Clover to Cease Operations

A local restaurant chain that features vegetarian fare is saying farewell.

According to an email, Clover is shutting down, with Thursday, May 28 being its final day of restaurant service and meal box delivery. The note in the email says the following:

So what's happened? We've always prized transparency along Clover's journey. Our current situation isn't a unique story. In the best of times, restaurants are a tough business: margins are thin, building new restaurants is expensive, and our industry is the most exposed to macroeconomic forces. For years we've been navigating the hangover effects of COVID and inflation at every part of our supply chain, but we are proud to have remained committed to sourcing high-quality ingredients from local farms. Today, everyone is getting hit with rising costs—food prices are up, delivery prices are up, and a hundred other costs are moving in the same direction....We're deeply saddened to share this news—for our employees, New England farmers, and you, our guests and supporters.

Clover first started out in 2008 with a food truck at MIT and has since grown to include a number of brick-and-mortar locations; a couple of months ago, it was learned that the business was in danger of going under if a buyer could not be found by May 29.

Buitoni Spaghetti Bar to Open in Boston's Kenmore Square

A brand new Italian restaurant with an old name is going to be coming to Boston.

According to an article from Boston Magazine, Buitoni Spaghetti Bar is planning to open in Kenmore Square, moving into the space on Commonwealth Avenue where Blue Ribbon Brasserie had been, and before that, Eastern Standard (which now resides within a nearby space at the Fenway Center development). The article states that Tuscan Brands (Tuscan Kitchen, Sorella) is behind the upcoming dining spot, which gets its name from a pasta restaurant in Manhattan's Times Square in the 1940s and 1950s, and that the new restaurant will get its inspiration from that long-gone place, being a retro spot that Max Faro (who is senior project manager of hospitality and development for Tuscan Brands) says will have a "time-gone-by Italian immigrant vibe....It's going to have one-pound meatballs, fresh spaghetti being made right in front of you all night long." If all goes as planned, Buitoni Spaghetti Bar will open in 2027.

The address for the upcoming Buitoni Spaghetti Bar in Kenmore Square is 528 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

Tree House Brewing Opens Outdoor Beer Garden at Faneuil Hall in Boston; Indoor Space Apparently to Come at Some Point

Last month it was reported that one of the best-known breweries in New England was looking to open a location in downtown Boston, and now we have learned that part of it is up and running.

According to a Bluesky post from @heyratty.bsky.social, Tree House Brewing Company now has its outdoor beer garden open at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, indicating in the thread that the inside space is still being built out while there is a bar and a "huge" patio outside and that they allow for outside food to be brought in and cans to go are also available. The Tree House website confirms this, showing the new location on the site, and its Facebook page shows a reel from Friday saying "see you *today* and all summer."

In April, it was mentioned here that Tree House had filed a proposal to open in the former Mija Cantina & Tequila Bar/Cheers Replica Bar at Faneuil Hall, with the plans being to operate a brewery and distillery that would also include an outdoor beer garden. The company currently has locations in Charlton, Sandwich, Deerfield, Tewksbury, and a beer garden at the Pru, along with a farm in Woodstock, CT, and a taproom in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The website for Tree House Brewing Company is at https://treehousebrew.com/

Carbone's in Hopkinton Is Closing

A longtime Italian restaurant in the western suburbs of Boston that appeared to be closing around the start of the pandemic only to remain open is now closing for real.

According to a source, Carbone's Restaurant in Hopkinton is shutting down, with a MassLive article mentioning that the Cedar Street dining spot is planning to close on June 27, as co-owners (and siblings) Mary Ann Lorentzen and Peter Carbone are looking to retire. The restaurant, which has been around for 93 years, looked like it was going to shutter in the fall of 2020, as the owners were seeking to sell the business with the hope being that a new owner would continue to run the restaurant, though the decision would have ultimately been made by the person who purchased the place; Carbone's never did get sold and remained open for business through the pandemic and beyond.

Amelia's Taqueria in Allston Has Closed

A location of a local group of Mexican restaurants that reopened last year after being shuttered for well over two years due to a fire has closed permanently.

According to a post from @DarylDonatelli, Amelia's Taqueria in Allston is no longer in business, with a note out front at the Brighton Avenue storefront indicating that it shut down earlier this month while saying that "We appreciate your support for the past 14 years." The location has indeed been removed from the website, though it does appear that locations by Berklee College, Boston College, and at Assembly Row in Somerville remain in operation.

The Allston location of Amelia's was one of several businesses hit by a multi-alarm blaze in September of 2022, with the fire destroying the interior of the restaurant.

The address for the now-closed Amelia's Taqueria in Allston was 180 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134. The website for all locations can be found at https://www.ameliastaqueria.com/
