Strega Italiano in Woburn Has Closed

A location of a group of Italian restaurants has shut down.

According to a source, Strega Italiano in Woburn has closed for good, with Boston 25 News reporting on the closure this morning and a note on the website of the restaurant saying the following:

We've made the difficult decision to close our doors permanently prior to the New Year, giving our valued team members this time to enjoy the holiday season. We are grateful for their service, and we are working to place each employee in new roles throughout the PPX Hospitality Brands company, with the many opportunities in this great market. Our sincerest appreciation and gratitude go out to you our guests for the support and loyalty you have shown over the years, especially our regulars who have become like family. We welcome all to enjoy the Strega Italiano experience in our Boston locations, Seaport and Back Bay where we continue to invest in the brand and our authentic Italian dining experience!  We hope you’ll stay tuned for new features and developments at these fine restaurants!

The Woburn location of Strega first opened as Strega Prime in 2013, with The Varano Group being behind all the Strega outlets until selling the Woburn, Seaport District, and Back Bay locations to Danu Partners (of which PPX Hospitality Brands is a part) in 2020; The Varano Group continues to run the original Strega in Boston's North End along with Nico and Rina's, both of which are in the North End as well.

The address for the now-closed location of Strega Italiano in Woburn was 100 Sylvan Road, Woburn, MA, 01801.

A Great Big "Thank You" to Tres Gatos in Jamaica Plain

As many of you know, this has been an exceedingly difficult year for my family, as my father (Leslie Hurwitz) has been in a respite room at an assisted living facility since the fall of 2021 with health struggles, and to add insult to injury, he lost his hearing several months ago which is particularly cruel for someone who has been a concert pianist, musicologist, educator, and composer. Seeing him struggle has been too much to bear at times, and we have also had to deal with substantial bills because of his need to be in the respite room and his requirement for daily help, so a fundraiser was set up to help with the costs.

The response to the fundraiser has been incredible, with nearly 500 people helping out since April when it first went up, and a number of restaurant owners, managers, and workers have gone out of their way to help out via donations. One restaurant in Jamaica Plain recently went above and beyond with their own fundraiser specifically for Leslie, which is something that my family will never forget. A big tip of the hat to David, Phil, and the Tres Gatos team for having such big hearts in a time of crisis for us, and thank you to everyone who has helped out. - Marc H

Update: Cathedral Station in Boston's South End Is Not Closing After All, As the Proposed Dispensary May Open Next Door

Earlier today, it was reported that a neighborhood sports bar that is popular with the local LGBT community might be shutting down but now it appears that this is not the case after all.

A post by Michael Ratty within the South End Community Board Facebook group page indicated that he found out Cathedral Station on Washington Street may be replaced by a dispensary, with Leslie Seaton (who is the President of the East Berkeley Neighborhood Association) saying in the thread that the dining and drinking spot was indeed planning to close, and she posted a Zoom link to a January 3 EBNA meeting on the dispensary proposal. (Ratty also tweeted about the closure as well.) There has since been conflicting information on social media about this, including the possibility that there was confusion as to the address and that the dispensary may be going in next door instead. As soon as we get more clarification on this, we will post another update.

Cathedral Station first opened in 2014, taking over the space that had been home to the Red Fez, a Middle Eastern restaurant that had been open since 1940 (it reopened in 2002 after being closed for a number of years).

The address for Cathedral Station is 1222 Washington Street, Boston, MA, 02118. Its website can be found at http://www.cathedralstation.com/

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Cacao in Jamaica Plain is shutting its doors, with a Facebook post from the Centre Street shop saying the following:

We grew up in JP and went to JP schools so opening a business in JP was a dream come true. JP supported us from day one, made our frozen hot cocoa a summer treat to have and our hot chocolate was named one of Boston's best! Thank you JP for making us your "go to" shop for the holiday season and selling us out year after year!!

New Owners Taking Over Maria's Restaurant in Braintree; Will Have New Name, Similar Menu

A longtime South Shore restaurant that featured Italian and Greek fare has come under new ownership.

According to an article in the Patriot Ledger, Maria's Restaurant in Braintree--which has been closed since July--will get a new name and some changes to the space (including a lounge in the front) while the menu will apparently be similar to that of Maria's. The post mentions that new owners Gac Lusha and Edmond Cela hope to get the dining spot open in early 2023 and that they will honor Maria's gift cards.

Maria's first opened in 1950, going through an ownership change in 1979; the restaurant was known for such dishes as fried calamari, meatballs, lasagna, chicken parmigiana, baked ziti, stuffed shells, veal saltimbocca, steak marsala, and pizza.

The address for the restaurant replacing Maria's is 240 Quincy Avenue, Braintree, MA, 02184.

[March 27, 2023 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that the new spot replacing Maria's Restaurant opens today, and it is called Maria's Trattoria.]

Abington Depot Restaurant in North Abington Is Closing

A restaurant south of Boston that is located in an historic building is shutting down.

A growing group of Middle Eastern restaurants whose roots are in New York City is planning to expand to not one, but two more spaces in the Greater Boston area, with one being right in the heart of the city.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Shah's Halal Food is planning to open a takeout-only location on Cambridge Street, moving into a space near Bowdoin Street on the edge of Beacon Hill. According to a tweet from @JeremyKrantz, Neko's Of New York is planning to open in Stoughton, moving into a space on Sharon Street in Cobbs Corner near where Stoughton, Canton, and Sharon meet. I've decided to equip the new store with brick deck ovens. 4 of them to be exact. Our menu has changed tremendously. That's including NY Hand Tossed (round), Roman (half and full tray stretch), Sicilian (half and full sheet), calzones (4 size options), Strombolis (4 size options), Grandma Square and gluten-free options. After opening and finding our groove, I am committed and will launch, Neko's of Detroit, a category of pizzas prepared and baked using a completely different method. Buttery crispy thick crust, Wisconsin Brick Cheese and a finger licking sauce to layer on top.

No opening date has been given as of yet for the relaunched Neko's, so keep checking back for updates.

Jazz Urbane Cafe Still Planning to Open in Roxbury

A few years ago, it was reported that a cafe featuring live music could be coming to an historic building in Roxbury. Now we have learned that the plans are still on the table and appear to be moving forward.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Jazz Urbane Cafe continues to look at opening within the Ferdinand storefront section of the Bolling Building in Nubian Square. The people behind the proposed spot--Nia Grace of Darryl's Corner Kitchen & Bar, Berkeley Professor Bill Banfield, and entrepreneur Turahn Dorsey--will need to get approval for a variance by the Zoning Board of Appeal due to a lack of parking, as well as licenses to serve food and drink. If they get the green light to open, the new spot would feature live jazz music from both local and national performers (including acts from Banfield's Jazz Urbane record label) while the space may also be used for community events.

As mentioned earlier, the Bolling Building dates back to the 1880s.

Bertucci's Files for Bankruptcy Once Again

A local chain of Italian restaurants that declared bankruptcy a few years back has done so again.

According to an article from the Restaurant Business website, Bertucci's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, citing both the pandemic and inflation as reasons for the filing. With the 2018 bankruptcy came a change in ownership along with the closing of some of its locations, but it is not known whether there will be another ownership change this time around, nor is it known if any outlets will be shuttering due to the filing (locations in Brockton, Canton, and Marlborough have been removed from their website though it isn't known if these closed before the bankruptcy filing).

The Bertucci's chain, which is headquartered in Northborough, first started out in Somerville in 1981. Its website can be found at https://www.bertuccis.com/

The Fieldston Restaurant in Marshfield Has Closed

A cozy South Shore restaurant that resided in a former boathouse has shut down.

According to a Facebook post from owner Jan Perrin, The Fieldston Restaurant has closed its doors, as Perrin has decided to retire after running the Ocean Street spot for nearly 30 years. In the note, Perrin says that "It has been a GREAT RIDE. We've crossed the finish. The Fieldston is retired. Thank you Friends and Patrons for riding the rollercoaster with us!" While earlier posts from her indicate that the restaurant has been up for sale, it isn't known what might become of the space at this point in time.

The Fieldston featured classic American fare, seafood, and regional items while also being known in part for its fireplaces and rustic atmosphere.

The address for The Fieldston was 882 Ocean Street (Route 139), Marshfield, MA, 02050.

Eleni's Opens in North Woburn

Earlier this year, it was reported that the people behind a Greek and Mediterranean dining spot in the northern suburbs would be opening another restaurant a few miles to the north, and now we have learned that it has debuted.

According to an email from The Daily Lunch, Eleni's is now open in North Woburn, taking over the former Shallots space on Main Street. Unlike the original Eleni's in Winchester which is geared more toward takeout, the new outlet has a dining area with plenty of seating and it has a full liquor license, while its menu includes such items as hummus, saganaki, spinach pie, stuffed grape leaves, grilled Greek sausage, a village salad, lentil soup, moussaka, pastitcio, lamb shank, stuffed eggplant, gyros, shish kebab, lamb chops, mussels, and baked cod.

The address for Eleni's in North Woburn is 918 Main Street, Woburn, MA, 01801. Its website can be found at http://elenisrestaurantwoburn.com/

Eastern Standard Is Returning; Will Open at the Fenway Center Development

It looks like one of Boston's best-known restaurants is being reborn.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Eastern Standard is planning to reopen, moving from its old location within the Hotel Commonwealth in Kenmore Square to the upcoming Fenway Center development, a life sciences complex that will sit over the Mass. Pike and will help connect Kenmore Square, Audubon Circle, and the Longwood medical area. The post says the following:

This space may not look like much right now, but come next year, it'll be full - of a new team, of plates of steak frites and bread pudding and burgers and the plat of the day, of guests new and old, of laughter and tears, of whiskey smashes, of cheers when the Sox hit a homer, and of stories. You shared some of those stories with us during these past few years, and we're honored and humbled to hear what a huge part of your lives Eastern Standard became over 15 years.

In early 2021, it was announced that Eastern Standard would not be reopening in its Kenmore Square space, with its space and both the Island Creek Oyster Bar and Hawthorne spaces being taken over by the NYC-based Blue Ribbon Restaurant Group, which has since opened Blue Ribbon Sushi in the former Hawthorne space and Pescador in the former Island Creek Oyster Bar space. Early this year, however, restaurateur Garrett Harker (who was behind all three spots) announced that he was planning to open four "food and beverage concepts" at Bower, a luxury destination on Beacon Street between Kenmore Square and Audubon Circle, though no specifics were given at the time.

If all goes as planned, it looks like Eastern Standard will be reborn in 2023.

Mission Boathouse Is Opening on the Beverly Waterfront

Four years ago, it was reported that a local restaurateur had submitted a proposal for a new dining spot to open at a long-vacant waterfront space on the North Shore, and now we have learned that the restaurant is finally getting close to opening.

According to a source, Mission Boathouse is planning to open soon on the Beverly waterfront, and as mentioned in an earlier article, Marty Bloom (Mission on the Bay Restaurant in Swampscott, Mission Oak Grill in Newburyport) is behind the Water Street restaurant. A Salem News article mentions that the three-story dining spot will have an outdoor deck with firepits on the first floor, along with garage-door windows on the third floor that can open during the warmer months, while all three floors will have views of the ocean--and the menu will have international influences including South American, Asian, French, and Cuban.

Plans were first announced for the restaurant in 2018, though another proposal for the space that went all the way back to 2012 was for a location of the Black Cow, though that fell through along with plans for an outlet of Flatbread Company to open there as well.

The website for Mission Boathouse can be found at https://missionboathouse.com/

[February 23, 2023 update: According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Mission Boathouse is now open.]
