Darryl's Bar and Kitchen Opening in Boston's South End

A restaurant featuring Southern-influenced cuisine is going to be opening in the South End of Boston, moving into the space where a handful of restaurants and clubs have resided in recent times.

According to both EveryBlock Boston and Zagat Boston, Darryl's Bar & Kitchen will open on Columbus Avenue along the western edge of the South End (just west of Mass. Ave.). The spot that Darryl's will be going into formerly housed a restaurant and jazz lounge called The Stork Club, which closed a couple of months ago. Before The Stork Club was a short-lived French restaurant called Circle, and before that, Bob's Southern Bistro and a popular restaurant and club called Bob The Chef's. Zagat states that the person behind Bob The Chef's is also going to be behind Darryl's Bar & Kitchen, which will focus on American fare with a nod toward Southern dishes. According to Zagat, there will also be occasional live music, and a full bar will be included as part of the new spot.

It appears that Darryl's Bar & Kitchen may be opening very soon, as Zagat mentions that it will be in operation anytime from today on. [August 24 update: Based on a post on Grub Street Boston, it looks like Darryl's Bar & Kitchen is now open for business.]

News Elsewhere: When Pigs Fly Is Opening a Pizza Restaurant in Kittery, Maine

It looks like a New England-based bakery and retailer with several locations in the region (including two in the Boston area) may be opening a restaurant in Southern Maine that features pizza.

According to SeacoastOnline.com, the people behind When Pigs Fly are hoping to open a pizza restaurant at the site of Durgin Farm on Route 1 in Kittery. The plan is to have a dining spot that features a wood-fired oven, along with a store that sells the bakery's breads. The article states that if the plans for the place work out, the restaurant will be housed in a 5,000-square-foot structure that also has a 1,200-square-foot porch, and seating for 50 to 100 diners.

SeacoastOnline.com mentions that the restaurant still needs to go through several steps before it can become reality, including approval from the Kittery Planning Board.

[May 24, 2011 update: When Pigs Fly did receive approval for its new When Pigs Fly Wood Fired Oven Pizzeria on Route 1 in Kittery, and construction seems to be moving along. About two weeks ago, the Facebook page for When Pigs Fly indicated that the new restaurant should be opening "in only a few more weeks," so expect the place to open very soon.]

When Pigs Fly first started out in Wells, Maine in 1993, and has now grown to include stores in York, Kittery, and Freeport, as well as Portsmouth, NH, and Brookline and Somerville in the Boston area. Its breads can be found in markets and stores throughout the Northeast, as well as Farmers' Markets in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Two More Restaurants on the Way: Happy Owl Cafe, Central Grill and Cafe

It looks like a couple more dining spots will be coming to the Boston area, though at this time, very little information can be found on either place.

In Brighton, the Happy Owl Cafe will apparently be opening at the corner of Henshaw Street and Cambridge Street (across from St. Elizabeth's Medical Center), according to a post on the EveryBlock Boston site. The address for the Happy Owl Cafe happens to be the same one as Cafe 57 & Grille, a European-style cafe that opened about a year ago. We are trying to find out if the owners of Cafe 57 & Grille are morphing their restaurant into the Happy Owl Cafe, or whether it is going to be a completely new eatery with new ownership, so keep checking back for updates. [January 31, 2011, update: According to The Allston/Brighton TAB and Wicked Local, The Happy Owl Cafe is now open for business. In Woburn, The Passionate Foodie mentioned to us that Central Grill & Cafe is going to be opening on Main Street in the downtown area of the city where the Italian restaurant La Stanza Diva used to be until closing this past winter. It was not known for sure whether La Stanza Diva was temporarily or permanently closed when they first went dark several months back, but the sign in the window mentioning Central Grill & Cafe's pending opening confirms that they are indeed gone for good, at least in this space. As for Central Grill & Cafe, little information can be found on the place at the present time, so once again, keep checking back for updates. Portuguese Festival Coming to Woburn Friday, August 13 to Sunday, August 15, 2010

Woburn will be home to a festival this coming weekend, with a wide variety of Portuguese foods offered in addition to music from a DJ and a band.

Based on a post on the Chowhound site, the Portuguese festival will be held today, tomorrow, and Sunday at the Portuguese American Club on Route 38 between Winchester and Woburn centers. The post mentions that some of the foods included will be pork steak, linguica, tripe, and malasadas. Beer and wine will also be available.

News Elsewhere: Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill Is Coming to Fall River

A former Boston Red Sox player and current broadcaster is opening a new restaurant in the area where he grew up.

According to The Herald News, negotiations are currently in the works to bring a new location of Jerry Remy's Sports Bar to Fall River. If the plan goes through, the restaurant will be located in Quaker Fabric's Davol Street headquarters, which is an old mill building that was the former headquarters of Quaker Fabric on Davol Street (along the waterfront near Battleship Cove). The article mentions that the parties involved seem to be very close to working the deal out, and that a second unnamed restaurant might also be coming to the building, which is more than 100 years old and has nearly 250,000 square feet of space.

[October 12, 2012 update: According to a worker who posted on their Facebook page, Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill in Fall River is planning to soft-open tonight.]

Two other Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill exist in Boston (one near Fenway Park and another at Logan Airport), with a third soon coming to Liberty Wharf in the Seaport District of the city. [September 22, 2011 update: The Liberty Wharf location of Jerry Remy's is open.]

The New Brown Jug in Chelsea Is Moving

A restaurant and watering hole in Chelsea that is known for its bar pizza will soon be in a new location. According to their website, the New Brown Jug on Adams Street will be moving a few hundred feet away to the old El Pollo Loco space on the Revere Beach Parkway. (El Pollo Loco was a flamed-grilled chicken place that closed this past winter.) The New Brown Jug site states that the restaurant should be in their new spot sometime around August 28.

A classic old-school eatery and bar that has been in business for more than 20 years, the New Brown Jug features pizza and calzones, as well as beer, wine, and mixed drinks. Our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) has a featured review on the restaurant, which can be found here:
