Cusser's Roast Beef & Seafood at Hub Hall Is Closing; Time Out Location Remains in Operation

A pair of dining spots known in part for their North Shore-style roast beef sandwiches and their lobster rolls will soon be down to one.

According to an email sent to us, Cusser's Roast Beef & Seafood at Hub Hall by North Station and TD Garden is closing down at the end of business hours tomorrow, though we have been told that the location at Time Out Market Boston in the Fenway will remain open for business, and that it "has actually gotten a major menu facelift." The Hub Hall location of Cusser's debuted in 2021, a couple of years after the Time Out location opened; the original Cusser's first opened at the Mooncusser Fish House site on Stuart Street in the Back Bay in 2018, replacing Moon Bar which took back the space in 2023.

The website for Cusser's can be found at https://www.cussersboston.com/

Lobstah on a Roll in Boston's South End Has Closed

It looks like the original location of a restaurant known in part for its oversized lobster rolls has shut down.

According to a poster within the South End Community Board Facebook group page, Lobstah on a Roll in Boston's South End is no longer in business, with a "for lease" sign apparently up on the building and the website for the business removing the Columbus Avenue location, while the phone for the place no longer is in operation. The Newbury Street outlet in the Back Bay is still open and is one of two remaining (the other being in St. Augustine, FL), as the Salem location no longer exists and one that was being planned for Arlington never came to fruition.

Lobstah on a Roll first opened in the old Emma's space in the South End in the fall of 2017, featuring different sizes of lobster rolls, including one nearly two feet long.

The address for the now-closed South End location of Lobstah On a Roll was 537 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA, 02118. The website for the Back Bay location is at https://www.lobstahonaroll.com/

Lobstah on a Roll Is Replacing Wabora Asian Fusion Bistro in Boston's Back Bay

A pair of Boston-area restaurants known for their huge lobster rolls is expanding to the Back Bay, and it could be taking over the space where a sushi spot currently resides.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Wabora Asian Fusion Bistro has petitioned to change over to Lobstah on a Roll, with the notice indicating that the latter would indeed be taking over the space of the former. The listing gives little other information, though it does mention that a beer and wine license is involved, so it appears that the liquor license would be going to Lobstah on a Roll. If approved, this would be the third location of the dining spot, with others being in Boston's South End and in Salem.

Wabora first opened in June of 2015, taking over the space where Ikura Sushi had been; the restaurant has a connection to another spot with the same name in Ontario.

The address for the new location of Lobstah on a Roll (and Wabora) is 254 Newbury Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

[October 18 update: Eater Boston states that Lobstah on a Roll is now open on Newbury Street.]

Waterfront and the Oyster Bar to Open at Encore Boston Harbor in Everett

A couple more dining options have been announced for the casino complex in Everett, and the chef at one of Boston's best-known restaurants will be involved with both.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, Waterfront and the Oyster Bar are opening next to each other at Encore Boston Harbor resort and casino, with both places focusing on seafood. The former will be a restaurant with "shareable, dressed-up pub food" including lobster rolls, fried oysters, and spiced pork rinds as well as craft beers, local spirits, and cocktails, while the latter will be a small space with a counter, offering a variety of shellfish along with chowders, ceviches, crudos, mini-lobster rolls, and beer and wine. The person heading up the kitchen at each place will be John Ross of Neptune Oyster, a North End restaurant that is famous for its lobster rolls.

If all goes as planned, Waterfront and the Oyster Bar could be opening late next month, as Encore Boston Harbor hopes to open on June 23.

Plans for Lobstah On a Roll/478 Mass. Ave. to Come to Arlington Have Fallen Through

by Marc Hurwitz

One day after announcing that a restaurant known for its enormous lobster rolls was expanding to the North Shore, we have learned that a planned dining spot in the northwest suburbs under the same ownership will not be happening after all.

According to a Twitter post from @dancallahan, the people behind Lobstah on a Roll in Boston will not be opening a new restaurant in Arlington that was either to be called Lobstah On a Roll or 478 Mass. Ave., with a message sent to us by the place confirming that plans have indeed fallen through. As reported yesterday, a location of Lobstah On a Roll will be coming to Salem, with that eatery possibly debuting sometime in March or April.

Plans for Lobstah On a Roll/478 Mass. Ave. to come to Arlington first came about in September of 2017, with the restaurant looking to open in the old Elton's Roast Beef & Pizza space in the center of town. It was never known for sure what the exact name would be (and it was once billing itself as "the biggest little restaurant in America"), as we heard reports of it being 478 Mass. Ave., then Lobstah On a Roll, then 478 Mass. Ave. once again. (A location of Lobstah On a Roll did open in Boston's South End in November of 2017, with that spot featuring soups, sandwiches, and three sizes of lobster rolls, including one that is nearly two feet long.)

Lobstah on a Roll Is Opening in Salem

by Marc Hurwitz

A Boston eatery that specializes in huge lobster rolls will be expanding to the North Shore.

According to a poster on The Arlington List Facebook group page, Lobstah on a Roll is planning to open in Salem, joining its original location on Columbus Avenue in the South End. No address has been given as of yet, and a Facebook post from the place only mentions when it may open--with the post stating both a March and an April opening date; as soon as we find out more about the place, we will post an update here.

Lobstah on a Roll opened in the old Emma's space in the South End in the fall of 2017, featuring soups, sandwiches, and three sizes of lobster rolls, including one that is nearly two feet long. Another restaurant under the same ownership--which will either be called Lobstah On a Roll or 478 Mass. Ave.--is supposed to be coming to Arlington as well, though those plans have been in the works for approximately a year and a half.

[February 15 update: According to a source, the upcoming Salem location of Lobstah On a Roll will open at 135 Lafayette Street, which is the former Jimmy John's space.]

[March 13 update: A message from the place indicates that Lobstah On a Roll hopes to open in Salem in the next couple of weeks.]

[April 3 update: Eater Boston states that Lobstah On a Roll is now open in Salem.]

Lobstah on a Roll Is Opening in Emma's Space in Boston's South End

by Marc Hurwitz

An upcoming Arlington restaurant that calls itself the "biggest little restaurant in America" will be opening another location as well, taking over a space in Boston where a pizza spot had been.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Lobstah on a Roll is planning to open in the South End, moving into the space on Columbus Avenue where Emma's was until it closed late this summer. Based on a Facebook post from the eatery, the South End location may offer such items as lobster rolls, lobster dinners, "crafted" sandwiches, and more.

Last month we reported that a location of Lobstah on a Roll was on its way to Mass. Ave. in Arlington Center where Elton's Roast Beef & Pizza used to be; it is not yet known whether the Arlington location or the South End location will open first, so stay tuned. (EB says that the one in Arlington could be opening in November.)

The address for the new location of Lobstah on a Roll in the South End is 537 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA, 02118.

[November 6 update: Eater Boston mentions that Lobstah on a Roll is now open in the South End, offering offers soups, salads, and sandwiches, including a five-foot-long lobster roll.]

Bennett's Sandwich Shop Is Opening in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood

A Maine institution that is known in part for its lobster rolls is on its way to Boston.

A licensing board page within the city's website indicates that Bennett's Sandwich Shop is planning to open in the Fenway, taking over the space on Peterborough Street where Swish Shabu had been until closing last November. Based on the name of the manager listed (Brendin McCord) and a note on its website, this is the same Bennett's that is located in Kennebunk, ME, along with a second location in Portsmouth, NH; the Kennebunk shop is a legendary place frequented by countless beachgoers and visitors to nearby Kennebunkport for its lobster rolls and other subs/sandwiches.

The original location of Bennett's first opened in Kennebunk in 1982, while the Portsmouth location opened in 2015.

The address for this new dining spot in the Fenway is: Bennett's Sandwich Shop, 84 Peterborough Street, Boston, MA, 02215. The website for the original location can be found at http://www.bennetts-store.com/

[July 10 update: Eater Boston states that Bennett's Sandwich Shop is now open in the Fenway.]

News Elsewhere: NYC's Pearl Oyster Bar to Open in Kennebunk, ME

A popular "upscale lobster shack" in New York City is expanding to Southern Maine, and it is a homecoming of sorts for the restaurant's owner.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Rebecca Charles of Pearl Oyster Bar in the West Village of Manhattan is opening another location of the dining spot in Kennebunk, ME, which is where her family has summered for many decades and where she worked at the landmark White Barn Inn as executive chef in the 1980s, according to Pearl's website. It is not yet known where in Kennebunk the new location of Pearl will be, nor is it known when it might open; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Pearl Oyster Bar, which is known in part for its lobster rolls, has received much praise since opening in 1997, with the eatery being picked as a semifinalist for the 2014 James Beard Foundation Awards for outstanding restaurant. Another page within the restaurant's site shows that the eatery has also gotten recognition from Gourmet Magazine, Bon Appetit, and the Washington Post, and celebrity chef and restaurateur Mario Batali is quoted as calling it "...my favorite lunch spot on the planet..."

The address for the original Pearl Oyster Bar in the West Village is 18 Cornelia Street, New York, NY, 10014.

Alive and Kicking Lobsters in Cambridge Facing Zoning Issue

A tiny seafood spot in Cambridge that has gained national recognition appears to be facing an uncertain future.

According to a petition that has been circulating over the past few days, Louis Mastrangelo of Alive and Kicking Lobsters "is in jeopardy of having his business of 20 years shut down due to a zoning issue," with the petition seeking 2,000 signatures in support of the Putnam Avenue eatery. The exact zoning issue is not mentioned in the petition, but talks between people involved with the Cambridge city government last night indicate that at least one city councilor has been looking into the issue and that others are aware of a possible conflict.

Alive and Kicking Lobsters, which first started out approximately 20 years ago, is a dining spot buried away in a residential part of Cambridgeport that has been featured in an episode of the Travel Channel's "Man Finds Food" and has also been noted by Zagat as having one of the best lobster rolls in Boston. (The lobster roll is actually more of a lobster sandwich and is perhaps the dining spot's signature item.)

The address for Alive and Kicking Lobsters is 269 Putnam Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Its website can be found at http://aliveandkickinglobsters.com/

[August 11 update: A message from @PatrickMBoston of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting confirms that Alive and Kicking Lobsters is indeed in the middle of a zoning dispute with a neighbor; specific information about the issue will likely be on the way soon, so keep checking back for more updates.]

[August 12 update: Based on a comment on the petition page, at least two city councilors (Leland Cheung and Marc McGovern) are now looking into the zoning issue at Alive and Kicking Lobsters. In addition, another comment goes along with what we heard--that a neighbor reportedly filed a zoning complaint after she asked Alive and Kicking for a easement through its property, which the eatery did not grant. (Her side of the story has not been heard as of yet.)]

[August 12 update: #2: More information is now out from Eater Boston--according to Sarah Smith, who is the owner of the adjacent Cambridge Bed and Muffin (a bed-and-breakfast), she made the decision earlier this summer to ask for Alive and Kicking's zoning to be enforced in writing after making what appears to be a similar inquiry last year, with nothing reportedly coming from that. Cambridge Inspectional Services commissioner Ranjit Singanayagam also says that Alive and Kicking "started this business without approval from the city," and with the formal complaint given to them from Smith, the office has now put out a cease and desist order that the owner of the dining spot is allowed to appeal.]

[September 21 update: More should be known about the future of Alive and Kicking Lobsters this week, as a Twitter post from the place states that "There is a public hearing this Thursday in Cambridge, that will basically decide our fate." (This has been confirmed by the city's website.)]

[October 6 update: A check on the place indicates that Alive and Kicking remains open, though we are still trying to find out (via the city of Cambridge) what the status of the zoning issue is; as soon as we learn more, we will post another update here.]

[November 23 update: A Chowhound poster states (via a Twitter post) that the Cambridge Board of Zoning Appeal is continuing the Alive and Kicking case until December 10, and that the board might grant--with conditions--a land use variance that would allow the place to remain open.]

Luke's Lobster Is Opening in Boston's Back Bay

Several months ago, we reported that a New York-based group of eateries featuring lobster rolls was apparently looking into expanding to Boston. Now we have learned that at least one location will indeed be coming to the city.

According to a Twitter post from Donna Goodison of The Boston Herald, Luke's Lobster is looking to open within the Avalon Exeter apartment tower on Exeter Street in the Back Bay, confirming earlier expansion plans that include New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and possibly Chicago. Luke Holden, a former lobsterman and Maine resident, first started the group of lobster shacks in New York's East Village in 2009 with his father along with business partner Ben Conniff; a total of 12 locations are now in operation, as well as a food truck.

[December 31 update: Donna Goodison tells us that according to a zoning board of appeal notice in the Herald from AvalonBay Communities, the owner of the Avalon Exeter apartment tower is petitioning to open Luke's Lobster within the building, so while it is not yet a done deal, it is indeed in the works.]

[June 1, 2015 update: BostInno states that Luke's Lobster is indeed planning to come the Avalon Exeter tower, with the restaurant looking to open in the middle of July. The article says that the new eatery would be a casual seafood shack that gets its lobster from Maine, and in addition to lobster rolls, there will also be chowder and bisque along with crab rolls, shrimp rolls, and more.]

[June 19, 2015 update: A City of Boston Licensing Board page indicates that the Back Bay location of Luke's Lobster could be one step closer to reality next week; it has applied for a common victualler license, with the hearing taking place on Wednesday, June 24.]

[July 15, 2015 update: According to a note from Hub Food Trucks, Luke's Lobster opens its new Back Bay shop on Friday (July 17).]

The address for the new Luke's Lobster in the Back Bay will be 75 Exeter Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for the group of lobster shacks can be found at http://www.lukeslobster.com/

Luke's Lobster to Be at Boston's Head of the Charles Regatta

A New York-based group of lobster shacks that gets its lobsters from Maine will be coming to Boston in a few days, setting up shop at one of the city's most popular events.

An email sent to us from Luke's Lobster indicates that they will be at the Head of the Charles regatta this weekend, dishing out lobster rolls as well as shrimp and crab rolls from a tent set up at the event. Luke's will also offer chowder that will come from Maine partner Hurricane's Premium Soup and Chowder, which was awarded second place in Newport's Great Chowder Cookoff this year.

Former lobsterman and Maine resident Luke Holden--along with his father Jeff Holden and business partner Ben Conniff--established Luke's Lobster in the East Village of New York in the fall of 2009, and now has shops in the Upper West Side, Financial District, and the Plaza Food Hall in Midtown Manhattan, along with locations in Washington, DC (2), and Bethesda, MD. (Luke's also has a food truck in New York as well.) The website for Luke's Lobster can be found at http://www.lukeslobster.com/

Lobsta Love Food Truck Opening at Harvard University in Cambridge

A new food truck is on its way to the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, and it will be featuring lobster rolls.

According to Boston Magazine's Chowder blog, Lobsta Love is getting ready to open in front of the Science Center, with the chance of it being up and running today, but if not, definitely tomorrow. The Chowder article states that Lobsta Love will offer a couple of different lobster rolls in various sizes--a classic roll with mayo and an Asian-influenced lobster roll--as well as clam chowder, lobster bisque, and lobster macaroni and cheese. The Chowder blog also mentions that Food Truck Nation is behind Lobsta Love, and that this will actually be the second Food Truck Nation truck to come to Harvard, with Grilled Cheese Nation also being on campus.

[October 6 update: According to a poster on the Chowhound site, Lobsta Love is now open.]
