Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain Is Closing; New Concept Coming to the Space

A longtime neighborhood restaurant in Jamaica Plain that has been known for its locally-sourced seasonal New American fare is shutting down, though the owner of the place will apparently be opening a new concept there.

According to several sources, including posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Ten Tables on Centre Street is closing, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

After a quarter century of dinners, anniversary celebrations, first dates, and weeknight rituals, it's time to turn the page. Our last service as Ten Tables will be on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2025....I'm closing this chapter with immense gratitude—for every guest who squeezed into one of our tiny table tops, every farmer who showed up at the back door, and every member of our team who poured their heart into this restaurant. In this same beloved space, I’ll be reimagining what comes next: a new concept that honors the intentional, crafted, and change-making purpose that is my passion....Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for 25 unforgettable years at Ten Tables.... — Krista Kranyak (KK), Owner

In addition to the JP location, there had once been a location of Ten Tables in Cambridge as well that was open from 2009 through the end of 2015.

Althea Is Opening in the Former Dial Space in Cambridge's Central Square

Last month it was reported that a restaurant on the ground floor of a boutique hotel in Cambridge had shut down, and now we have learned that a new dining spot from the husband-and-wife team behind a nearby Italian restaurant will be moving into the space.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Althea is going to be opening in Central Square, taking over the ground-floor space space within 907 Main that had been home to The Dial. The article mentions that Greg Reeves and Shauna Reyburn of Vialé on Mass. Ave. will be running the place, which will focus on creative American fare using locally sourced and "thoughtfully sourced" ingredients. If all goes as planned, Althea will open in April, and it will include a raw bar, patio, and live music.

Nomai in Hingham Has Closed

A South Shore restaurant that featured New American fare with Asian influences has shut down.

According to a source, Nomai in Hingham is no longer in operation, with a Boston Globe article confirming that the dining spot--which is located at the Derby Street Shops--is closed. Nomai first opened in the early part of 2022, with Brian Moy (Ruckus and Shōjō in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood) being behind it; the Globe mentions that Moy will be reopening China Pearl in Chinatown sometime this winter.

Cloud & Spirits in Cambridge Ends Dinner and Bar Service; Will Become an Event Space

A Cambridge dining and drinking spot that opened a couple of years ago is turning into a place for events only.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Cloud & Spirits on Main Street between Kendall and Central squares has shut down its restaurant, with a Facebook post from the spot saying the following:

After an exciting and ambitious two-year adventure, we regret to inform you that the dinner and bar service at Cloud & Spirits will be discontinuing....While we are sad to bid farewell to operations as we have known it over the past 2 years, we are excited to introduce a new chapter in our story. Moving forward we will be shifting our focus to providing our beautiful space as an event venue for special occasions and parties....We hope that you will celebrate your special occasion with us!

Cloud & Spirits first opened in June of 2021, taking over the space where Cuchi Cuchi had been; the restaurant offered mostly New American fare with Korean influences while also being known in part for its cocktails.

Nosh & Grog in Medfield Is Moving to Canton

An upscale restaurant in the southwest suburbs of Boston is moving to a new, larger space a bit closer to Boston.

According to multiple sources along with a Facebook post from the place, Nosh & Grog in Medfield is planning to move to Canton, taking over the former Bertucci's space on Washington Street. The post from the restaurant gets into more detail, saying the following:

We have outgrown our space and are moving to an absolutely beautiful, and much larger, new location in Canton....We hope to close shop here in Medfield in about a month, and plan to open in our beautiful new space a few weeks later. We will update you on exact dates as we finalize the details. For now, thank you for making us so successful. We look forward to sharing our new restaurant with you. Until then join us here in Medfield center one more time before we move.

Nosh & Grog first opened on North Street in Medfield in 2016, replacing Zebra's Bistro and Wine Bar; it is known in part for its New American fare and cocktails.

The Emory in Boston's Beacon Hill Has Closed

A Beacon Hill restaurant has decided to say farewell.

According to a source, The Emory on Beacon Street is no longer in business, with an Instagram post from the place saying that "The realities of the new economy in Beacon Hill have proven [too] much for this little restaurant. We will miss all of you and it has been a pleasure to serve all who came." The restaurant, which first opened in the former Scollay Square space in the summer of 2019, offered mostly New American fare while also serving beer, wine, and cocktails.

Liberty & MAIN Is Opening at Legacy Place in Dedham

A new restaurant and bar is on its way to a development in the southwest suburbs, and the person behind it used to head up a high-end steakhouse chain.

According to a press release, Liberty & MAIN is opening at Legacy Place in Dedham, with the place being a New American bistro that will include an "interactive bar" along with an outdoor patio, and it will be run by Michael Feighery, who had been the CEO and President of Smith & Wollensky until leaving the group last year. In addition to offering American bistro food, Liberty & MAIN will also have a full bar and they are partnering with the Norwood-based Castle Island Brewery which will produce a signature beer for the place called Liberty Draft.

Update: State Street Provisions on the Boston Waterfront Reopens After Being Closed for the Winter

[Ed note: This article was updated on March 30, 2021 to reflect the fact that the restaurant is now open once again.]

Another local restaurant has shut down for the time being, and this one is a casual upscale dining spot along the Boston waterfront.

According to a tweet from @ConciergeBoston, State Street Provisions near where the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the edge of Long Wharf meet has closed its doors for now, with a sign out front saying that "it is with sadness that we have made the difficult decision to go into hibernation for the rest of the winter." The dining spot, which first opened in 2015 in the old City Landing space, is known in part for its New American fare and its raw bar.

Update: Oak + Rowan in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood Reopens After Closing for the Winter

[Ed note: This article was updated on March 29 to reflect the fact that the restaurant is open once again.]

An upscale Fort Point restaurant has reopened after shutting down for much of the winter.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Oak + Rowan on A Street closed down December 31, with a note saying that "It's a decision that we make with heavy hearts, but it is the right decision for our employees, our guests and our business to reemerge as strongly as possible in March 2021. We wish you a peaceful and delicious holiday and we send a thousand thank you's for being part of our extended family!" The temporarily closure of the restaurant comes on the heels of owner Nancy Batista-Caswell permanently closing one of her other dining spots--Ceia in Newburyport--last month, with Brine (another Newburyport spot that she runs) remaining in operation.

Oak + Rowan is one of countless restaurants to make the decision to close for part or all of the winter as the pandemic continues, leading to state and local restrictions on dining spots along with a sharp decrease in foot traffic in Boston and elsewhere.

[March 29 update: The Facebook page for Oak + Rowan indicates that it opened back up this month and is now open for dinner for dine-in, takeout, and delivery.]

1928 Beacon Hill Is Opening in the Former Lala Rokh Space

A bit less than a year ago, it was reported that a new restaurant might be coming to a space in a residential part of Beacon Hill, and now we have learned that these plans appear to have fallen through, as new plans for a dining spot are now in the works there.

According to an article from Universal Hub, antiques dealer Kristin Jenkins is looking to open an as-of-yet unnamed "neighborhood American bistro" in the old Lala Rokh space on Mount Vernon Street, while her life partner (and local restaurateur) Aaron Sells will be helping out as well. The post mentions that the proposed eatery will have "the ambiance of a private club" and that the menu will include steak, seafood, and pasta dishes as well as beer and classic cocktails.

Last March, it looked like an Italian and Mediterranean restaurant called Il Maestro might open in the Lala Rokh space, though that never came to be. (Lala Rokh, which featured Persian fare, closed down in 2018.)

[August 3 update: A tweet from @BOSFoodTours indicates that a sign is now up for the upcoming restaurant and that it will be called 1928 Beacon Hill, while a check at the site itself over the weekend confirms this as well.]

[December 16 update: The website for the place indicates that 1928 Beacon Hill is now open and its menu includes such items as deviled eggs, warm olives, tuna tartare, oven roasted chicken, arctic char, cacio e pepe, braised short ribs, and a variety of beers, wines, and cocktails.]

Cloud & Spirits Is Opening in the Former Cuchi Cuchi Space in Cambridge

A brand new dining spot is coming to Cambridge, opening in the space where a quirky restaurant and lounge had been until closing last year.

Eater Boston is reporting that Cloud & Spirits is planning to open on Main Street between Kendall and Central squares in the former Cuchi Cuchi space, with the website for the upcoming restaurant indicating that it will focus on New American fare with Korean influences. Eater and the website mention that Katie Cheung (Kamakura, Hojoko, Menton, Oishii, Radius) and Michael Gander (The Healthy Tap) are the co-owners, with Cheung being the Executive Chef and Gander being the lead mixologist, and that the menu will include such items as steak tartare, American wagyu ribeye, spicy roe pasta, honey sesame chicken, scorched rice soup, and house churned ice cream. Currently, Cheung is running a pop-up ghost kitchen called Mikkusu out of the Cloud & Spirits kitchen, with that spot featuring Japanese sandwiches.

Bar Rustic in Kingston Has Closed

Late last year, it was reported that a popular Italian and Mediterranean restaurant on the South Shore was shutting down, though its other dining spot would remain in operation. Now we have learned that that restaurant has closed as well.

According to a couple of sources, Bar Rustic in Kingston is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the place saying the following:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Bar Rustic. The ongoing pandemic and its restrictions have made continuing operations no longer possible. We would like to thank our incredible team that has adapted to every new challenge this restaurant has faced, and we are grateful to our wonderful and loyal guests. Thanks as well to Pyramid Management Group and the Kingston and Plymouth communities. Be well, the Cafarelli Family.

Bar Rustic was known in part for its seasonal New American fare using locally-sourced ingredients, while also offering cooking classes as well. The people behind the dining spot also ran Rustic Kitchen in Hingham, which closed last December.

Sky Restaurant in Norwood Has Closed

A casual upscale suburban restaurant that had been serving New American fare for nearly 20 years has shut down.

According to several sources, Sky Restaurant in Norwood is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this, saying that "Given the challenging economic climate due to COVID-19 and the resulting uncertainty of future business, I have decided that the proper course of action is to not reopen." The note does mention that "3," a restaurant in Franklin that is affiliated with Sky, remains open and has a very similar menu, and Sky gift cards and rewards cards are both valid there.

Sky first opened in Norwood in 2002, with a first location of Sky opening in Sudbury in 1997 and remaining in operation until 2010.

110 Grill Is Opening in Maynard

A rapidly-growing local restaurant chain is getting ready to open yet another location, with this one being in the western suburbs of Boston.

According to a press release, 110 Grill is planning to open in Maynard on August 17, moving into a space at Maynard Crossing, a new mixed-use development just south of the Route 117/27 intersection. The new outlet will actually be joining a new location of Evviva Trattoria at Maynard Crossing, with Evviva Trattoria being a small group of Italian restaurants under the same ownership. Currently, approximately 30 locations of 110 Grill can be found in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York.

110 Grill is a casual upscale chain that focuses on a mix of classic American and New American fare, including such options as wings, burgers, macaroni and cheese, meatloaf, fish and chips, steak tips, grilled swordfish, and more.

Parsnip in Cambridge's Harvard Square Has Closed

An upscale American restaurant in one of the busiest parts of Cambridge has shut down permanently, though the people behind it could eventually be opening another dining spot in the space.

According to a post from The Boston Globe, Parsnip in Harvard Square has closed for good, with a spokesperson for the Winthrop Street spot indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic played a part in the decision, saying that "Given the way people have changed their habits of living due to the global health crisis, they didn't think they could reopen and have a viable business at this point in time." The spokesperson does hint that a new concept could open there at some point, stating that "They'll have other ideas once this is over for that beautiful space."

Parsnip first opened in 2015, initially offering New American fare with European influences, with the food offerings having Filipino influences of late.

Central Kitchen in Cambridge's Central Square Is Closing; Brick & Mortar to Remain Open

A popular restaurant and bar in Cambridge is shutting down for good, though the cocktail lounge upstairs that is under the same ownership will remain in operation.

A message received from us today indicates that Central Kitchen on Mass. Ave. in Central Square is in the process of closing, with the space currently being used mostly for pop-ups and private events. We have been told that the space housing Central Kitchen is planning to be licensed as a recreational marijuana facility, while Brick & Mortar, a speakeasy-style bar above the restaurant, is not affected by this change and will remain open.

Central Kitchen first opened approximately 20 years ago, with the dining and drinking spot offering New American fare along with a variety of beer, wine, and cocktail options.

Whaling in Oklahoma in Boston's South End Is Closed

A South End restaurant with an unusual name--and a place that has one of the region's best-known chefs behind it--appears to be shuttered, and it is not known if/when it might open again.

According to a source, Whaling in Oklahoma was locked up and dark late Sunday afternoon during normal business hours, while another source had told us last week that the Tremont Street dining spot was apparently closing, though no other details had been given at the time. A check within its reservations section all week long showed that it stopped taking reservations after Saturday night and as of Sunday afternoon and again this morning, it was indeed no longer taking any reservations at all. Phone calls placed late on Sunday went directly to voicemail, and its website and Facebook page give no indication as to what might be going on.

Tim Maslow of the now-closed Strip-T's in Watertown and Ribelle in Brookline first opened Whaling in Oklahoma in the summer of 2018, with the place being a modern American brasserie with Japanese influences. A wine bar called Le Canular opened in an adjacent space last fall, residing in the former Sister Sorel space. (Whaling in Oklahoma took over the former Tremont 647 space.)

[January 31 update: Boston Magazine confirms that Whaling in Oklahoma and Le Canular are both closed for good, with business partner Brian Lesser indicating that they are now looking into "various options" for the space.]

Red Bird in Waltham Is Up for Sale; Currently Closed for Renovations

An upscale dining spot on "restaurant row" is on the market, and it also appears to be closed, at least for now.

According to a message sent from Peter Sward of The Daily Lunch, Red Bird in Waltham is for sale, as it looks like the owner of the Moody Street restaurant may be looking to relocate to a larger space. A call placed to the dining spot goes to a voicemail message saying that it is closed for renovations "for the month," while its website also says that it is shuttered for renovations.

Red Bird opened in the summer of 2014, taking over the space where Tuscan Grill had once been; the restaurant has been known for its seasonal New American fare along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

The address for Red Bird is 361 Moody Street, Waltham, MA, 02453.

[September 16 update: The Tables section of The Boston Globe states that Red Bird on Moody Street is closed for good, but they are indeed looking for a larger space in which to reopen.]

La Familia Is Replacing The Foundry in Easton

A pair of Italian restaurant south of Boston will be opening a new location just a bit closer to the city, and it will be replacing a dining spot known in part for its modern American fare.

Wicked Local is reporting that the people behind La Familia in Taunton and Cumberland, RI, plan to open a third location of the restaurant in the space in Easton currently occupied by The Foundry An American Table and Bar. The article mentions that the transfer of licenses has been approved by the town and that the sale could be finalized in the next three to six weeks.

The Foundry first opened in 2014, taking over the space where Loco Tapas had once been; the owner of The Foundry also runs Maguire's Bar and Grill, an Irish pub that is located a short distance east of the restaurant.

Lexx Restaurant in Lexington Is Closing

An award-winning suburban restaurant is closing its doors after being in business for 15 years.

According to an article from Wicked Local/The Lexington Minuteman, Lexx Restaurant in Lexington Center is shutting down for good on June 29, with owner Chris Bateman indicating that he is ready to move on, saying that "I've been doing this for 26 years... It's a younger man's game to be honest. Not that I'm not young, but the restaurant business is a grind." The Mass. Ave. dining spot, which first opened in 2004, has been known in part for its New American fare along with its wines and craft cocktails, with its website saying that it has been awarded "Best of Lexington" in "numerous" categories while The Boston Globe once gave is a glowing review, saying that "It's what you want in a neighborhood place."

The address for Lexx is 1666 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA, 02420.
