The Charles Has Opened in Reading; Owner of Bunratty Tavern Is Behind the Place

Several months ago, it was reported that the person behind a suburban Irish pub was planning to expand into a former bakery space next door. Now we have learned more about the new spot, which opened for business over the weekend.

According to Eilish Carlyle-Havey of Bunratty Tavern in Reading, The Charles is now open next door in the old D'Amici's Bakery space, with the new restaurant featuring decor that is "classic American/Hollywood from around the 40s-50s" while also having a private back room with prints that go back more than 100 years showing how the space has changed over time. We have been told that The Charles features steak and seafood dishes along with pasta and some vegetarian items, while drinks include classic cocktails such as Vieux Carre, Old Fashioneds, and espresso martinis.

While The Charles opened its doors yesterday, it will not open back up until Wednesday, then it will close again for the holiday (Thursday and Friday) and reopen on Saturday and Sunday, at which point it will be open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday each week. (Brunch service will soon be added as well.)

Parent Company of Fuddruckers Announces Liquidation Plans

The future of a burger chain that was once headquartered in the Greater Boston location is now in doubt.

According to an article from Restaurant Business, Luby's--which is the parent company of Fuddruckers--has decided to liquidate via the sale of its assets, with the plan being to dissolve both the Fuddruckers and Luby's brands. The post mentions that this still needs the approval of the company's shareholders, though even if it is approved, it isn't known how this could affect locations of Fuddruckers in the Greater Boston area (in Reading and Saugus), as they appear to be independently owned. This is a developing story, so keep checking back for updates as they come in.

Fuddruckers is headquartered in Texas, but it once had its headquarters in Beverly and Danvers.

[September 11 update: It appears that the Reading and Saugus locations of Fuddruckers will not be affected by the planned liquidation of the parent company, as a pair of Facebook posts from the Reading page mention that it is "not going anywhere" and is indeed independently owned and operated, while another post states that the Saugus location reopens today (the Reading location has been open as well). Thanks to one of our sources for bringing this to our attention.]

A suburban Irish pub that has a spacious interior and an outdoor patio is going to be getting a bit larger, as it is taking over the space next door.

A message sent to us over the weekend indicates that Bunratty Tavern in Reading is expanding into the old D'Amici's Bakery space to its left, with the plan possibly being to have the new space used as a function room and also for overflow as a dining/cocktail section. (The new space will have a connection door to the original dining/drinking area.)

All three locations of D'Amici's Bakery in Reading, Melrose, and Lynn shut down last fall, while another outlet in Lynn closed earlier last year; Bunratty Tavern first opened its doors in 2015.

The Bunratty Tavern is 622 Main Street while the former D'Amici's Bakery space is 614 Main Street. Its website can be found at https://bunrattytavern.com/

It looks like a beloved local group of bakery-cafes has shut down its retail operations.

According to several sources, Swissbakers has closed all of its outlets, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this, saying that "To the best guests in the world. It's with a heavy heart that we must inform you that we have to close our doors" while a comment from them indicates that this indeed affects all locations, including shops in Boston's North Station, Cambridge's Harvard Square, Allston, and Reading. (Another branch had been at the Boston Public Market as well, but that one closed in October.) It is not known if Swissbakers will continue on in any form including wholesale and/or at farmers markets/events; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

D'Amici's Bakery Has Closed All of Its Locations

A local group of bakeries that first started out more than 25 years ago has apparently disappeared from the landscape.

According to several social media posts, including one within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, D'Amici's Bakery in Melrose and Lynn have closed, with the Melrose closure being confirmed by the Patch and the Lynn closure being mentioned on The REAL 'You Know You're From Lynn' Facebook group page. Other social media posts indicate that the Reading location of the bakery has shut down as well, including a recent post on the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants showing that the same "out of business" sign at the Melrose and Lynn locations is also shown at the Reading shop. (Phone calls to the Reading location are going unanswered this morning.)

D'Amici's Bakery was established in 1993 and at one point had four locations, including another outlet in Lynn that shut down earlier this year; the shops offered such items as breads, pastries, cookies, cakes, pies, sandwiches, and coffee. A Facebook post from one of the original owners indicates that the bakeries changed hands in 2017.

Portland Pie Co. in Reading Has Closed

A small group of pizza spots has gotten a bit smaller, as its sole Boston-area locations has shuttered with what appears to be no warning.

According to a source, Portland Pie Co. in Reading abruptly closed over the past few days, with several people on social media (including a poster on Twitter who took a picture of a sign out front) confirming that the Haven Street dining spot indeed shut down for good over the weekend. No reason has been given for the sudden closure of the pizzeria, with the restaurant's website simply removing the shop from its locations page.

Portland Pie Co. started out in Portland, ME, in 1997 and now has locations in Portland, Biddeford, Westbrook, Scarborough, and Brunswick, ME, along with Manchester and Nashua, NH. In addition to its build-your-own pizzas, the group of eateries also offers soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes, and calzones.

Oye's Restaurant and Bar to Move into Donatello's Space on Route 1 in Saugus

Another piece of the "old" Route 1 is disappearing, and a dining spot a few miles to the west is planning to take over the space.

According to an article in Wicked Local, the town of Saugus has given its approval for Oye's Restaurant &amp Bar to operate at 44 Broadway, taking over the space where Donatello's currently is. The post mentions that the space will receive only minor renovations, with the upcoming pan-Asian eatery modeling the concept after the original location of the restaurant, which is on Walkers Brook Drive in Reading. It is not yet known when Donatello's might close or when Oye's could open; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here. [October 2 update: According to a Facebook post from the restaurant, Donatello's is now closed, with its last day in operation being earlier this week.]

Donatello's first opened in the late 1980s, featuring a mix of old-fashioned Italian-American and traditional Italian fare in an upscale environment. It is one of a few longtime spots on the Saugus stretch of Route 1 that have either closed over the past several years or are slated to close, including Hilltop Steak House, which shut down in October of 2013, and the Route 1 Miniature Golf/Dairy Castle complex in Saugus, which could be closing either later this year or in 2016.

The website for Donatello's is at http://www.donatello-restaurant.com/ while the website for the original Oye's in Reading can be found at http://www.oyesreading.com/

[June 13, 2016 update: Nearly 10 months after first reporting on this, Oye's has still not opened and now the board of selectmen want to see progress made, according to a new Saugus Advertiser article. The post indicates that the restaurant now has plans to include a sushi bar on the first floor and a service bar on the second floor--and they are working with a building inspector--but the board thought that the place would be open by now and are concerned about the length of time that its license remains unused. Oye's is now looking to open this fall, and the board has asked to meet with the restaurant on June 22 to get specific details on its progress.]

Bunratty Tavern in Reading in Hot Water with Customers, Board of Selectmen

A brand new tavern north of Boston is facing scrutiny on two separate issues only a week after opening its doors.

The Reading Advocate is reporting that Bunratty Tavern in Reading has had to go on social media to defend its policy of not allowing children in the place after certain hours, while also dealing with the Board of Selectmen on how it is serving food. The former issue--in which the spot only allows those under 21 to be in the place until 9:00 PM on weekdays and 7:00 PM on weekends--is facing criticism from some customers, though the Board of Selectmen says that Bunratty Tavern is within its right to have such a policy. What the board does have a problem with is the fact that the spot is not offering a full menu at all times, which violates the town policy for places that serve alcohol. (Reading Town Manager Bob LeLacheur says that the board "didn't expect this," though it is not known what action might be taken, either by the tavern or the town.)

The address for Bunratty Tavern is 622 Main Street, Reading, MA, 01867. Its website can be found at http://bunrattytavern.com/
