Bar Mezzana Team Opening Shore Leave (a New Tiki Bar) in Boston's Ink Block Area

by Marc Hurwitz

The group behind an Italian restaurant within a new development in Boston's South End will be opening a brand new spot across the street.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Colin Lynch, Heather Lynch, Jefferson Macklin, and Ryan Lotz of Bar Mezzana on Harrison Avenue in the Ink Block are planning to open Shore Leave, which will be a tiki bar and restaurant that is currently in design mode and could be opening later this year if all goes as planned. Very little information has been given on the upcoming spot, so stay tuned as more details start to come in.

Bar Mezzana first opened in the Ink Block in June of 2016, with the dining and drinking spot featuring coastal Italian fare.

The address for Shore Leave will be 345 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA, 02118. Its website will be at https://www.shoreleaveboston.com/

[April 27 update: A licensing board hearing page indicates that Shore Leave is hoping to get its liquor license from The Gate (which is now closed) in Jamaica Plain, and the notice says that the place plans to have two bars within its space. The hearing is scheduled to take place on May 2.]

[November 16 update: Boston Magazine states that Shore Leave plans to open by early next week.]

[November 18 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that Shore Leave has softly opened, with its official opening taking place tomorrow (Monday, November 19) at 5:00 PM.]

Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go and Tiki Rock Bar Opening Where The Place Had Been in Downtown Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

A ramen place and a cocktail bar are sharing a space in downtown Boston where a nightclub had once been.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go and Tiki Rock Bar are both opening on Broad Street, taking over the space where The Place was until it shut down a couple of years ago.The post says that the 12-seat ramen spot will be run by Moe Kuroki, who is behind a popup with the Oisa Ramen name, while Christopher Straub, who has worked in a variety of jobs at the Hyatt hotels, is behind the Tiki Rock Bar, a spot that will feature craft cocktails along with pan-Asian street food, sushi, and more. If all goes as planned, Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go could be opening in November. (It is not yet known when Tiki Rock Bar might open.)

Early last year, it appeared that a place called Sushi Rock might take over the space where The Place had been, though that apparently fell through.

The address for Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go and Tiki Rock Bar is 2 Broad Street, Boston, MA, 02109.

[December 12 update: Eater Boston mentions that Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go will initially be open for lunch only when it debuts, though evening options such as multi-course dinners with drink pairings or the hosting of pop-ups will be offered as well at some point.]

[December 28 update: The Improper Bostonian states that Oisa Ramen is slated to open sometime in January.]

[January 8, 2018 update: An update within the earlier Boston Magazine article says that Oisa Ramen Slurp & Go plans to open a week from today (Monday, January 15).]

[January 11, 2018 update: Eater Boston says that Tiki Rock Bar is now open and that it offers sushi, pu pu platters, ginger soy fried chicken, Polynesian-style cocktails, and more.]

Barefoot Bob's Beach Grill in Hull Has Closed

It looks like a beachside dining and drinking spot that included an outdoor tiki bar has shut its doors.

A check on the place a few days ago indicated that Barefoot Bob's Beach Grill on Nantasket Beach in Hull was locked up and dark, with a call placed to the Nantasket Avenue restaurant and bar indicating that its phone is out of service. Both Google and Yelp say that it has permanently closed, as well as a poster on a Groupon page (Groupon apparently returned the money to the poster), and its Facebook page is down as well. It is not yet known whether Barefoot Bob's could reopen--or what might be happening to the space--so stay tuned for updates.

Barefoot Bob's was featured on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares in 2012, and it has also been reviewed by our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants), with the review being found at the link below:

http://www.hiddenboston.com/BarefootBobs.html

The address for this now-closed restaurant and bar in Hull was: Barefoot Bob's Beach Grill, 276 Nantasket Avenue, Hull, MA, 02045.

[June 7 update: According to multiple Facebook posts from the place, Hull's Kitchen will be opening a new spot called HK Too in the old Barefoot Bob's space.]

Tiki Hideaway in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood Is Closing

It looks like a bar that has been in the Fenway section of Boston for decades is going to be shutting its doors.

According to a post on its Facebook page, the Tiki Hideaway within the Howard Johnson Inn on Boylston Street is getting ready to close, as the note says that "Unfortunately, the Hotel will be changing owners and will be closing for renovations by year end." It is not yet known whether the Hong Kong Cafe, a Chinese restaurant that is also located within the hotel, will be closing as well.

[December 4 update: A new Facebook post from the spot indicates (via an events page link) that the hotel "as we know it is at the end. Dates not confirmed but probably around the 14th." Still no word on the Hong Kong Cafe, but it appears that it may be closing as well.]

[December 10 update: Based on a new note on its Facebook page, it appears that the Tiki Hideaway will be closing this Friday (November 13).]

[December 13 update: A phone call placed to the hotel confirms that the Tiki Hideaway has officially closed (it will not be open tonight).]

The Tiki Hideaway has been known as a place to go for old-school Polynesian drinks (including scorpion bowls), live music and comedy, with food being offered by the Hong Kong Cafe team. The bar and hotel have been around for a long time, with HoJo's first opening in 1959. (It appears that the bar may have opened around that time as well, based on the Facebook note from the Tiki Hideaway saying that "We will cherish all the great memories from the last 54 years.")

The address for this soon-to-close bar in the Fenway area is: Tiki Hideaway, 1271 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02215.
