Apex Bar and Lounge to Open in Boston's Financial District

It looks like a new cocktail bar and lounge is on its way to downtown Boston, and it will apparently be part of a multi-concept cannabis dispensary with a former mayoral candidate behind it.

According to a licensing board page within the city's website, Apex Bar and Lounge is planning to open in the Financial District, taking over at least part of the space on State Street that had been home to Little Rose Taco Bar, and before that, Kamakura. An earlier Dig Boston article mentioned that Tito Jackson is behind the place, which, according to a media statement, is called Apex Noire and will be "part cannabis dispensary and wholly an experience," including a dispensary space, an art/music gallery, and the cocktail bar itself, and based on the hearing notice, it appears that Apex Bar and Lounge plans to be on the 6th and 7th floor of the building, with the top floor being a roof deck.

Tito Jackson ran for mayor in 2017 and he has also been a city council member.

The address for the upcoming Apex Bar and Lounge is 150 State Street, Boston, MA, 02109. The website for Apex Noire will be at https://apexnoire.com/

Globe Bar & Cafe in Boston's Back Bay Has Closed

A restaurant and bar that was located in a space with one of the best-known roofdecks in Boston has shut down.

According to consultant and publicist Kerry J. Byrne, the Globe Bar & Cafe in the Back Bay is now closed, with Byrne and several other sources (including @mrovelli) indicating that it was an abrupt closure that took place over the weekend. This has since been confirmed by @HeyRatty, who showed us a note from the Boylston Street spot saying that its closure was "due to unseen circumstances."

The Globe Bar & Cafe first opened a bit less than 15 years ago on a section of Boylston Street in the Copley Square area, moving from there to the former Rattlesnake Bar & Grill space a short distance east in early 2018. The place was known in part for its New American and classic American fare along with its cocktails--and its aforementioned roofdeck.

The address for the Globe Bar & Cafe was 384 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Will Gilson to Open Dining/Drinking Complex at Cambridge Crossing in East Cambridge

In the fall of 2017, it was reported that a new complex in East Cambridge could include multiple restaurants, and now we learned that a group of the dining spots on the way will include those run by a well-known chef and restaurateur.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Will Gilson is planning to open a full-service restaurant, an all-day cafe, and a cocktail bar within a standalone structure at Cambridge Crossing, a new development near where Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston meet and which had formerly been called NorthPoint. The post says that also included will be a rooftop terrace along with an outdoor patio at ground level based on the rendering shown. If all goes as planned, the dining and drinking spot may open in the early part of 2020.

Gilson is behind Puritan & Co., a restaurant in Inman Square that offers New American and regional fare, as well as Cafe Beatrice, a long-term pop-up eatery in Lower Allston that plans to remain in place until later this year. [Ed note: Now closed as it gets ready to move to Cambridge Crossing.]

[March 13, 2020 update: Eater Boston says that the ground-floor dining spot from Will Gilson will be an Italian restaurant called Geppetto while Cafe Beatrice (as mentioned above) will reopen in the complex as well, and the upstairs space and rooftop bar will be called The Lexington, which is also the name of the project itself--and is described as "a hotel with no rooms" by Gilson. (A private dining room will also be on the upper level.) It appears that Geppetto and Cafe Beatrice could be opening around mid-June, with Geppetto opening in July, but check back for more updates on any opening dates as they come in.]

G Pub Being Proposed for Brockton's Downtown Area

by Marc Hurwitz

It appears that a gastropub that would have a retro vibe and a rooftop area is being planned for a city south of Boston that is in the process of redeveloping its downtown area.

Wicked Local is reporting that Colin Geoffroy of G Hospitality is looking to open a location of G Pub in the Corcoran Building (which is being redeveloped into a mixed-use residential complex) in Brockton, joining the original location which can be found in Providence. The article says that the Montello Street spot would have 7,000 square feet of space and have a speakeasy feel to it while having a scratch kitchen, TVs at each of the booths, entertainment such as pool tables, arcade games, and shuffleboard, and a rooftop terrace that is open during the warmer months.

If all goes as planned, the new G Pub could open in the spring or summer of 2020, and it would possibly be a third location of the place, as G Hospitality is planning to open another outlet of the spot in Plymouth this fall. (The restaurant group also runs Rooftop at the ProvidenceG as well.)

The website for the original G Pub in Providence can be found at http://www.providencegpub.com/

[November 1 update: Plans are moving forward with G Pub in Brockton, with a Facebook post mentioning that construction on the place is slated to begin this winter.]

Dorchester Brewing Company to Add a Restaurant, Greenhouse, and Roofdeck to Space

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a brewery just south of downtown Boston has some big plans in the works.

According to an article from WBUR, Dorchester Brewing Company is looking to add a restaurant to its space, with a rooftop greenhouse and a roofdeck included in its plans along with a larger tasting room. If all goes as planned, the new expansion should be up and running by October.

Dorchester Brewing Company, which first opened in the summer of 2016, was the first dedicated contract brewing facility to open in Boston--and the entire state of Massachusetts. The beers produced here come from both the people behind the brewery itself along with other brewers in the local area and beyond.

Igloos Return to The Lookout Bar in Boston's Seaport District

by Marc Hurwitz

A rooftop hotel bar in Boston's Seaport District is set up once again for the colder months, bringing back a rather unusual concept that had been in place for a short time earlier this year.

According to a web page from the spot, The Lookout at the Envoy Hotel has its "igloos" back in place from now until April of 2018, and as was the case over the past winter, they are heated and lit and with room for eight to ten people. The page says that blankets are provided for extra warmth, and that customers simply have to press a button which illuminates the igloo to get the attention of a server. A total of six igloos are set up at The Lookout, with hours being 4:00 PM through 10:00 PM Wednesday through Sunday on a first-come, first-served basis.

The page mentions that only drinks are offered in the igloos at this point in time, but that The Outlook downstairs offers food to patrons.

The address for The Lookout (along with The Outlook and the Envoy Hotel) is 70 Sleeper Street, Boston, MA, 02210.

[April 13, 2018 update: Eater Boston states that this is the last weekend of the season for The Lookout's "igloos," as they will be in place through Monday.]
