A local chain of family-friendly restaurants is closing one of its locations north of Boston.

A tweet posted by @angem25 yesterday mentioned that there had apparently been chatter about the 99 Restaurant & Pub in Saugus shutting down, with Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting replying in the Twitter thread that a call placed to the Route 1 spot confirms that Saturday appears to be its last night in operation. No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known what might take over the space; as soon as we hear more, we will post an update here.

A new location of the 99 Restaurant & Pub is (as mentioned here earlier) getting ready to open not too far away from the Saugus location, with that one coming to Route 114 in Middleton.

The Saugus Building That Used to House Victor's Italian Cuisine, Maddy's, and the Blue Star Has Been Demolished

A structure in Saugus that has been home to a few restaurants/bars over the years has been torn down.

According to an article from the Saugus Advertiser and Wicked Local, the structure at 1639 Broadway (where Routes 1 and 99 meet) was demolished yesterday, with the post indicating that it was due to an "emergency situation." In the article, Town Engineer Todd Baldwin said that a water main break took place there last week and the water was shut off at the curb, so "Due to the fact it didn't have functioning sprinklers, it was deemed to be an emergency and to have the building demolished." The building, which has been boarded up for awhile, had been home to Victor's Italian Cuisine, Maddy's, and the Blue Star, and as reported here earlier, it looked like it was already headed toward demolition, as the parcel was proposed to become home to an Italian steakhouse (the Saugus Advertiser also says that two apartment buildings are proposed for the space, with one of them including the steakhouse).

Victor's Italian Cuisine in Saugus Is Planning to Move Back to Its Old Space

An Italian restaurant on Route 1 that moved to a new location only to close down could be coming back, and it may be taking over its old location once again.

According to an article from the Saugus Advertiser and Wicked Local, Victor's Italian Cuisine is hoping to return to 1539 Broadway after shutting down its location at 1639 Broadway last spring. The post mentions that current owner Frank Perry is seeking a common victualler license for the old space, which would also expand into the Sprint building next door. Vincent Valente had moved Victor's from its old space to the former Maddy's site a bit less than three years ago, but it shuttered sometime last May or June. (The article says that Perry and Valente were business partners, with Perry buying Valente out.)

Big Pig BBQ Opens in Peabody

A catering company has opened a brand new restaurant on the North Shore.

According to a tweet from @CappyinBoston, Big Pig BBQ is now open in Peabody, with a Facebook post from the place showing that the Route 1 eatery is indeed up and running, offering such items as pulled pork, brisket, ribs, BBQ chicken, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, baked beans, and more. The business, which started out in 2008, has been a caterer for weddings, parties, corporate events, and more, and based on its website and social media, it looks like the catering will continue.

As reported earlier here, Big Pig BBQ had been looking to open a restaurant, market, deli, and catering space in Chelsea, but those plans apparently fell through.

An Italian Steakhouse May Open in Former Victor's Italian Cuisine Space in Saugus

It looks like a new restaurant may be opening in Saugus where an Italian dining spot had been, and it will apparently have at least a loose ownership connection to a legendary restaurant nearby.

According to an article from the Saugus Advertiser, an as-of-yet unnamed Italian steakhouse is being planned for the former Victor's Italian Cuisine space on Route 1, with the list of partners including Stanley Wong, who is one of the owners of Kowloon, along with John Carlino, Joseph Bono, and Robert Wong, the last one whom may be one of the owners of Kowloon as well. (The family behind Kowloon includes Robert Wong, and the article does say that "the Wong family" is involved.) If all goes as planned, the new restaurant could be opening in the spring of 2020.

Victor's Italian Cuisine shut down this spring after being in business in this location for a couple of years; it had previously been in another space a short distance away on Route 1.

The address for the upcoming Italian steakhouse in Saugus is 1639 Broadway (Route 1), Saugus, MA, 01906.

[January 15, 2021 update: A new article from the Saugus Advertiser indicates that plans for an Italian steakhouse are still in the works for the former Victor's space, with a subdivision being proposed for the site that would include the restaurant (and possibly a rooftop bar) in one lot while it isn't yet known what would be in a second lot.]

Victor's Italian Cuisine in Saugus Has Closed

An Italian restaurant in Saugus that moved to a new location a couple of years ago has shut down.

According to a couple of sources, Victor's Italian Cuisine at the Route 1/99 fork is no longer in business, with a check on its website indicating that its account has been suspended. The dining spot had been located at 1539 Broadway until 2016 when it closed in order to get ready to move to the former Maddy's space at 1639 Broadway, where it reopened in March of 2017

A restaurant called Sebastiana's had been looking to open in the old Victor's space but those plans apparently did not end up working out.

King Crab Juicy Seafood to Open in Saugus

Another restaurant featuring Cajun seafood may be on its way to the Boston area, with this one being just off a busy stretch of Route 1.

The Saugus Advertiser is reporting that King Crab Juicy Seafood is planning to open within the plaza on Main Street that is home to Buffalo Wild Wings and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The article mentions that the dining spot--which could have seating for as many as 160 people--will focus on "Cajun-style seafood boil" dishes including such items as lobster, clams, shrimp, crab, catfish, tilapia, crawfish, oysters, shrimp, and mussels. If all goes as planned, King Grab Juicy Seafood could be opening in July.

Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus to Set Up Outdoor Area with Tiki Theme

Last year, a landmark restaurant on Route 1 in Saugus added a new feature to the place--outdoor dining--and now it will be doing the same, but with more of a connection to its interior.

According to an article in the Saugus Advertiser, Kowloon Restaurant has gotten approval by the Saugus Board of Selectmen to set up an outdoor area that includes four Tiki huts along with a 10-seat Tiki bar and with a total seating capacity of 106. This setup will be different from last year, which was basically a simple outside tent with seating, and this year's plans also include "island-style" live music. No opening date has been given as of yet for Kowloon's outdoor area, so keep checking back for updates.

Kowloon, which first opened in 1950, is considered to be one of the top-grossing independent restaurants in New England.

The address for Kowloon is 948 Broadway (Route 1), Saugus, MA, 01906. Its website is at https://www.kowloonrestaurant.com/

[June 19 update: A comment within Kowloon's Facebook page indicates that the outdoor tiki bar should be opening this week.]
