PopUp Bagels Is Opening at Assembly Row in Somerville

A few days ago, it was reported that a growing group of bagel shops that started out as a backyard pickup window in Connecticut would be opening another Boston-area location, and now we have learned that yet another is on the way as well.

According to a press release, PopUp Bagels is planning to open in Somerville, moving into the former ARow Express convenience store space on Revolution Drive at Assembly Row. Once it opens, the new shop will join another in Boston's Seaport District, and it will either be the second or third standalone location locally depending on when another one in the works in Cambridge's Harvard Square gets up and running (both the Cambridge and Somerville locations are slated to open later this year).

PopUp Bagels, which started out in Westport in 2020 with founder Adam Goldberg selling bagels out of his house, also sells bagels within Captain Mardens in Wellesley.

Posto Completes Move From Somerville's Davis Square, Opening in New Space at Assembly Row

Earlier this year, it was reported that a restaurant in Somerville known in part for its pizza would be moving to another part of the city, and now we have learned that the move is complete.

According to its social media, Posto is now open at Assembly Row, moving into the space formerly occupied by Frank, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

What a week! Thank you to everyone who came out to wish us farewell from Davis Square, we truly felt the love. And a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to welcome us to @assemblyrow this past weekend! We loved meeting our new neighbors and welcoming old friends to our new home!  If you haven't stopped by yet, we're open nightly and can't wait to see you!

Posto, which first opened in Davis Square in 2009, said goodbye to its Elm Street space on November 17 as it got ready for the move; owner Joe Cassinelli and his Alpine Restaurant Group also run the Painted Burro in Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, and Waltham, and Burro Bar in Boston's South End.

Posto to Move from Somerville's Davis Square to Assembly Row

A restaurant in Somerville that is known in part for its pizza is moving to another section of the city.

According to a press release, Posto in Davis Square is planning to move to Assembly Row, with the new space including a full-service dining area along with a takeout market/cafe, and the place will continue to offer wood-fired pizza along with such options as steak, seafood, and house-made pasta.

Posto first opened on Elm Street in 2009; owner Joe Cassinelli and his Alpine Restaurant Group currently run the Painted Burro in Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, and Waltham, and Burro Bar in Boston's South End.

Civility Social House Plans to Open at Assembly Row in Somerville January 31

About a year ago, it was reported that a new restaurant and bar from a local restaurant group would be coming to a growing development in Somerville, and now we have learned that it is just about ready to open.

According to a press release, Civility Social House is looking to open at Assembly Row for dinner on January 31, with Chris Damian's Legendary Restaurant Group (Papagayo, Sip Wine Bar) being behind it. The release indicates that the new dining and drinking spot will offer both small, shareable plates and full meals with at least part of the focus being on modern takes on pub fare including charcuterie boards, burgers, flatbreads, lollipop chicken thighs, red wine braised short rib, pasta dishes, and more along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

In addition to dinner service, Civility Social House plans to add lunch and brunch service in the coming months as well.

Le Macaron Opens at Assembly Row in Somerville

A Florida-based chain of French patisseries that currently has one New England location has opened its first Boston-area outlet, and it appears that a second location could be coming to the local area as well.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Le Macaron is now open at Assembly Row in Somerville, with its grand opening apparently having taken place over the weekend. The new shop joins another outlet in Windham, NH, and the website for the company mentions that another store may be coming to Cambridge, though no address has been given for that one.

Le Macaron opened their first shop approximately 13 years ago, with the Assembly Row location first being announced in the early part of 2021.

An Nam, Civility Social House, Tatte Bakery & Cafe, Ten One Tea House, Tribos Peri Peri to Open at Assembly Row in Somerville

It looks like several more dining spots will be coming to a growing development in Somerville.

Eater Boston is reporting that Assembly Row will see the opening of at least five more food and beverage places, including An Nam, a Vietnamese eatery that has an ownership connection to local outlets of the Menya Jiro ramen chain along with Saigon Fusion in the Fenway; Civility Social House, a small-plates restaurant and bar from Legendary Restaurant Group (Papagayo, Sip Wine Bar); Tatte Bakery & Cafe, a rapidly-growing local chain; Ten One Tea House, a Taiwanese tea shop with locations in Boston's Back Bay and in Providence, RI; and Tribos Peri Peri, a New Jersey-based chain of restaurants with Portuguese influences.

As mentioned earlier, a few other food options are on their way to Assembly Row as well, including Salt & Stone and an outlet of Union Square Donuts. [Ed Note: Both are now open.]

Union Square Donuts Is Opening at Assembly Row in Somerville

A popular local group of donut shops will be further expanding into the Boston area, with a new one on its way to a development in Somerville.

According to a press release, Union Square Donuts is planning to open at Assembly Row as a part of Phase 3 of development there. Once it opens within the next few months, the new outlet will join others in Somerville's Union Square, Boston Public Market, Time Out Market in the Fenway, and Brookline.

Other new businesses coming to Assembly Row include Vineyard Vines, Sav-Mor Spirits and Juicygreens.

Night Shift Is Opening Owl's Nest Beer Garden at Assembly Row in Somerville

A local brewery with three brick-and-mortar locations and two beer gardens will be opening a third beer garden in a growing development in Somerville.

According to a press release, Night Shift is planning to open a new location of Owl's Nest at Assembly Row, and it will be part of a greenspace that will include pickleball, shuffleboard, and cabanas from PKL Boston while food will be supplied by The Smoke Shop BBQ. The new Owl's Nest will join others at the Esplanade in Boston and Herter Park in Allston as well as locations of Night Shift in Everett, Lovejoy Wharf on the Boston waterfront, and in the Encore Boston Harbor near the Everett/Boston line.

La Cucina Italian Eatery Opens at Somerville's Assembly Row

A long-awaited Italian restaurant has come to Somerville, and as mentioned earlier, the person behind a now-closed North End spot is behind this place.

According to a post from Eater Boston, La Cucina Italian Eatery is now open at Assembly Row, with Jeff Malloy of Carmen running the restaurant which is currently just open for dinner (but will add lunch service in the next couple of weeks or so). Eater mentions that the new eatery honors the automotive history of the Assembly Row area, with pictures of the Ford Edsel displayed along with a vintage Ford logo on the wall, while the space itself has high ceilings, exposed brick, a fireplace, and both a dining area and a bar area along with a semi-open kitchen and a pizza oven. The dinner menu at La Cucina includes such items as roasted marinated olives, sausage soup with kale and potatoes, an antipasto, arancini with braised boar, linguine with clams, lasagna with seafood, rigatoni bolognese, spice crusted tuna, grilled swordfish, and rack of lamb, while drinks include a variety of wines and cocktails.

Carmen resided at North Square in the North End for more than 15 years until closing in the summer of 2016.

American Fresh Beer Garden in Somerville's Assembly Row Has Closed for Good (Again)

A Somerville beer garden that closed for good last fall only to reopen this spring has shut down once again, and it may indeed be a permanent closure this time around.

According to a Facebook post from the place, American Fresh Beer Garden at Assembly Row in Somerville is now shuttered, with co-owner Caitlin Jewell saying "Goodbye #beergarden Thank you @assemblyrow for the encore season. Thank you to hundreds of staff over four years and the 100,000+ guests we served." Jewell mentions in the comment within the thread that this is a "permanent" closure, but follows up by saying "we'd like to do another someday."

The beer garden, which debuted in the fall of 2014, was part of a trio of spots that includes Somerville Brewing Company/American Fresh Brewhouse Brewery and Taproom on Ward Street and American Fresh Brewhouse at Assembly Row. The website for the business can be found at http://www.slumbrew.com/

Plans for Waxy O'Connor's to Open at Somerville's Assembly Row Have Fallen Through

Last year, we reported that a group of Irish pubs was planning to expand to Somerville. Now we have learned that this will not be happening after all.

According to a source, plans for Waxy O'Connor's to open at Assembly Row have fallen through, with an email sent to us this morning confirming this news, stating that another restaurant/concept is now being pursued for that space. This comes on the heels of chatter from multiple sources saying that Waxy's would indeed no longer be coming to Assembly Row, though it had not been officially confirmed until now.

As reported earlier, the Brookline location of Waxy O'Connor's shut down in January (which sparked the rumors of Waxy's in Somerville no longer happening), though other locations in Foxboro, Kingston, Lexington, and Woburn remain in operation, as well as others in Keene, NH, Plainville, CT, San Antonio, TX, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

American Fresh Beer Garden in Somerville's Assembly Row Is Reopening

A Somerville beer garden that closed down a few months ago is going to be returning.

A message sent from Somerville Brewing Company states that American Fresh Beer Garden at Assembly Row in Somerville is planning to reopen, though no specifics have been given as of yet (more information may be coming later today). The beer garden, which debuted in the fall of 2014, will end up being the third spot for the brewery once it opens, with American Fresh Brewhouse Brewery and Taproom being located at the brewery on Ward Street and American Fresh Brewhouse recently opening at Assembly Row.

Somerville Brewing Company is known in part for its line of Slumbrew beers.

Update: Team Behind Carmen in Boston's North End to Open La Cucina at Assembly Row in Somerville

[Ed note: This article was updated several times to reflect the fact that plans for Carmen to reopen have fallen through, with new plans now in the works.]

An upscale Italian restaurant that left Boston's North End more than a year ago could be returning to a section of Somerville that is continuing to be redeveloped.

According to several sources (including posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page), Carmen may be opening at Assembly Row in Somerville, with a sign out front saying that it is coming soon and is currently hiring. The restaurant had been located at North Square until July of 2016 when it closed, saying that it would be reopening in a new space.

Carmen first opened in the North End approximately 17 years ago, offering such items as crespelle, baked penne, braised short rib ravioli, roasted rack of pork, and pan-seared duck breast.

One of our sources says that if all goes as planned, the new location of Carmen could be opening at Assembly Row in the spring of 2018.

[April 25, 2018 update: Eater Boston states that plans for Carmen's to open at Assembly Row are no longer in the works, as the team behind the restaurant is now looking at a new, larger space at the development where they would apparently open a new restaurant with a different name.]

[May 1, 2018 update: According to a source, a new restaurant called La Cucina Italian Eatery is coming to Assembly Row, with the place planning to open at the corner of Foley Street and Assembly Row and having nearly 6,000 square feet of space based on a property map from http://federalrealty.com, while a job posting from indeed.com mentions that the place will be a regional Italian restaurant that will apparently be a fine-dining spot. It appears that this may be the restaurant that the people behind Carmen are planning to open, though we are still waiting for confirmation on this.]

[September 26, 2018 update: A source tells us that the people behind Carmen are indeed behind the upcoming La Cucina, and this appears to be confirmed by creativekatz.com as well.]

[December 6, 2018 update: A post within the jobs section of bostonchefs.com indicates that La Cucina plans to open this month and that it will be a "fast paced upscale Italian restaurant."]

[January 21, 2019 update: La Cucina has not yet opened, but a source tells us that it is now planning to open at the end of this month.]

Sabroso Taqueria in Boston's Financial District Expands to Somerville's Assembly Row

A Mexican eatery that returned to downtown Boston a few years ago has been joined by a second location within a growing development in Somerville.

According to an article from Eater Boston, Sabroso Taqueria is now open at Assembly Row, moving into a space in the new Partners HealthCare building. It looks like the new location of the dining spot offers the same items as that of the Oliver Street location in Boston's Financial District, including tacos, burritos, guacamole, and quesadillas, and beer and wine are also available as well.

Sabroso returned to Boston in October of 2014, returning to the area after being at another location on Washington Street which closed in 2008 when the Filene's building was taken down. A Sabroso food truck can also be found at several locations around Boston.

The Smoke Shop BBQ Is Opening at Assembly Row in Somerville

Earlier this month, we reported that a popular BBQ restaurant in Cambridge was getting ready to open at least one new location in the Boston area. Now we have learned where one of them might be.

According to a poster on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Smoke Shop BBQ appears to be on its way to Assembly Row in Somerville, with a page on the Federal Realty Investment Trust website including the dining spot in a list of tenants either currently open or on their way to the development. Earlier information that we had received indicated that a new location of the barbecue spot would be coming to a space in Boston that we are still holding off on naming until it is made official, so it is possible that the Assembly Row outlet will be one of at least three Smoke Shop locations in the Boston area. [Ed note--the location coming to Boston has opened in the former Tavern Road space in Fort Point.]

Chef and restaurateur Andy Husbands first opened The Smoke Shop in Kendall Square in June of 2016, joining Tremont 647 and Sister Sorel in Boston's South End, which he also operates.

A Somerville beer garden will soon be closing down, as the people behind it get ready to open a nearby brewhouse.

A message sent to us indicates that American Fresh Beer Garden in Assembly Row is having a farewell party that is open to the public on September 30, though it could stay open for an extra day depending on the weather. Somerville Brewing Company--which runs the beer garden--will also be opening American Fresh Brewhouse at Assembly Row around that time, though no specific opening date has been given as of yet, while the American Fresh Brewhouse Brewery and Taproom at Somerville Brewing Company on Ward Street will remain in operation. (The brewery is also where Slumbrew beers are made.)

Midici: The Neapolitan Pizza Company to Open at Somerville's Assembly Row

A California-based "fast-fine" pizza chain is on its way to the Boston area, setting up shop in a growing development just north of the city.

Eater Boston is reporting that Midici is planning to open at Assembly Row in Somerville, joining another pizzeria--Ernesto's--within the complex. The chain's website says that its franchises combine "the best of fast-casual with highly polished and experiential fine dining" and that it is planning to have a major expansion, opening 50 new shops by the end of 2017 and considering a possible 1,000 locations over the next 20 years.

Midici, which is headquartered in Los Angeles, currently has no locations in New England; it is not yet known if the Somerville shop will be the first or if other locations in the region might open before the Assembly Row outlet.

[December 27 update: The Somerville Journal says that in addition to Margherita pizzas being given out on its planned opening day (January 11), Midici will also give 20 percent of proceeds to the Somerville Homeless Coalition and the Somerville High School Culinary Arts program on January 12 and children will be able to eat for free on January 13.]

[January 8, 2018 update: According to an email, the opening of Midici at Assembly Row has been delayed due to last week's storm, as high winds caused outdoor scaffolding to collapse which affects some of the final construction taking place. It appears that the restaurant could be opening later this month, but no opening date has been given as of yet.]

[January 30, 2018 update: A new email indicates that Midici now looks to have its grand opening at Assembly Row on Friday, February 9, and that it plans to offer one free margherita pizza to all customers that day. In addition, children 12 and under (with a paying adult) will receive a free margherita pizza on Saturday, February 10, and on Thursday, February 15, the restaurant will donate 20 percent of all sales to  a combination of the Somerville High School Culinary Arts Program and the Somerville Homeless Coalition.]

American Fresh Brewhouse to Open in Somerville's Assembly Row

A brewery in Somerville is going to be opening a third space where people can try their beers--and their second outlet at a growing development within the city.

 According to a press release, Somerville Brewing Company (which is known for its Slumbrew line of beers) will open a new location of its American Fresh Brewhouse concept on Foley Street at Assembly Row, joining the original American Fresh Brewhouse at the Boynton Yards brewery on Ward Street and American Fresh Garden, a year-round beer garden that is also at Assembly Row. [Ed note: The beer garden is now closed.] The email says that the new location will have 3,600 square feet of space and a small brewery, with 20 draft lines and outdoor seating during the warmer months. In addition to the beers offered at the main brewery, the new brewpub will also feature "special experimental beers" that are made on the premises, and it will feature breakfast, full meals, and small plates, along with a weekend brunch.

If all goes well, the new location of  American Fresh Brewhouse could be open sometime in the late spring.

Caffe Nero Is Opening at Somerville's Assembly Row

A chain of European-style coffee places that is rapidly expanding through the Boston area will be opening yet another, with this one being in a growing development in Somerville.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Caffe Nero plans to open a new location at Assembly Row, with its opening being a part of Phase 2 of construction which will also bring such places as Zo, Waxy O'Connor's, Mike's Pastry, Lucky Strike, and more. Once it opens this fall, the new shop will join a number of others in the Greater Boston area, including in Downtown Crossing, the South End, Fort Point, Longwood, Jamaica Plain, Brookline, Cambridge's Central Square, Andover, and Wellesley.

[September 25 update: It looks like Caffe Nero at Assembly Row may be close to opening, as a Craigslist post mentions that it is holding a job fair tomorrow and Wednesday.]

[October 20 update: According to a Twitter post from the place, Caffe Nero soft-opens today at Assembly Row, and it will give out free coffee from now until 3:00 PM, when it closes for the day.]

[October 25 update: A message sent from Caffe Nero indicates that its Assembly Row location is now fully open, with hours being 6:30 AM to 9:30 PM Monday through Friday and 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM on weekends.]

Zo Is Opening at Somerville's Assembly Row

It looks like a pair of Greek quick-service dining spots in Boston will be joined by a third in a growing development just north of the city.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Zo is planning to open at Assembly Row as part of Phase 2 of construction there, which will also bring such spots as Waxy O'Connor's, Mike's Pastry, Lucky Strike, and more. Once it opens, the new eatery will join locations at Boston's Center Plaza and State Street, and based on those locations, the Somerville location could include soups, salads, stuffed grape leaves, gyros, pita wraps, and spinach pie.

It looks like Zo may open at Assembly Row sometime this fall if all goes as planned, according to the article.
