According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Model Cafe on N Beacon Street is now offering bar pizza, with a Facebook post from the place indicating that they started serving bar pies this past Friday. Hopsters Appears to Be Headed Toward Liquidation

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a local brewery with two locations in the Boston area had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Now we have learned that it is now apparently heading toward Chapter 7 liquidation.

According to an article from Brewbound, a judge has rejected a bid by Hopsters to prevent a trustee from changing the bankruptcy filing to a liquidation in a Thursday hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Massachusetts. Back in September, Hopsters founder/owner Lee Cooper filed for bankruptcy and was looking to reorganize at that time, reinventing the business in order to keep it going. A check on its website indicates that the site appears to have been taken down, and there is no indication as to the status of the company on social media sites. (More on the apparent liquidation of Hopsters can be found in this tweet from @EdB_SP.)

Hopsters first opened in Newton Corner in 2013, with a second location opening in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood in 2018.

Two Saints Tavern and Dos Diablos in Boston Have Gone into Winter Hibernation

Two more local dining and drinking spots have decided to close for the season, joining a number of others that have also gone into hibernation as the pandemic continues.

A message sent from Two Saints Tavern indicates that both Two Saints and Dos Diablos--which are in the same space and under the same ownership--have decided to hibernate for the winter, with a GoFundMe page for the former saying the following (the fundraising page has been set up to help out the workers there who have been laid off):

"Unfortunately due to Covid-19 and the restrictions put forth by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,  Two Saints Tavern has been forced to temporarily close its doors. As you may know, we tried to bring some normalcy back to to 52 Gainsborough St., and the Northeastern University community, but at the end of the day we just couldn't survive in these difficult times."

Two Saints Tavern and Dos Diablos opened in the former Our House East space in the spring of 2018, with the former being called at the time an "urban, rustic tavern" while the latter was called a "gritty, gótico-chic, taco bar."

A new breakfast and lunch spot with southern influences has come to Brockton, and the person behind it used to run a restaurant with a similar name nearby.

Hodges says that Lady C&J Cafe offers a variety of soul food options, including such items as biscuits with sausage gravy, macaroni and cheese, BLTs, egg and cheese sandwiches, Jamaican-style beef patties, empanadas, and fish- and chicken-stuffed pastries.

Moroccan Hospitality Restaurant in Somerville Has Closed

A family-owned restaurant in Somerville that featured North African cuisine has shut down, and COVID is to blame.

According to an article in Wicked Local, Moroccan Hospitality Restaurant on Somerville Avenue is no longer in business, with sisters Amina and Nouzha Ghallay initially starting off the year strong with their dining spot, but as Nouzha says, "In March, we had all these reservations, but as soon as COVID hit us, people started canceling them. After March, the business was going down, down, down – sinking little by little – and we never recovered from that." The restaurant started out in Malden in 2011, moving to Somerville three years later, with the menu including such dishes as lentil fritters, lamb tajine, chicken kebabs, and veggie couscous.

Dispensary Given Approval to Replace Mary Ann's in Brighton's Cleveland Circle

A couple of years ago, it was reported that a dive bar that was popular with college students could end up being replaced by a dispensary. Now we have learned that these plans have taken a big step forward.

A message from Henry Santoro of WGBH indicates that a marijuana shop has been given approval to open in the Mary Ann's space in the Cleveland Circle section of Brighton, with a Boston Globe article saying that the Boston Cannabis Board has indeed voted to allow Happy Valley to open in the Beacon Street space. The Globe mentions that there has been criticism from nearby Boston College about the plan, with former Boston police commissioner Bill Evans--who is currently head of the security and police operations at BC--voicing concerns about the proposed shop at a public hearing last week, saying that it would "open the door to another drug that will impact these kids" and stating that "I'd take Mary Ann's over [the dispenary] any day."

Mary Ann's, which has been locked up and dark for awhile, is one of a few drinking spots that was taken over by the Greater Boston Bar Co. back in 2018, including The Tam in Boston's Theatre District and the Beacon Hill Pub, the latter of which is reportedly being replaced by a high-end restaurant.

The address for Mary Ann's (and the proposed dispensary) is 1937 Beacon Street, Brighton, MA, 02135.

Temporary Outdoor Dining on Public Sidewalks and Parking Lanes in Boston Slated to End December 1

A couple of months ago, it was reported that expanded outdoor dining areas in Boston would be allowed to continue until at least through December 1 as the pandemic continued. Now we have learned that this does appear to be the end date, at least for temporary patios in public spaces.

According to two sources, including Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting, restaurants in the city that have set up temporary outdoor dining areas on public sidewalks and parking lanes will only be able to continue to do so until the end of business hours on December 1, as starting December 2, only outdoor areas on private property will be allowed to remain in operation. In addition, it is possible that poor weather conditions between now and the beginning of December could result in an early end to the temporary outdoor dining program, so at this point, December 1 appears to be a best-case scenario. (We have also been told that detailed information on temporary outdoor dining in 2021 will be coming from the city at some point.)

A number of restaurants in Boston have been allowed to operate temporary outdoor dining areas on public property over the past several months as a way to help businesses out during the coronavirus crisis.

Windy City Pizza in Dorchester Is Expanding to Weymouth

A Dorchester pizzeria that moved to a new location last year is getting ready to open another outlet in the southern suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Windy City Pizza is opening a shop in Weymouth, which jibes with an earlier article here from last year that looked into the Dorchester location moving from Gallivan Boulevard to Morrissey Boulevard. In that article, it looked like the new shop would be opening on Main Street in Weymouth, though we are still trying to find out its exact location.

The move of the Dorchester location of Windy City Pizzeria stemmed at least in part from "a small electrical incident" that took place at its former home in July of 2019; it opened in its new location approximately four months later. (Another location can be found on Newport Avenue in North Quincy.)

The address for Windy City Pizzeria is at https://www.windypizza.com/

[November 27 update: According to two sources (including our original source for this), Windy City Pizzeria will be moving into the old D'Angelo space at 1049 Main Street in South Weymouth.]

[January 20, 2021 update: The Windy City website indicates that the Weymouth location is now open.]

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, the Patriot Tavern in Walpole is for lease, with another Facebook post showing this while a listing within the Bisquest site seems to confirm this as well. The listing mentions that seller of the Route 1A property wants a quick sale and that it is in "turn key condition," while also saying "just bring your concept."

The structure in which the Patriot Tavern was housed dates back approximately a century, with the former Patriot Tavern being a dive bar until a few years ago when it was reborn under new ownership as a dining and drinking spot with such items as steak tips, wings, burgers, fish and chips, macaroni and cheese, and brick chicken.

The address for the Patriot Tavern space is 100 Main Street (Route 1A), Walpole, MA, 02081.

The Wenham Tea House Plans to Reopen Under New Ownership

Several months ago, it was reported that a North Shore institution that had been around for more than 100 years had closed down, but now we have learned that it will be reborn under new ownership.

According to a Twitter post from @swixvonflaubert, the Wenham Tea House is planning to reopen, with an article in the Salem News saying that Brenden Crocker and Milissa Oraibi of the Black Arrow in Manchester-by-the-Sea are behind the plans. The article mentions that the husband-and-wife team have some visions for the Monument Street spot, with Oraibi looking to offer locally-made items that aren't sold elsewhere in the retail space while she says of the restaurant part, "I want it to be an experience....I want people to feel special, like you've just walked into another country. I want to transport them." (She also wants the traditional touches to remain in place.) If all goes as planned, the Wenham Tea House--which will offer brunch and lunch along with prepared foods for takeout--will open sometime next spring.

The Wenham Tea House dates back to 1912, originally as "a women's exchange to provide an outlet for local homeworker goods and a cozy place for the townspeople to gather," according to its old website; more recently it had been known in part for its afternoon tea.

The address for the Wenham Tea House was 4 Monument Street, Wenham, MA, 01984.
