The team behind an award-winning Mexican restaurant in Dorchester and a dining and drinking spot in the South End will be shutting down the latter as the former gets ready to expand into its space.
Boston Magazine is reporting that Yellow Door Taqueria in Dorchester's Lower Mills is planning to open a second location, taking over the Lion's Tail space in the Ink Block area of the South End. The article says that Lion's Tail will be open until December 30, at which point the space will apparently go through renovations for a couple of months, with Yellow Door opening in the Harrison Avenue space in February.
Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphys, Brian O'Donnell, and Taniya Nayak are involved with both Yellow Door Taqueria and Lion's Tail, and Boston Magazine says that general manager Andrew Toto will be a managing partner involved with the expansion of Yellow Door while Lion's Tail partner Jarek Mountain will help with the beverage program and executive chef Carolina Curtin will head up the kitchens of both locations of the Mexican eatery.
Lion's Tail first opened in late 2016 while the original location of Yellow Door Taqueria opened in the summer of 2017, with Boston Magazine awarding Yellow Door "best tacos" for 2019.
The address for Lion's Tail (and the upcoming location of Yellow Door Taqueria) is 300 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA, 02118. The website for the former is at https://www.lionstailboston.com/ and the website for the latter is at https://www.yellowdoortaqueria.com/
[February 11 update: The Tables section of The Boston Globe mentions that Yellow Door Taqueria opens in the Lion's Tail space tomorrow (Wednesday, February 12).]

The Bowery Bar Is Replacing ester in Dorchester's Lower Mills
by Marc Hurwitz
A restaurant in Dorchester that is known in part for its terraced patio is being replaced by a new spot, and it appears to have at least an indirect connection to a number of other dining and drinking places in the Boston area.
According to a source, The Bowery Bar is seeking to open in the space in Lower Mills where ester currently resides, with the name of the parent company--Cool Hand Luke Inc.--being run by local restaurateur Julian Bolger, according to a Bizapedia page. This jibes with similar information given to us by someone in the restaurant industry yesterday, along with chatter on social media indicating that a new restaurant would be taking over the Dorchester Avenue space. Bolger has been involved with such restaurants and bars as Lucy's American Tavern in Dorchester, The Punk & Poet and The Broadway in South Boston, and Cityside in Brighton, along with Tavern in the Square, which has a number of locations in the Greater Boston area.
ester first opened in the spring of 2014, taking over the space where Ledge Kitchen and Drinks had once been; the restaurant--which includes a large outdoor dining area out back--focuses mostly on creative comfort food and New American fare.
The address for ester (and the upcoming Bowery Bar) is 2261 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, MA, 02124.
[January 30 update: The Dorchester Reporter states that ester plans to close on February 11, at which point the space will be renovated for a period of at least two months. There is still no word on the exact type of restaurant that will open in its space, though the article does say that Julian Bolger and his team will change the name and the concept (there is no mention of the name "The Bowery," so that may possibly be a working name).]
[February 8 update: A Facebook post from the restaurant confirms that ester is closing on Sunday, February 11, and that it is open normal hours until then.]
[May 8 update: According to a job post within the Craigslist site, The Bowery Bar is opening soon and is currently hiring for all positions, with the listing saying that its menu will feature a "unique 'scratch' approach to American fare featuring an extensive beer selection from New England and the around the world, as well as a creative cocktail and wine menu."]
[July 1 update: A check on the place indicates that The Bowery Bar opens tomorrow (Monday, July 2).]

Yellow Door Taqueria Is Opening in Dorchester's Lower Mills
It looks like the person behind a number of Boston-area restaurants is opening a new spot in Dorchester.
According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, a restaurant tentatively named Taqueria is planning to open in the Lower Mills neighborhood, with the restaurant including a dining room and bar, and the manager mentioned in the hearing notice being Brian O'Donnell; a source tells us that this is the same Brian O'Donnell who is a partner/owner of a variety of dining spots in and around Boston, including the Lower Mills Tavern which opened a few months ago and is just up the street from where Taqueria would open.
Very little is known about the proposed Taqueria at this point in time; as soon as we find out more (most likely after the hearing takes place next week) we will post an update here.
The address for this upcoming restaurant in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester is 2297 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, MA, 02124.
[April 10, 2017 update: The Improper Bostonian mentions that the new restaurant from Brian O'Donnell--and business partner Ken Casey of Dropkick Murphys--will tentatively be called Antique Taqueria and it will feature ceviches, tacos, mezcal, and tequila. The post says that Colton Coburn-Wood of the nearby Lower Mills Tavern will be heading up the kitchen and that he will offer 3-5 ceviches and 10-12 tacos each day along with daily specials.]
[June 9, 2017 update: The Tables section of The Boston Globe states that the name of the new place in Lower Mills will actually be Yellow Door Taqueria, and we are told that is could be opening in the next week or two.]
[July 19, 2017 update: Boston Magazine says that Yellow Door Taqueria plans to open on Monday, July 24.]

Lower Mills Tavern Is Opening in Dorchester
Last year, we reported that a new restaurant and bar would be coming to Dorchester, taking over the space where a decades-old pub had been. Now we have learned that the place is just about ready to open.
According to a post on its Facebook page from earlier this week, the Lower Mills Tavern is about two weeks away from opening in the former Lower Mills Pub space on Dorchester Avenue, with a source indicating that the dining and drinking spot may have had a preview/soft opening this week. No specific opening date has been given as of yet, so keep checking back for updates.
[May 27 update: The Dorchester Reporter mentions that Lower Mills Tavern officially opens next week.]
[June 2 update: A phone call placed to the eating and drinking spot indicates that Lower Mills Tavern has opened.]
The team behind the Lower Mills Tavern--which looks to be a family-friendly neighborhood restaurant and bar--includes Ken Casey of Dropkick Murphys, who is also behind McGreevey's in Boston's Back Bay. Others mentioned earlier include Brian O'Donnell, who was is apparently a "key partner," and HGTV host Taniya Nayak, who is married to O'Donnell.
The address for the Lower Mills Tavern is 2269 Dorchester Avenue, Boston, MA, 02124. Its website will be at http://www.lowermillstavern.com/

Confirmed: Lower Mills Pub in Dorchester Will Become Lower Mills Tavern
[Ed note: This article was updated several times to reflect new information given, including confirmation of the buyers and a new name given.]
It looks like a decades-old dive bar in Dorchester is going to be sold--though some legal issues need to be worked out first.
An article in the Dorchester Reporter states that the people behind the Lower Mills Pub on Dorchester Avenue have an agreement to sell the place to a "prominent Boston restaurant operator," but the Boston Licensing Board summoned those involved with the bar to a hearing yesterday because it has concerns about allowing the sale to go through. According to the board, the watering hole has not legally had a manager for the past five years--when the bar's co-owner passed away without leaving a will--and the spot also owes the city approximately $80,000 in back taxes. The Lower Mills Pub is now asking for a continuance of the hearing for eight more weeks to clear things up, which the board plans to look into tomorrow.
The Lower Mills Pub has been open for 35 years, according to the article.
[April 14 update: A new article in the Dorchester Reporter states that the Lower Mills Pub is indeed being sold--with the sale possibly being finalized later this month--and that the team involved in the purchase includes Ken Casey of Dropkick Murphys, who is also behind McGreevey's in Boston's Back Bay. Others involved with the purchase include Brian O'Donnell, who is a "key partner," and HGTV host Taniya Nayak, who is married to O'Donnell and will help design the new spot. The article says that the as-of-yet unnamed place will likely be a family-friendly neighborhood restaurant and bar with Irish music and acoustic bands possibly playing there.]
[April 27 update: According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, the name of the proposed spot will tentatively be Lower Mills Tavern, with the city looking into the request for a license transfer this Wednesday (April 29).]
[December 29 update: A new licensing board page confirms that the now-closed Lower Mills Pub will indeed be called Lower Mills Tavern, and that the license transfer will be looked at on January 6.]
The address for the Lower Mills Pub (and upcoming Lower Mills Tavern) is 2269 Dorchester Avenue, Boston, MA, 02124. Its website can be found at http://www.lowermillspub.com/

Mrs. Jones in Dorchester's Lower Mills Could Reopen If a Buyer Is Found
We recently reported that a Southern-style soul food eatery in Dorchester had shut its doors. Now we have learned that it could be reopening, though it depends on whether a buyer can be found for it.
The Dorchester Reporter states that the now-closed Mrs. Jones on Dorchester Avenue in Lower Mills could return under new management, but it needs someone to purchase the place. The article says that the owner of the dining spot had to close the place due to health issues, but has asked the landlord to act as a broker to find someone to buy it. At least 20 prospective owners have been interviewed so far, according to the Reporter, with the plan ultimately being to keep it as a soul food spot.
Mrs. Jones had been featured on our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) as a restaurant to go to for such items as corn bread, macaroni and cheese, deep-fried turkey, brisket, pork chops, and more. The review can be found below:

Mrs. Jones in Dorchester's Lower Mills Has Closed
[Ed Note: This article was updated on August 4 to reflect confirmation that the restaurant has indeed shut its doors.]
It looks like a Southern-style soul food eatery in Dorchester has closed.
Several checks on the restaurant over the past few weeks indicate that Mrs. Jones on Dorchester Avenue in Lower Mills is shuttered, with several sources in the area saying that it has indeed been dark and locked up over recent days. A phone call placed to the dining spot yesterday seems to indicate that this is likely a permanent closure, as their number is now disconnected.
[August 4 update: A note from the Facebook page of the Lower Mills Merchants Association confirms the closing of Mrs. Jones, as there is now a "For Sale" sign out front.]

ester Is Opening in Ledge Kitchen and Drinks Space in Dorchester
A restaurant in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester is being sold to a new owner, with the plan being to open a new dining spot with a different name in the space.
The Dorchester Reporter confirms what we heard last week, that Ledge Kitchen & Drinks on Dorchester Avenue will be taken over by Eleanor Arpino--who is a former general manager at Davio's in downtown Boston--and several business partners. The article says that the new restaurant will be called ester and that it would be a family-friendly spot offering "contemporary comfort food." It appears that outdoor patio out back will remain in place as well as the 140-seat indoor dining area, according to the Reporter. Depending on how the licensing and permitting process goes, the new eatery could be opening sometime in the late winter or early spring of 2014.
[February 16, 2014 update: The Dorchester Reporter states that the Ledge has officially closed.]
[April 3, 2014 update: An email sent today states that ester plans to open this Saturday (April 5).]
Our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) has written about the Ledge in a blog review, with highlights including the lobster roll, burger, brick chicken, and macaroni and cheese, as well as the aforementioned back patio. The review can be found at the link below:

Sweet Life Bakery and Cafe Is Opening in Dorchester's Lower Mills
A new bakery and cafe is on its way to the Lower Mills section of Dorchester, and it will be moving into the space where an eclectic restaurant had been until earlier this year.
According to EveryBlock Boston, Sweet Life Bakery and Cafe has received a business license to open on Dorchester Avenue, taking over the former Common Ground Cafe spot. (Common Ground, which had been run by a confederation of religious communities called the Twelve Tribes, closed this past spring.) An earlier Boston Globe article mentions that Sweet Life will feature house-made baked goods and will also have a lunch menu.
[September 17, 2012 update: The Dorchester Reporter states that Sweet Life Bakery and Cafe is now open for business, though the main gist of the article is about Sweet Life co-owner Michael Ahern being charged with motor vehicle homicide, OUI, operating to endanger, and speeding after Doan Bui was run down and killed while on his bike on Morrissey Boulevard this past Friday. (Ahern is also a partner at The Ledge in Lower Mills and Slate Bar and Grill in Boston.) Thanks to Grub Street Boston for bringing this to our attention.]

Common Ground Cafe in Dorchester Has Closed
An eclectic restaurant in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester that was owned by a confederation of religious communities has closed its doors.
According to the Dorchester Reporter, the Common Ground Cafe on Dorchester Avenue is shuttered, with a "For Lease" sign in the window. A check on the place has confirmed its closure, and a large dumpster is out front, presumably there as part of the cleaning-out process. The article mentions that the restaurant "temporarily" closed a little more than two months ago, with the Twelve Tribes community (the folks who own the eatery) indicating that it was only closed for renovations. Twelve Tribes subsequently stated that it is indeed closed for good, though the group is looking to reopen elsewhere, possibly somewhere in Dorchester.
The Common Ground Cafe was a dark, cozy dining spot that shared its space with a natural food market (also closed now). The food offered on the menu was mostly healthy and organic fare, including several sandwich options as well as pizza. Our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) has a featured review on Common Ground, which can be found at the link below.

The Ledge, a gastropub that will have its grand opening on Friday, August 14, has already been open to private parties this week, as it has had a "soft" opening over the past couple of days. The restaurant has taken over the spot where Donovan's Village Tavern used to be, in the heart of this quiet Dorchester neighborhood on the Milton line.
The Ledge has a full bar along the right side of the restaurant, a dining area partitioned off from the bar along the left side, and additional seating around the bar area. The restaurant will also have an outdoor dining area out back.
The menu at The Ledge features mostly traditional American cuisine and pub grub, including French onion soup, flash-fried calamari, a peach salad, crab cakes, burgers, lobster ravioli, pork chops, steak frites, macaroni and cheese, and a variety of flatbread pizzas. The restaurant's bar includes between 15 and 20 different brews on tap. Prices for entrees are mostly in the teens, with dishes topping out at around $25.
The address for this new restaurant and bar in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester is: The Ledge, 2261 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, MA, 02124.
