TGI Fridays in Boston's Mission Hill/Brigham Circle Area Has Closed

A restaurant chain continues to shrink in the local area, as its sole Boston location has now shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, TGI Fridays in the Mission Hill/Brigham Circle section of the city is no longer in business, with a check on the locations section of the chain's website confirming this, as the Tremont Street outlet has been removed. With the closing of this location, there are now only two TGI Fridays remaining in the Greater Boston area--in Everett and Stoughton--with two others a bit further out in Methuen and Millbury.

Closings of TGI Fridays locations over the past couple of years have taken place in Braintree, Dedham, Mansfield, Marlborough, North Attleborough, North Dartmouth, and Seekonk.

The address for the now-closed location of TGI Fridays in Mission Hill/Brigham Circle was 1626 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02120. The website for the chain is at https://tgifridays.com/

Yellow Door Taqueria Is Replacing Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood

It looks like a pair of Mexican restaurants will be joined by a third, with this one taking over the space where a popular Irish pub has been.

According to a licensing commission hearing page within the City of Boston website, Yellow Door Taqueria is planning to open in the city's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood, moving into the Flann O'Brien's space on Tremont Street. If approved, the new location of the Mexican spot would join others in the South End and  Dorchester's Lower Mills.

The future of Flann O'Brien's had been in question for awhile now, as it appeared that the pub was being sold in late 2020 and early 2021. At that time, it looked like it could end up reopening under new ownership.

The address for the new Yellow Door Taqueria (and Flann O'Brien's) is 1619 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02120. The website for the other two locations of the Mexican restaurant can be found at https://www.yellowdoortaqueria.com/

[December 12 update: According to a post from Boston Magazine, Yellow Door Taqueria is now open in Brigham Circle/Mission Hill.]

Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood Is Apparently Being Sold

It looks like the future of a popular Irish pub may be in question.

According to an article in The Newport Daily News, Finbarr Murray, who is behind both the Fastnet Pub in Newport, RI, and Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill, is planning to purchase The Port Seafood Grill and Bar  in Newport and eventually turn it into an Irish pub, possibly by May of 2021. The post mentions that the purchase would be part of a 1031 exchange in which he sells Flann O'Brien's and reinvests the proceeds of that sale into what would appear to be the investment in The Port for tax purposes--and it looks like Murray is selling the bar to Cornerstone Real Estate apartment developer and manager Adam Sarbaugh, based on information from the article. Murray isn't sure what will happen to Flann's, saying that while he feels badly for the workers at the Tremont Street watering hole, he quotes his former boss Mark Kelly in saying that "It's only four walls, that's all it is....Don't get attached to your bar, it's four walls."

Flann O'Brien's has been a regular haunt for students at Northeastern University over the years, along with workers in the nearby Longwood medical area and Irish immigrants, with its menu including such items as curry fries, mussels, Irish bangers, steak tips, fish and chips, and an Irish BLT.

The address for Flann O'Brien's is 1619 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02120. Its website can be found at http://flanns.com/

[January 22, 2021 update: There appears to be a ray of hope for Flann O'Brien's to return, as a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website indicates that a transfer of license ownership to do business as Flann O'Brien's is slated to be looked at on Wednesday, January 27.]

[January 27, 2021 update: A message from Adam of Universal Hub confirms that Flann O'Brien's is looking to reopen under new ownership, with the plan being to add onto the building while keeping the pub in place.]

Il Mondo Pizzeria Is Opening in Former Grub Space in Brigham Circle

by Marc Hurwitz

A pizza and sandwich shop that used to have a location in the Brigham Circle area of Boston is returning to that neighborhood, taking over the space where a short-lived eatery that featured poutine had been.

According to a source (Geoff Wong), Il Mondo Pizzeria is opening in the former Grub space on Huntington Avenue, joining another location on Mass. Ave. near where the Back Bay and the Fenway meet. Il Mondo had also been located on Huntington Avenue on the other side of Brigham Circle, but that shop recently shut down, so this could be more of a move than a closure though the details about why that location closed and this location is opening are not known as of yet. Based on the menu at the old location (and that of the Mass. Ave. outlet), expect to see pizza, calzones, salads, appetizers, pasta dishes, sandwiches, and grill items at the new shop.

Grub, which first opened in the late fall of 2016, shut down last October; the owner of the place also runs Penguin Pizza across the street, which remains in operation.

The address for the new location of Il Mondo Pizzeria is 738 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA, 02115. The website for the business can be found at http://www.ilmondopizza.com/index.php

[March 20 update: According to a Twitter post from @epeemike81, Il Mondo Pizzeria is now open in the former Grub space, while the website for the business shows the new address along with the Mass. Ave. address.]

Dermot Doyne of Penguin Pizza first opened Grub in the late fall of 2016, offering a variety of poutine options along with sandwiches and brunch items.

Penguin Pizza has been mentioned in the press as a top place for pizza over the years, with The Improper Bostonian awarding it best restaurant in Mission Hill while CBS Boston included it among its 2014 picks for best pizza and beer.

The address for Grub is 738 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115.

Chilacates Is Opening a New Location in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A pair of Mexican eateries in Jamaica Plain will be expanding to a third location not too far away from the others.

Eater Boston is reporting (via a poster on Twitter) that Chilacates is opening in the Mission Hill section of Boston, with the Tremont Street spot joining shops on Amory Street and Centre Street in JP. The article says that a lease has already been signed for the space and that a buildout will now take place, which could take four to six months.

Chilacates first opened its original Amory Street shop in the summer of 2015, offering such items as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and tortas; the second location opened this past February in the Centre Street space where Pink Samurai was supposed to have been. The pair of restaurants have been media and industry darlings since opening, with Boston Magazine giving it a "best of" for Mexican food this year.

The address for the new Chilacates in Mission Hill is 1480 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02120.

[January 22, 2019 update: A licensing board hearing page indicates that the long-awaited Mission Hill location of Chilacates could finally be a step closer to opening by this week, as a meeting on its application for a Common Victualler License is scheduled to take place tomorrow. This could still end up being its third location even with outlets in the South End, Roslindale, and Chestnut Hill now in the works as well, though an Instagram post from last month hints that the Chestnut Hill shop may also be close to opening.]

[February 11, 2019 update: Eater Boston mentions that the Mission Hill location of Chilacates opened its doors yesterday, becoming the fourth location of the group of Mexican restaurants (as stated here earlier, the Chestnut Hill location opened on Friday).]

Laughing Monk Cafe Taking Over Former SoulFire Space in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill

It looks like a now-closed BBQ spot in Boston will be replaced by a new Asian restaurant.

An earlier article in the Mission Hill Gazette is reporting what a source told us last week, that business partners Dome Nakapakorn and Todd Lamothe are looking to open the Laughing Monk Cafe in the Brigham Circle/Mission Hill section of the city, taking over the space on Huntington Avenue where a location of SoulFire had been. The article mentions that the new dining spot will have the motto "Thai by day and Sushi by night" and that it would apparently be an upscale eatery with seating for 34. Nakapakorn's family operates a chain of Thai restaurants in Houston, according to the Gazette.

SoulFire closed its doors for good in January, with its original restaurant on Harvard Avenue in Allston shutting down about 10 days later. The Allston space will become home to a Korean chicken spot called BB.Q Chicken.

The address for this new Asian restaurant in Brigham Circle/Mission Hill is: Laughing Monk Cafe, 737 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA, 02115.

[April 28 update: Eater Boston states that Laughing Monk Cafe has soft-opened, with an official opening coming on May 2.]

Ginger Exchange in Cambridge Is Opening Mission Sushi and Wok in Mission Hill/Brigham Circle

[Ed note: This article was updated on January 24, 2013 to reflect a name given for the restaurant, along with other information.]

The Mission Hill/Brigham Circle space where an eclectic comfort food spot had been until closing last spring may not be empty much longer, as an Asian restaurant in Cambridge is planning to open a new eatery there.

According to Universal Hub, the folks behind the Ginger Exchange on Cambridge Street in Inman Square are seeking permission to acquire the beer and wine license formerly owned by The Savant Project, a Tremont Street restaurant that closed in May of 2011. The article mentions that if all goes as planned, the Ginger Exchange owners will be opening a sushi bar in the space, though no other details (including a name) seem to be available at this point in time.

[May 17 update: It looks like the new Mission Hill/Brigham Circle location of the Ginger Exchange may be close to being up and running, as a Craigslist post states that the Cambridge-based restaurant is hiring for an upcoming grand opening (though it does not specify where).
