The owner of a Jamaica Plain restaurant that features Spanish food and pizza is hoping to get a license to serve food...five years after buying the place.
According to the Jamaica Plain Gazette, Los Bendecidos Pizza & Restaurant on Hyde Park Avenue is seeking a Common Victualler License, which is required in order to operate a dining spot. The article mentions that five years ago, the restaurant's owner purchased the place from someone who apparently did not have the license (the restaurant has been in business for more than a decade).
The license issue was discovered during a routine inspection of Los Bendecidos Pizza & Restaurant, according to the Gazette. The city will allow the eatery to stay open while the situation is resolved.

Update: The Ugly American in Fall River Is Closing, Moving to Providence
About a month after we first reported that a popular Fall River eatery was planning to open a second location in Providence, it now appears that the original location will be shutting down.
According to The Herald News, The Ugly American at 240 New Boston Road in Fall River will close sometime within the next few days, as the owner decided that it would be too difficult to maintain two separate outlets of the restaurant. The article mentions that the new location of The Ugly American should be open later this month at 167 Ives Street in Providence's Fox Point neighborhood.
The Ugly American first started out in Fall River in 2007, though the owner had originally hoped to open Providence or Newport, RI back then, according to The Herald News. The rents were too high in those two cities, causing him to look over the border in Fall River.

The Boston Pie Experiment to Be Held in Cambridge on July 31, 2011
A Brooklyn-based series of amateur cook-offs is on its way to the Boston area, with an event being held in Cambridge at the end of the month.
An email sent to us indicates that The Food Experiments (presented by the Brooklyn Brewery) will be holding The Boston Pie Experiment at the Middle East Club on Mass. Ave. in Central Square on July 31 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. All are invited to compete or attend, with the top prize for the best pie (which can be either savory or sweet) being a trip to Brooklyn to compete against all other the cook-off winners from around the country. Judges for the event will be Gerry Tice (Executive Chef, Omni Parker House Restaurant), Paul Schiavone (CEO, Boston Chefs, Inc.), and Eunice Feller (Chef/Owner, Bread & Chocolate Bakery).
Tickets to the event cost $10 in advance or $15 on the day of the event, with the cost of admission including tasting samples and a beer from Brooklyn Brewery. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Food Project, a local charity that helps engage young people in personal and social change through sustainable agriculture.

KO Catering and Pies in South Boston to Put Its Food Truck on the Road

An Australian takeout restaurant, retail food shop, and caterer in South Boston that opened last fall is going to be launching a food truck.
According to information within their website, it appears that KO Catering and Pies on A Street will apparently be getting its food truck up and running soon, and once it is on the road, folks will be able to find its location via the KO Twitter page. The new truck will offer a number of items on its menu, including meat pies, veggie pies, chicken schnitzel burgers, fish and chips, sausage rolls, grilled fish sandwiches, sweet corn fritters, and Aussie-style granola. Prices for nearly all items will be under $10.

Legal C Bar and Kings Are Coming to Lynnfield
The group behind Legacy Place in Dedham have plans in the works for another huge open-air retail center in Lynnfield, and with it, at least two familiar names on the local restaurant scene opening there.
According to The Boston Globe, Legal C Bar and Kings are just two of a number of dining establishments that are opening at MarketStreet Lynnfield, a new lifestyle retail complex that (according to the MarketStreet website) will also include apartments, office space, and a 9-hole golf course. The complex, which looks to be approximately 400,000 square feet in size, is being built at the site of the former Colonial Country Club property near the intersection of Routes 128/95 and Walnut Street. The Globe article mentions that a town green with restaurants surrounding it will be included within the space, with summer concerts being a possibility there. In addition to various dining spots, a Whole Foods market is opening within the complex.
Legal C Bar, which is an offshoot of the Legal Sea Foods chain, currently has locations at Legacy Place, Logan Airport in East Boston, and Hingham. Kings, which is an entertainment facility that includes bowling, food, and drink, has locations in Boston and Legacy Place, with another one coming to Burlington as well.
