Pinkberry at Boston's South Station Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

An Arizona-based chain of frozen yogurt shops continues to disappear from the local landscape, this time closing an outlet that was frequented mainly by commuters.

According to a post from Eater Boston, Pinkberry at South Station is no longer in operation, with the kiosk being cleared out and the place being taken down from the locations section of the Pinkberry website. This is the second location of Pinkberry to close over the past several weeks, as its shop at the Prudential Center shuttered last month; the only locations now remaining in the Greater Boston area are at Boston University, Logan Airport, and in Braintree.

The website for Pinkberry can be found at http://www.pinkberry.com/

Crepe & More Is Opening Inside Boston's South Station

by Marc Hurwitz

A new crepe place is on its way to Boston, and it will be catering mainly to commuters.

Eater Boston is reporting (via a licensing board page) that Crepe & More is planning to open at a kiosk inside South Station, with the hearing notice indicating that Lea Sasportes of Amorino in the Back Bay (and eventually, Cambridge's Harvard Square) is behind the business. According to Eater, the upcoming spot will feature sweet and savory crepes along with other desserts and specialty drinks, and while it will not have its own seating, customers can opt for public seating within the building itself.

Amorino is a Paris-based chain of artisan gelato shops that first opened on Newbury Street in March of 2015; an earlier article in Boston Magazine mentioned that the Boston location will apparently be "the first of [Sasportes's] many owned and operated franchises around the country."

[January 26, 2018 update: According to a source, Crepe & More is now open inside South Station.]

Cheeseboy Closes Its South Station Location

A group of restaurants that features grilled cheese sandwiches has closed one of its Boston locations.

According to a poster on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the South Station location of Cheeseboy is gone, with a Facebook post from the place confirming that it has indeed shut down. It appears that the remaining locations of the eatery in Downtown Crossing, at the Natick Mall, and at the service areas in Darien (2) and Milford, CT are still in business.

Cheeseboy first opened at South Station in October of 2010, joining the original location in Milford; in addition to the South Station shop closing, the group of eateries has also closed a few other locations over the past few years as well, including in Braintree, the Prudential Center in Boston's Back Bay, Providence, and West Nyack, NY.

Cosi in Boston's South Station Has Closed

It looks like a troubled Boston-based chain of dining spots continues to scale back, as it has shut down another one of its locations.

A check on its website indicates that the South Station outlet of Cosi is no longer in business, as its page has been deleted and it is no longer listed in the locations section of the site. (A Yelp post seems to confirm this as well.) This comes a few weeks after the chain closed its Back Bay location--and subsequently filed for bankruptcy, had its stock delisted, and put its assets up for sale.

Locations of Cosi on Federal Street, High Street, Milk Street, and State Street in downtown Boston--along with the Seaport District, Logan Airport (2), and Cambridge's Kendall Square remain in operation for now.

Delectable Desires Pastries in West Roxbury Is Opening a Kiosk at Boston's South Station

The person behind a bakery-cafe that developed from a home-based cake business then a wholesale business is planning to open a second retail location, and this one would be popular with travelers.

According to a licensing board page within the city of Boston website, Delectable Desires Pastries in West Roxbury is looking to open at Boston's South Station, with the new location being a kiosk within the food court. The listing says that the shop, which would have no seats (though there is shared seating just outside of the food court), would be open Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If approved, the Delectable Desires Pastries kiosk would presumably offer pastries and cookies--and possibly cake slices and pie slices--based on the offerings at the Centre Street store.

Owner Carlene O'Garro started out in the cake business in 2007, eventually wholesaling her products to cafes and markets across the region; her shop in West Roxbury opened in early 2015.

The website for Delectable Desires Pastries can be found at http://delectabledesires.net/

[October 10 update: A source tells us via Twitter that Delectable Desires Pastries is now open at South Station, and this has been confirmed by a Facebook post from the business.]

Nantucket's Oath Craft Pizza Is Opening at South Station in Boston

It looks like the people behind a pizza spot on Nantucket Island will be opening a second location, and it will be located in one of the busiest parts of Boston.

According to a Twitter post from Boston Herald writer @DGoodison, Oath Craft Pizza is planning to open at South Station, with the eatery's social media pages confirming this. Based on the menu at their original location on Straight Wharf, expect to see an eclectic mix of pizzas including possible options such as jalapeno relish, sriracha chicken, pulled pork, cotija cheese, cilantro garlic sauce, roasted potatoes, Canadian bacon, and pickled red onion. (Salads and desserts could be offered as well.)

If all goes as planned, Oath Craft Pizza could be opening at South Station by the end of the summer, according to a Twitter post from the place.

[August 11 update: Eater Boston says that the new Oath Craft Pizza will be located in a former information kiosk next to Auntie Anne's, and that they will use a solar-powered electric oven that does not give off any smoke and needs no ventilation at all.]

[October 22 update: The Boston Business Journal states that Oath Craft Pizza opens at South Station on Monday, October 26, and that CEO John Burns says it may just be the world's smallest pizzeria, with only 165 square feet of space. The article also mentions that there could be a total of eight to ten locations of Oath in and around the Boston area by the end of next year.]

Tavern in the Square Group Involved in Opening of Tavitas at South Station in Boston

It looks like the group behind a local chain of dining and drinking spots is going to be involved in the opening of a Mexican restaurant in the heart of Boston--and it should be popular with commuters.

According to an article from Eater Boston, a new spot called Tavitas is seeking the liquor licence from the now-closed Brighton Beer Garden, with the proposed eatery apparently looking to open somewhere within South Station. A web search gave a bit more information about the place, including the finding of a website for the restaurant saying it will be a "Mexican joint" that is coming this spring. The site also confirms what EB mentioned, that Tavern in the Square is involved with the opening of the dining spot (Tavern in the Square has an outlet at South Station, by the way).

Currently, locations of Tavern in the Square can be found in Boston's North Station and South Station as well as in Cambridge's Central Square and Porter Square, Allston, Burlington, Northborough, and Salem. (The people behind the restaurants also run Union Street in Newton Centre.)

[June 22 update: According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Tavitas is now hiring--and its job post is rather interesting; the post says that it will be a "Bad Ass Mexican restaurant inspired by the flavors, sounds and culture of East LA...with food made with authentic ingredients and bold flavors that will punch you in the mouth." A new article from Eater Boston indicates that the South Station eatery could be opening sometime this summer.]

[July 31 update: The Boston Business Journal states that Tavitas (which it describes as an "in your face" dining spot) plans to open sometime in mid-August; the article also says that Tavern in the Square owner Stephen DeSousa is one of the people behind it, along with Joey Arcari and Renato Valentin.]

[August 17 update: UrbanDaddy says that Tavitas opens a week from today (Monday, August 24).]

The website for Tavitas will be at http://www.tavitas.com/

Carvel Ice Cream Is Opening at South Station in Boston

Three years ago, we reported that a chain of ice cream shops was going to be returning to the Boston area, and now we have learned that its first location will be coming to the heart of the city this week.

Eater Boston is reporting that Carvel opens at South Station this Thursday (June 12), with this being the start of an expansion that will include both full-sized and express locations in the Boston area and elsewhere in the state. The South Station location of Carvel is being run by the franchise owner of the Auntie Anne's shop at South Station, with the ice cream shop being integrated within the pretzel place, according to a release on the Business Wire site.

Atlanta-based Carvel, which first started out in 1934, used to have a handful of locations in the local area, including in Brockton, Malden, and Woburn. Currently, the only places in Massachusetts that serve Carvel ice cream are locations of Moe's Southwest Grill in Waltham and Shrewsbury, based on information from the Carvel site. (The website for the ice cream chain is at http://www.carvel.com/)

Po Boy in Newton to Debut a Food Truck

Yet another new food truck is coming to the Boston area, and this one will focus on a dish that is popular down south.

According to a post in The Boston Globe, owner Eric Cormier of Po Boy in Newton is planning to debut a food truck by June, with the truck offering chicken, catfish, shrimp, and oyster po boys. The article mentions that the truck could be located in the South Station area, though it is not known if this is definite yet, nor is it known whether the truck will also be at other locations in and around the city of Boston. (Keep checking back for updates.)

[July 14 update: An email from UrbanDaddy last Thursday said that the Po Boy food truck was expected to roll out "this week" (or last week, since it was sent last Thursday). It does not appear that the truck is up and running just yet, but based on the email, it should be any day now.]

Po Boy first opened on Crafts Street in the Newtonville section of Newton in the latter part of 2012, taking over the space where Eugene's Coffee & Hot Dogs and the Crafts Street Cafe had both been.

The address for Po Boy is 67 Crafts Street, Newton, MA, 02458.

Tavern in the Square Is Opening at South Station in Boston

Earlier this year, we reported that a local chain of dining and drinking spots was looking to open two more locations. Since then, it has been announced that one would be west of Boston, and now we have learned that the other location could be in the heart of the city.

According to a follower of the hiddenboston Twitter page, an alcohol license is apparently being transferred to Tavern in the Square for a location in South Station. A web search shows Bizapedia as mentioning that the restaurant and bar may indeed be opening there, making this their other new location (Tavern in the Square is also opening in Northborough). No confirmation on the South Station outlet has been made as of yet, so keep checking back for updates.

[July 16 update: Universal Hub mentions that Tavern in the Square is indeed looking to open at South Station, and it will be meeting with the Boston Licensing Board on July 31 to seek permission for a liquor license.]

[July 18 update: The Boston Business Journal states that the new Tavern in the Square will be only 780 square feet in size and plans to be more like an "airport-style bar," with a limited version of their regular menu and seating for 38.]

[August 13 update: A new job post on the Craigslist site says that South Station's Tavern in the Square is "preparing to open," with the free-standing spot being even smaller than originally thought (700 square feet) and offering more than 30 different draft beers, along with a full liquor menu.]

[February 3, 2014 update: A note from the restaurant indicates that the new Tavern in the Square at South Station is now open.]

Tavern in the Square can currently be found in Cambridge's Central Square and Porter Square as well as Allston, Burlington, and Salem. (The folks behind the restaurants also run Union Street in Newton Centre.) The website is at http://www.taverninthesquare.com/

Clarke's at South Station in Boston Has Closed

It looks like a restaurant and bar in Boston's South Station has closed its doors after being in business for approximately 20 years.

An email sent to us by one of our readers (Colleen B) indicates that Clarke's at South Station shuttered after business hours yesterday, with multiple phone calls to the place apparently confirming this (the calls went unanswered). Based on an earlier article from the Boston Business Journal, a new CVS may be moving into the Clarke's space, with Clarke's possibly hoping to move into another space within the building. The older BBJ article also says that the restaurant's lease was to expire at the end of the year, which seems to further confirm their closing this week.

[January 9, 2013 update: Eater Boston is reporting that the now-closed Clarke's at South Station will not be relocating, so it appears to be gone for good.]

The address for this now-closed dining and drinking spot was: Clarke's at South Station, 720 Atlantic Avenue, Boston, MA, 02111.
