Bossmama Taproom & Kitchen in Wakefield Is Bringing Floramo's into Its Space

A dining and drinking spot in the northern suburbs of Boston that is known in part for its "pour your own beer" concept is teaming up with a restaurant that is famous for its steak tips.

According to an Instagram post, Bossmama Taproom & Kitchen in Wakefield is bringing the Floramo's team into their space, with Bossmama keeping its menu in place while Floramo's will be offering their tips, ribs, and more to customers as well. The post indicates that over the next few week, Bossmama and Floramo's will be working to merge the two teams together, and more specifics on the collaboration should be coming out soon over social media.

Floramo's Restaurant had originally been in Chelsea, moving to spaces in Wakefield and Malden in 2022 with both of those locations closing earlier this year. (There is still talk that Floramo's will open back up in Chelsea at some point in the future. )

The address for Bossmama Taproom & Kitchen/Floramo's is 963 Main Street, Wakefield, MA, 01880. The website for Bossmama is at https://bossmamataproom.com/ while the Facebook page for Floramo's is at https://www.facebook.com/@Floramosbarandgrille/

Conrad's Is Opening in Needham

A local group of restaurants known in part for their steak tips will soon be opening a new location.

According to a source, Conrad's is going to be opening in Needham, moving into the space on Highland Avenue that had been home to a locations of Bertucci's. We have been told that the new outlet hopes to open later this year, which seems to jibe with an earlier Needham Observer article that said the plan was to open sometime this fall. Once the Needham location of Conrad's opens, it will join others in Norwood, Walpole, and Foxboro (another had been in Sudbury as well, but it closed in 2022).

The address for the new location of Conrad's in Needham is 1257 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA, 02492. The website for all locations is at https://conradsrestaurant.com/

[February 13, 2025 update: According to a source (Gary Goldblatt) and a post from the Needham Observer, Conrad's is slated to open in Needham today.]

Floramo's Restaurant in Malden Has Closed; Plans to Reopen in New Location

A popular spot for steak tips has shut down, though it plans to open back up in another space.

According to a Facebook post, Floramo's Restaurant in Malden is closed, with replies from the place within the thread indicating that it will be reopening in a new location nearby soon. As mentioned in an earlier article, the Wakefield location had shuttered as well a couple of months ago, while the hope is that Floramo's will open back up in Chelsea--which was its original home--at some point in the future.

The Malden location of Floramo's first opened in September of 2022.

The address for the now-closed location of  Floramo's Restaurant in Malden was 229 Centre Street (Route 60), Malden, MA, 02148. The website for Floramo's is at http://floramos.net/

Floramo's in Wakefield Has Been Replaced by Main St Grille and Taphouse; Malden Location of Floramo's Remains in Operation

One of two locations of a legendary place for steak tips has shut down and has been replaced by a new spot.

According to a Facebook post from the business, Floramo's Restaurant in Wakefield is no longer in operation, with the post saying that "Floramo's Malden & Wakefield have combined" while referring customers to the Centre Street location in Malden. The thread also indicates that Floramo's does eventually plan to open back up in Chelsea, as was hinted at when its original location there closed in 2022, a few months after the Wakefield outlet debuted and just before the Malden location opened.

We have been told that the new spot replacing the Wakefield location of Floramo's is called Main St Grille and Taphouse, and it offers such options as BBQ, American fare, and pizza.

The address for the now-closed location of Floramo's in Wakefield (and the new Main St Grille and Taphouse) is 1099 Main Street, Wakefield, MA, 01880. The website for Floramo's is at http://floramos.net/ while the website for Main St Grille and Taphouse is at https://www.mainstgrilletaphouse.com/

Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea to Close September 9

A restaurant and bar known for its steak tips and ribs will be closing its original location next month.

According to a tweet from the place, Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea is planning to close on September 9, with the post referring customers to their new location in Wakefield and their upcoming restaurant in Malden. As reported here over the past couple of weeks, owner John Floramo has taken over the kitchen of the Dockside Restaurant space on Main Street in Wakefield and is in the process of changing the name of the restaurant to Floramo's, while another location of Floramo's Restaurant is taking over the former House of Smoke/Dockside Restaurant space on Route 60 in Malden.

A message sent to us from Floramo's last week hints that they could possibly open back up in Chelsea at some point, saying that "The land and building in Chelsea was sold voluntarily with a potential to return once construction is complete." (A research and lab building is being planned for the Everett Avenue space.)

The address for Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea is 213 Everett Avenue, Chelsea, MA, 02150. Its website is at http://floramos.net/

Floramo's Restaurant Is Opening in Malden

Last week, it was reported that an iconic place for steak tips and ribs was expanding to a new location, and now we have learned that another new one is on its way as well.

According to a Twitter thread from Malden Mayor Gary Christenson, Floramo's Restaurant plans to open in that city, taking over the former House of Smoke/Dockside Restaurant space on Route 60. As mentioned earlier, this would be its second takeover of a Dockside space, as the Wakefield location of Dockside is also becoming Floramo's (and whose kitchen already has owner John Floramo behind it). It isn't exactly known what is becoming of Floramo's in Chelsea [ed note--now closed], as a new development is being planned for that space, though the dining spot has been asked to return once construction is complete.

The address for the upcoming location of  Floramo's Restaurant in Malden is 229 Centre Street (Route 60), Malden, MA, 02148. The website for Floramo's is at http://floramos.net/

[August 4 update: A statement sent to us from Floramo's says the following: "John and Kerri Floramo are so excited to be opening up shop in our hometown of Malden. John is a lifelong resident of the city and he and his wife have raised their family here. They're proud to bring the business to Malden and to serve the residents of this  awesome community.…The land and building in Chelsea was sold voluntarily with a potential to return once construction is complete."]

[September 22 update: A tweet from the restaurant indicates that Floramo's opens in Malden today.]

Dockside Restaurant in Wakefield Is Becoming Floramo's

Last month, it was reported that the owner of a beloved spot for steak tips and ribs was taking over the kitchen of a restaurant in the northern suburbs, and now we have learned that the kitchen isn't the only thing changing.

A tweet from Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea says (via a screenshot of an article from the Wakefield Daily Item) that Dockside Restaurant in Wakefield is in the process of becoming a new location of Floramo's. Back in the early part of June, John Floramo started serving lunch at the Main Street spot, offering some faves from the original Floramo's, and a few days later he started offering dinner as well there. It is not known what kinds of changes (if any) the menu might ultimately have at the Wakefield location of Floramo's, and it isn't known if this will be more of a move or a second location, as a new development is being planned for the Floramo's space in Chelsea, though they have apparently been asked to return once construction is complete.

The address for Dockside Restaurant (and the upcoming Floramo's Restaurant) in Wakefield is 1099 Main Street, Wakefield, MA, 01880. The website for Dockside is at https://www.docksiderestaurants.com/ while the website for Floramo's is at http://floramos.net/

According to a notice from the place, John Floramo of Floramo's Restaurant in Chelsea has taken over the kitchen at Dockside Restaurant in Wakefield, with the post stating that "His lunch menu, cooked his way, with his recipes and sauces will start [Monday, June 6]" while showing a menu that includes steak and turkey tips, ribs, shrimp scampi, veal cutlet, and more. In addition, a tweet from Dockside says to "Stay tuned for a BIG announcement!" while including a #comingsoon hashtag, so we should know more as to the exact plans for the space over the coming days and weeks.

Floramo's, which dates back to the mid-1980s, is known for its grill items, BBQ, and Italian dishes, along with its famous slogan "where the meat falls off the bone." Conrad's May Open in the Former Waxy O'Connor's Space in Foxboro

The people behind a trio of restaurants known in part for their steak tips could be opening a fourth, with this one replacing a now-closed outlet of an Irish pub.

According to a Patch article, Conrad's is hoping to open in the former Waxy O'Connor's space in Foxboro, with owner Robert Conrad securing the lease for the Main Street storefront. If town selectmen approve of the license for the new location of the restaurant, it would join others in Norwood, Walpole, and Sudbury.

The Lexington location of Waxy O'Connor's is the only one remaining in the region, as outlets in Foxboro, Brookline, Kingston, and Woburn have all closed.

The address for the proposed location of Conrad's in Foxboro (and the now-closed Waxy OConnor's) is 121 Main Street, Foxboro, MA, 02035. The website for the three other locations of Conrad's can be found at http://www.conradsrestaurant.com/

Thanks to a source for initially bringing this to our attention.

Barbara Lynch Working with Niece Kerri Lynch-Delaney to Open 16C in Quincy

[Ed note: This article was updated on October 21 to reflect new information given, including a name and address for the place.]

One of the best-known restaurateurs in the Boston area is helping her niece open a new dining spot just south of the city--and this one will feature pizza, steak tips, and more.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Barbara Lynch and Kerri Lynch-Delaney are planning to open an "upscale-casual Italian-themed" restaurant in Quincy Center, with the Cottage Avenue eatery specializing in seasonal sheet-pan pizza that is baked in a Rational combi oven. The article also says that the legendary steak tips once served at the now-closed Quiet Man in South Boston will be brought back, as Lynch-Delaney's father owned the iconic West Broadway bar, which closed back in 2008.

No name has been given for the new restaurant as of yet, nor is there an exact address or an estimated opening date at this point in time.

[October 21 update: According to a Twitter post from @TheJeffSullivan, the new restaurant from Barbara Lynch and Kerri Lynch-Delaney will be called 16C, and it will open at 16 Cottage Street, which is where the Granite Rail Tavern had been until recently. Some information given in a related Facebook post also indicates that Barbara Lynch is helping Kerri Lynch-Delaney opening the dining spot (including working on developing the menu), though it looks like this will ultimately be Kerri's restaurant. If all goes as planned, 16C could be opening sometime in January of 2016.]

[November 12 update: Eater Boston states that Kerri Lynch-Delaney is still aiming to open 16C in early 2016, and that she is also selling her bakery Babycakes, which is located in the Wollaston section of the city. The article mentions that the new restaurant will focus on American items (earlier, it had been reported that the place would be Italian-themed) and that in addition to pizza and steak tips, house-made ice cream may also be offered.]

[April 21, 2016 update: According to a poster on the Quincy Is Everything Facebook page, 16C is now open. (It is not yet known whether this is a soft opening or an official opening; as soon as we find out more, we will post another update here.)]

Barbara Lynch's restaurant group--Barbara Lynch Gruppo--runs Menton, Drink, Sportello, The Butcher Shop, B&G Oysters, and No. 9 Park, all of which are in Boston.

Sadie's Saloon and Eatery in Waltham Is Closing

photo of Sadie's Saloon and Eatery, Waltham, MAA watering hole in Waltham whose steak tips were considered by some to be among the best in the Boston area is going to be closing its doors later this week. The Brand New Watch blog of Wicked Local is reporting that Sadie's Saloon and Eatery on Pine Street (just off Moody Street) is planning to shut down on Friday, October 19 after being in business for 22 years. The article mentions that the owner (John Ratta) has not gone into specific details about why the place is closing, though it does appear that the shaky economy may have been one factor.

Sadie's has been featured on our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) as a little-known spot to go to for its steak tips--as well as its turkey tips and pork tips--with a review of the place being at the link below:

The address for this soon-to-close restaurant and bar in Waltham is: Sadie's Saloon and Eatery, 5 Pine Street, Waltham, MA, 02453.

Five Places to Go to for Steak Tips in the Boston Area

While not exclusively a New England food, steak tips do seem to be more popular in this part of the country than in many other regions. And the Boston area has no shortage of restaurants and bars that serve excellent tips. So what are the best of the best? Well, it is certainly up for debate, but here are five spots that are up there among our favorites for steak tips (in no particular order):

1) NewBridge Cafe, Chelsea: A local townie joint near the Everett line that is considered by many to have the best steak tips in the entire Boston area, the NewBridge Cafe has what we think is the best marinade of them all. A well-hidden secret (though many claim to have the recipe), the NewBridge marinade has a sweet and rich flavor that greatly enhances the taste of the tips. One warning: The restaurant can get very crowded on weekend nights, so go early or hit it on a weekday. Address: NewBridge Cafe, 650 Washington Avenue, Chelsea, MA, 02150. The phone number is (617) 884-0134.

2) Cronin's Publick House, Quincy: When a restaurant and bar has the web address "steaktips.com," you can probably come to the conclusion that the tips will at least be half-decent there. And they are more than half-decent at Cronin's, a small watering hole near the old shipyard in a mostly residential part of Quincy. While the marinade might not quite match that of the NewBridge Cafe, it is very good, and the quality of the meat is up there with the best. Cronin's also has other great items, including an outstanding Cajun chicken soup, which is a nice starter before moving onto the tips or some of their other meals. Address: Cronin's Publick House, 23 DesMoines Road, Quincy, MA, 02169. The phone number is (617) 786-9804.

3) Sadie's Saloon and Eatery, Waltham: A rather sketchy-looking place just off of Moody Street (which is commonly known as "Restaurant Row"), Sadie's has an old-school working-class feel to it, and the food certainly reflects this. Most of the dishes here come under the "pub grub" heading, including their delicious steak tips that have a fairly mild, yet flavorful marinade. And for those who tend to avoid red meat, the turkey tips at Sadie's are decent enough, while the pork tips are out of this world, with a terrific Ah-So style sauce used for the marinade. Address: Sadie's Saloon and Eatery, 5 Pine Street, Waltham, MA, 02453. The phone number is (781) 893-5555.

4) Salem Wood Cafe, Malden: Considered by some to be equal to the nearby NewBridge Cafe in quality, the steak tips at this neighborhood Italian-American restaurant and bar between Malden Center and the Maplewood section of the city are certainly top notch. The tips themselves seem to match the quality of those at the NewBridge, and the tangy marinade comes very close as well. And for those who aren't in the mood for tips, the menu at the Salem Wood features a variety of chicken, veal, and pasta dishes. Address: Salem Wood Cafe, 385 Salem Street, Malden, MA, 02148. The phone number is (781) 324-4488.

5) 99 Restaurants (various locations): Huh? The 99? Could this be a mistake? No, and here's why--the broiled steak tips at this local chain of family-friendly restaurants are outstanding, mainly because of the marinade they use, which is easily among the best you'll taste in the Boston area. And if you like, you can get your tips mixed with sauteed peppers, onions, and mushrooms at the 99, though purists may not want to go this route. The rest of the food at the 99 can be hit-or-miss, but the tips are perhaps the best item on their menu.

If you have any favorite places for steak tips, please post comments below or let us know on either our Facebook Fan Page or our Twitter Page, thanks! [Note: Thanks to Rich O for helping out with this post.]

Latest Review: Sadie's in Waltham, MA

photo of Sadie's, Waltham, MAThe latest review that is on the Boston's Hidden Restaurants site is Sadie's, a restaurant and bar just off of Moody Street in Waltham. Sadie's has mostly pub grub, with its specialty being the steak tips (they actually rival some of the best tips in the Boston area). Sadie's is a no-frills type place that has little atmosphere, but for those who love steak tips, this is a restaurant well worth going to.
