Squinny's Pizza Is Opening in Plymouth; Will Include Equipment from Al's and Ernie's

by Marc Hurwitz

A new pizzeria is opening south of Boston and its equipment is coming from two beloved spots that are no longer in business.

Wicked Local is reporting that Squinny's Pizza is going to open in the former front office of Quintal Bros. Produce in Plymouth, with owner Dicky Quintal installing equipment from both Al's and Ernie's including the iconic "chicken machine" from the former. The article says that the Scobee Circle spot will also have Al's pizza oven and Ernie's decades-old dough mixer among other items, and that Ernie's pizza chef (Johnny Lombardi) and head chef (Stephen Moore) will be working at the place. Once it opens, Squinny's will offer pizza--which will apparently be somewhat similar to Ernie's--along with soups, salads, and subs, and it is slated to be open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.

The chicken machine from Al's has a chicken that starts clucking, spinning around, and laying an egg with a prize inside for those who insert money into the machine.

The address for this new pizzeria in Plymouth is: Squinny's Pizza, 11 Scobee Circle, Plymouth, MA, 02360.

[December 24 update: A Facebook post indicates that Squinny's Pizza is now open.]

After Being Gutted by Fire, Beauty's Pizza in Cambridge Moving to Former Pizza Pie-er Space

photo of James's Gate, Jamaica Plain, MAA pizza spot in Cambridge that was destroyed in a fire a year and a half ago is returning, and it will move into the space where another pizzeria had been.

According to a license commission page, Beauty's Pizza is seeking a license to operate on Hampshire Street, with the address indicating that it would take over the space where Pizza Pie-er was until last spring before closing--and apparently attempting to change its name to A+ Pizza & Grill (it is not known if that name was ever used). Beauty's had been located on Broadway in the same building as MuLan Taiwanese Cuisine, but both restaurants were gutted in a fire in December of 2014; MuLan had been hoping to reopen in its space this spring, but it has not opened as of yet.

Pizza Pie-er also had a location in South Boston, but that one shut down around the same time as the Cambridge shop. (Its Providence location remains open.)

The address for the new location of Beauty's Pizza is 187 Hampshire Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Its website is at http://www.beautys-pizza.com/

[August 26 update: A comment posted here from the person behind Beauty's Pizza indicates that the place hopes to open in its new home within the next month.]

[September 14 update: According to the restaurant, Beauty's Pizza is now open in its new location on Hampshire Street.]

Stoked Wood Fired Pizza Is Opening in Brookline's Washington Square in April

A highly-anticipated pizza spot is getting close to opening in Brookline.

According to a job post within the bostonchefs.com site, Stoked Wood Fired Pizza Co. hopes to open in Washington Square on April 1, with job training starting in the middle of March. As reported earlier, the brick-and-mortar location of the pizza truck is taking over the space on Beacon Street where Sunny Boy had been until closing around the beginning of this year, with Scott Riebling of the Boston rock band Letters to Cleo and Toirm Miller of the former Jack and the Bean Bowl food cart being behind it.

[April 8 update: Stoked did not open on April 1 after all, though a source says that it is less than a week away from opening.]

[April 12 update: According to an Instagram post from Privateer Rum, Stoked plans to open on Thursday, with sources saying that it will offer craft beer, wine, and cocktails in addition to pizza.]

The Stoked pizza truck, which debuted in early 2014, has received much praise for its pies, including Boston Magazine awarding it a "best of" for 2015.

The website for Stoked can be found at http://www.stokedpizzaco.com/

A4 at Troy Planning to Open in Boston's South End

It looks like a highly-rated pizza bar in Somerville is expanding to a particularly hot section of Boston.

According to a couple of sources, A4 Pizza is looking to open a new spot called A4 at Troy within the apartment building Troy Boston, which is located on Traveler Street in the South End by the Ink Block complex. The source says that an email about the new dining spot went out to residents of the building this week, though no specific opening date has been announced as of yet, nor is it known how similar it will be to the Somerville Avenue location; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

The people behind Area Four in Cambridge's Kendall Square first opened A4 Pizza in August of 2013, with the place featuring wood-fired pizza along with a wide variety of beers and wines. Since it opened, A4 has received much praise in the press, with Boston Magazine recently awarding it the best crust in the Boston area.]

The address for Troy Boston (and the proposed A4 at Troy) is 55 Traveler Street, Boston, MA, 02118; the website for both Area Four and A4 can be found at http://areafour.com/
