A popular hot dog cart north of Boston has been joined by a second location that should be popular with sun worshipers.
According to its Facebook page, Fred's Franks in Wakefield is now selling its hot dogs and other food items on a pontoon boat that is set up at Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, with one post stating that it is located to the left of the sandbar where other boats are tied off. The Facebook page for Fred's also says that the Gloucester location is only open on weekends and it is assumed that this will be a summer-only location, though an exact closing date does not seem to have been given as of yet. Based on the photos shown and the menu at the Wakefield location, the pontoon boat sells hot dogs, Shnurbles (which includes a hot dog, chourico, mayo, cabbage, and hot sauce), Italian sausages, burgers, drinks, and desserts.
The original Fred's Franks can be found at the northern edge of Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield near where Route 129 and Route 128 intersect. Its website is at http://fredsfranks.com/

Sami's in Boston's Longwood Medical Area Has Closed Again

A landmark food trailer that closed for a couple of years earlier in the decade has closed once again.
According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Sami's in Boston's Longwood medical area has closed, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this, saying "It pains me to say this which is why it's taken me so long to post... We are closed, indefinitely. Mom (Amy) and I are heartbroken about this. We feel terrible that we weren't able to give you all any notice either. I don't even know what to say here... We love you all like family and will miss you so much. Jou-jou" A note within the comments section of the post says that "there's a teeny bit of chance" of it being able to reopen, but it "requires lots of fundraising and orchestrating."
In 2012, the Sami's food cart had to close and was facing the possibility of losing its home because it apparently needed to abide by the same codes as brick-and-mortar structures since it did not have wheels. It returned, however, in 2014 and has been open ever since.
Sami's first opened in the Longwood area in 1979, featuring such items as falafel, hummus, lamb gyros, kebab wraps, and chicken shawarma.

Smokey's Almost Famous Hot Dogs in Raynham Has Returned
A seasonal hot dog and sausage stand that closed down last fall after a quarter century in business is back with what appears to be a new owner.
A comment posted in an earlier article here mentions that Smokey's Almost Famous Hot Dogs in Raynham "is back for the 26th season. We have the same menu with some new items on the way!" A check on its Facebook page shows an earlier post saying that "someone will be taking over Smokeys...and yes I will train him which means I will be back for a short time, but knowing myself it will be tough to stay away." Last November we reported that the owner of Smokey's was shutting down the cart and considering retiring from the business, though he was also looking to have a new owner possibly taking it over.

Smokey's Almost Famous Hot Dog/Sausage Stand in Raynham Has Closed

According to its Facebook page, Smokey's Almost Famous in Raynham shut down on Saturday, with the owner thanking his customers and saying "I don't know the status of my trailer...will someone buy it return as a new Smokey...unknown right now...But remember this there is only one Smokey ---ME Thanks everyone bye." A more recent post hints that the owner will actually be renewing the permit for the place, but he states that it "doesn't mean I'll return...Later this month and the winter will tell me more." Based on earlier posts, it appears that the reason for the trailer shutting down is because the owner has been hoping to retire.

Campus Trolley by Boston University Has Closed
A beloved food stall that was a popular spot for college students over the past few decades has called it a day.
The Boston Globe is reporting that Campus Trolley by the Boston University campus has closed, as owners of the Commonwealth Avenue food cart have decided to shut it down because of new city regulations that would force them to either install in-ground plumbing or add wheels to make the cart mobile, with the latter apparently not being feasible because of its age.
Campus Trolley, which first opened in 1988, was known for its Lebanese fare, including such items as hummus, grape leaves, falafel, chicken kabobs, and kafta. The place was located near the Boston University East T stop.

Ten New Food Options Coming to Boston's Rose Kennedy Greenway for the 2016 Season
The 2016 food vendor lineup for the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston has been announced, and 10 vendors will be setting up shop there for the first time.
According to a post from BostInno, the new names for this season include Chik Chak (Middle Eastern), Cupcake City, Gogi on the Block (Korean) Jamaica Me Hungry, Munch Mobile (American bistro fare), Quebrada (baked goods), Roving Lunch Box (hand pies) Sheherezad (Middle Eastern) Walden Meat Co., and Walloon's Fried Chicken. The article also says that a record 34 food vendors will be on the Greenway this season, with at least 20 being set up at any given time.
The 2016 season is slated to begin on April 1.

In 2012, the food cart had to close and was facing the possibility of losing its home because it apparently needed to abide by the same codes as brick-and-mortar structures since it did not have wheels. Because of this, Sami's had to look at installing plumbing or else it would no longer be able to operate. (There is no word on the outcome of this.)

Fred's Franks in Wakefield May Have to Move
It looks like a hot dog stand near the northern edge of Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield may have to move to another spot, though it remains open in its current location for the time being.
The Wakefield Patch is reporting that Carl Galasso of Fred's Franks was paid a visit by someone who claimed to be a representative of a state agency. The man told the owner of the hot dog stand that he would not be able to stay at his present location because it resides on a state-owned highway right of way, and that Galasso would face daily fines if he stayed at the site, which is just south of the intersection of Route 128 and 129. According to the article, Galasso did not know which state agency the man represented, and that he will continue to operate Fred's Franks at its current spot until he receives a formal letter about the issue.
If the owner of Fred's does have to move, the Patch says that one option may be to move a short distance over to town land. Galasso is hesitant to move closer to the lake, however, stating that "I don't want to be an eyesore."
Fred's Franks offers all-beef natural casing hot dogs as well as kielbasa, chorizo, and linguica. The food stand has been featured on our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) as an under-the-radar spot that is worth checking out. A link to the review can be found below:

2012 Food Vendor Lineup for the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston
The 2012 food vendor lineup for Boston's Rose Kennedy Greenway has just been announced, and it will include a mix of new and returning trucks, trailers, kiosks, and carts. Based on an article from Grub Street Boston, some of the new foods offered this year on the Greenway will be Greek items, grilled cheese, and tacos. Speed's Hot Dogs Is Looking to Expand
After a couple of stops and starts, it looks like a landmark hot dog wagon in the Newmarket Square section of Boston is going to try to expand once again.
According to their Facebook page, Boston Speed's Famous Hot Dog Wagon is "looking for a investor for a new truck or two," though no further details have been given. In late 2010, it was reported that Speed's had been planning to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, and last June it appeared that the hot dog place was going to open a new cart across the street from Gillette Stadium (which is home to the New England Patriots and the New England Revolution) in Foxboro, but neither place opened. It could be possible that the Foxboro plans may be back on track once again since the owner of Speed's is looking for at least one new truck, but that is only speculation at this point, so keep checking back for updates.
[March 26 update: The Boston Business Journal reports that the owner of Boston Speed Dog is indeed looking to get a second truck, and he is also planning to take his existing truck to various sites around Boston as part of the food truck pilot program. The article mentions that starting April 1, the hot dog wagon will be found at the following sites: Monday--Copley Square (Boston Public Library), Tuesday--Chinatown (across from RMV), Wednesday--City Hall Plaza, Thursday--Financial District (Milk Street), and Friday--Fenway (Hemenway Street). Hours will be 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM except for Wednesday, when it will be at City Hall Plaza from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.]

Chicken and Rice Guys Food Truck Coming to Boston
A new food truck is on its way to Boston, and it will be focusing on a Middle Eastern dish that is hugely popular in New York City.
According to their Twitter and Facebook pages, the Chicken & Rice Guys food truck will be launching sometime this spring, featuring chicken and rice with white sauce or spicy red sauce, lettuce, and pita bread. Two sizes will be offered--an entree size and a smaller snack size--and lamb and veggie options will be available as well. The Chicken & Rice Guys truck will apparently be open only on weekends, with stations being at the Morse Auditorium at Boston University and the Boston Public Library in the Back Bay.

Grillo's Pickles to Open a Pickle Shop in the Boston Area
A local company that runs a pickle cart on Boston Common and sells pickles at various markets and stores around the region is going to be opening a brick-and-mortar pickle shop in the Boston area early next year.
According to Adam's Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog, Grillo's Pickles is planning to open a shop somewhere in the city, with a possible opening between January and March of 2012. The article mentions that if the pickle shop opens in Boston, it will be the first one of its kind to open in the city.
[December 11 update: More details on this story--according to the Boston Magazine Chowder blog, Grillo's Pickles is planning to open a pop-up pickle shop off of Prospect Street near Cambridge's Inman Square. The article mentions that while it will be a three-month venture, the owner may decide to create a permanent location of the pickle shop depending on its success. Grillo's Pickles first opened its pickle cart on Boston Common in 2009, eventually expanding into the retail business, with its pickles now being sold at markets in shops in the Boston area, elsewhere in New England, and New York. Their pickles can be found at such places as City Feed and Supply, Dave's Fresh Pasta, The Meat House, Pemberton Farms, Whole Foods, and many more spots.

Doc Popcorn Is Opening at Boston's South Station
A small chain of popcorn carts and kiosks is getting ready to open its second New England location, with this one being at Boston's South Station.
According to their website, Doc Popcorn is going to be opening within the South Station concourse on Atlantic Avenue at the edge of the Financial District. A variety of all-natural flavors will be available at the kiosk, including classic kettle popcorn, cheddar cheese, jalapeno pepper, and sweet butter. Patrons will be able to try free samples at Doc Popcorn, and gift tins can be purchased as well. The folks behind the popcorn kiosk are also going to have a mobile popcorn cart that can be used for events or parties.
Currently, Doc Popcorn has a cart in Mystic, CT, with nearly 30 other carts and kiosks scattered across the country (and more to come). In addition to their Boston location, they are also going to be opening a kiosk in New York City.
The Doc Popcorn chain was founded in Colorado in 2003.
A poster on Chowhound mentions that Doc Popcorn may be having a soft opening as early as tonight.

Renula's Greek Kitchen Food Cart Opens in Needham
A new mobile food cart has just opened in the Boston area, and this one features Greek cuisine.
According to their Facebook and Twitter pages, Renula's Greek Kitchen has set up a mobile kitchen on A Street (off of 2nd Avenue) in Needham, which is just southeast of where Highland Avenue intersects Route 128. It appears that Renula's is open for lunch only, as one of their Twitter posts stated that they were open until 3:00 a few days ago and a Chowhound poster mentioned that it was a lunch-only food cart (a Facebook poster also said that the cart is open from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM or whenever the food runs out). Based on the restaurant's website as well as their Twitter and Facebook pages, foods available at Renula's include Greek salads, stuffed grape leaves, souvlaki, and beef, lamb, and chicken gyros.
To find the Renula's Greek Kitchen Food Cart from Route 128, take Highland Avenue toward Newton, then take the second right (2nd Avenue) and then a right on A Street. The cart is across from from Gold's Gym/WOW.

Speed's Hot Dogs to Open Across from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro
It appears that an award-winning hot dog wagon in Boston that has been in business for more than 30 years is going to be opening a second cart, and football lovers will probably want to take note of this one.
A note on their Twitter page indicates that Boston Speed's Famous Hot Dog Wagon in Newmarket Square is planning to open another cart across from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. The new wagon could be open by July, according to the note posted on Twitter.
Last December, we had reported that a bricks-and-mortar location of Speed's had also been in the works, with the place planning to open on Peterborough Street near Fenway Park in Boston at about this time, but we have not heard any updates on that spot of late.

2011 Food Vendor Lineup for Boston's Rose Kennedy Greenway
Last year, a pilot program was set up for 6 food vendors to appear along the Rose Kennedy Greenway in downtown Boston. It appears that vendors will be back on the Greenway for 2011, with twice as many food trucks, trailers, kiosks, and carts setting up this year.
According to The Boston Globe, a total of 12 food vendors will be coming to the Rose Kennedy Greenway this year, including 5 from last year and 7 new ones. The Globe mentions that the following food trucks, trailers, kiosks, and carts will be setting up along the Greenway (from south to north):
BBQSmith (new this year), in Chinatown Park
Clover Food Lab, in Dewey Square Park
DosaMobile (new), in Dewey Square Park
Lefty’s Silver Cart (new), in Dewey Square Park

Speed's Hot Dogs to Open in Boston's Fenway Neighborhood
It looks like a landmark hot dog wagon in Boston is preparing to open a bricks-and-mortar restaurant in the Fenway neighborhood of the city.
According to the Serious Eats site, Boston Speed's Famous Hot Dog Wagon in the Newmarket Square section of Boston is planning on opening on Peterborough Street in the "restaurant row" block that burned to the ground in January of 2009. The article on the website mentions that the new spot may have an expanded menu that could include different types of sausages as well as alcohol, though food and drink options have apparently not been confirmed as of yet.
If all goes as planned, the new Speed's in the Fenway neighborhood could be open sometime in the late winter or early spring of 2011. Also, the Serious Eats site states that the Speed's cart will indeed be staying open in Newmarket Square. [February 14, 2011 update: Based on information from Theo Associates and Universal Hub, the new Speed's on Peterborough Street might be opening in June of 2011, along with all the other restaurants within the block that plan to open/reopen.]
Other restaurants that expect to open in the block that was hit by last year's fire include El Pelon Taqueria, Rod Dee Thai Cuisine, and Thornton's Fenway Grill.

Jack and the Bean Bowl Opens Today
A food cart called Jack and the Bean Bowl is opens for business in the Back Bay today. Jack and the Bean Bowl, which features bean and rice vegetarian bowls, will be setting up its cart in the heart of Copley Square on Boylston Street. In addition to black beans and brown rice, the bowls at this food cart will include a mix of avocado, cheese, cilantro, sour cream, and salsa, all topped with one of two sauce options.
