Flann O'Brien's May Be Returning to Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Area

It looks like a beloved Irish pub that said farewell to Boston several years ago could be coming back.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Flann O'Brien's is looking to open back up in its former location in the Brigham Circle/Mission Hill neighborhood, moving into its space on Tremont Street that had been home to a location of Yellow Door Taqueria from late 2022 until closing earlier this year. The notice mentions that the new incarnation of the pub would have seating within a dining area and a bar along with additional seating in a rear TV room, with Scott Prince being the manager listed.

Flann O'Brien's, which had been in business since at least the 1990s, closed during the early part of the pandemic, and while there had been hope that it might return, those plans fell through and Yellow Door Taqueria (which currently has locations in Dorchester, the South End, and Providence, RI) took over the space.

[June 25 update: Universal Hub reports that the people behind the Banshee in Dorchester are looking to reopen Flann O'Brien's and that they would "seek to run the same sort of bar as the original - a gathering place for locals, visitors, families and workers at nearby hospitals serving standard Irish-American and comfort food, with brunch on weekends."]

TGI Fridays in Boston's Mission Hill/Brigham Circle Area Has Closed

A restaurant chain continues to shrink in the local area, as its sole Boston location has now shut down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, TGI Fridays in the Mission Hill/Brigham Circle section of the city is no longer in business, with a check on the locations section of the chain's website confirming this, as the Tremont Street outlet has been removed. With the closing of this location, there are now only two TGI Fridays remaining in the Greater Boston area--in Everett and Stoughton--with two others a bit further out in Methuen and Millbury.

Closings of TGI Fridays locations over the past couple of years have taken place in Braintree, Dedham, Mansfield, Marlborough, North Attleborough, North Dartmouth, and Seekonk.

It looks like a location of a small group of Mexican restaurants has shuttered.

According to a source, Yellow Door Taqueria in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill neighborhood is no longer in operation, as the windows are papered over and the sign for the Tremont Street spot has been taken down. The website for Yellow Door seems to confirm its closure as the location has been removed from the site, while a phone call indicates that the number is no longer in service.

Yellow Door Taqueria first opened in Brigham Circle/Mission Hill toward the end of 2022, replacing Flann O'Brien's; currently, there are locations in the South End and Dorchester's Lower Mills along with a new one in Providence.

Flour Bakery + Cafe Is Opening in the Former J.P. Licks Space in Boston's Mission Hill

A local group of bakery-cafes is planning to open a new location, replacing a now-closed location of a local group of ice cream shops.

According to an article from What Now Boston, Flour Bakery + Cafe is going to be opening in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood, taking over the former J.P. Licks space at One Brigham Circle on Tremont Street. Once it debuts (possibly around the beginning of 2026), the new location of Flour will join 10 others in and around Boston, including its newest location on Boston Common.

Fire Rips Through The Squealing Pig in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A restaurant and bar in Boston that is popular with nearby college students and medical workers has sustained severe damage in an overnight fire.

According to an article from NECN, The Squealing Pig in the city's Mission Hill area was hit by an intense blaze around midnight, with firefighters being able to quickly extinguish the flames but not before causing the interior of the Smith Street spot to be "completely charred." No injuries were reported in the fire, which is currently under investigation.

The Mission Hill location of The Squealing Pig resides near several colleges and universities (including Northeastern) while being a few blocks south of the Longwood medical area; another location of the place can be found in Provincetown.

This is the second fire to hit a restaurant space in two days, as the building housing the soon-to-reopen Jacob Wirth in the Theater District was heavily damaged in a four-alarm blaze late Monday night.

Wok n Talk in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood Appears to Have Closed Permanently

A Chinese and Asian fusion spot located near where Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain meet has apparently shut down for good.

According to a source, Wok n Talk on S Huntington Avenue is permanently closed, with our source telling us that it had been temporarily shuttered by the Boston Licensing Board for expired licenses and a locked fire exit, both of which were mentioned in a hearing notice from September. A check on the website indicates that the site is no longer running and phone calls go directly to voicemail, though the Brighton location of the eatery does appear to remain in operation.

Wok n Talk first opened in Mission Hill in 2011.

Cilantro Latin Kitchen Is Opening in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A new dining spot is on its way to a Boston neighborhood, and the couple behind it run three other restaurants in the city.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Cilantro Latin Kitchen is planning to open in Mission Hill, moving into a space on Tremont Street by the Roxbury Crossing T station. The post mentions that owners Hector and Nivia Piña (Doña Habana, Merengue, Vejigantes) say it will be a fast-casual eatery with healthy Latin fare, with Hector stating that "Our idea is to bring healthy food to the neighborhood and also teach people how eat the correct proportions of proteins, carbs, and vegetables."

Yellow Door Taqueria Is Replacing Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood

It looks like a pair of Mexican restaurants will be joined by a third, with this one taking over the space where a popular Irish pub has been.

According to a licensing commission hearing page within the City of Boston website, Yellow Door Taqueria is planning to open in the city's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood, moving into the Flann O'Brien's space on Tremont Street. If approved, the new location of the Mexican spot would join others in the South End and  Dorchester's Lower Mills.

The future of Flann O'Brien's had been in question for awhile now, as it appeared that the pub was being sold in late 2020 and early 2021. At that time, it looked like it could end up reopening under new ownership.

Wood Fired Love Is Opening in The Squealing Pig Space in Boston's Mission Hill/Brigham Circle Area

It looks like an Irish pub will soon be home to a restaurant that features pizza.

According to a source, Wood Fired Love opening within The Squealing Pig space in the Mission Hill/Brigham Circle section of Boston, with an Instagram page for the pizza spot indicating that it will be opening soon and that Galleon Ventures--which is behind The Squealing Pig--is indeed the group behind the upcoming spot. A message from the restaurant group tells us that the pizza will be available for curbside pickup and delivery at the start.

Another location of The Squealing Pig in West Roxbury closed down last summer, with its other location in Provincetown remaining in operation.

Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood Is Apparently Being Sold

It looks like the future of a popular Irish pub may be in question.

According to an article in The Newport Daily News, Finbarr Murray, who is behind both the Fastnet Pub in Newport, RI, and Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill, is planning to purchase The Port Seafood Grill and Bar  in Newport and eventually turn it into an Irish pub, possibly by May of 2021. The post mentions that the purchase would be part of a 1031 exchange in which he sells Flann O'Brien's and reinvests the proceeds of that sale into what would appear to be the investment in The Port for tax purposes--and it looks like Murray is selling the bar to Cornerstone Real Estate apartment developer and manager Adam Sarbaugh, based on information from the article. Murray isn't sure what will happen to Flann's, saying that while he feels badly for the workers at the Tremont Street watering hole, he quotes his former boss Mark Kelly in saying that "It's only four walls, that's all it is....Don't get attached to your bar, it's four walls."

Flann O'Brien's has been a regular haunt for students at Northeastern University over the years, along with workers in the nearby Longwood medical area and Irish immigrants, with its menu including such items as curry fries, mussels, Irish bangers, steak tips, fish and chips, and an Irish BLT.

Boba Me Opens in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A bubble tea spot has come to a part of Boston that is starting to see more and more dining options.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Boba Me is now open on Tremont Street in a section of Mission Hill between Brigham Circle and Roxbury Crossing, with the place offering such options as smoothies, milk teas, green teas, and classic teas. The post mentions that Boba Me will also offer "flaming hot cheese fries" at some point, with the menu for the spot saying that those will be coming soon.

The stretch of Tremont Street in which Boba Me resides has seen such recent openings as Nachlo and Milkweed, and a board game cafe called Tavern of Tales is in the works there as well.

Nachlo Opens in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A new dining spot has come to the Mission Hill section of Boston, and it features an interesting mix of foods.

Eater Boston confirms what a couple of sources had told us earlier, that Nachlo is now open on Tremont Street near the Roxbury Crossing T station, and as the sources mentioned, the restaurant offers a mix of Pakistani and Mexican fare. The menu for the new spot includes such items as naan, kebabs, lamb kofta, chicken biryani, nachos, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, guacamole, and more, and it is open for lunch and dinner daily.

Solid Ground Cafe Opens in Boston's Mission Hill/Brigham Circle Neighborhood

A brand new cafe that serves breakfast all day has come to an increasingly hot section of Boston.

Eater Boston is reporting that Solid Ground Cafe is in the middle of what appears to be a soft opening in the Mission Hill/Brigham Circle section of the city, with the 18-seat eatery offering breakfast from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays and lunch (including salads and sandwiches) starting at 11:00 AM. The article says that a grand opening will take place on Monday, January 28, and that once it is fully open, the dining spot will include Saturday hours as well from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Tavern of Tales Is Opening in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

A brand new board game cafe may be on its way to Boston, and it looks like its offerings may include alcohol.

According to a licensing commission hearing page within the city's website, Tavern of Tales is planning to open in Mission Hill, with the Tremont Street spot applying for a malt, wine, and liqueur license, while the notice also says that the spot will have a total of eight rooms--though it appears that at least some of it will be used for office and storage space. The website for Tavern of Tales mentions that "we're a board game cafe focused on visitors experiencing board games in an entirely new way. With innovative use of audio and narration, we want our players to not just play the board games in our inventory, but experience them." Its games list includes Above and Below, Eight Minute Empire, Forbidden Island, and The Resistance.

If all goes as planned, Tavern of Tales could be opening in the spring, according to its Twitter page.

Bucktown Chicken & Fish to Open in Boston's Mission Hill Neighborhood

According to an article from Eater Boston, Bucktown Chicken & Fish is planning to open in the city's Mission Hill neighborhood, with the Tremont Street eatery joining a restaurant simply named "Bucktown" in the Federal Hill section of Providence. The article says that place will offer fried comfort food items such as fish sandwiches, hush puppies, oyster and shrimp po' boys, chicken and waffles, and more, and the owners are also seeking a full liquor license for the spot as well. It is not yet known when Bucktown Chicken & Fish might open, so stay tuned for updates.

Il Mondo Pizzeria Is Opening in Former Grub Space in Brigham Circle

A pizza and sandwich shop that used to have a location in the Brigham Circle area of Boston is returning to that neighborhood, taking over the space where a short-lived eatery that featured poutine had been.

According to a source (Geoff Wong), Il Mondo Pizzeria is opening in the former Grub space on Huntington Avenue, joining another location on Mass. Ave. near where the Back Bay and the Fenway meet. Il Mondo had also been located on Huntington Avenue on the other side of Brigham Circle, but that shop recently shut down, so this could be more of a move than a closure though the details about why that location closed and this location is opening are not known as of yet. Based on the menu at the old location (and that of the Mass. Ave. outlet), expect to see pizza, calzones, salads, appetizers, pasta dishes, sandwiches, and grill items at the new shop.

Grub, which first opened in the late fall of 2016, shut down last October; the owner of the place also runs Penguin Pizza across the street, which remains in operation.

Beta Burger in Boston's Mission Hill Has Reopened After Resolving Permitting Issue

Earlier this month, we reported that a burger spot in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood had been shut down by the city due to a problem involving its license. Now we have learned that the restaurant is open once again.

Eater Boston mentions in an update (via a Facebook post from the place) that Beta Burger on Tremont Street has reopened, with the post indicating that it received its common victualler license yesterday and are open as of today. On October 11, it was learned that the burger spot was temporarily closed after it failed to renew its license, resulting in the licensing board shutting it down. A note within Beta Burger's Instagram page had said that "Since opening in 2015 we have had problems getting our final permit from the City of Boston and this Friday August 18th, the City decided to shut us down. Now this may suck temporarily but we are working very hard to sort this out and get back up and running as soon as possible." It appears that at least part of the issue centered around an issue in the restaurant's electrical room, with the eatery needing to deal with both the expired Common Victualler License and an expired temporary Inspection Certificate.

Grub in Boston's Mission Hill Is Closing

A restaurant that is run by the person behind a highly-rated pizzeria is getting ready to shut down after less than a year in business.

According to a source, Grub in the Mission Hill/Brigham Circle section of Boston is closing for good at the end of this week, with an Instagram post from the Huntington Avenue eatery referring customers to Penguin Pizza across the street while also hinting that at least some of the menu items at Grub will be offered there in the near future. Dermot Doyne of Penguin Pizza first opened Grub in the late fall of 2016, offering a variety of poutine options along with sandwiches and brunch items.

Penguin Pizza has been mentioned in the press as a top place for pizza over the years, with The Improper Bostonian awarding it best restaurant in Mission Hill while CBS Boston included it among its 2014 picks for best pizza and beer.

Beta Burger in Mission Hill Shut Down Due to Permitting Issue; Exact Status Unknown

A burger spot in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood has been shut down by the city, and it is not known when it might reopen.

Eater Boston is reporting (via an Instagram post from the place) that Beta Burger in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood is temporarily closed, as the licensing board made the decision late this summer to shut the Tremont Street eatery because it failed to renew its common victualler license. The Instagram post shows a note that says "Since opening in 2015 we have had problems getting our final permit from the City of Boston and this Friday August 18th, the City decided to shut us down. Now this may suck temporarily but we are working very hard to sort this out and get back up and running as soon as possible." EB says that Beta Burger had actually been closed down by the city on August 8 for failure to renew the license, with owner Adrian Wong stating that he "had every intention to renew the license but just couldn't get it done fast enough." No representatives for the dining spot showed up at the August 8 hearing--which was supposed to discuss both the common victualler license and an expired temporary inspection certificate--according to the article. (Wong mentions that getting a permanent certificate has been a problem because of an issue in the restaurant's electrical room.)

A disciplinary hearing is expected to take place on October 24, where a decision could be made on whether the city will allow Beta Burger to open back up again.
