A popular seafood restaurant on the North Shore that is known in part for its water views and outdoor dining is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Captain Carlo's in Gloucester is closing permanently, with a Facebook post from the dining spot saying the following:

From the early days as a fish market, to picnic tables and fried clams, years of crazy late nights and live music to the pandemic it's been a wild ride! We have staff and customers that have become family over the 30 plus years and so many amazing memories. All good things though must come to an end and it's the end of the road for Captain Carlos. It's time for Rosemarie to enjoy being a full time Grandma. Thank you for always supporting us!

The post mentions that its last day in business will be Saturday. September 4.

Captain Carlo's changed from being a full-service restaurant to an "eat in the rough" spot this summer, being set up for counter service and takeout while also keeping its deck open for diners. Cape Ann Brewing Company in Gloucester Has Permanently Closed

A North Shore brewery has decided to call it a day.

According to a source, Cape Ann Brewing Company in Gloucester is no longer in operation, with a Facebook post from Boston's Wicked North Shore confirming this, while a Facebook post from the Rogers Street brewery says the following:

During the summer of 2002, a casual conversation spawned the, perhaps ill-thought, idea of what would become the Cape Ann Brewing Company. Since that day, we strove to create a brand and a place that would represent "the courage and spirit of the North Atlantic Fishing Fleet." We are proud of what we've created over the past 18 years. During this time we've weathered many storms, at times enjoyed smooth seas, and have always been thankful for the [strong] headwinds that have guided our voyage. Unfortunately, the current climate has proven to be our last sail.

Cape Ann Brewing Company was known in part for its brewpub which had harborside seating on an outdoor deck, while its menu featured BBQ dishes, seafood, and pub grub.

The address for Cape Ann Brewing Company was 11 Rogers Street, Gloucester, MA, 01930.

Update: Prezza, Tonno (Both Locations), Blue Ox All Going into Hibernation As of December 14; Will Reopen in February

Four well-known restaurants that are all under the same ownership are the latest to announce their plans to shut down for the time being.

According to a source, Prezza in Boston's North End, Tonno in Gloucester and Wakefield, and the Blue Ox in Lynn are all planning to shutter as of Monday, December 14, with a Facebook post from Prezza saying that the decision was made due to "the current rise in Covid cases, new government restrictions, and overall consumer confidence in dining out." The post mentions that the hibernation will continue until the end of the year and they will make a decision at some point as to when in 2021 they think it would be best to reopen.

Anthony Caturano is behind all four restaurants, with Prezza being an Italian dining spot, both Tonno restaurants focusing on Italian seafood dishes, and the Blue Ox offering mostly New American fare.

[February 17, 2021 update: According to multiple social media posts, Prezza, Tonno, and the Blue Ox are all open once again.]

Halibut Point Restaurant & Pub in Gloucester Has Closed Permanently

A decades-old Cape Ann tavern has shut its doors for good, though it appears that its closing was not a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a source (Cynthia Lawry), Halibut Point Restaurant & Pub in Gloucester is shuttered permanently, with an article from the Gloucester Daily Times saying that owner Dennis Flavin made the decision approximately three weeks ago, while also saying that the coronavirus outbreak "has absolutely nothing to do with it....It's just time. I knew it was coming. I just had a gut feeling that we wouldn't open again. So this is it." Flavin, who also has a studio with his wife Peggy where he does abstract paintings, put the Main Street building, business, and liquor license on the market last weekend, and it is too early to know what might go into the space at this point in time.

Halibut Point Restaurant & Pub, which has been in business since 1982, resides on the site of a tavern that dated back to 1900.

The address for the now-closed Halibut Point Restaurant & Pub is 289 Main Street, Gloucester, MA, 01930.

A seasonal restaurant on the North Shore that was known in part for its scenic water views has closed for good, though the COVID-19 pandemic is apparently not the cause.

According to a source (Cynthia Lawry), The Market Restaurant in the Annisquam neighborhood of Gloucester is permanently shuttered, with a note on its website saying that "Although this coincides with the closing of many restaurants due to the ongoing pandemic, this was a decision we made some time ago. A popular hot dog cart north of Boston has been joined by a second location that should be popular with sun worshipers.

According to its Facebook page, Fred's Franks in Wakefield is now selling its hot dogs and other food items on a pontoon boat that is set up at Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, with one post stating that it is located to the left of the sandbar where other boats are tied off. Tonno Is Opening in Wakefield

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like an Italian seafood restaurant on Cape Ann is expanding to a second space that is much closer to Boston.

According to an article from the Wakefield Daily Item, Tonno is planning to open in Wakefield, moving into a space at Wakefield Station on North Avenue between West Water Street and Armory Street. The post says that the new dining spot will have seating for as many as 215 including outdoor seating on a seasonal patio, and that based on a press release that just came out, it looks like it will be open for dinner daily, with a Sunday brunch possibly being offered as well, and that beer, wine, and cocktails will be offered along with a variety of Italian dishes.

Anthony Caturano of Prezza in Boston's North End opened the original location of Tonno on Main Street in Gloucester in June of 2016; the menu includes such items as oysters, cherrystones, crab cakes, spaghetti fra diavolo, fish stew, grilled swordfish, grilled pork chop, and veal milanese. The website for Tonno can be found at https://www.tonnorestaurant.com/

Thanks to The Passionate Foodie for initially bringing this to our attention.

Seaport Grille Planning to Open at Boston Landing in Brighton

A few years ago, we reported that a new development at the site of the New Balance world headquarters in Brighton might become home to some dining spots. Now we have learned that a Gloucester-based hospitality company will be opening a second location of its restaurant there.

According to a job post within the bostonchefs.com site, Beauport Hospitality Group is planning to open a location of Seaport Grille within the Boston Landing complex on Guest Street, with the place having seating for 274 in its restaurant and bar along with some outdoor seating during the warmer months. The post says that the upcoming eatery will be an upscale casual spot that will be open for lunch and dinner daily, and that it will offer "contemporary New England cuisine" in a "beautifully designed" space. The original location of Seaport Grille can be found at 6 Rowe Square overlooking Cruiseport Gloucester, which is also run by Beauport Hospitality Group. Alchemy in Gloucester Has Closed...Again

An upscale restaurant on the North Shore has shut its doors for the second time, but this time it appears to be a permanent closure.

According to a post on its Facebook page, Alchemy in Gloucester shut down over the weekend, with the Duncan Street dining spot saying the following:

We're closing....For real this time. The way people dine is evolving, and while we have lots of wonderful, loyal guests, Alchemy just isn't a place most people can eat at multiple times a week, and that's not our goal. We want a space where families can dine out regularly with great food, drinks and a fun, casual vibe. So, we're going to make that. We don't know exactly how it will look or what the food will be, but we're going to figure it out; and when we do, we'll let you know.

Another note from the Facebook page says that gift cards for Alchemy will be honored at all other Serenitee Restaurant Group dining spots, including Opus in Salem, The Waterfield Kitchen in Winchester, The Spot in Georgetown, Maggie's Farm in Middleton, 15 Walnut in Hamilton, Hale St Tavern in Beverly Farms, Cala's in Manchester by the Sea, and Latitude 43 and Minglewood Tavern in Gloucester, and customers who have Groupons for the restaurant will be able to apply for a refund.

An earlier post from Good Morning Gloucester stated that Alchemy closed for the first time in March of 2014 only to reopen that fall with a new menu, according to another article,

The address for the now-closed Alchemy was 3 Duncan Street, Gloucester, MA, 01930.

Anthony Caturano of Prezza in Boston's North End Is Opening Tonno in Gloucester

One of the most familiar figures within the Boston restaurant scene is opening a second dining spot, and this one will be north of the city.

Eater Boston is reporting that Anthony Caturano, who is the chef/owner of Prezza in the North End, is planning to open Tonno in Gloucester, taking over the space on Main Street where the Blackburn Tavern had been. The article says that the 99-seat dining spot will be a "coastal Italian seafood concept" with the menu including seafood caught off the New England coast. Expect to see such items as octopus salad, local oysters, roasted cod oreganata, cioppino, and more, along with a huge wine list with most being from Italy and "classic Italian cocktails." If all goes as planned, Tonno could be opening sometime in the spring of 2016.

[June 7, 2016 update: According to a press release, Tonno opens on June 17.]

Caturano's 15-year-old Prezza is an upscale Italian restaurant on Fleet Street in the North End that features dishes from Italy's Abruzzi region.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries Closes Its Gloucester Location

A chain of burger places that has been rapidly expanding through Eastern Massachusetts has closed one of its locations in the region.

The Gloucester Times is reporting that Five Guys Burgers and Fries has closed its shop in Gloucester, with a possible reason for its closing being high rents, shaky economic conditions, or a mixture of both. (The developer of Gloucester Crossing said that "we made rent concessions, but the economic slowdown was more protracted than anyone expected," while someone from Cape Ann Liquors--which is also in the plaza--said he had heard that the rent was too high.)

Even with the Gloucester outlet of Five Guys shuttering, the chain continues to expand through the area, with two locations coming to Boston and one more coming to Braintree. Five Guys currently has about 30 locations in Massachusetts.

The address for this now-closed burger place in Gloucester was: Five Guys Burgers and Fries,  721 Gloucester Crossing Road, Gloucester, MA, 01930. The website for the chain can be found at http://www.fiveguys.com/
