Lockheart Is Opening in Newton Centre

A new location of a restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston that has Southwestern influences is on the way, with this one also being west of Boston and residing within an historic space.

According to a post within the Newton Real Estate Forum Facebook page, Lockheart restaurant is planning to open in Newton Centre, moving into the former train station on Union Street that dates back to the 1800s. The post mentions that the new location of the dining spot will have seating for 86 inside and another 9 outside, and based on the Wellesley location of the restaurant, the new location could offer such options as tacos, nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas, empanadas, chili, bowls, and more.

The Wellesley location of Lockheart opened on Central Street in 2022.

Formosa Bun & Dumpling Factory Opens in Newton Centre

Last spring, it was reported that a Taiwanese restaurant featuring dumpling and more was coming to the western suburbs of Boston, and now we have learned that it has debuted.

A message sent by Leah Klein of City Living Boston states that Formosa Bun & Dumpling Factory is now open in Newton Centre, and as mentioned in an earlier article here, it has taken over the former Jake's Falafel Corner space on Beacon Street. A BC Heights article confirms its opening, indicating that the new dining spot offers Taiwanese street food items, with the menu for the place showing options such as dumplings, bao, ramen, yakisoba, and beef noodle soup.

Formosa Bun & Dumpling Factory Plans to Open in the Former Jake's Falafel Corner Space in Newton Centre

A Taiwanese restaurant is on its way to the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Formosa Bun & Dumpling Factory is planning to open in Newton Centre, taking over the space on Beacon Street where Jake's Falafel Corner had been. A What Now article mentions that the upcoming eatery will focus on Taiwanese street food items, including steamed buns, fried bao, and grilled sausage, and that it hopes to open before the end of this month if all goes well.

Zodiac Is Replacing Cafe St. Petersburg in Newton Centre

An Eastern European restaurant west of Boston is in the process of changing into a new Eastern European dining spot under different ownership.

According to an article in The Newton Beacon, Zodiac is going to be taking over the Cafe St. Petersburg space in Newton Centre, with the place having new owners, look, and a "little bit of a different concept," according to Genna Itskin, who is one of the owners. The new restaurant will offer Russian food, though Itskin says in the article that "We Americanized some traditional Russian food to suit American tastes, like Chinese restaurants do" in order to satisfy American customers, with the menu including such options as blini, beef stroganoff, chicken kiev, and less familiar dishes such as forshmak (herring mousse, rice chips, caviar, scallion, and chicken tartare) and pickled zakuska (sour cabbage with tomatoes, cucumbers, and mushrooms), while drink options will include Ukrainian beer and black currant infused vodka along with beer, cider, and more.

Zodiac will be open for dinner Tuesday through Friday and brunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays.

Stella Opens in Newton

Earlier this year, it was reported that an Italian restaurant in Boston was planning to be reborn west of the city, and now we have learned that it is up and running.

According to an Instagram post from the place, Stella has opened in Newton, moving into a space on Commonwealth Avenue on the northern edge of Newton Centre and being run by Evan Deluty who was also behind the original restaurant. A boston.com article mentions that this incarnation of the dining spot is smaller than that of its space on Washington Street in the South End where it resided for 15 years until closing in 2020, as it includes a total of 15 seats and does not have a bar, though it looks like a beer and wine license could eventually be acquired.

In addition to Italian dishes, the Newton location of Stella also offers some Jewish items, including matzo ball soup, cheese blintzes, and potato latkes.

Union Street Restaurant in Newton Centre Is Closing

A longtime restaurant and bar that briefly closed six years ago before reopening under new ownership is getting ready to shut down permanently.

According to a message sent from @IrishEyesPhoto1, Union Street Restaurant in Newton Centre has sent an email out saying that it is going to be closing its doors for good at the end of the month, though no reason has been given for its decision to shutter as of yet. Union Street, which first opened in the late 1980s, went through an ownership change in the summer of 2017, with renovations being made to the space at the time; the place has been known for its pub grub and classic American fare while also being a venue for live music and functions.

Stella Plans to Reopen in Newton

A South End restaurant that shut down as the pandemic first took hold is returning, though in a new space west of Boston.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, Stella is planning to reopen in Newton, moving into a space on Commonwealth Avenue on the northern edge of Newton Centre, a few blocks east of Centre Street. The restaurant, which had been on Washington Street in Boston's South End for 15 years until closing in the spring of 2020, was known for its seasonal Italian dishes and extensive wine list.

If all goes as planned, Stella will open in its new space this spring.

Avenue Deli in Lexington Opens New Location in Newton

A deli in the northwest suburbs has been joined by another location a few miles to the south.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Avenue Deli in Lexington Center has expanded to a new outlet in Newton, taking over the space on Beacon Street that had been home to Caprese Cafe & Pizzeria. The menu for the new spot includes a wide variety of sandwiches including corned beef, pastrami, egg salad, salami, bologna, and liverwurst, along with soups, salads, pizza, fish and chips, chicken fingers, and more.

Avenue Deli was established in 2009, coming under new ownership in 2013; it had once been located in Watertown.

Galit's Treats Cafe & Bakery in Newton Centre Is Apparently Closing

A coffee shop west of Boston that features Israeli items appears to be shutting down.

Based on a tweet from @BostonHanSolo, Galit's Treats Cafe & Bakery in Newton Centre is closing, as a screenshot of a post from owner Galit Grutman says that "After 6 years of baking and enjoying every minute of it, I've decided to close our shop and spend some more time with my family." The note indicates that the Beacon Street store plans to shut its doors after business hours on January 28.

Galit's Treats Cafe & Bakery has offered such items as rugelach, babka, cupcakes, burekas, muffins, scones, croissants, sandwiches, quiche, challah bread, coffee, hot chocolate, and more since opening in 2017.

Jumbo Seafood in Newton Centre Has Closed As It Starts "New Chapter" in Boston's Chinatown

A Chinese restaurant in the western suburbs that was known in part for its seafood has shut down, though its name lives on in downtown Boston.

According to a source, Jumbo Seafood in Newton Centre is no longer in business, with a note on the website of the Langley Road spot saying the following:

Leaving Newton was a tough decision to make and we want to thank all of our customers and neighbors for welcoming us to Newton Center nearly two decades ago....While we are sad to announce that we are officially closing our doors in Newton, this is not a goodbye, but rather a see you very soon. We are very excited to share that Jumbo Seafood will be entering a new chapter in the place where we started it all - Chinatown, Boston.

Jumbo Seafood is now open in the former New Jumbo Seafood space on Hudson Street in Chinatown, with a note within the website of that restaurant indicating that "the original owner of Jumbo Seafood" has indeed returned to that space and is featuring a Hong Kong-style menu with seafood along with such options as pork and chicken dishes.

Jamie's on Union in Newton Centre Has Closed

A dining spot that resided within an historic space west of Boston has shut down.

According to a source, Jamie's on Union in Newton Centre is no longer in business, with a note within the website for the restaurant saying the following:

We would like to thank all of our loyal customers. Without your support, we would never have lasted all these years. This past Friday, we served our last meals and locked our doors after lunch, for good. We say goodbye for now. We are grateful for what we had, but the time has come to move on. We thank you all. Change is good.

Jamie's on Union replaced Deluxe Station Diner in September of 2020, with the two places being under the same ownership; the eatery mostly offered a mix of diner food and classic American fare. (The building in which Jamie's was housed is a former railroad station that dates back to the 1800s.)

Ellana's Kitchen & More in Newton Centre Is Closing

A Newton dining spot that features a mix of cuisines is shutting down.

According to a couple of sources, Ellana's Kitchen & More in Newton Centre is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the Pelham Street eatery saying the following:

With great sadness, we would like to announce that we have decided to permanently close Ellana's Kitchen. Unfortunately, the owner of the building has a new project for it, so we must hand over the premises. After analyzing our options, we think it is our time to complete this period of our lives. The last day that we will be open to the public is Sunday, June 5th of 2022.

Ellana's first opened in 2017, taking over the space that had been home to Inna's Kitchen before it moved to a nearby location. The eatery has been known for its Venezuelan and Mediterranean fare, including such items as arepas, empanadas, falafel, chicken shawarma, and baklava.

Tatte Is Opening in Newton Centre

A local group of bakeries and cafes continues to expand, with a new location soon coming to the western suburbs.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page, Tatte is opening in Newton Centre, with a Patch article saying that it will be opening in the former Panera space on Centre Street. Once it opens, the new location of Tatte will join nearly 20 others including in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and the Washington, DC area.

As was pointed out in the Facebook post, Tatte replacing a location of Panera is interesting in part because Panera once held a majority stake in Tatte.

Baramor in Newton Centre Is Debuting a Pop-Up Beer Garden; Will Include Distillery Cocktail Takeovers

A neighborhood restaurant and bar in the western suburbs is setting up a temporary beer garden which should also be of interest to lovers of spirits and mixed drinks as well.

According to a press release, Baramor in Newton Centre is launching an outdoor beer garden starting Thursday, June 3, with the rotating pop-up taking place on Thursdays from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM throughout the summer. The first pop-up on June 3 features Roslindale's Distraction Brewing while Exhibit A in Framingham will be onsite on June 10 and True North in Ipswich will be there on June 17. In addition, distillery cocktail takeovers will take place as well, though no names have been mentioned as of yet.

Baramor first opened in the spring of 2019, taking over the space that had been home to Terry O'Reilly's Pub.

Tous Les Jours to Open in Newton Centre

A group of French-Asian bakeries and cafes based in South Korea is planning to open another Boston-area location.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Tous Les Jours is going to be opening in the former Murray's Liquors space on Beacon Street in Newton Centre, with an earlier Wicked Local article saying at the time that the new store could debut in June. Once it opens, the new Tous Les Jours will join others locally in Allston, Burlington, and Natick, and another outlet is in the works for Malden as well.

Tous Les Jours offers a variety of baked goods, pastries, and other items such as sandwiches, smoothies, coffee, and tea.

Coco Ramen Is Opening in Newton Centre

A new ramen shop is on its way to the western suburbs, and it appears to have a connection to a Thai restaurant next door.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Coco Ramen is planning to open in Newton Centre, with a photo posted showing that it will be opening to the right of Coconut Newton on Beacon Street. An earlier licensing hearing notice within the city's website shows that the manager listed is Fonthip Suntornnut, who is one of the people behind Coconut Newton, while the poster in the group page says that the permit out front mentions something about a sushi bar, though it appears that Coco Ramen will focus at least in part on ramen.

Team Behind Sycamore, Little Big Diner, Buttonwood to Open Jinny's Pizzeria in Newton Centre

A new pizza spot is coming to Newton, and the people behind a trio of nearby restaurants are involved.

According to a source, Jinny's Pizzeria is opening in Newton Centre, with the address shown indicating that it will be taking over the former Cupola space on Centre Street. Our source mentions that the new eatery will have an ownership connection with Sycamore, Little Big Diner, Buttonwood, all of which reside in Newton, with the website for the place saying that it will be a "neighborhood pizzeria" that plans to open sometime this winter.

Cupola closed this past winter after being in business for a bit more than two years; the dining spot featured "Italian fast food" including soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes, pizza, risotto, and more.

Deluxe Station Diner in Newton Centre Is Now Jamie's on Union

A diner within an historic space in the western suburbs of Boston has morphed into a new restaurant.

According to a source, Jamie's on Union is now open in Newton Centre, taking over the space in the old railroad station on Union Street that had been home to the Deluxe Station Diner. It appears that the ownership remains the same, as the website for the new eatery says that "We've made a change, but change is good. Our new name is Jamie's on Union. We have remodeled and updated the interior, upgraded our bar, and have updated our menu." The new spot also features diner food along with American classics, with its menu showing such items as eggs benedict, challah French toast, reubens, burgers, fish and chips, steak tips, and more.

The railroad station in which Jamie's on Union is housed dates back to the 1800s.

SushiCo Is Replacing Central in Newton Centre

[Ed note: This article was updated to reflect a new name given for the place.]

A restaurant in the western suburbs that focuses on small plates with global influences appears to be going away, and it will be morphing into what could be a sushi spot.

According to a source, Central in Newton Centre is becoming a new restaurant, with an email from the owners saying that it will be called SushiCo (the original name had been Ukiyo, but that has been changed). This is a rebranding/reconcept that is under the same ownership as Central, and the email we received says that the new restaurant should open soon, though no opening date has been given as of yet.

Central, which first opened in 2016 in the former Appetito space, had been temporarily closed since March when the coronavirus outbreak led to a restaurant shutdown where dining spots could only be open for takeout/delivery.

Thistle & Leek Is Replacing Comedor in Newton Centre

An eclectic suburban restaurant that focused on a cuisine that is difficult to find in the Boston area has shut down, and a new dining and drinking spot that was first mentioned earlier this year is taking over the space.

According to a source, Comedor in Newton Centre has closed its doors, with a Facebook post from the Union Street eatery saying that "all good things must come to an end. It was a difficult decision to make, but we have decided to close the restaurant and allow for a talented couple to come into the space and share their vision with you." The new restaurant that the Comedor folks are referring to is Thistle & Leek, a "refined" gastropub with Spanish and Italian influences; the people behind the upcoming spot are Kate and Trevor Smith, who have worked at a number of well-known restaurants over the years, including Coppa, Craigie Street Bistrot, and Toro in the Boston area and Gramercy Tavern and Le Bernardin in New York City.

Comedor first opened in the fall of 2014, offering a variety of Chilean dishes, including both small plates and full meals.
