Illinois-Based Bread & Vine to Expand to Boston

A French bistro in the Midwest is in expansion mode, with one planning to open in the local area.

According to an article from the Peoria Journal Star, Bread & Vine is making plans to expand to Boston, with more locations also on the way to Illinois and Florida. The article mentions that new restaurants will debut in Geneva, IL, and Tampa, FL this fall, with a Boston outlet "soon to follow," though no address has been given as of yet. Once it does open, expect a fast-casual restaurant that offers comfort food with international influences, with a focus on French fare.

Bread & Vine's flagship location is in Galena, IL, serving such options as smoked salmon croissants, Croque Monsieur, Cubanos, quiche lorraine, ham and cheese croquettes, cheese and charcuterie boards, Roman-style pizza, mussels, gyros, tacos, and more.

Liberty & MAIN Is Opening at Legacy Place in Dedham

A new restaurant and bar is on its way to a development in the southwest suburbs, and the person behind it used to head up a high-end steakhouse chain.

According to a press release, Liberty & MAIN is opening at Legacy Place in Dedham, with the place being a New American bistro that will include an "interactive bar" along with an outdoor patio, and it will be run by Michael Feighery, who had been the CEO and President of Smith & Wollensky until leaving the group last year. In addition to offering American bistro food, Liberty & MAIN will also have a full bar and they are partnering with the Norwood-based Castle Island Brewery which will produce a signature beer for the place called Liberty Draft.

Les Zygomates in Boston's Leather District Has Closed for Good

An upscale French bistro in downtown Boston that was known in part for its wine list has shut down for good.

According to a source, Les Zygomates the Leather District is no longer in operation, with a check on the restaurant's website confirming this, saying that it has "permanently closed." Over the past few weeks we had heard from multiple sources (including Jacqueline Church) that the South Street spot may have indeed shuttered, but we were not able to confirm this until now.

Les Zygomates first opened in 1994, offering French fare along with a variety of wines, while also featuring live music including both jazz and blues.

Bar Boulud in Boston's Back Bay Is Closing for Good

A Back Bay restaurant with an award-winning chef behind it is shutting down permanently.

According to a press release, Bar Boulud within the Mandarin Oriental, Boston hotel on Boylston Street is closing for good as of June 17, with the note saying that "In keeping with many businesses at this time, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a negative impact on business levels, which has impacted operations." The release does mention that the hotel will "continue to work with the Mandarin Oriental at Bar Boulud London and look forward to sharing other projects together in the future," though no specific details have been given and it isn't known what might move into the Bar Boulud space at this point in time.

Bar Boulud first opened in the Back Bay in the summer of 2014, with the restaurant being a French-inspired casual restaurant; Chef Daniel Boulud, who is behind the place, has received three James Beard awards along with a Chef of the Year award in 2011 by The Culinary Institute of America, according to the restaurant's website.

Update: Brewer's Fork Team Plans to Open Dovetail in Navy Yard Bistro Space in Charlestown

Last fall, it was learned that a restaurant that resides in an historic space near the water was losing its home. Now we have learned that a nearby dining and drinking spot may be expanding into the space.

According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge is reporting in its print edition that the people behind Brewer's Fork on Moulton Street are looking to open a new concept at the space on 6th Street where Navy Yard Bistro currently resides. The article mentions that the new place is expected to be an American bistro and that the space would undergo extensive renovations, though this all hinges upon the permitting process as well as the ability to get a liquor license, as the license for Navy Yard Bistro isn't available. If they do get the green light, the new restaurant could be opening early next year.

Navy Yard Bistro, which first opened nearly 15 years ago, is expected to close on August 31; the dining and drinking spot is known in part for its New American fare and wine options along with its outdoor patio that sits along a tree-shaded cobblestone walkway out front. Brewer's Fork opened in early 2015 and is a popular spot for wood-fired pizza and craft beer. [Ed note: Navy Yard Bistro is now closed.]

Gray's Hall Is Opening Next Door to American Provisions in South Boston

It looks like an artisanal "farm-to-table" grocery store in South Boston could soon be joined by an adjacent restaurant that focuses on locally-sourced food.

Universal Hub is reporting that The Zoning Board of Appeal has given its approval for the people behind American Provisions to open a sit-down bistro next to the East Broadway market, with an earlier post from Caught in Southie saying that it will include seating for 28 along with a kitchen. Both articles say that owners Andy Faddous and Matthew Thayer hope to acquire a beer and wine license, while their attorney says that "It's something decidedly different for South Boston....It will be a non-noisy, quiet restaurant for people like us."

A second location of American Provisions opened earlier this year in Dorchester, moving into the Treadmark building in the Ashmont/Peabody Square area. (The website for both stores can be found at https://www.americanprovisions.com/)

The Little Crepe Cafe Is Opening in the Former Oxford Spa Space in Cambridge

It looks like a new cafe is on its way to a quiet part of Cambridge, moving into the space where another dining spot had been until closing a year and a half ago.

According to a license commission hearing agenda page within the city's website, The Little Crepe Cafe is planning to open on Oxford Street (a road parallel to Mass. Ave. basically between Harvard Square and Porter Square), with the exact address indicating that it would be taking over the old Oxford Spa space. The notice mentions that the place would be a counter service cafe/bistro and that it would have a "very simple kitchen" with no ventilation needed, including no heavy cooking, frying, or stoves. The proposed hours indicate that The Little Crepe Cafe would be open for breakfast, lunch, and an early dinner daily.

The Oxford Spa, which had been open for approximately 20 years until shutting down in the summer of 2017, offered breakfast and lunch items mainly to locals in the surrounding area as well as nearby students.

Michael Serpa Is Opening Grand Tour on Newbury Street in Boston's Back Bay

A familiar name within the local restaurant scene is going to be opening a Parisian-style bistro in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Michael Serpa, his wife and operations director Lina Velez, and his business partners will be opening Grand Tour on Newbury Street, with the address indicating that it will be moving into the space by Hereford Street where Smoothie King had been. The new restaurant, which will be around the corner from Serpa's Select Oyster Bar on Gloucester Street, will be a 50-seat two-level spot with a private dining room in the upper part, a bar with an open kitchen on the main floor below, and a patio along the street during the warmer months. The menu at Grand Tour may include such items as roast duck, rabbit in mustard sauce, and steak frites along with seasonal vegetables, charcuterie, and cheeses, while American and French wines will be available.

Before opening Select Oyster Bar in 2015, Michael Serpa worked at one of Boston's best-known restaurants--Neptune Oyster Bar in the North End.

Self-Portrait Is Opening in Former T.W. Food Space in Cambridge This Month

A couple of months ago, we reported that the owners of an upscale French-American restaurant in Cambridge were closing the place down and replacing it with a new dining spot. Now we have learned a bit more about the upcoming eatery.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Self-Portrait will be opening in the former T.W. Food space on Walden Street, with the new spot being "an exciting French Bistro that reflects Chef's cooking in Paris with terrific hands on cooking of breads, sauce work, butchery and more." Soon after the closing of T.W. Food, it was announced that the upcoming restaurant might focus on small plates; it is not known if this will still be the case, though the earlier announcement did say that the dishes would be inspired by the global travels of Tim Wiechmann, which apparently remains the case.

In addition to the now-closed T.W. Food and the upcoming Self-Portrait, owners Bronwyn and Tim Wiechmann also operate Bronwyn in Somerville's Union Square and used to run the now-closed Playska in Cambridge's Inman Square.

If all goes as planned, Self-Portrait will open sometime this month, according to its website.

Truck Drives into Square Cafe in Hingham, Injuring Three

A South Shore bistro is closed for the time being after a truck crashed into the restaurant Friday night, injuring three people.

WCVB 5 is reporting that a truck veered off of North Street in the center of Hingham at around 10:00 PM and smashed into the Square Cafe, injuring two people in the dining spot along with a passenger in the vehicle. The article says that the driver of the truck was arrested on several charges, though police say that he was not impaired at the time of the crash.

A Facebook post from the Square Cafe mentions that the two people in the restaurant who were hurt are now out of the hospital and that the place is "cleaning up" and hopes to reopen on Wednesday.

Tastings Wine Bar and Bistro in Foxborough Has Closed

A casual upscale restaurant southwest of Boston has decided to call it a day.

According to a post on its Facebook page, Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro at Patriot Place in Foxborough is now closed, with the note saying that "The combination of a weak economy, high and persistent unemployment, and high staff turnover has led us to this difficult decision." It is not known what the owners' plans are now that the dining spot is shuttered, nor is it known what might move into the space.

[July 2 update: The Boston Business Journal mentions that Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy yesterday, which indicates a likely liquidation of the business.]

Tastings first opened approximately six years ago, featuring New American and regional items such as herb-marinated olives, calamari, flatbread, a watermelon salad, cheese and charcuterie boards, steak frites, herb-crusted chicken, sauteed mussels, and macaroni and cheese, along with an extensive wine list.

Bar Boulud Is Opening in Boston's Back Bay

The person behind several award-winning restaurants--including a New York spot that has received numerous awards--is going to be opening a bistro and wine bar in the Back Bay of Boston.

A press release sent this morning indicates that Chef Daniel Boulud will open Bar Boulud within the Mandarin Oriental, Boston on Boylston Street, taking over the space where Asana has been. This will be the third location of the French-inspired casual eatery, with others being located in New York and London (the original Bar Boulud opened in NYC in 2008). Chef Boulud is also behind Daniel, a high-end restaurant in Manhattan which received a three-star ranking from Michelin.

Expect a fall opening for Bar Boulud.

[February 11 update: Boston Magazine gives a bit more information on the upcoming Back Bay location of Bar Boulud, including the fact that the menu will feature a "core" of dishes that are found at the New York and London locations, along with a charcuterie program similar to the one in the London restaurant. It appears that at least a bit more emphasis may be placed on seafood items as well, with seasonal items using local ingredients also stressed. Finally, the wine program will focus in part on the Rhone and Burgundy.]

Lola 41 Is Coming to Boston's Back Bay

The person behind a trio of restaurants on Nantucket is looking to bring a second location of one of them to Boston.

According to one of our readers, Marco Coelho of Pazzo, Lola Burger, and Lola 41 is planning to open a location of the latter in the city's Back Bay neighborhood. The reader mentions that Lola 41 is apparently coming to 50 Gloucester Street, which a page from Bizapedia seems to prove, and an article in Yesterday's Island, Today's Nantucket confirms that the restaurant is indeed coming to the Back Bay.

The address given in Bizapedia is also the same one that a proposed spot called Ambrosia on Gloucester was possibly coming to, but it is not yet known whether that project fell through or if it might open in another location (keep checking back for updates).

Lola 41 is an upscale eatery that features such items as sushi, slow-roasted pork belly, macaroni and cheese, pan-seared halibut, gnocchi, hanger steak, and the Lola burger, along with a variety of cocktails. Its website can be found at http://www.lola41.com/

The Lyceum in Salem Is Closing; 43 Church Replacing It

A Mediterranean bistro in Salem that has been in business for more than 20 years is shutting its doors, and a new restaurant and bar is moving into the space.

Based on information from a job post on Craigslist as well as a letter posted by North Shore Dish from the restaurant itself, The Lyceum on Church Street will be closing on July 31. The letter notes that the owner of the restaurant is planning to retire, though he will remain a partner in the new dining spot that is replacing it in August, which, according to Craigslist, will be a steakhouse and wine bar.

[August 18 update: The new restaurant, which is now open, is called 43 Church. The menu from its Facebook page shows such items as steak, chops, and classic American dishes including boiled lobster, pan-seared haddock, and free-range chicken.]

The Lyceum first opened in 1989 in an old lecture hall that historic figures such as Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, and Alexander Graham Bell once visited. The restaurant's menu has included a variety of pasta, seafood, beef, and chicken dishes as well as a raw bar.

3 Little Figs Is Moving into the Former Aroma Cafe Space in Somerville

A cafe and bistro in Somerville has closed its doors, and a Greek and Mediterranean baking company that is based in Jamaica Plain will be opening a retail outlet in the spot.

According to The Feast and a poster on Chowhound, 3 Little Figs is going to open on Highland Avenue, moving into the space where Aroma Cafe used to be until recently shutting down. The Feast mentions that the 3 Little Figs shop, which is planning to open in early September, will have 18 seats and a little patio outside. Items such as spinach pie, baklava, cinnamon doughnut muffins, gourmet coffee and espresso, and, eventually, salads and sandwiches, will be offered at the new spot.

Presently, 3 Little Figs sells their baked goods at City Feed and Supply in Jamaica Plain (two locations), Mystic Coffee Roaster in Medford, and Voltage Coffee and Art in Cambridge.

Christina's Is Opening in Newton Highlands

A new restaurant is coming to Newton Highlands, and it will be moving into the space where a location of a popular doughnut chain used to be.

According to Newton Villages, Christina's is planning to open on Walnut Street, taking over the former Dunkin' Donuts space (the Newton Highlands location of Dunkin' Donuts closed last December). The article mentions that Christina's will be a cafe-style bistro with Greek-influenced fare, and it will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The owners of the new spot had been hoping to open around Memorial Day, according to Newton Villages; as soon as we hear about a definite opening date, we will post an update here.

Back Bay Social Club Opening on Boylston Street

A new restaurant is getting ready to open in the Back Bay of Boston, and it looks like it will be a casual American bistro serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.

According to both the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe, the Back Bay Social Club will be opening in the old Vinny T's spot on Boylston Street, which is between Fairfield and Gloucester Streets and across from the Prudential Center and the Hynes Convention Center. The Herald mentions that the restaurant will have a capacity of 200 and will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A job posting on the Craigslist states that the Back Bay Social club will be open seven days a week.

Both the Herald and Globe articles (which are from earlier this spring) state that the Back Bay Social Club was to have opened in late May. There currently does not seem to be a specific opening date for the restaurant, but the post on Craigslist indicates that the place is hiring right now, so the Back Bay Social Club may indeed be opening soon (we will post an update as soon as we find more information).

The Lyons Group, which is behind the Summer Shack, La Verdad, House of Blues, Kings, and a number of other Boston-area spots, is also behind the opening of the Back Bay Social Club.

[August 2 update: The Back Bay Social Club has opened. A poster on our Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page indicated that it opens today, but based on some Yelp reviews, it apparently opened over the weekend.]

Chez Jacky Opening in Brighton This Spring

A casual French bistro will be opening in Brighton this spring, replacing a Mexican restaurant that has been in its present spot for about four years. According to the Boston Globe, Chez Jacky is going to open on Commonwealth Avenue, possibly in April, moving into the space where Zocalo has been (there is another Zocalo on Broadway in Arlington). The people opening Chez Jacky are also behind Petit Robert Bistro, which has locations in the South End of Boston, Kenmore Square, and Needham.

The Globe mentions that Chez Jacky will be a reasonably-priced family-style dining spot with a number of craft beers offered. Outdoor dining will be an option once the warm weather arrives, according to the article. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner.

Beacon Grille Opening in Woburn in January

A new casual high-end restaurant and bar will soon be opening in Woburn. According to the restaurant's website and Facebook page, the Beacon Grille is looking to open at the TradeCenter complex just north of Route 128 in January of 2010. The restaurant will have a capacity of about 250, and will feature American bistro-style fare for both lunch and dinner (dinner only on Saturdays, and apparently closed on Sundays). A 60-seat bar and lounge will also be within the dining spot. [January 26 update: The Beacon Grille is now officially open.]

The lunch and dinner menus at the Beacon Grille will include such dishes as fish chowder, roast beef au jus, a grilled chicken panini, a 20-ounce rib eye, roasted bourbon-glazed pork chops, chicken pot pie, grilled salmon, and boiled Maine lobster. The dinner menu will also feature small plates and pizzatas. Entree prices range upward to the mid-30s, with most items being in the teens and twenties.

Azure In the Back Bay Has Become City Table

An upscale hotel restaurant in the Back Bay of Boston has morphed into a new, more casual eatery. Azure, a New American restaurant located within the Lenox Hotel on the corner of Exeter Street and Boylston Street, became City Table last month.

City Table features contemporary versions of classic American fare, offering such items as lobster soup, white cheddar fondue, pappardelle pasta with braised short ribs, fire-roasted chicken, and a variety of bistro-style sandwiches, including sliders, Cubanos, and lobster rolls. Most entrees cost between $20 and $30, while most sandwiches are in the vicinity of $10.
