Potbelly Sandwich Shop Chain Faces An Uncertain Future

A Chicago-based chain of sandwich shops that has a handful of locations in the Greater Boston area appears to be in a fight for survival now.

According to an article in Restaurant Business, Potbelly is talking about closing as many as 100 shops permanently, and also told investors in its quarterly report that it may actually have to shut down completely at some point. The chain mentions in the filing that due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, "The probable inability of the Company to meet its current covenant requirements raises substantial doubt on the Company's ability to meet its obligations within one year from the financial statement issuance date and to continue as a going concern." The Potbelly Sandwich Shop chain had been in the news last month as well, as it returned a $10 million forgivable loan that it had been granted via the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) part of the CARES Act, saying at the time that "We were surprised and disappointed when the fund was quickly exhausted, leaving many without help."

Locations of Potbelly Sandwich Shop can be found in downtown Boston (two), Burlington, and Braintree.

Potbelly Returning $10 Million Loan Granted Through the CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)

A Chicago-based chain of sandwich places is returning the money granted them as part of a government stimulus package designed to help small businesses, joining several other chains that have done the same over the past week or so.

According to a source, Potbelly Sandwich Shop has decided to return its $10 million forgivable loan granted via the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) part of the CARES Act. An article from BuzzFeed News mentions this while also showing a Tweet thread from the chain saying the following:

Potbelly's sales dropped dramatically when COVID-19 hit, forcing us to furlough employees, close shops, and significantly cut salaries at all levels of the organization. In order to financially support our in-shop employees, and based on SBA guidelines we applied and qualified for assistance under the Payroll Protection Program. We were surprised and disappointed when the fund was quickly exhausted, leaving many without help. We are returning the PPP loan after further clarification from the Treasury Department. We will continue to seek alternatives to help support our employees and enable them to return to work so they can serve our loyal customers.

Potbelly's decision to return the money comes on the heels of such chains as Ruth's Chris Steak House, Sweetgreen, Shake Shack, and Kura Sushi returning their loans as well. (The PPP was set up to help small businesses maintain their payrolls.)

A Texas-based chain of sandwich shops may be opening its third Boston-area location, with this one being its first within the city itself.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Which Wich is looking to open on Newbury Street in the Back Bay, with the address indicating that it would be located near the corner of Hereford Street. The post mentions that the Board of Appeals has approved of the plans to open the new shop, though the Boston Licensing Board will still need to give its approval as well. If it gets the green light and does open, the new location of Which Wich would join others at Somerville's Assembly Row and University Station in Westwood.

Jimmy John's in Boston's Fenway/Audubon Circle Neighborhood Has Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like yet another Boston-area location of an Illinois-based chain of sandwich shops has closed, and only a few now remain in the region.

According to a source, Jimmy John's in the Fenway/Audubon Circle section of the city is no longer in operation, with the windows being papered over. A check on the chain's website seems to confirm this, as the Park Drive location is no longer on the locations page. This is one of a number of shops that have closed of late in and around Boston, including locations in Allston/Brighton, Newton, Salem, Watertown, Quincy, and Braintree, all of which are gone. Outlets in Boston's Theatre District, North Station, South Boston, and Waltham appear to remain open, based on the website.

Jimmy John's first came to the Boston area in 2014 when it opened a shop on D Street in Southie; the chain got its start in Charleston, IL, in 1983.

The address for this now-closed sandwich shop in the Fenway/Audubon Circle area was: Jimmy John's, 512 Park Drive, Boston, MA, 02215. The website for the chain is at https://www.jimmyjohns.com/

Jimmy John's Locations in Quincy and Braintree Have Closed

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a couple of Boston-area locations of an Illinois-based chain of sandwich shops have shut down.

According to posters on the Quincy Is Everything Facebook group page, Jimmy John's on Hancock Street in Quincy Center is no longer in business, while a poster on the South Braintree/Highlands Civic Community Facebook group has confirmed what someone told us on Twitter today, that the shop on Washington Street in South Braintree Square is shuttered as well. No reason has been given for the two closures as of yet, and while it appears that other locations of Jimmy John's in Boston, Lowell, Northborough, Waltham, and Worcester remain in operation (based on the chain's location page), we will post an update here if this changes

Jimmy John's first came to the local area in 2014 when it opened a shop on D Street in South Boston; the chain was got its start in Charleston, IL, in 1983.

Cosi in Cambridge's Kendall Square Has Closed

Yet another location of a troubled local chain of dining spots has closed.

According to a Twitter post from @Dipsys_pal, Cosi in the Kendall Square section of Cambridge is no longer in operation, with the tweet saying "Lost their lease. Looks like MIT is emptying the storefronts along Main St." A check on Cosi's website shows that the Kendall/MIT location has indeed been taken down, which confirms that the shop is the third to close in the Boston area over the past several weeks. (The South Station and Back Bay stores have also shut down.)

It has been a difficult stretch of late for Cosi, as the chain filed for bankruptcy in late September, had its stock delisted last month, and could be going to auction sometime this month. Locations of Cosi continue to operate on Federal Street, High Street, Milk Street, and State Street in downtown Boston, and at the Seaport District and Logan Airport.
