Tessie's Bar & Kitchen Is Now Open in Waltham; Replaces The Mad Raven

Last year it was reported that an Irish pub in the western suburbs that closed at the start of the coronavirus outbreak was getting a new but familiar name. Now we have learned that the changeover has officially taken place.

According to a message sent to us, Tessie's Bar & Kitchen has opened in Waltham, replacing The Mad Raven which was under the same ownership. A Facebook post gives a bit more information on the changeover, saying the following:

When we closed our doors on March 16th, 2020, we naively thought it would be a short pause. (Heck, we only closed on Christmas for the last 20 years!) Little did we know the havoc that would wreak through all our lives – and most especially the restaurant industry. Through the better part of last year, news grew darker, lockdowns ensued - and the thought of re-opening this bar seemed to drift further away amidst all the uncertainty....The pandemic taught us resilience. When you are knocked down, you get back up. So here we are. We are back up, and Waltham, we are OPEN!

As hinted at in an earlier article, this is a second location of Tessie's Bar & Kitchen, as the original can be found in Walpole (initially, it looked like the new spot in Waltham might be called Tessie's West). In addition to the two Tessie's locations, the people behind them also run The Raven's Nest in Walpole as well.

The address for the new location of Tessie's Bar & Kitchen in Waltham (and the former Mad Raven) is 841 Main Street, Waltham, MA, 02451. The website for both locations of Tessie's is at https://tessiesbar.com/

Telegraph Hill Kitchen and Bar in South Boston Is Returning

It looks like a South Boston dining and drinking spot that shut down during the pandemic is reopening under new ownership.

According to a licensing hearing board page within the City of Boston website, a license transfer appears to be in the works for Telegraph Hill Kitchen and Bar on Dorchester Street near Andrew Square, with the new manager being Stephen Whalen; this could indicate that the new incarnation of the place could have at least an indirect connection to investment group Greater Boston Bar Co., which is behind such spots as the Beacon Hill Pub and The Tam.

Telegraph Hill Kitchen and Bar, which first opened in 2010, closed its doors during the early months of the coronavirus outbreak last year, with the space appearing to be boarded up around late June or early July.

The address for the Telegraph Hill space is 289 Dorchester Street, Boston, MA, 02127. Their website can be found at: http://www.telegraphhillboston.com/

[May 25, 2022 update: According to a press release, Telegraph Hill opens back up on May 26 under new ownership, with executive chef Jaime Suarez (Common Ground; Grafton Street; Fireplace), heading up the kitchen.]

The Kinsale and The Asgard Have Closed Permanently

A few months ago, it appeared that two of the most popular Irish pubs in the Boston area might open back up this fall after being closed due to the pandemic. Now we have learned that this won't be happening.

According to a press release, The Kinsale in downtown Boston and The Asgard in Cambridge's Central Square will not be reopening, as they have both shut down for good. The release explains the decision, saying the following:

With the pandemic ongoing, office buildings at low occupancy, chronic labor shortages, challenging governmental directives and an uncertain economy, the decision has been made to permanently close popular Irish pubs The Kinsale and The Asgard. Both establishments were shuttered in March 2020 as part of the COVID-19 lockdown. In September 2020 an attempt was made to reopen, but with office buildings largely empty it proved unfeasible and the pubs ceased operations after four weeks. While the intention was always to reopen, the timeframe proved to be too daunting. Weeks turned to months, and the months dragged on. Both establishments were lucky enough to have cooperative landlords, but in the end even that, and PPP assistance, were not enough. “A huge part of our customer base is office workers. They went home last March, and they haven’t come back -- at least to the extent that it’s feasible to run a business,” said Peter Sarmanian, President of Classic Restaurant Concepts, LLC.

The Kinsale first opened in 1998 while The Asgard debuted in 2001, with both pubs being designed in Ireland.

A Somerville restaurant that features a Thai version of a chicken and rice dish is expanding to the heart of Boston.

Taco Bell Cantina Plans to Open in South Boston

A chain of Mexican fast-food joints that brought its new concept to the local area last fall may be opening a second one in a particularly hot section of Boston.

According to a licensing hearing page within the city's website, Taco Bell Cantina is planning to open in South Boston, moving into a space on W Broadway just west of Dorchester Street. If approved, the new location of the concept would join another on Commonwealth Avenue by the Boston/Brookline border, but while that one is a full-service restaurant with alcohol, this one may be slightly different, as it does not appear to be seeking a liquor license and does not mention anything about sit-down service, which could indicate that this may be an "urban-inline" version of the cantina  (as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here).

The address for the proposed location of Taco Bell Cantina in South Boston is 449 W Broadway, South Boston, MA, 02127. More information on the concept can be found at https://www.tacobell.com/news/fast-social-restaurants

Blue Bottle Coffee Is Reopening Its Harvard Square Location

A Cambridge location of a San Francisco-based coffee roaster that appeared to shut down permanently last spring is opening back up.

Excited to welcome you back on October 31, 2021!" The Harvard Square location of the chain was removed from the company website around late May or early June of 2020, with its windows being papered over (the Crimson says that it officially closed on May 30); a check on its website now shows that the Cambridge outlet is back up and it says "temporarily closed."

Other locations of Blue Bottle Coffee can be found locally in Boston's Back Bay (2), Cambridge's Kendall Square, and Chestnut Hill.

Tanjore Is Reopening in the Former People's Republik Space in Cambridge

It looks like an Indian restaurant that said farewell to Cambridge last fall is returning to an iconic space not too far away.

According to a source, Tanjore--which had been located on Eliot Street in Harvard Square--is looking to open back up in the former People's Republik space on Mass. Ave. on the western edge of Central Square. A Cambridge Day article hints that the situation is a bit complex, as the People's Republik license may be going to the upcoming New Republik Bar which is taking over the former Rising space in Inman Square, though a "pocket license" at that Cambridge Street space was preventing the transfer from happening but was surrendered last week which could allow the transfer to now take place, which in turn could allow Tanjore to move into the People's Republik space.

Tanjore left its Harvard Square space in October of 2020, apparently joining/being merged into Halal Indian Cuisine on Huntington Avenue in Boston.

The address for the new location of Tanjore is 878 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139.

[May 10, 2022 update: A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page has confirmed that Tanjore will indeed be opening in the former People's Republik space, as a sign is now up for the restaurant.]

[July 28, 2022 update: A new Cambridge Day article states that Tanjore is now open in the old People's Republik space.]

Teddy's on the Hill to Replace The Red Hat in Boston's Beacon Hill

A few months ago, it was reported that a Boston bar that had been around for more than 100 years had closed and was coming under new ownership. Now we have learned what the name of the new spot will be.

According to a tweet from @DunnTimothyP, Teddy's on the Hill is taking over the former Red Hat space in the city's Beacon Hill neighborhood, with a message sent to us confirming this. As hinted at earlier, owner Jake Nicholson is planning to "breathe new life" into the Bowdoin Street space, while holding onto the nostalgia of the old bar as well. An opening date has not been given as of yet for Teddy's on the Hill, but it looks like it could be opening soon, based on what we hear.

The address for the upcoming Teddy's on the Hill (and the old Red Hat) is 9 Bowdoin Street, Boston, MA, 02114.
