Nusr-et Steakhouse Will Not Be Returning to Boston

Last summer, it was reported that the Boston location of a group of trendy steakhouses said goodbye to its space, though at the time, a relocation of the restaurant was being considered. Now we have learned that this won't be happening after all.

According to a press release, the Nusr-et Steakhouse brand announced "significant changes in the USA" today, officially closing its Boston restaurant rather than moving to a new space while also making plans to refurbish their restaurants in New York, Miami, and Las Vegas and continuing operations in Beverly Hills and Dallas. The release also mentions that outlets of Nusr-et will be opening globally, including in Rome, Athens, Sao Paulo, and Mexico City along with the Far East (with a particular focus on China), while locations of Saltbae Burger are in the works for airports around the world.

Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) first opened the Boston location of Nusr-et Steakhouse in 2020, taking over the former Nahita/Liquid Art House space on Arlington Street.

A brand new omakase-style sushi spot has come to Boston.

According to a post from @streetsofboston, Wa Shin is now open in the Bay Village section of the city, moving into a space on Stuart Street near Park Plaza. The website indicates that the new restaurant will offer an omakase menu in two sections of the dining spot--the Hinoki Counter Experience which is an "intimate and immersive setting" and the Dining Experience which is "a comfortable table arrangement"--with both offering what will be an approximately 18-course meal (the website says the Dining Experience setting will be coming soon).

The address for Wa Shin is 222 Stuart Street, Boston, MA, 02116 Its website can be found at https://washinboston.com/

Nusr-et Steakhouse Space in Downtown Boston Is for Lease; the Restaurant May Open in a New Location

It looks like the Boston location of a group of trendy steakhouses is saying farewell to its space, as the space is now on the market.

According to a source, the Nusr-et Steakhouse space on Arlington Street is for lease, with a Boston Realty Advisors page showing photos of the restaurant while saying "turn-key restaurant space for lease" and including a link to a brochure and another link with additional information. Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) first opened the Boston location of Nusr-et Steakhouse in 2020, taking over the space where Nahita had been, and before that, Liquid Art House; the restaurant is located on the southern edge of Park Plaza near where Bay Village, the Back Bay, and the South End meet.

The address for Nusr-et Steakhouse--which remains open for now--is 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

[August 21 update: A spokesperson for Nusr-Et tells us the following: "We are currently considering relocating the Nusr-Et restaurant in Boston. No decisions have been made at this time. We remain committed to our USA locations in Beverly Hills, Dallas, Miami, and New York and are continuing to execute our growth plan with both the Nusr-Et and SaltBae brands around the world."]

Nusr-et Steakhouse in Boston Has Reopened (But with Conditions)

A high-end steakhouse that opened in Boston two weekends ago only to be shut down a week later has opened back up once again, though the place is apparently on a short leash.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Nusr-et Steakhouse was allowed to reopen yesterday and as of last night it was indeed open, based on a post from boston.com. The Arlington Street restaurant was shut down by the city's licensing board last weekend due to multiple violations that included social distancing issues, blocked fire exits, refrigerators that were too warm, and dishwashers using water that was not warm enough. Yesterday, the licensing board said that Nusr-et Steakhouse could open back up, but there are now rules in place, including the fact that the staff has to get rid of any people congregating outside (whether in lines or simply loitering) and they can't allow people to come in without masks, while Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae)--who is behind the restaurant--has submitted a "security and operations" plan that says he will no longer pose for photos with patrons as the pandemic continues, nor will he post pictures of himself with customers on his Instagram account while the coronavirus remains a public-health emergency.

The address for Nusr-et Steakhouse is 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for all locations of the restaurant is at https://www.nusr-et.com.tr/

Nusr-et Steakhouse in Boston Closed by Licensing Board for Multiple Violations; Hearings Scheduled for Tuesday

A high-end steakhouse that opened in Boston last weekend has been shut down by the city due to several violations including at least one that is COVID-related.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Nusr-et Steakhouse is currently shuttered, with a note out front saying that the Arlington Street dining spot has been closed by order of the the city's licensing board. UH mentions that two hearings on the matter are scheduled to take place tomorrow, with the first one looking into a violation of a state order that bans lines outside of restaurants because of the coronavirus, while the second hearing will focus on two fire exits being blocked. In addition, Nusr-et Steakhouse apparently did not obtain a health permit to operate, while other issues brought up by an ISD health inspector include refrigerators that were too warm and dishwashers using water that was not warm enough. (The post does mention a follow-up inspection indicated that nearly all issues have been resolved, though the dishwaters were still apparently not set high enough.)

In addition to the violations mentioned by Universal Hub, Boston Globe also mentions that there were reports of customers and workers not wearing masks at Nusr-et Steakhouse (including people reportedly standing around the bar and host areas without masks), while many tables appeared to be only three feet apart. The Globe mentions that City Councilor Ed Flynn is unhappy with word of the multiple violations, saying in an email that "It is outrageous that this restaurant continues to place the public health of thousands at risk....This restaurant is not a good neighbor to the Bay Village neighborhood. The restaurant is more interested in making money than the public health of the people of Boston. I will ask the city Licensing Board to suspend the license indefinitely. I have zero tolerance for this reckless behavior."

Nusr-et Steakhouse debuted on September 18, with Turkish chef, restaurateur, and Internet sensation Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) being behind it.

The address for Nusr-et Steakhouse is 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for all locations of the restaurant is at https://www.nusr-et.com.tr/

[September 30 update: Universal Hub reports that Nusr-et Steakhouse will remain closed at least through tomorrow (Thursday, October 1), when the licensing board will decide whether to lift the liquor-license suspension and allow the restaurant to reopen. The post also mentions that an ISD health inspector has fined the place $300 for violations of both city and state social-distancing guidelines. (In referring to the violations, corporate executive Ufuk Soyturk told the board in one of the hearings yesterday that "We aren't making any excuses, we should have done a better job.")]

Nusr-et Steakhouse Opens in Boston

A group of high-end steakhouses has officially expanded to downtown Boston, and the person behind it is known in part for his style of seasoning meat.

As reported here earlier, Nusr-et Steakhouse is opening in the former Nahita/Liquid Art House space on Arlington Street opens today, with Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) saying in an Instagram post earlier this week, "Please wish me good luck for grand opening Nusr-Et [Boston] this weekend." Based on Gökçe's other locations (including one in New York), expect to see a variety of steak and lamb dishes along with burgers, meatballs, sausages, and more on its menu. Gökçe is a Turkish chef and restaurateur whose style of sprinkling salt on meat went viral on the Internet a few years back, both via memes and video.

The space in which Nusr-et Steakhouse is taking over had been home to Nahita, a restaurant with Latin-Asian and Turkish influences that closed last fall; Liquid Art House, which was a combination high-end restaurant and art gallery, had previously been in the space until the fall of 2017.

The address for Nusr-et Steakhouse is 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for all locations can be found at https://www.nusr-et.com.tr/

Nusr-et Steakhouse to Open in Former Nahita/Liquid Art House Space in Boston

A new location of a group of steakhouses is on its way to a space where Boston's Back Bay and Bay Village meet, and a Turkish chef and restaurateur whose style of seasoning meat has became an Internet meme is behind the place.

According to a source, Nusr-et Steakhouse is opening on Arlington Street, moving into the space where Nahita had been (and before that, Liquid Art House), while a job post within the Craigslist site confirms this, saying that an open hiring event was held at the site yesterday. There had been some talk that Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) might be opening a restaurant in that space, as Eater Boston mentioned earlier that Gökçe was apparently seen at the site late one night in December. (An update to the Eater article also confirmed that the restaurant would be coming to the city.) Based on its other locations, the Boston outlet of Nusr-et Steakhouse could be offering a variety of steak and lamb dishes along with meatballs, burgers, sausage, and more.

Nusret Gökçe rose to fame in 2017, thanks to a video showing him sprinkling salt on meat; the video has spawned countless memes since being released.

The address for upcoming location of Nusr-et Steakhouse will be 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for the other locations can be found at https://www.nusr-et.com.tr/en/home.aspx

[September 15 update: A tweet from @JeremyKrantz indicates (via an Instagram post from @nusr_et) that Nusr-et Steakhouse plans to open in Boston this weekend.]

Nahita in Boston Has Closed; May Be Replaced by New Concept

A fine-dining spot on the eastern edge of Boston's Back Bay has shut down, though it looks like a new restaurant could be replacing it at some point.

According to several sources, including a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Nahita on Arlington Street is locked up and dark and is no longer taking reservations. Another source has confirmed that the restaurant has indeed closed, but D.ream (Doguş Restaurant Entertainment and Management)--which is behind Nahita--may be bringing a new concept to the space, according to the source.

Nahita first opened in September of 2018, offering a variety of Latin-Asian dishes that also had Turkish influences. The restaurant had taken over the space where Liquid Art House had been until it closed in November of 2017.

The address for the now-closed Nahita is 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Basile Fine Italian Kitchen Replaces Da Vinci Ristorante in Boston's Bay Village

A well-known Italian restaurant in Boston has very quietly been replaced by a new Italian spot.

Based on a tweet from @amydeveau and confirmed by Boston Magazine, Basile Fine Italian Kitchen is now open in the Da Vinci Ristorante space in the city's Bay Village neighborhood, with Namaha Capital being behind the new Columbus Avenue spot. Boston Magazine mentions that the place is "modernizing" the food and drink options and that renovations are being done to the space including updates to the bar and the patio. Even though a sign is up for the new restaurant, the official opening of Basile is slated to take place on Saturday, May 18.

Da Vinci Ristorante first opened its doors 12 years ago.

The address for Basile Fine Italian Kitchen (and the former Da Vinci Ristorante) is 162 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA, 02116. The Instagram page for the restaurant can be found at https://www.instagram.com/basileboston/

Erbaluce in Boston's Bay Village Is Closing

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a beloved Boston restaurant that features Italian food is closing at the end of the year.

Boston Magazine is reporting that Erbaluce in Bay Village is making plans to shut down after dinner service on New Year's Eve, as the building in which it resides is being slated for redevelopment with condos coming to the space. The article mentions that it had initially looked like the restaurant could possibly move back in after a few months as construction finished on the ground floor and moved onto the floors above, but with the plans now looking like it likely would not be able to reopen for at least a year, chef-owner Charles Draghi has decided against staying in the space while also saying that "we're looking for maybe another space [to operate] and all that. But the rents are just ridiculous, and there's no way we can afford half a million bucks for [a new] liquor license." Draghi refers to the fact that he and his partner Joan Johnson would need a new license because their restricted beer and wine license is owned by the city and is not transferable to a new space. The article says that Draghi might eventually look into opening a new restaurant in another community or possibly a cafe in the block where Erbaluce currently resides, but he says that "Right now, the way it looks is we're going to have to close, and figure it out from there."

Erbaluce first opened in 2008, taking over the space where another restaurant called Dedo used to be; the restaurant is known for its seasonal Northern Italian fare.

The address for Erbaluce is 69 Church Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for the dining spot can be found at http://www.erbaluce-boston.com/

[October 10 update: It appears that barring some change, Erbaluce is definitely closing at the end of the year, as a source tells us that an email sent out by the restaurant mentions that they "will be closing" and that their last night is indeed New Year's Eve.]

[January 21, 2019 update: A new Facebook post indicates that Erbaluce will be auctioning off a variety of equipment and fixtures on Wednesday, January 23, with items continuing to be sold for several days after.]

Mike and Patty's Will Not Be Coming to Waltham After All

This summer, we reported that a beloved Boston dining spot that has received both local and national recognition might be coming to "restaurant row" in Waltham. Now we have learned that this will not be happening after all.

According to an article in Boston Magazine, plans for Mike & Patty's in Boston's Bay Village to expand to Moody Street in Waltham have fallen through, though owners Mike Gurevich and Ania Zaroda now have new plans--to open a food stall at Somerville's upcoming Bow Market called North South, which will feature roast beef sandwiches and bar pizza. Back in July, we heard that the husband-and-wife team were hoping to open a new restaurant on Moody Street where a furniture store had been, with the plan being to open the place by the end of the year if all went well. It is not known what might happen to the space now that the dining spot will not be moving in; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Mike & Patty's first opened on Church Street in Bay Village in 2008, with the eatery receiving much press about its breakfast and lunch sandwiches over the years, including Boston Magazine giving it a Best of Boston in both 2012 and 2014, while Yahoo and Thrillist had it on their short list of Best Breakfast Sandwiches in America for 2015 as well. Its website can be found at http://www.mikeandpattys.com/'

Mike and Patty's in Boston's Bay Village Plans to Open New Location in Waltham

A beloved Boston breakfast place and sandwich shop that has received both local and national recognition since opening nine years ago is opening a new--and larger--location in the suburbs.

The Waltham News Tribune is reporting that Mike & Patty's on Church Street in Bay Village will be expanding to Moody Street in Waltham, with the new location apparently being more of a sit-down spot than the original, having 2,800 square feet of space and opening where a furniture store had been. The article says that if all goes as planned, the eatery could debut by the end of the year. (It appears that this will be a second location rather than a move, but as soon as we can confirm this, we will post an update here.)

The original location of Mike & Patty's, which first opened in 2008, has received a lot of positive press for its breakfast and lunch sandwiches, with the website for the place noting that it has been featured on TV Diner and Chronicle and included in Boston Magazine's Best of Boston in both 2012 and 2014--and Yahoo and Thrillist also had it on their "short list" of Best Breakfast Sandwiches in the United States for 2015.

The address for the upcoming location of Mike & Patty's in Waltham is 584 Moody Street, Waltham, MA, 02453. The website for the original location can be found at http://www.mikeandpattys.com/

[July 13 update: Boston Magazine states that it is not yet known if the new location of Mike & Patty's in Waltham will be a full-service restaurant and it is also too early to know if it will have an expanded menu. (Owners Mike and Ania Gurevich say that "It is still very early and we're still finishing some of the planning in terms of concept, menu, etc.")]

[September 7 update: A new article from Boston Magazine indicates that plans to open Mike & Patty's in Waltham have fallen through.]

Mike and Patty's in Boston's Bay Village Reopens

A Bay Village breakfast place and sandwich shop that closed a few months ago--and turned to Kickstarter to help fund a number of upgrades--has opened its doors once again.

Eater Boston is reporting that Mike & Patty's on Church Street is now open once again and it has both a renovated interior and a new menu, including such items as bourbon and rum-caramelized bananas with Nutella on buttered brioche bread. The eatery had shut down back in September due at least in part to the need for its space to adhere to building codes (including the installation of a fire suppression system). This isn't the first time that Mike & Patty's has closed, as the restaurant had a tough go of it in 2012 and ultimately ended up closing until an ownership change took place.

The address for the reopened Mike & Patty's in Bay Village is 12 Church Street, Boston, MA, 02116. Its website is at http://www.mikeandpattys.com/

Mike and Patty's in Boston's Bay Village Remains Closed, Turns to Kickstarter for Help

A breakfast place and sandwich shop in the Bay Village section of Boston that has had a series of closures and reopenings since starting out several years back is going through another stretch of being shuttered, and now it is asking for help.

According to its Facebook page, Mike & Patty's on Church Street has been closed since early September and is now seeking funding through Kickstarter to help pay for a number of upgrades to the space. The Kickstarter page for the breakfast and lunch spot mentions that "We found out we were going to be required to install a fire suppression system and adhere with the strict building codes of the city for restaurants. Those building codes were not designed to apply for 175 square foot eateries but we had no option but to shutdown, comply and make the necessary changes." A few of the other upgrades needed include new refrigerators, a new slicer, and an updated cooking area, with the owners saying that "All these changes in addition to carrying our basic expenses such as rent and utilities, getting the necessary permits, hiring an architect for drawings, a general contractor, and all the new electrical work necessary place the project at well over $35,000 and we cannot afford to foot the bill ourselves." According to the Kickstarter page, the project for Mike & Patty's will only be funded if at least $20,000 is pledged by November 20.

Mike & Patty's, which first opened in 2008, went through a rough stretch in 2012 where it ultimately ended up closing until the place went through an ownership change.

The address for this eatery in Bay Village is 12 Church Street, Boston, MA, 02116. Its website can be found at http://www.mikeandpattys.com/

Former Jae's Building in Boston's Theatre District/Bay Village Neighborhood to Be Demolished

The building in Boston's Theatre District/Bay Village area that used to be home to an Asian restaurant is going to be taken down.

The Boston Business Journal is reporting that the structure on Stuart Street where a location of Jae's used to be until closing nearly 10 years ago is being demolished over the coming weeks, with the demolition work apparently starting yesterday. The article says that Northwood Investors, which owns the adjacent Revere Hotel, is also the owner of the building being taken down, though it is not yet known what the plans will be for the space.

Other locations of Jae's have closed over the years, including now-shuttered outlets in Brookline and North Adams; a South End location called Jae's Cafe remains open on Columbus Avenue.

The address for the Theatre District/Bay Village building that used to house Jae's is 212 Stuart Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

New Restaurant and Boutique Hotel May Be Coming to Boston's Bay Village

It looks like the owner of a Southern-style restaurant and jazz bar in the South End of Boston may be teaming up with others to possibly build an upscale restaurant and boutique hotel in the nearby Bay Village section of the city.

According to The Boston Herald, a development team that includes Darryl Settles of Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen on Columbus Avenue is looking to construct a small hotel (19 rooms) and restaurant on Arlington Street where a vacant building currently sits. The article states that if all goes as planned, work could start on the site in the spring of 2012, with the restaurant and hotel possibly opening in 2013. Currently, no restaurant has yet committed to leasing the first-floor space (which will be about 2000 square feet), and the Herald mentions that the South End Buttery on Shawmut Avenue had been looking at the site as a possible second location of their bakery/cafe, but decided on another spot nearby.

For more information on this story, please go to the Boston Herald link below.

High hopes for hip hotel

[March 21, 2012 update: A newsletter from the Bay Village News mentions that plans for the hotel and restaurant have fallen through and that the property will soon be for sale again. If a new plan for a hotel and restaurant is introduced, we will post another update here. (Thanks to Adam's Hospitality & Tourism Industry Blog for bringing this to our attention.)]
