Darling Is Opening in Cambridge's Central Square This Month

Last spring, it was reported that a new cocktail bar was looking to open in Cambridge, and now we have learned that it is just about ready to debut.

According to an article from boston.com, Darling is on the verge of opening in Central Square, with a planned opening date of the middle of this month as of this writing. The Mass. Ave. spot is taking over the space where Mary Chung had been until closing at the end of 2022, and it plans to offer "Chinese inspired" cocktails along with dim sum fare--and as mentioned in an earlier article, Brian Callahan (Row 34, Orfano, Tiger Mama, Coquette, Grafton Street) is one of the people behind it, along with Zimu Chen (Coquette, Eastern Standard, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, Mariel).

The address for Darling in Central Square is 464 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Its website will be at https://www.darlingcambridge.com/

[July 17 update: According to a press release, Darling opens on July 18.]

Zusammen Is Opening in North Cambridge

A brand new wine bar is planning to open in Cambridge, and it looks like it has an ownership connection to a food and wine shop a few storefronts away.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Zusammen is looking to open on Mass. Ave. in North Cambridge, moving into a space less than a block from Momma's Grocery + Wine, which apparently sent out a newsletter about the upcoming spot. Very little is known about Zusammen at this point in time, so keep checking back for updates.

The owner of Momma's Grocery + Wine also ran the now-closed Schmetterling Wine Shop in Middlebury, VT, with the Cambridge store offering such options as locally-grown produce, locally-sourced meat and dairy products, maple creemees, coffee, and more.

The address for the upcoming Zusammen is 2322 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02140. Its website will be at https://www.zusammen.wine/

[May 14 update: An Instagram post from @bondircambridge indicates that Zusammen is now open, though its website still appears to be under construction.]

Whitney's in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Closing

It appears that one of the last dive bars in Cambridge is shutting down.

According to an article from The Boston Globe along with a post from Cambridge Day, it looks like Whitney's in Harvard Square will be closing on December 31, with the closure apparently stemming from a dispute between the bar owner and the landlord, with the former saying that they are being kicked out for daytime noise levels/noise from music while the latter is saying it is because of nonpayment of rent. Whitney's has been in business since 1953, being a place frequented by locals for beer, liquor, wings, and darts.

The address for Whitney's is 37 JFK Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138. Its website can be found at https://whitneysofharvardsquare.com/

Brick & Mortar in Cambridge's Central Square to Become Acqua & Bocca

The people behind a cocktail lounge in Cambridge are going to be replacing it with an Italian bar.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Brick & Mortar in Central Square will become Acqua & Bocca in the early part of 2025, with owners Avery Appleton and Gary Strack planning to offer a simple food menu that will include such items as pizza and pasta dishes while the beverage program will "be more of an evolution" of Brick & Mortar with Italian influences.

Brick & Mortar first opened 13 years ago in its upstairs space, while a farm-to-table restaurant under the same ownership called Central Kitchen had been downstairs from 2000 to 2020.

The address for the upcoming Acqua & Bocca (and Brick & Mortar) is 567 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

Lord Hobo in Cambridge Is Gone; Space May Go Through a Rebrand But Appears Nameless for Now

A beer bar in Cambridge that helped launch one of the biggest beer brands in the local area is no more, and what's left is a bar that doesn't appear to have a name, at least for the time being.

According to a source from a few weeks back, Lord Hobo on Hampshire Street between Kendall Square and Inman Square is no longer called Lord Hobo, with signs gone and no new name apparently given for the place. A check on the space has confirmed this, and an article by beer writer Andy Crouch within the All About Beer website gets into details about how founder Daniel Lanigan no longer has ownership in Lord Hobo Brewing  anymore, though he has continued to co-own and run the Cambridge beer bar. In the article, Lord Hobo Brewing board member Simon Thorpe says that "Daniel is not involved anymore and hasn't been for some years now....He's no longer an owner and hasn't had an equity stake for the best part of two years." The article also mentions that Lord Hobo Brewing marketing director Aubree Karls said in a Reddit post that "I work for Lord Hobo Brewing Company and would like to clarify some confusion around [the Cambridge beer bar]. In 2023 we terminated our license of the Lord Hobo name at the Cambridge location, which is not owned and never been owned by Lord Hobo Brewing. We have not had a relationship with Cambridge since then, and we have repeatedly asked the operator to remove any signage or association with Lord Hobo."

The Lord Hobo beer bar first opened in Cambridge 2010, with Lord Hobo Brewery debuting in Woburn in 2015 and being joined by another location in Boston's Seaport District in 2020.

Ave. that had been home to Mary Chung until closing at the end of 2022. The email address within the job post belongs to Brian Callahan, who has worked at such spots as Row 34, Orfano, Tiger Mama, Coquette, and Grafton Street while the listing says that the place will offer "Dim Sum influenced small plates" along with cocktails. If all goes as planned, Darling will open later this year.

The address for the upcoming Darling is 464 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

The Dial and the Blue Owl at 907 Main in Cambridge's Central Square Have Closed; Future of Places Unknown

A restaurant and a bar in Cambridge that are located on the ground floor and the top floor of a boutique hotel are closed for now, and it isn't known what may become of either of them.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Dial at 907 Main Central Square is shuttered for at least the time being with a note on both its website and the website for the Blue Owl saying that they will be "closed for the winter of 2024" while also saying "big things coming soon!" As soon as we find out more, including whether one or more new concepts may be coming to the spaces or whether The Dial and/or the Blue Owl could open back up, we will post an update here, so stay tuned.

The Dial first opened in 2020 while the Blue Owl debuted in the following year; the website for the former is at https://www.thedialcentralsq.com/ while the website for the latter is at https://www.blueowlcentralsq.com/

According to multiple sources, the closing of The Dial and the Blue Owl appear to be permanent, with an Instagram post from The Dial seeming to confirm this, saying the following: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the permanent closing of The Dial and The Blue Owl. We thank you all for being part of The Dial and Blue Owl community and a part of the diverse neighborhood that gives Central Square it's unique energy. Together we celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, pride months and return to office cocktails; whatever the occasion we were grateful that you chose to spend it here with us."]

No address has been given for the new location of Flat Top Johnny's, nor is it known when it might reopen, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

A decades-old Cambridge watering hole that is known for its pizza is saying farewell.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, Newtowne Grille in the city's Porter Square area is closing its doors this weekend, with Saturday expected to be its last day in business. The Kinsale and The Asgard Have Closed Permanently

A few months ago, it appeared that two of the most popular Irish pubs in the Boston area might open back up this fall after being closed due to the pandemic. Now we have learned that this won't be happening.

According to a press release, The Kinsale in downtown Boston and The Asgard in Cambridge's Central Square will not be reopening, as they have both shut down for good. The release explains the decision, saying the following:

With the pandemic ongoing, office buildings at low occupancy, chronic labor shortages, challenging governmental directives and an uncertain economy, the decision has been made to permanently close popular Irish pubs The Kinsale and The Asgard. Both establishments were shuttered in March 2020 as part of the COVID-19 lockdown. In September 2020 an attempt was made to reopen, but with office buildings largely empty it proved unfeasible and the pubs ceased operations after four weeks. While the intention was always to reopen, the timeframe proved to be too daunting. Weeks turned to months, and the months dragged on. Both establishments were lucky enough to have cooperative landlords, but in the end even that, and PPP assistance, were not enough. “A huge part of our customer base is office workers. They went home last March, and they haven’t come back -- at least to the extent that it’s feasible to run a business,” said Peter Sarmanian, President of Classic Restaurant Concepts, LLC.

The Kinsale first opened in 1998 while The Asgard debuted in 2001, with both pubs being designed in Ireland.

New Republik Bar Is Opening in The Rising Space in Cambridge's Inman Square

A new dining and drinking spot appears to be opening in Cambridge, and it has a connection to a beloved bar that announced its closure earlier this year.

According to a source, the New Republik Bar is planning to open in the space in Inman Square that had been home to The Rising, with an Instagram page for the place hinting that people involved with the now-closed People's Republik are behind it, saying that "The Republik will rise again!" Our source sent us photos showing a sign up for the New Republik in the window of the Cambridge Street space, which jibes with what we have been hearing over the past few months, that people from The People's Republik--which had been located on Mass. Ave. on the outskirts of Central Square--were eyeing the space for a potential return of the bar in some form. (As soon as we find out more information about the New Republik, we will post an update here.)

The Rising was an Irish gastropub that first opened in early 2016.

The address for New Republik Bar is 1172 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

[September 30 update: An article from boston.com indicates that former People's Republik manager Patrick Gallivan and co-worker Maxwell Greene are behind the New Republik Bar, with Gallivan saying that "It'll have a lot of the same feel — mostly the same staff, a lot of the same artwork, but we're in a nicer building with nicer bathrooms. Everything's just going to be a little bit nicer." The article says that the menu will be similar to that of The People's Republik, though with a few healthier options, and that live music is not expected to be part of the plans. If all goes well, the new place could open in mid-November.]

[January 15, 2022 update: According to a source who told us last night, the New Republik Bar plans to open in February, with an Instagram post from the business indicating that it could be opening February 1.]

ManRay Plans to Open in Former ImprovBoston Space in Cambridge's Central Square

Nearly ten years ago, it was reported that a legendary nightclub could be coming back to Cambridge, and now we have learned that it finally appears to be happening.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, ManRay is planning to open in the old ImprovBoston comedy club space on Prospect Street in Central Square (the Improv is now doing shows at The Starlight Square stage in Central Square and The Rockwell in Somerville's Davis Square), with the space currently being under construction--and an alcohol pouring license was awarded for ManRay this week. The post says that if all goes as planned, ManRay could debut in the middle of October.

Back in early 2013, we had mentioned here that ManRay was eyeing the old Blockbuster space on Mass. Ave., and that the new version of the club would be much smaller than the original while serving food as well as drinks, though these plans ultimately fell through. The club first opened in 1985, being an "underground" place that featured goth and new wave bands. (It closed down in the summer of 2005.)

The address for the upcoming ManRay is 40 Prospect Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

Paddy's Lunch in Cambridge to Host Pigpen's BBQ Popup

A neighborhood dive bar in Cambridge that has been serving drinks to locals for nearly 90 years will be serving food (at least for today) as well.

A message sent by Leah Klein of City Living Boston indicates that Paddy's Lunch on Walden Street will be hosting a popup starting at 4:00 PM featuring Pigpen's BBQ, with a Facebook events page indicating that pulled pork and brisket sandwiches will be offered until they run out. Paddy's, which first opened back in 1934, has been known over the years as a place to get a drink but has rarely offered food; whether popups will continue to bring the addition of food to the bar on at least a semi-regular basis is not known just yet, so stay tuned for updates.
