Pictures from the 2010 Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party

We just got back from the 2010 Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party that is being held at Suffolk Downs in East Boston this weekend. A few photos of the food we tried are below--I would say that personally, the chopped pork from Chicago BBQ and the beef sandwich from Texas Thunder were the two best items, though everything we tried was good.

Here are the photos...by the way, if you would like information on the event, please go to this link: http://bbq.phantomgourmet.com/SD/home.aspx

Photos from 2009 Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party, Suffolk Downs

Below are photos of some of the food items offered at the Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party at Suffolk Downs in East Boston today. Of the dishes shown, the pulled pork nachos from Willingham's (Tennessee), the boneless rib sandwich from Johnson' Bar-B-Que (Virginia), and the brisket, white bean, cheese, and jalapeno pepper burrito from Jack's Down Home Barbecue (Pennsylvania) were probably the most impressive, but all five dishes that were tried were very satisfying.

Please note that the BBQ Beach Party will also be held on Saturday and Sunday (June 27 and June 28), with the hours being 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM each day. More information on the event can be found at http://bbq.phantomgourmet.com/SD/home.aspx

Notes and Photos: Barbecue Beach Party, Boston, June 19, 2008

I spent the evening at the Phantom Gourmet's BBQ Beach Party at City Hall Plaza in Boston, just getting back a little while ago. I'm glad that this year, I went on a weeknight, as the lines were nonexistent and there was no sun blazing straight down on everyone (I went around noon on Sunday last year--never again). This year, I tried four different items at four places, two of which I had visited last year. Here is the rundown:

photo of Willingham's, BBQ Beach Party, Boston, 2008 Started at Willingham's (Memphis, Tennessee. I tried their pulled pork sandwich. It was pretty good, but a bit bland, even after putting some of their sauce on the meat. But their specialty is ribs, and a friend of mine who went said that the ribs at Willingham's were about the best he has ever had.

photo of Porky N Beans, BBQ Beach Party, Boston, 2008 From Willingham's, went right over to Porky n' Beans (St. Lucie, Florida). I ordered the boneless rib sandwich, which I liked better than the pulled pork at Willingham's. The meat was incredibly rich and tender, with a slight hot dog taste to it, and a deliciously sweet sauce that they poured on top of the meat. After awhile, the meat was almost too rich to eat, so I didn't quite finish the sandwich, but it really was quite good.

photo of Jack's, BBQ Beach Party, Boston, 2008 We took a bit of a break after Porky n' Beans, then headed over to Jack's Down Home Barbecue (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). I had been to Jack's last year and really loved their pulled pork sandwich; this year, I ordered their pulled pork nachos plate. The nachos were basic, and the cheese was Velveeta (or something similar to Velveeta), but the pulled pork was outstanding once again, making this plate my favorite of the night up to this point.

photo of Q BBQ, BBQ Beach Party, Boston, 2008 We finished the evening at Q BBQ (Richmond, Virginia), which was another repeat for me. Last year, I had a hot dog with chili; this year, they were no longer serving hot dogs, so I went for the beef sandwich. It was not quite a brisket sandwich and not quite chopped beef, but was somewhere in between, but the meat had some tremendous flavor to it, and the sauce on the sandwich was the best I had all night.

I would have liked to have tried some of the other places at the BBQ Beach Party, but my stomach wouldn't allow it. My favorite dish of the night? I'm wavering between Jack's pulled pork nachos and Q BBQ's beef sandwich, perhaps giving the nod to Jack's, mainly because the pulled pork was so good.

For all who go to the BBQ Beach Party this weekend, have fun!

Some Notes on the BBQ Beach Party in Boston

Just got back from the Phantom Gourmet's BBQ Beach Party at City Hall Plaza in Boston. It was a great time, with the only minor quibble being the extremely long lines for each restaurant. But it was a beautiful day, so it came as no surprise that so many people showed up for this event.

I was able to try food at three different places while I was at the BBQ Beach Party. I started out at Q, which is out of Virginia. I tried their hot dog with brisket chili on it; they call it "the world's best hot dog," and while I don't know if it was the world's best (or even the best I've had), it sure was tasty, with a fairly thick natural casing holding the juices in, and a satisfyingly chewy texture to the meat.

The second place I tried was Dave's Good Ole Boys Bar-B-Que, which is out of New York. The brisket sandwich I had there was nearly perfect, as it was lean, but not TOO lean (too lean is never a good thing when it comes to BBQ, in my opinion), and the mild but tasty barbecue sauce added just enough flavor to make this a quite satisfying dish.

I saved the best for last, though (not knowing at the time, of course), heading over to Jack's Down Home Barbecue, which is located in Pennsylvania. Their pulled pork was absolutely delectable, with incredible flavor coming out of every little thread of meat. And I liked the barbecue sauce at Jack's a little better than Dave's, as it had a more hearty flavor.

After I finished the pulled pork sandwich, I headed out, as I couldn't deal with the long lines (the sun beating down didn't help), so I missed out on a few other places, but hopefully next year, the Phantom will set it up once again so I can try all of them.
