Chef Mike's in Needham Is Rebranding, Focusing on Catering; Future of Restaurant Unknown

An Italian restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston is gone--at least for now--as the business is undergoing a rebranding.

A Facebook post from owner Mike Fucci indicates that with his current focus being on catering due to Covid (which Fucci says "decimated" his business), he will rebrand Chef Mike's, saying that "the name...is going to disappear" and that "we don't know what's happening with the restaurant; I may reopen the restaurant at some point but right now as it stands, catering seems like the smartest thing for me." Chef Mike's--which is currently called Chef Mike's Catering--first opened in August of 2019 on Highland Avenue, approximately a half year before the pandemic took hold.

The address for the Chef Mike's space is 73 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA, 02494. The current website for Chef Mike's Catering can be found at https://www.eatatchefmikes.com/

Casa Razdora to Open in Former Crumbs Space in Boston's Financial District

It looks like an Italian restaurant in downtown Boston that was once featured on a popular food show is opening a new location in the heart of the city, and this one could have a slightly different focus.

According to a Twitter post from @thompspicks, Casa Razdora is planning to open on Federal Street, with another source (Geoff Wong) sending a photo that shows a sign out front for the eatery. The sign mentions that the new location will offer takeout and catering, though it is not yet known if it will also have seating like that of the original location on Water Street or if it will strictly be takeout. The original Casa Razdora gained national recognition in 2014 when Guy Fieri visited the place for "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," which showed approximately two years after the place first opened in the former Sam & Anne's Deli space.

The upcoming location of Casa Razdora on Federal Street had once been home to Crumbs, a chain of cupcake shops that closed all of its stores in 2014 only to reopen some outlets--including the Boston shop--before closing for good in 2017.

The address for the new location of Casa Razdora is 176 Federal Street, Boston, MA, 02110. The website for the Water Street location can be found at http://www.casarazdora.com/

[August 15 update: A licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website indicates that the new location of Casa Razdora could be one step closer to opening by next week, as a hearing is expected to take place on its application for a common victualler license on Wednesday, August 21.]

CLC Cafe Opens in Former Kitchen on Common Space in Belmont

An award-winning caterer has opened a new restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston, and it will take over the space where an upscale dining spot had been.

According to an article in the Belmont Citizen-Herald, Rob Pelletier has soft-opened CLC Cafe in Belmont's Cushing Square, with the eatery moving into the former Kitchen on Common space on Common Street. The post says that Pelletier's roommate Michael Gattis will be overseeing the cafe itself (which has a seasonal patio in addition to indoor seating) while Pelletier will continue to manage CLC Catered Events, which was established more than 25 years ago and mentions on its website that Pelletier is a "multiple award-winning caterer." It looks like CLC Cafe will offer an eclectic and always-changing mix of menu items, including takeout options for people on the go. While soft-opened for now, expect a grand opening for the place sometime this fall.

Kitchen on Common closed approximately a year ago after being in business for just under 10 years; the restaurant was a casual, family-friendly spot that featured mostly New American fare.

The address for this new restaurant in Belmont is: CLC Cafe, 442 Common St, Belmont, MA, 02478. The website for CLC Catered Events can be found at http://www.clccateredevents.com/ while the Facebook page for the cafe is at https://www.facebook.com/clccafe/

Laurie's 9:09 Restaurant in Wakefield Has Closed; Catering Operation to Continue

A restaurant and caterer in the northern suburbs of Boston has closed the restaurant end of the business, and it is now going to be focusing exclusively on catering.

According to a note on constantcontact.com, Laurie's 9:09 restaurant shut down for good on New Year's Eve, and the business is now getting ready to move from its old home on Tuttle Street to a new space on New Salem Street where it will operate a catering facility. An earlier Facebook post from the place indicated that owner Laurie Rizzo had major foot surgery in July of 2016, and with the recovery being slower than expected, the decision was made to make the shift from restaurant operation to catering.

Laurie's 9:09, which first opened in the fall of 2012, was an upscale neighborhood spot that focused on steak, seafood, and a mix of New American and traditional American fare.

The address for Laurie's 9:09 restaurant was 33 Tuttle Street, while the new address for the catering operation is 93 New Salem Street.

Comella's to Open in Bedford Marketplace

A local group of Italian eateries and caterers is opening yet another new shop, and this one will be going into a renovated shopping center that was vacated by another Italian dining spot last year.

According to a post with the Bedford-Business blog, Comella's is planning to open within the Bedford Marketplace this spring, and unlike their other shops that tend to focus on takeout, this location will have a full-service dining area and a bar (along with another section for counter service and takeout), with seating for nearly 100. This is the second new location of Comella's to be announced of late, as another one is coming to the former Salsa's space in Hingham as well. (Currently, locations of Comella's can be found in Arlington, Belmont, Chestnut Hill, Concord, Marblehead, Melrose, Natick, Needham, Wellesley, West Newton, West Roxbury, and Westwood.)

In the summer of 2015, we reported that Cafe Luigi had temporarily closed in the shopping center in anticipation of a move to a new building there, but the plans apparently fell through in the fall and now Luigi's is planning to move to a new home (it has not yet announced where the new location will be). The restaurant had been in the shopping center for nearly 30 years.

The website for Comella's can be found at http://www.comellasrestaurants.com/
