99 Restaurant in Charlestown May Close, Be Replaced by Apartments

A longtime location of a local group of restaurants could become the site of residential development.

According to an article from Universal Hub, the 99 Restaurant in Charlestown may be closing at some point, as the Boston Planning Department board has approved of plans to build 240 apartments at the Austin Street site. The article mentions that the six-story structure could be built by 2028, though it is not yet known when the restaurant might have to close.

The Charlestown location of the 99 Restaurant was the site of a notorious shooting back in 1995 that left four people dead and which UH says was "one of the last major spasms of mob violence in Boston."

The address for the 99 Restaurant in Charlestown is 31 Austin Street, Charlestown, MA, 02129. The website for the chain (which is headquartered in Woburn) is at https://www.99restaurants.com/

Update: Pier 6 in Charlestown, ReelHouse in East Boston and Quincy Reopen After Going into Hibernation November 1

[Ed note: This article was updated on May 1 to reflect the fact that all three places are now open once again.]

It looks like three more Boston-area restaurants are following the increasing trend of dining spots going into hibernation as the temperatures start to drop.

According to multiple sources, Pier 6 in Charlestown and ReelHouse in East Boston and Quincy's Marina Bay are soon shutting down for the winter, with the websites for all three restaurants saying that they will be going on "Winter Break" on November 1. No reopening dates for any of the restaurants have been given as of yet, nor is it known whether its other affiliated dining spot--Mija in Faneuil Hall--might be going into hibernation as well; as of now, the website for that restaurant does not show that it plans to close for the winter, but if we hear otherwise, we will post an update here. (All four restaurants are part of the Navy Yard Hospitality Group.)

At least four other local restaurants have gone into hibernation over the past few weeks, including Commonwealth in Cambridge's Kendall Square, The Emory in Beacon Hill, The Kenmore in Kenmore Square, and Grand Tour in the Back Bay, with the common thread appearing to be the colder weather affecting such things as outdoor dining and foot traffic around restaurants as the pandemic continues.

The website for Navy Yard Hospitality Group (which includes links to its restaurants) can be found at https://www.navyyardhospitality.com/properties
