A group of restaurants that focus on locally-sourced foods will be opening another Boston-area location, and this one has been in the works for awhile.

According to a press release, DIG (which was once known as Dig Inn) is planning to open in Cambridge's Kendall Square this week, joining other outlets locally in Boston's Back Bay, Downtown Crossing, and Fort Point. The new location--which was first announced back in the early part of 2020--will offer healthy dishes with a menu that focuses on vegetables but also includes meats, while the space will include an open kitchen, indoor dining with 40 seats, a community table with 12 seats, a bar counter that has 8 stools, along with sidewalk seating during the warmer months.

DIG first started out in New York City in 2011 as Dig Inn and is known in part for bowls that have a grain or salad base with items such as chicken, beef, and salmon added.

The address for the new location of DIG in Kendall Square is One Broadway, Cambridge, MA, 02142. The website for all locations is at https://www.diginn.com/

World of Beer at CambridgeSide in East Cambridge Has Closed

The only Boston-area location of a Florida-based chain of beer bars has shut down.

According to a source, World of Beer at CambridgeSide in East Cambridge is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

Dear friends, We have made the very difficult decision to close this location due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic. We want to thank our regulars, loyalty members, and our team members who made World of Beer Cambridge so special. Cheers to you, Cambridge, for letting us be a part of this community since 2016.

Back in 2013, World of Beer had been looking at a space in Somerville's Davis Square, though those plans apparently fell through; currently, the only other location in New England can be found in West Hartford, CT.

Silk-Global Cuisine Is Opening in the Former Volturno Pizza Space in Framingham

A couple of years ago, it was reported that a location of a wood-fired pizzeria was for lease, and now we have learned that a new Indian restaurant is moving into the space.

According to an article from the Framingham Source, Silk-Global Cuisine is planning to open in Framingham, taking over the former Volturno space on Edgell Road. The post mentions that Agape Restaurant Group, which runs Kumar's in Northbrough, is behind the proposed eatery.

The Framingham location of Volturno closed at the start of the pandemic in March of 2020, and a few months later, a "Space Available" sign went up out front; the Worcester location of Volturno remains in operation.

The address for Silk-Global Cuisine is 1 Edgell Road, Framingham, MA, 01701.

The Beacon Hill Pub in Boston May Become the Charles Street Pub

A dive bar in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood that changed ownership a couple of years ago may be getting a name change--and a management change as well.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, the parent company of the Beacon Hill Pub on Charles Street is petitioning to transfer the licensed business to a new owner/operator, with the proposed name of the new place being the Charles Street Pub. The notice lists the manager as Chaz Fisher, while the parent company (149 Charles Pub LLC) includes both Fisher and Kyra Deligiannides as directors/officers, according to the OpenCorporates site. Little else is known about the transfer, including any changes to the space or concept, so stay tuned for updates next week when the meeting is held.

The Beacon Hill Pub closed down in 2018 only to have the Greater Boston Bar Co. take it over and reopen the bar, which remains in operation.

The address for the Beacon Hill Pub (and the proposed Charles Street Pub) is 149 Charles Street, Boston, MA, 02114.

Expanded Outdoor Dining to Resume in Boston (Except The North End) Starting April 1

It looks like there will be another season of expanded outdoor dining in the city of Boston, though one neighborhood isn't included just yet.

According to an article in Universal Hub, the Mayor's office has given approval for restaurants to set up temporary outdoor dining areas on public sidewalks and in parking lanes starting April 1, with dining spots needing to re-apply for temporary outdoor permits for the 2022 season. The post mentions that North End restaurants have not been given the green light as of yet because of "the density of the restaurants in the neighborhood," though dining spots in the North End can still apply for expanded outdoor dining while waiting for a decision to be made.

Universal Hub also says that there are new rules in place this year, including temporary patios being required to close by 9:30 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 PM Friday and Saturday, along with new requirements concerning barrier safety, insurance requirements, and evacuation plans.

More information on the 2022 temporary outdoor dining program can be found here.

[March 18 update: The Boston Herald states that expanded outdoor dining will start in the North End May 1, though restaurants will have to pay $7,500 to opt in, with that money being used for such neighborhood services as street cleaning and sidewalk cleaning. In addition, the temporary patios will end in the neighborhood on September 30, though the end date will be September 5 for "bad actors" who have received warnings or had suspensions for breaking the rules, and closing time will be a half hour earlier than the rest of the city which will also be able to keep their expanded patios open through December. (The article also says that the section of Hanover Street between Cross Street and Richmond Street will become one way during the expanded patio season.)]

[March 29 update: Universal Hub posts that Mayor Wu has made changes to the fees for expanded outdoor dining in the North End, including allowing monthly payments of $1,500 instead of a lump sum of $7,500, and there will also be hardship reductions for smaller dining spots, restaurants that aren't on Hanover Street or Salem Street, and eateries that don't have liquor licenses. (UH also tweets that Wu "Reiterates North End is different than other neighborhoods: More patios, more densely populated, have to balance needs of restaurants and residents."]

According to a tweet from Mayor Michelle Wu, the vaccination proof mandate for dining and drinking spots in the city has been rescinded, with Wu saying that "As of today, our public health data show that Boston is officially below the 3 critical thresholds for heightened COVID protections, so we are lifting the proof of vaccination requirement." Universal Hub mentions this as well, posting the following quote: "Today's public health data shows Boston has a 4.0% community positivity rate; 90.7% occupancy rate of adult ICU beds, and 7-day average of adult COVID-19 hospitalizations at 195.9 per day, falling below all three previously announced thresholds." (UH does also say that masks will still need to be worn in public indoor spaces, though that will be reviewed next week as well.)

Team Behind CK Pearl in Essex Is Opening Decklyn's in Gloucester

[Ed note: This article was updated on March 13 to reflect confirmation of its exact location.]

A new restaurant is on its way to the North Shore, and it has an ownership connection to a popular waterside dining spot.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Decklyn's is planning to open soon, with the listing saying that it will be a "sister restaurant" to CK Pearl in Essex. The post mentions that the upcoming place will focus at least in part on New England fare while also having influences from Southern California along with "island cuisine." The job post gives the town as Ipswich, though a source tells us that it will actually be opening in the former Captain Carlo's space in Gloucester (as soon as we get confirmation, we will post an update here).

No opening date has been given as of yet, but the post does say that they are gearing up for their first summer season.

CK Pearl is a casual upscale restaurant that offers such items as clam chowder, mussels, lobster carbonara, short ribs, fish tacos, ramen, ribs, and lobster rolls.

[March 17 update: A new Craigslist job post says that Decklyn's will indeed be opening in the former Captain Carlo's space at 27 Harbor Loop in Gloucester, which indicates the restaurant will likely have an extensive outdoor dining area.]

Spyce's Restaurants Are Saying Farewell

It looks like a local pair of dining spots known in part for their robotic kitchens are going away, as their focus will turn to developing the technology for a growing chain of restaurants that purchased them last year.

According to a source, Spyce in Cambridge's Harvard Square is closing its doors on February 18, with a check on the website indicating that the original location in Boston's Downtown Crossing has already shuttered. Based on a picture sent by our source, a note out front at the Harvard Square location says that "we are closing this location to focus on developing technology for Sweetgreen." As reported here, Sweetgreen announced last August that it would be purchasing Spyce, allowing the chain to use Spyce's technology to increase the efficiency of customer orders, though more specific details were not given at the time.

The Spyce concept was created by MIT students in 2015, with the Downtown Crossing restaurant opening in the spring of 2018 and the Harvard Square outlet opening in early 2021.

The website for Sweetgreen is at https://www.sweetgreen.com/ while the website for Spyce is at https://www.spyce.com/

According to an article in The Beacon-Villager and Wicked Local, the Bull Spit Taproom is planning to open in Maynard, moving into the space at Mill & Main (formerly Clock Tower Place) that had been home to the Battle Road Brew House. The post states that the upcoming place is affiliated with Bull Spit Brewing Company at Kalon Farm in Lancaster, with owner Keith Copley and operations manager James Hunt offering beer that will initially be brought in from the Lancaster brewery until they get a brewing license for the space. Wine from Copley's wineries in Ashburnham and Westminster will also be available, as will some cocktails, and the food menu is expected to focus on pub-style fare including sandwiches and finger food. If all goes as planned, the Bull Spit Taproom could be opening sometime this month.

Reunion BBQ Plans to Open in the Former Masa Space in Boston's South End

A new barbecue restaurant may be on its way to Boston, taking over the space where one of the city's best-known dining spots had been until closing down around the start of the pandemic.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Reunion BBQ is planning to open in the South End, moving into the former Masa space on Tremont Street. The notice mentions that the proposed restaurant is seeking a full liquor license and that the manager listed is Jessica Jimenez-Rivera, though very little additional information has been given on the dining spot (and nothing can be found on it online).

Masa closed down in March of 2020 after being in business for a bit more than 20 years; the restaurant was known for its tapas along with its weekend brunch, cocktails, and tequila options.

The address for the proposed Reunion BBQ is 439 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

The Dubliner Is Opening in the Former Kinsale Space in Downtown Boston

Last fall, it was reported that a popular Irish pub in the heart of Boston had shut down permanently. Now we have learned that a new Irish restaurant and bar will be taking over the space.

According to a source, The Dubliner is opening in the space at Two Center Plaza that had been home to The Kinsale, with the website for the place showing a logo that indicates it plans to be "Boston's premium Irish bar" while featuring live music and sports (its Facebook page says it will be an "Authentic Irish Pub & Restaurant featuring Boston's best in hospitality, food, drinks, live music & sport"). No other information has been given on its website or its LinkedIn page, including who might be behind it or when it could open, so stay tuned for updates.

The Kinsale announced its closure in October after there had been hope that it could open back up; a note posted by Classic Restaurant Concepts, LLC--which also shut down The Asgard in Cambridge's Central Square at the same time--said that "In September 2020 an attempt was made to reopen, but with office buildings largely empty it proved unfeasible and the pubs ceased operations after four weeks. While the intention was always to reopen, the timeframe proved to be too daunting. Weeks turned to months, and the months dragged on. Both establishments were lucky enough to have cooperative landlords, but in the end even that, and PPP assistance, were not enough." (The Kinsale first opened its doors in 1998.)

The address for The Dubliner is 2 Center Plaza, Boston, MA, 02108. Its website is at https://www.thedublinerboston.com/ while its Facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com/thedublinerboston/

[February 25 update: According to a press release, Irish chef Aidan Mc Gee--who has worked at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants in England--and the East Coast Tavern Group (Emmet's, Roxanne's, Scholars, Carrie Nation, Sunset Cantina) are behind The Dubliner, which will offer such items as slow-cooked beef cheeks, fish and chips, shepherd's pie, curried mussels, Maine crabs on soda bread, and a Sunday roast.]
