in Hanover

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a Florida-based chain of breakfast and lunch spots was planning to expand to the local area with a location coming to Boston, and now we have learned that this will be its second location in the region as another one gets ready to open on the South Shore.

According to a press release, First Watch opens in Hanover on January 20, moving into a space at Hanover Crossing on Route 53 just south of the Route 3 intersection. Once it opens, expect to find such options as biscuits and gravy with turkey sausage, egg sandwiches, breakfast tacos, eggs benedict, salads, power wraps, and sandwiches, and it will be joined by another one coming to Boylston Street in the Back Bay at some point.

The address for the Hanover location of First Watch is 1775 Washington Street (Suite 762), Hanover, MA, 02339. The website for First Watch, which is headquartered in Bradenton, is at https://firstwatch.com/

Scutari Plans Is Opening in the Former Flanders Field Space in Hanover

A local restaurateur is looking to open not one, but two locations of a new concept.

According to a source (via a Patriot Ledger article), Leo Keka, who runs Alba in Quincy and Hanover, is planning to open Scutari in Hanover, taking over the space on Route 53 where Flanders Field had been. It appears that this will be the first of two locations of the Northern Italian restaurant to open, as another in Braintree (which was mentioned here last summer) may not be opening in the former Dunkin' Donuts University space on Granite Street until late August or early September while the Hanover location could be opening May 15.

Flanders Field first opened in the latter part of 2020, offering dishes with Northern European influences along with an extensive beer list; it apparently closed sometime late last summer or early in the fall, though an official announcement was never made.

The address for Scutari in Hanover is 2055 Washington Street (Merchants Row Shopping Center), Hanover, MA, 02339.

[July 31 update: According to its social media, Scutari is now open in Hanover.]

Flanders Field in Hanover Is Closed; Exact Status of Place Unknown

A South Shore restaurant known in part for its food with Northern European influences and its extensive beer list is shuttered, and it is not know what the future holds for the spot.

Based on a few checks on the place over the past several weeks along with messages sent from multiple sources, Flanders Field appears to be closed, with calls to the Washington Street spot indicating that its phone is out of service. There is no indication of its closure on its website or its social media, and the home page of its site simply mentions that it was closed on September 3 and would reopen on September 5.

Flanders Field first opened in the latter part of 2020, offering such dishes as Belgian frites, soft pretzels, pierogi, steamed mussels, pork schnitzel, bratwurst, and meatloaf, while also serving a variety of beers including from the local area and overseas. The founder of this blog wrote about the place for NECN last year, which can be read at the link below:

Sage and Salt May Be Opening in the Former Squires Space in Hanover

A new restaurant may be on its way to the South Shore, and it would be taking over the space where another dining and drinking spot had been for more than 30 years until shutting down in 2020.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Sage and Salt is planning to open in Hanover, moving into the former Squires space on Route 53. A post from Dave Delaney of Dave Delaney's Columbia car care center (which is also on Route 53) mentions that the town's Select Board has given approval of the upcoming spot and says that there may be an ownership connection to Sorelle in Abington. Little other information has been given on the restaurant other than the fact that it could open in several months once renovations are complete, so keep checking back for updates.

The Squires was a roadhouse-style spot that was a local favorite over the years for such items as burgers, pizza, macaroni and cheese, steak tips, and wings.

The address for the upcoming Sage and Salt is 1202 Washington Street (Route 53), Hanover, MA, 02339.

A menu sent to us includes such familiar options as burgers, hot dogs, fish and chips, fried clams, and lobster rolls, and South Shore bar pizza is a new item that has been added to the menu, while a variety of local beers are available, as well as wine and cocktails.

Sullivan's first opened at Castle Island in 1951, with another outlet opening at Hub Hall by North Station in Boston in 2021. The website for Sullivan's is at https://www.sullivanscastleisland.com/

Sullivan's at Castle Island in South Boston to Expand, Opening a Restaurant and Bar in Hanover

One of Boston's best-known seaside dining spots is expanding, with a new location slated for the South Shore that will have a much different setup from the original.

According to a source, Sullivan's at Castle Island in South Boston is planning to open an outlet at Hanover Crossing, a new mixed-use development on Route 53 in Hanover that had been the site of the Hanover Mall. A Patriot Ledger article mentions that the 6,000-square-foot restaurant will include a bar area and an outdoor patio, with owner Brendan Sullivan saying in a post at nerej.com that "We are thrilled to be able to work with [PREP Property Group] to extend our family-run restaurant to Hanover Crossing which will include for the first time a bar and sit-down dining."

Sullivan's first opened at Castle Island in 1951, offering such items as hot dogs, fried clams, lobster rolls, burgers, chicken sandwiches, soft serve, and more. (Another location can be found at Hub Hall by North Station in Boston.)

The Eating Establishment in Hanover Has Closed

A decades-old South Shore diner that shared its space with a now-closed general store is now closed as well.

According to an article from The Patriot Ledger, The Eating Establishment in Hanover is no longer in business, saying that it shuttered on Christmas Eve in advance of its lease with the 7-Eleven corporation--which owns the Washington Street building--running out at the end of the year. The post says that according to Easting Establishment owner Stephen Matheny, the eatery was struggling greatly due to the pandemic and the state restrictions that recently reduced the maximum capacity to 25 percent until at least January 10, while there was also no room for outdoor seating in its parking lot--and a request for a reduction in the rent didn't go anywhere. (The place has been takeout only since the coronavirus took hold.) Matheny still holds out hope that he could reopen the restaurant if the building--which is on the historic registry--is sold again (there has apparently been talk of this) and he gets a reduction on the rent until the indoor dining area could fully open.

The Eating Establishment resided in the same building as the Assinippi General Store, which shut down in November.

The address for The Eating Establishment is 2103 Washington Street, Hanover, MA, 02339.

A South Shore restaurant and bar is closed for at least awhile after being damaged in a fire that occurred above its space.

Charlie Sarkis' Last Two Massachusetts Restaurants to Close

The person behind a number of Massachusetts restaurants is getting ready to close his final two eateries in the state.

The Patriot Ledger is reporting that Charlie Sarkis of the Sarkis Restaurant Group (which had previously been called the Back Bay Restaurant Group) will close Joe's American Bar and Grill and Papa Razzi in Hanover sometime in December, leaving his group with only two remaining eateries--a Joe's and a Papa Razzi in Short Hills, NJ. Sarkis founded such restaurants as Joe's, Papa Razzi, Abe & Louie's, Charley's, Atlantic Fish Company, J.C. Hillary's, and others, but most of these spots have either closed or been sold, with the Tavistock Group and Newport Harbor Corp. purchasing a number of the restaurant locations from the Back Bay Restaurant Group over the past couple of years. [Ed note: Locations of Joe's and Papa Razzi in Massachusetts that are owned by the Tavistock Group will remain open, along with Abe & Louie's, Atlantic Fish, and Coach Grill.]

[October 17 update: An update to the Patriot Ledger article indicates that Joe's American Bar and Grill and Papa Razzi in Hanover will actually be closing this Saturday (October 19) rather than in December, as had been previously mentioned.]

The Back Bay Restaurant Group first started out in the 1960s.

The address for Joe's American Bar and Grill and Papa Razzi in Hanover is 2087 Washington Street, Hanover, MA, 02339.
