Tambo 22 in Chelsea Is Closing; Michael G's Bar and Bistro to Move into Its Space

Last month, it was reported that a Peruvian-Italian restaurant in Chelsea was planning to add some new menu items that come from an acclaimed North End dining spot that closed during the pandemic, and now we have learned that the restaurant is now going to be saying farewell, though another dining spot that recently closed will be reborn in its space.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page along with a Facebook post from the business,  Tambo 22 on Adams Street is shutting down, with the post saying the following:

With heavy hearts, we share that Tambo 22 will close its doors on December 20. The past few years have challenged the entire restaurant world. The pressure of rising costs, staffing obstacles, and the realities of our location made this one of the hardest decisions we've ever had to make. What will stay with us forever are the friendships, the laughter, and the moments shared at our tables — memories that will always be part of our story....We are deeply grateful to our loyal guests and devoted team for being with us on this journey.

A source tells us (via a North Shore Eats Facebook post) that the space will actually be home to a familiar name, as the shuttered Michael G's on Revere Beach Parkway will be reborn as Michael G's Bar and Bistro within the Tambo space.

Tambo 22, which first opened in March of 2020, announced in October that it was adding some of the best-known menu items from Taranta (which had been located on Hanover Street until shuttering in a few months later), with owner Jose Duarte saying that "Taranta represented the bridge between two cultures — Italy and Peru — and Tambo 22 gives those flavors a new home....It's about keeping that story alive while inviting a new generation of diners to experience it."

Michael G's in Chelsea Is Being Reborn as Michael G's Trattoria

A few months ago, it was reported that an Italian restaurant just north of Boston had shut down, and now we have learned that it is being reborn.

According to a Facebook post from owner Michael Giannasca, Michael G's in Chelsea is going to be reopening as Michael G's Trattoria, with the post from the Revere Beach Parkway restaurant saying the following:

Hi, I'm a little premature but just so excited to announce that Maryann and I are re-opening The New [Michael G's Trattoria] More detail to be posted in the next few weeks but I'm planning on a January 2026 opening We are planning on a small lunch menu with fresh salads, artisan sandwiches, home made soups, pasta and our famous BBQ, We will have waitress service in the afternoon with imported wines, craft beers and a specialty cocktail menu

Michael G's shuttered over the summer after approximately five years in business, though as mentioned in an earlier article here, at the time of the announcement they were keeping the possibility open for reopening the place in the future.

[November 14 update: According to a source (via a North Shore Eats Facebook post), Michael G's Trattoria is actually going to be opening in a different space, moving into the Adams Street storefront where Tambo 22 currently resides.]

Tambo 22 in Chelsea Plans to Bring Back Menu Items from Taranta in Boston's North End

A Peruvian-Italian restaurant just north of Boston is looking to add some new menu items to its current offerings--and they come from an acclaimed dining spot that had been in the North End until closing early on in the pandemic.

According to a press release, Chef José Duarte of Tambo 22 in Chelsea will be adding some of the best-known menu items from Taranta (which had been located on Hanover Street until shutting down in August of 2020), with options including brined double thick pork chop with chancaca and rocoto, chicken parm with cancha corn crust and fusilli pomodoro with Peruvian panca pepper, and gnocchi di yuca with a braised lamb ragu seco style, along with some new dishes as well. In the press release, Duarte mentions that "Taranta represented the bridge between two cultures — Italy and Peru — and Tambo 22 gives those flavors a new home....It's about keeping that story alive while inviting a new generation of diners to experience it." The new menu items from Taranta will be introduced on Thursday, October 23.

Tambo 22 first opened its doors in Chelsea in March of 2020.

Michael G's in Chelsea Has Closed

An Italian restaurant just north of Boston has shut down.

According to a source, Michael G's in Chelsea is no longer in business, with the social media for the Revere Beach Parkway confirming this, saying that it has indeed closed, though keeping the possibility open for possibly reopening the place in the future. Michael G's first opened approximately five years ago within the Chelsea Commons shopping center, offering such options as soups, salads, pizza, pasta dishes, subs, grill items, and more.

Ciao! Pizza and Pasta in Chelsea Is Expanding to Somerville

An award-winning wood-fired pizzeria in Chelsea is expanding to a new location.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Ciao! Pizza and Pasta is planning to open in Somerville, with an Instagram story showing a photo of an oven and saying "coming soon" and "first fire!" Another poster within the group mentions that the new location plans to open at 688 Broadway in Ball Square, which is also shown within a Somerville Times page.

The Chelsea location of Ciao! Pizza and Pasta first opened on Williams Street in 2015, gaining recognition from Boston Magazine, The Boston Globe, Yelp, and the Food Network over the years. Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea to Close September 9

A restaurant and bar known for its steak tips and ribs will be closing its original location next month.

According to a tweet from the place, Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea is planning to close on September 9, with the post referring customers to their new location in Wakefield and their upcoming restaurant in Malden. As reported here over the past couple of weeks, owner John Floramo has taken over the kitchen of the Dockside Restaurant space on Main Street in Wakefield and is in the process of changing the name of the restaurant to Floramo's, while another location of Floramo's Restaurant is taking over the former House of Smoke/Dockside Restaurant space on Route 60 in Malden.

A message sent to us from Floramo's last week hints that they could possibly open back up in Chelsea at some point, saying that "The land and building in Chelsea was sold voluntarily with a potential to return once construction is complete." (A research and lab building is being planned for the Everett Avenue space.)

Last month, it was reported that the owner of a beloved spot for steak tips and ribs was taking over the kitchen of a restaurant in the northern suburbs, and now we have learned that the kitchen isn't the only thing changing.

A tweet from Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea says (via a screenshot of an article from the Wakefield Daily Item) that Dockside Restaurant in Wakefield is in the process of becoming a new location of Floramo's. Back in the early part of June, John Floramo started serving lunch at the Main Street spot, offering some faves from the original Floramo's, and a few days later he started offering dinner as well there. It is not known what kinds of changes (if any) the menu might ultimately have at the Wakefield location of Floramo's, and it isn't known if this will be more of a move or a second location, as a new development is being planned for the Floramo's space in Chelsea, though they have apparently been asked to return once construction is complete.

New Development at Floramo's Site in Chelsea Gets Approval; Floramo's Could Return to Space

A few months ago, it was reported that a beloved spot for steak tips and ribs could see its space become home to a new development. Now we have learned that this indeed appears to be happening, though this does not mean the end of the line for the restaurant.

Based on information given to us by a source, along with info from a Chelsea Record article, the city of Chelsea has given its approval for the variances and special permit that will allow the developer Verdynt to construct a research and lab building on Everett Avenue where Floramo's Restaurant currently resides. The article indicates that Floramo's could return to a ground-floor space at the site once construction is complete (possibly in three years), with City Council President Roy Avellaneda saying that "I know [Verdynt] didn't speak about this, but they have encouraged and asked Floramo's to stay on....Now, whether or not the Floramo family wants to stay is a separate agreement, but they have offered."

Doug Medvetz, who is the principal from Verdynt, mentions that "I've gotten to know John Floramo quite well, we have had numerous conversations, he's the son....There is a strong interest in them coming back, it's just a matter of logistics....He doesn't want to open with a different staff....He is working on an alternative strategy to keep the staff together at a different restaurant during construction." It is possible that Medvetz could be referring to the Dockside in Wakefield, whose kitchen was recently taken over by Floramo's and which is serving some of the favorites from the Chelsea restaurant.

The owner of a legendary spot for steak tips and ribs just outside of Boston is now serving some of their faves at a restaurant in the northern suburbs.

According to a notice from the place, John Floramo of Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea has taken over the kitchen at Dockside Restaurant in Wakefield, with the post stating that "His lunch menu, cooked his way, with his recipes and sauces will start [Monday, June 6]" while showing a menu that includes steak and turkey tips, ribs, shrimp scampi, veal cutlet, and more. In addition, a tweet from Dockside says to "Stay tuned for a BIG announcement!" while including a #comingsoon hashtag, so we should know more as to the exact plans for the space over the coming days and weeks.

Floramo's, which dates back to the mid-1980s, is known for its grill items, BBQ, and Italian dishes, along with its famous slogan "where the meat falls off the bone." Dockside once had locations in Malden (two) and Chelsea, with one of the Malden outlets now being home to House of Smoke, a BBQ spot under the same ownership.

Demolition Proposal Hearing Scheduled for 213 Everett Avenue in Chelsea, Which Is the Address for Floramo's Restaurant

A hearing has been scheduled for May 10 for the proposed demolition of a building in Chelsea, and the address happens to be that of an iconic spot known for its ribs and steak tips.

Multiple sources have told us (via a tweet from @ChelseaScanner and an edition of The Chelsea Record) that approval for special permits and variances is being sought for the demolition of the structure at 213 Everett Avenue along with three adjoining lots, with plans for the space possibly being construction of an 11-story research and development lab. The 213 Everett Avenue address is that of Floramo's Restaurant; we reached out to Floramo's for more information earlier today and are waiting to hear back from them.

The notice does mention that the laboratory "does not meet the requirements for lot area, rear and front yard setbacks, minimum aisle width, and number of off-street parking spaces and also exceeds maximum number of stories, and floor area ratio at the premises," which is apparently why the special permits and variances are being requested.

Lime Is Opening in the Former Winnisimmet Lounge Space in Chelsea

A new restaurant is on its way to Chelsea, opening where a cocktail lounge had been.

According to an article in the Chelsea Record, Lime is planning to open in the former Winnisimmet Lounge space, with the post saying that the upcoming dining spot plans to offer dishes with Asian, Mediterranean, and African influences. A check on the OpenCorporates site indicates that Petal Joseph-Seale, who is the chef/owner of local caterer Petal's Table, is one of the people behind the place, along with Ian Seale.

Winnisimmet Lounge, which first opened in the spring of 2019, went up for sale in the spring of 2020, with the people behind it indicating that the pandemic played a role in the decision to close.

The Pasta Box Opens in Chelsea

A new spot for pasta and more has officially opened in Chelesa after being briefly open just before the pandemic started.

According to its website and Facebook page, The Pasta Box on Broadway is now open, with the menu for the place showing such options as macaroni and cheese, linguini puttanesca, chicken marsala with casarecce, chicken milanese with spaghetti, risotto, ribeye, burgers, grilled octopus, wings, tiramisu, and more, along with beer and wine. Writer Jackie Cain tells us that the restaurant actually debuted a short time before the coronavirus outbreak--possibly in January of 2020--with the place focusing on catering for much of 2020 and 2021.

SRV in the South End, Tambo 22 in Chelsea, White Horse Tavern in Allston, Shay's in Harvard Square Heading Toward Hibernation

At least four more local restaurants/bars are planning to shut down for the time being.

According to multiple sources, SRV in the South End of Boston, Tambo 22 in Chelsea, White Horse Tavern in Allston, and Shay's Pub & Wine Bar in Cambridge's Harvard Square are all planning to join the ever-growing group of dining spots to go into hibernation, with SRV saying that their last day will be Sunday, December 20 and that they plan to reopen after the peak of winter, while Tambo 22 mentions that they will also hibernate after dinner service on December 20 and that they will open back up "when we feel it is safe and practical to do so." In addition, we just received word that White Horse Tavern will close starting tomorrow (Tuesday, December 8) and that it plans to reopen sometime in 2021 when there are fewer restrictions on dining and drinking spots, while Shay's says that their last day will be Sunday, December 13 and that they will be closed for the winter.

Earlier today, we had reported that Canary Square in Jamaica Plain, Catalyst Restaurant in Cambridge's Kendall Square, Colette, in Cambridge's Porter Square, and Dali Restaurant & Tapas Bar in Somerville have already gone into hibernation as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Winnisimmet Lounge in Chelsea Is Up for Sale

A cocktail lounge that opened last year--and that was run by the people behind a highly-rated pizzeria nearby--is on the market.

According to a source, the Winnisimmet Lounge in Chelsea is up for sale, with an Instagram post from the Winnisimmet Street spot saying the following:

At this time, and with the overwhelming challenges posed to us all by the Covid-19 virus pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to list The Winissimmet Lounge for sale. In the short time we were part of the Chelsea community with this concept, we were grateful for the support we received and for the friendships we gained over that time. We wish you all health and happiness as we continue to navigate this difficult time in our hard-hit city.

The Winnisimmet Lounge, which first opened in the Parrotta's Alpine Lodge space in the spring of 2019, has been known in part for its small plates and craft cocktails; the owners of Ciao! Pizza & Pasta and Ciao! on Williams Street in Chelsea were behind the place.

Tambo 22 Opens in Chelsea

A brand new dining spot has opened just north of Boston, and a big local name is behind the restaurant.

As mentioned in an earlier article here, Tambo 22 opens in Chelsea for dinner today, with the dining spot featuring Peruvian fare, which is slightly different from what was originally thought when a meeting minutes page from the city's website from the summer of 2018 indicated that it was planning to be a Peruvian and Italian fusion spot. Jose Duarte of Taranta--which features Peruvian and Italian fusion dishes--has teamed up with Taylor and Brian Corcoran and chef Christopher Titus in the opening of the new place (which is open for dinner only), offering such dishes as grilled beef skewers, ceviche, mussels, lamb shank, pulled pork, and Amazonian paiche wrapped in a banana leaf, while beer and wine is also available.

Winnisimmet Cocktail Lounge Opens at Former Parrotta's Alpine Lodge Site in Chelsea

A couple of years ago, we reported that the people behind a highly-rated pizza and pasta spot were going to open a market and a lounge nearby. Now we have learned that the lounge has finally opened, joining both the pizza and pasta place and the now-open market.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, the Winnisimmet Cocktail Lounge is now open in Chelsea, taking over the space where Parrotta's Alpine Lodge had once been. As mentioned earlier, Edson Coimbra and Marvin Posada of Ciao! Pizza & Pasta and Ciao! Market are behind the new dining and drinking establishment, which features food items with Italian influences as well as beer, wine, and cocktails, and while it is only open for dinner right now (and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays), a weekend brunch will be coming at some point.

Ciao! Pizza & Pasta first opened on Williams Street in the fall of 2015, offering wood-fired pizza, freshly-made pasta dishes, panini, salads, and desserts, while Ciao! Market opened on Broadway in the summer of 2017.

Jose Duarte of Taranta in Boston's North End Plans to Open Tambo 22 in Chelsea

It looks like a new restaurant is opening just over the bridge from Boston, and a well-known chef and restaurateur is involved with the place.

According to a Facebook post from Susan Holaday of Foodservice East, Jose Duarte of Taranta in Boston's North End is planning to open a dining spot in Chelsea, with an earlier meeting minutes page seeming to confirm this, saying that Duarte and Taylor Corcoran (Choquet), who is also from Taranta, being behind the place, which would be on Adams Street and whose parent company is called Oakwood Tavern, LLC. The minutes page had mentioned that the restaurant would be a Peruvian and Italian fusion spot with a capacity around or just under 20, though it is not known if this remains the case for both the concept and capacity. Pollo Campero in Chelsea Destroyed in Fire

A Boston-area location of a chain of chicken spots has been destroyed in a fire.

According to an article from NBC Boston, Pollo Campero in Chelsea was hit by a two-alarm blaze overnight that apparently started in the rear of the Park Street structure, with firefighters having to pull away from the fire because conditions went downhill too much to allow them to safely try to put it out. The post says that the building is a total loss, while The Boston Globe mentions that one firefighter sustained minor injuries in the blaze.

Pollo Campero first opened in Chelsea approximately 10 years ago and has since been joined by two others in East Boston and Lynn; the chain got its start nearly 40 years ago in Guatemala.

Dockside Restaurant in Chelsea Is Closing; El Potro Taking Over Space

A trio of restaurants featuring classic American fare will be down to just two, while a trio of Mexican spots is expanding into the space.

According to an email from the place, the Dockside in Chelsea is shutting down on Saturday, April 7, after six years in business and that it is being sold to El Potro Mexican Bar & Grill. The email says that all gift cards and loyalty membership points will be honored at the other two Dockside restaurants, which can be found on Centre Street in Malden and Main Street in Wakefield. It is not known when the new location of El Potro might open, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

Currently, locations of El Potro can be found in Lowell, Malden, and Somerville.

Owners of Ciao! Pizza & Pasta in Chelsea to Open Ciao! Market, Winnisimmet Lounge

The people behind a restaurant that gets high marks for its pizza will be opening a couple of new businesses nearby.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Edson Coimbra and Marvin Posada of Ciao! Pizza & Pasta in Chelsea are planning to open Ciao! Market and the Winnisimmet Lounge, with the former being on Broadway and the latter being on Winnisimmet Street--and both of which will be within walking distance of Ciao!, which is located on Williams Street. The article says that the market will have a space for pasta production and will also have an espresso counter along with a display case for gelato, pastries, and pasta, while the lounge will be a casual spot that offers Italian small plates as well as beer, wine, and cocktails. If all goes as planned, Ciao! Market should open this summer while the Winnisimmet Lounge might not be open for 18 months or so.

Ciao! Pizza & Pasta first opened in the fall of 2015, offering wood-fired pizza, freshly-made pasta dishes, panini, salads, and desserts. The pizza at Ciao! has been a big hit among media people and diners alike, with one Boston Globe writer saying of the pizza, "it's with some trepidation that I'd like to argue I've found the best Neapolitan pie in the Boston area. Maybe anywhere outside of Italy."

The address for Ciao! Market will be 212 Broadway while the address for the Winnisimmet Lounge will be 73 Winnisimmet Street.
