Little Rose and Rosita to Open in Former Kamakura Space in Downtown Boston

A well-known local chef and restaurateur is opening a dining spot and bar in the heart of Boston, and it will be taking over the space where a Japanese restaurant had been.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Michael Serpa (Select Oyster Bar, Grand Tour) is planning to open Little Rose in the Kamakura space on State Street along the northern edge of the city's Financial District, with a rooftop bar called Rosita opening there as well. The post mentions that the setup for Little Rose will include a counter-service burrito spot at street level and a full-service dining room on the second level that offers such items as tacos and quesadillas, while the more "swank" Little Rose will be a tequila and mezcal bar set up within a seventh-floor rooftop space (accessed by an elevator) that offers ceviches and more from its snack-based menu. No specific opening date has been given as of yet for Little Rose and Rosita, but the hope is for it to open sometime in 2021.

Serpa is also working on another new restaurant called Atlantico, which will be a seafood spot in the former Southern Proper space on Harrison Avenue in the South End.

Update: Coppersmith in South Boston Is Closing in Late 2020; Life Sciences Complex to Move into Space

[Ed note: This article was updated on January 2, 2020 to reflect the fact that the restaurant will remain open quite a bit longer than originally thought.]

Earlier this year, it was reported that yet another South Boston restaurant was facing an uncertain future due to new development. Now we have learned that the dining spot will indeed be closing.

BostonTweet states (via a Boston Magazine article) that Coppersmith on West 3rd Street is going to be shutting down as it makes way for a life sciences development that may also replace other nearby industrial and manufacturing buildings that had once been owned by Gillette. A press release from general manager Sheila Senat confirms its closure while also saying that "Our community is so important to us and our customers deserve the best, so we will be hosting an exciting lineup of events until we ultimately say goodbye in January."

Coppersmith first opened in 2015, with the place including a cafe and a dining area, a rooftop bar, indoor food trucks, and more in an old warehouse space.

The address for Coppersmith is 40 West 3rd street, South Boston, MA, 02127. Its website is at http://www.coppersmithboston.com/

[January 2, 2020 update: Eater Boston mentions that Coppersmith is now planning to remain open until late in the year, with the restaurant saying that "We're thrilled with this outcome, and we feel so fortunate to be able to stay open for a lot longer than we initially thought was possible."]

Globe Bar & Cafe in Boston's Back Bay Has Closed

A restaurant and bar that was located in a space with one of the best-known roofdecks in Boston has shut down.

According to consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne, the Globe Bar & Cafe in the Back Bay is now closed, with Byrne and several other sources (including @mrovelli) indicating that it was an abrupt closure that took place over the weekend. This has since been confirmed by @HeyRatty, who showed us a note from the Boylston Street spot saying that its closure was "due to unseen circumstances."

The Globe Bar & Cafe first opened a bit less than 15 years ago on a section of Boylston Street in the Copley Square area, moving from there to the former Rattlesnake Bar & Grill space a short distance east in early 2018. The place was known in part for its New American and classic American fare along with its cocktails--and its aforementioned roofdeck.

The address for the Globe Bar & Cafe was 384 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Six / West at the Cambria Hotel Is Opening in South Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

Back in 2017, we reported that a rooftop spot and a lobby restaurant and lounge within a hotel was being planned for South Boston, and now we have a name for the place.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Six / West at the Cambria Hotel is opening by the W Broadway/Dorchester Avenue intersection and that it will include a bar and lounge on the roofdeck as well as a lounge in the lobby that will have "a speakeasy look with a library feel."

The website for the Cambria Hotel can be found at https://www.cambriaboston.com/

[October 15 update: Eater Boston states that the lobby section of Six / West at the Cambria Hotel opens this evening, though the rooftop will be opening at a later date.]

[November 18 update: Boston Magazine mentions that the rooftop section of Six / West debuted on Friday, and it will apparently continue to open up depending on the weather.]

Coppersmith in South Boston May Lose Its Home; Biotech Building Could Replace It

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like yet another South Boston restaurant may be facing an uncertain future due to new development.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Coppersmith on West 3rd Street could see its warehouse building demolished to make way for a life sciences building that would house biotech companies, with the plan being to tear down other structures at the site. The post mentions that plans for the project will be submitted by late March, and that the proposal will include a six-story 210,000-square-foot building that is 95 feet high and possibly having ground-floor retail space.

Coppersmith, which first opened in September of 2015, includes a cafe and a dining area, a rooftop bar, indoor food trucks, and more in an old industrial warehouse.

The address for Coppersmith is 40 West 3rd street, South Boston, MA, 02127. Its website can be found at http://www.coppersmithboston.com/

[March 25 update: The Boston Business Journal reports that more details have come out about the proposal to open a lab building where Coppersmith currently resides; the article says that Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc. and Anchor Line Partners are looking to replace Coppersmith's home along with multiple industrial and manufacturing buildings that had once been owned by Gillette with a 133-foot-high structure that would have ground floor retail and a "food-drink establishment," though it is not known if Coppersmith might be able (or willing) to take over that space. If all goes as planned, construction on the project could begin in 2020 and finish up by 2022.]

[April 29 update: A tweet from @FPNA_Boston indicates that a public meeting is taking place tonight that will look at the proposal of a life sciences building taking over the Coppersmith space.]

[October 23 update: According to a post from the Fort Point Boston site, a public meeting will take place this evening on a revised proposal to replace Coppersmith with a life sciences development.]

Igloos Return to The Lookout Bar in Boston's Seaport District

by Marc Hurwitz

A rooftop hotel bar in Boston's Seaport District is set up once again for the colder months, bringing back a rather unusual concept that had been in place for a short time earlier this year.

According to a web page from the spot, The Lookout at the Envoy Hotel has its "igloos" back in place from now until April of 2018, and as was the case over the past winter, they are heated and lit and with room for eight to ten people. The page says that blankets are provided for extra warmth, and that customers simply have to press a button which illuminates the igloo to get the attention of a server. A total of six igloos are set up at The Lookout, with hours being 4:00 PM through 10:00 PM Wednesday through Sunday on a first-come, first-served basis.

The page mentions that only drinks are offered in the igloos at this point in time, but that The Outlook downstairs offers food to patrons.

The address for The Lookout (along with The Outlook and the Envoy Hotel) is 70 Sleeper Street, Boston, MA, 02210.

[April 13, 2018 update: Eater Boston states that this is the last weekend of the season for The Lookout's "igloos," as they will be in place through Monday.]

"Igloos" Coming to The Lookout Bar in Boston's Seaport District

A rooftop bar in Boston's Seaport District will soon have a new and rather unusual concept that will allow customers to be outside no matter how cold it is.

NBC Boston is reporting (via the bar's Facebook page) that The Lookout at the Envoy Hotel on Sleeper Street is setting up six "igloos," each of which is heated and lit and has seating for eight to ten people along with a small table set up in each one. The post says that when customers in one of the igloos wish to order a drink, they flip a switch to get the attention of a server at the bar, which is located inside the hotel.
