El Jalisco Mexican Grill in Beverly to Open New Location in the Former Fasika Space in East Somerville

A Mexican restaurant on the North Shore is looking to open closer to Boston.

According to a source, El Jalisco Mexican Grill in Beverly is planning to open in East Somerville, moving into space on Broadway where Fasika had been until closing last fall. (Another location of Fasika remains open in Roxbury.) Plans for El Jalisco have been confirmed in a Somerville Times page which mentions that a public hearing took place last week on the proposal, and while our source believes that it will be a second location rather than a move, we are still trying to confirm this, so stay tuned for updates.

The Beverly location of El Jalisco Mexican Grill offers such items as pupusas, nachos, tacos, chile colorado, carne asada, fajitas, enchiladas, grilled shrimp, burritos, flan, and churros.

The address for the proposed location of El Jalisco Mexican Grill in East Somerville is 145 Broadway, Somerville, MA, 02145. The website for the Beverly location can be found at https://eljaliscobeverly.com/

The Cornerstone Is Opening in the Former R.F. O'Sullivan & Son Space in Somerville

A new dining and drinking spot is on its way to Somerville, and it looks like it will be replacing a pub that has been closed for a little while now.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, The Cornerstone is looking to open on Beacon Street, taking over the space where R.F. O'Sullivan & Son has been. The website and social media for the upcoming spot indicate that it will be a restaurant and sports bar and that it plans to open soon, though little other information has been given as of yet.

R.F. O'Sullivan & Son opened last year, replacing R.F. O'Sullivan's (which had been in the space for more than 30 years) and having different owners; another R.F. O'Sullivan's which was run by the same family as the original in Somerville had been in Lynn, but that is no longer in business.

The address for Cornerstone is 282 Beacon Street, Somerville, MA, 02143. Its website will be at https://www.thecornerstonesomerville.com/

[December 6 update: A poster within Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants mentions that Cornerstone has soft-opened, while the website for the place indicates that the head chef is David Toraji Oshima, who comes from Yume Ga Arukara and Yume Wo Katare in Cambridge. (A menu for the restaurant is not yet up on their website.)]

A beloved ice cream shop that has been around for a very long time is on the market.

According to a source, Louie's Ice Cream in East Somerville is up for sale, with a Facebook post from the Davis Square group page confirming this, showing a sign out front at the Broadway shop mentioning "mixed use and business for sale." The last Facebook post from the ice cream shop included a "That's All, Folks!" logo back in early September, with the message saying that "Louie's is officially closed for the season. Thanks again for another great season!!" but there was no sign of this being a permanent closure at the time.

Louie's, which has been in business for nearly 40 years, offered such items as ice cream, sherbet, sundaes, banana boats, slush, and more.

The address for Louie's Ice Cream is 193 Broadway, Somerville, MA, 02145.

Fat Hen Is Opening within La Brasa in East Somerville

It looks like an Italian restaurant will be opening within an eclectic Somerville dining spot that features globally-inspired dishes.

A Twitter post from @kcbaskin of The Boston Globe indicates that Fat Hen is going to open inside La Brasa on Broadway in East Somerville, with the tweet mentioning that Michael Bergin (Sel de La Terre, L'Espalier) will be heading up the spot. (La Brasa is run by Daniel Bojorquez of the now-closed Sel de La Terre in Natick and Frank McClelland of L'Espalier.) An event page from La Brasa states that Fat Hen will be taking over the market/cafe space, having seating for 30 and a very small open kitchen, with offerings including fresh pasta and braised meats along with craft beers and "offbeat" Italian wines.

If all goes as planned, Fat Hen could be opening in the spring of 2016.

La Brasa is located at 124 Broadway, which is a few blocks east of the Route 28 intersection. Its website can be found at http://www.labrasasomerville.com/

Patsy's Pastry Shop in East Somerville Is Reopening

Last last month, we reported that an iconic pastry shop was going to be closing after nearly 50 years in business, though it was leaving the door open to a possible return. Now we have learned that this is indeed what will be happening.

Eater Boston is reporting that four days after shutting down, Patsy's Pastry Shop in East Somerville now has a sign up saying "We are closing for construction on May 4th. We'll reopen at this location when construction is complete." Previously, we had mentioned that although the Broadway shop was closing because a new structure with 19 apartment units was going to take over the space, co-owner Sal Ferrigno did say that they might consider reopening, and that they would have first crack at a ground-level space within the building that is set aside for retail.

Patsy's Pastry Shop first opened in 1968.

The address for Patsy's is 182 Broadway, Somerville, MA, 02145.

A post on the East Somerville Main Streets Facebook page indicates that Lotus Xpress will be opening on Broadway, moving into the space where KFC used to be. The website for Lotus Xpress is now up, with their menu showing mostly Taiwanese and Chinese fare, but there are also Thai, Tibetan, Mongolian, and Japanese dishes as well.

East End Grille Is Opening in East Somerville

It is no secret that 118 Broadway in East Somerville has been a space of interest of late for possible restaurants opening, and now it looks like things are finally starting to come together for a dining spot definitely opening there.

Confirming information in an email that we received several days ago, the Somerville Patch is reporting that the East End Grille is coming to 118 Broadway, which had been the home of Khoury's State Spa--and which the person behind La Brasa (which will be opening at 130 Broadway instead) and the folks behind Redbones in Davis Square (a proposal that apparently fell through) had looked at over recent times. The article mentions that one of the people behind the new eatery is a manager at Orleans restaurant in Davis Square, while the chef comes from the Ames Hotel in downtown Boston. The cuisine will mostly be traditional American fare with Southern influences, with a good number of vegetarian dishes available.

The Patch says that a complete renovation of the building is planned, with a possible opening sometime in the late summer or early fall.

[May 31, 2013 update: According to one of our readers, the East End Grille is now open.]

Redbones May Be Thinking of Opening a Restaurant in East Somerville

It looks like a popular BBQ restaurant in the Davis Square section of Somerville could be planning to open another dining spot, with this one possibly being in the East Somerville neighborhood of the city.

According to a neighborhood meeting flyer sent to us by one of our readers (and confirmed by the East Somerville Main Streets Facebook page), Redbones on Chester Street is looking at the space on 118 Broadway where Khoury's State Spa used to be. This is the same space that another new restaurant called La Brasa had been planning to move into, but has since decided to open at 130 Broadway instead. The neighborhood meeting on the potential opening of a restaurant by the Redbones folks will be held on January 30 at 6:00 PM at the 118 Broadway site.

[January 26, 2012 update: According to an update on the Grub Street Boston site, the rep for Redbones states that "the word on expansion is not right now, though occasionally we scout locations." The neighborhood flyer, however, mentions that "the potential tenant [of 118 Broadway] is Redbone's of Davis Square," and that the owner of Redbones "will be present to present his plan." More updates on this are surely on their way, so keep checking back.]

[April 25, 2012 update: Based on an article from the Somerville Patch, Redbones is no longer looking at the 118 Broadway space, as another restaurant will be moving in there instead.]

Redbones has been busy over the past year, opening a rib shack in Cambridge's Kendall Square as well as putting a food truck on the road.

The Redbones website can be found at http://redbones.com/
